    Warning: WORD SWITCHING IS DANGEROUS in paraphrasing! Just don't do it!
    Here is an example of paraphrasing using word switching in a script from West Side Story.....
    "If any one of you, were lying, in the street, bleeding, I'd walk by - and spit on you!"
    (Original, Arthur Laurents)
    If any single one of you, were sleeping, in the street, bleeding, I'd promenade by - and spit on you!
    (paraphrase using word-switching)
    As you can see, switching a few words does not make the paraphrase not just bad. It makes it much worse because you are only changing very small parts of the original. So instead of a good paraphrase - this is a PLAGIARIZED PARAPHRASE! Your teachers and professors will not like it, and will penalize you accordingly and give you an F in the assignment - or even the whole course!!!
    So don't just change a few words in a paraphrase - try to change most of the stuff of the original in your paraphrases INTO YOUR OWN WORDS!!!

      How could that be a plaigarized paraphrase since the writer is describing it in his own words yet citing the original source.

    Iant there a limit where parapharasing wont even be enough? Bcz tons of researchers and scholars are publishing loads of research. What i meant to say is that how come every article is plaigarism free or have a bit of it? Isnt there a limit afterall?

      @universityofmarylandbaltim5690  5 лет назад +4

      Hello. If I am understanding correctly, you are wondering if at some point, writers will repeat certain expressions, just because so much is published? For example, many writers probably write sentences like "Recent research has shown ...". Using a phrase like that would not be considered plagiarism. In many style guides, like the one from the American Psychological Association (APA), plagiarism begins at 3 to 4 words per phrase, so there is some leeway built in. I hope that answers your question.

    Thank you for the video! But can anyone tell me this: why was there a citation after the first sentence as well as the last sentence in the very end of the video. Why is the citation put after the last sentence not enough?

    • @universityofmarylandbaltim5690
      @universityofmarylandbaltim5690  5 лет назад +2

      Well, it helps to indicate to your reader when you start using information from a source. If you only put it at the end of the last sentence, it looks as if only that sentence takes information from that source, instead of the sentence prior to that. Does that answer your question?

    • @jaymichaelcordero3784
      @jaymichaelcordero3784 3 года назад

      But even that is not enough. You should have added a signal phrase for the middle sentences, such as "it also mentioned", "the research further states," "it adds". Because without signal phrases the reader wont be able to know if the preceding sentence is your own idea or that you are still quoting. Therefore, a citation at the start and end are not enough. If you read your paraphrase, the listener should know where your paraphrase starts and where it ends even without seeing the written text.
