How to Paraphrase in Research Papers (APA, AMA)

- Researchers must often discuss other studies for a variety of reasons: to provide background information, review current scientific knowledge, bolster their own studies with evidence, and compare methods, results, or other sections with their own study, among other reasons. One great way to present previously published information without risking plagiarism is by paraphrasing.
“Paraphrasing” means expressing the meaning of someone else’s words in your own words instead of quoting directly. The necessity of this becomes clear when you consider how much information in one section (or even one sentence) of a research paper that may be irrelevant to your study. You can thus save space and keep your study more focused by choosing only the necessary parts for your paper; you can distill complex information into language that general readers can understand by re-writing a passage your own words.
This video includes:
✔ An explanation of what paraphrasing is and why you need to use it in your paper
✔ A detailed breakdown of how include original work using paraphrasing and quotes
✔ Samples of real research papers to demonstrate proper and effective methods of paraphrasing
✔ General tips on what to remember when paraphrasing in your paper

plllz guys tell me if it is ok to use paraphrasing with, of course, adding citations in the last page,???? I mean using only paraphrasing from other researchers?
Thank you Wordvice so much, for this informative video and all the useful links that you have shared. You just saved my life. I am an English learner and I needed this explanation desperately. I have a question if you can answer it would be highly appreciated. How many times am I allowed to paraphrase and quote on one page of my research paper?
Very happy to hear this, Areej! You can paraphrase as much of the work as you need, but keep in mind that the majority of the article or research paper will be based on the study or review YOU are conducting. Therefore, the paraphrased parts in a research paper are usually limited to the Introduction section, including the review of relevant literature.
Nice
great
i have a work and i want to do for it the paraphrasing who can help me pleas
This was really helpful thank you.
Thank you very much for this tutorial and for sharing such important information. I have a question about the paraphrased citation. Let's say I find the text you just paraphrased. It turns out that the paraphrase you did is very interesting for what I need and I decide to take that fragment as it was paraphrased. What I have not been able to understand when quoting is how to quote a paraphrased quote from a paraphrased fragment, or how I quote this paraphrased quote as it is paraphrased when the author is someone else. Do not know if I am clear with my particular doubt ?. Thank you very much in advance for your response or to whom you wish to respond. Thank you!
I believe you could say something such as Johnson quoting Smith states "X,Y, and Z" (cite Johnson's work). I know this is late, but I h ope it helps.
@@gamerguyraigh7473 Thank you very much. It is still useful.
Do I need permission from authors to paraphrase their work if I cite their work?

Hey there! I'd like to draw your attention to the fact that paraphrasing must comply with the same length of the original passage.
Took me (as a non native English user) for a while to understand.
Very useful than you

The unnecessary background "music" is horrendous for people on the autistic spectrum and while I'm not, I also found it impossible to concentrate on the words. I can now sing all the note patterns back to you and learned didly squat about paraphrasing!

Good question! While there isn't a perfect answer to this, one rule is to at least provide as much of your own commentary in the paper as you do paraphrasing and quoting. Moreover, there are a lot of ways to paraphrase, and sometimes you don't need to use the words or data of another researcher to make your overall point, even when you are using the basic (or even specific) conclusions of that researcher. In addition, you should always read through articles of the journal/conference/publication to which you are submitting to see what other researchers do. This can help determine how many sources to include in your literature review and how much reference to previous work should be quoted or paraphrased.
