The main points of this lecture :
    1.Change the synonyms.
    2. Move parts of the sentence.
    3. Change the parts of speech.
    4. Change affirmative to negative or vice versa.
    5. Combai sentences.
Tips : also you can change active to passive or singular to plural.
    * And the paraphrase will be in your own words. Not the others.
Thank you very much from Bangladesh 🇧🇩

All communication is about paraphrasing. We learn and we repeat what we learn as we express the concepts. If we can exercise our brains by using the process you teach in this video, we can all be better communicators and strengthen our mind power.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish

Hi Martin, you are correct that all communication we do with paraphrasing in someway or another. When we hear what someone says and repeat it back to someone else, we are paraphrasing.

Thank you for giving me a lesson for paraphrasing. I really thank you for your hard work. Below is my answer to your PRACTICE. I would really appreciate it if you could be kind enough to give me some comments.
    1. Today, most smokers live in poor nations, while they did in rich nations previously.
    2. Students' command of paraphrasing depends on their grammar and vocabulary.
    3. The first child likely leads more autonomous and prosperous life.
    4. Facing COVID-19, many obese people with diabetes and/or heart problems have had more troubles in U.S.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  2 года назад

I'm so glad that you found it helpful. Your answers are excellent!!! I would change a couple of small things in #3:
You wrote "The first child likely leads more autonomous and prosperous life." Add "a" to say "a more autonomous and prosperous life." It might be more clear also to say "The first child is more likely to lead...," like this:
The first child is more likely to lead a more autonomous and prosperous life.

Thank you for your input. Because this video is designed for English learners, I go through each one of the tools separately but conclude with reminders that using only one tool is not enough. In order to paraphrase, the sentence needs to be in one's own words, which can be achieved by using a combination of tools (and adding a citation, which I cover in this video ruclips.net/video/P_8x9Ot7E1Y/видео.html). I will take another look and change the description in the video to make it clear. Thanks again :)

😁 Hi everyone! Thanks for watching! Please note that this lesson is meant to be an introduction to paraphrasing for English learners. It is very important to 1) change both the words and the sentence structure and 2) cite the source. If it is too similar to the original, it may be considered plagiarism.

My correction: Many of the smokers used to be living in affluent countries in the past, but at present, most/a greater number of smokers reside in developing countries.
You wrote "fatness," but we always say "obesity."
You wrote 'victorious," but we only use that word for a war or battle. You should use "successful" instead.

Hi Aneesh, Good job! A couple of tips: in #3, the word "self living" is not used in English. You can use independent or self-reliant. Sometimes we keep the original word because there is not a good enough synonym. Also, the grammar in #4 is not clear because there seem to be 2 main verbs without clear punctuation (are suffering ... has been fell). Try this: Due to Covid 19 pandemic situation in the U.S., too many people are suffering health issues and have fallen in to greater difficulties.

Great! Tell me what difference can be found between summary and paraphrase.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  3 года назад

Good question! A summary is when you rewrite the main ideas in your own words. You focus on only the most important ideas of the original article. A paraphrase is a different skill because you can paraphrase anything --- any idea whether it's a main idea, a detail, just one sentence or a whole paragraph. You must use the skill of paraphrasing (writing in your own words) when you summarize.
I hope that makes sense! :)

I don't know a lot of books that teach paraphrasing, but this one has a section about paraphrasing, and it's quite complete: amzn.to/4d201Ne

Can you tell me what you need to paraphrase (is this for an essay?), and what part of it is hard for you to understand? Then I can try to give you some tips

      @@LearnAcademicEnglish Hello
Thank you for the video that you have posted in regards to paraphrasing. I have listened to your vidoe a few times.
I wanted to know the second method that you said that was 5 grammar toolkit do you need to follows all of the 5 stages to do a paraphrase or do you only need to do one of the steps for example combine sentences.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
      Thank you
      Farzan

It is a “toolkit” of grammar tips for changing the words, and you can use as many as you can want. It’s not necessary to use all of them. I use them depending on the sentence; some of them will fit your sentence and others will not be possible to use. I hope that helps!

Could you please go through harvard referencing and how to not repeat ideas over and over again when you are doing harvard referencing becuase you gave example of APA and MLA referencing.
I will be waiting for your kind response.
      Thank you
