The main points of this lecture : 1.Change the synonyms. 2. Move parts of the sentence. 3. Change the parts of speech. 4. Change affirmative to negative or vice versa. 5. Combai sentences. Tips : also you can change active to passive or singular to plural. * And the paraphrase will be in your own words. Not the others. Thank you very much from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
All communication is about paraphrasing. We learn and we repeat what we learn as we express the concepts. If we can exercise our brains by using the process you teach in this video, we can all be better communicators and strengthen our mind power.
Hi Martin, you are correct that all communication we do with paraphrasing in someway or another. When we hear what someone says and repeat it back to someone else, we are paraphrasing.
Today, I replayed this video because it’s really helpful. I play this video serveral times in order to improve my paraphrasing skill. I hope Professor will make more helpful videos for us to learn English better. Thank you!!
Thank you for giving me a lesson for paraphrasing. I really thank you for your hard work. Below is my answer to your PRACTICE. I would really appreciate it if you could be kind enough to give me some comments. 1. Today, most smokers live in poor nations, while they did in rich nations previously. 2. Students' command of paraphrasing depends on their grammar and vocabulary. 3. The first child likely leads more autonomous and prosperous life. 4. Facing COVID-19, many obese people with diabetes and/or heart problems have had more troubles in U.S.
I'm so glad that you found it helpful. Your answers are excellent!!! I would change a couple of small things in #3: You wrote "The first child likely leads more autonomous and prosperous life." Add "a" to say "a more autonomous and prosperous life." It might be more clear also to say "The first child is more likely to lead...," like this: The first child is more likely to lead a more autonomous and prosperous life.
@@LearnAcademicEnglish I am happy to receive your reply SO EARLY. Thank you for pointing to my poor use of the article. I would like to keep studying English watching your other videos.
1. In earlier days most of the smokers lived in wealthier countries but in the present days it's in developing countries. 2. Paraphrasing will be much easier if the students acquire good knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. 3. It is said that the successful and self living child in a family will be the first one, who is born to their families. 4. Due to Covid 19 panademic situation in US too many people are suffering health issues has been fell in to greater difficulties.
Hi Aneesh, Good job! A couple of tips: in #3, the word "self living" is not used in English. You can use independent or self-reliant. Sometimes we keep the original word because there is not a good enough synonym. Also, the grammar in #4 is not clear because there seem to be 2 main verbs without clear punctuation (are suffering ... has been fell). Try this: Due to Covid 19 pandemic situation in the U.S., too many people are suffering health issues and have fallen in to greater difficulties. Thanks for leaving a comment!
This video is very informative and interesting because I never knew how to paraphrase. Since I've watched this video it really gives me a brighter view on how to write on my discussion boards and Individual Projects. Thanks You Tube.
I tried to do the practice given by you .Please point my mistakes if there's any . 1.Many of the smokers used to be living in affluent countries in the past. But at present maximum smokers reside in developing countries. 2.More and more command over grammar and vocabulary will make paraphrasing easier. 3.First kids of families are more likely to become self supporting and victorious later. 4.Covid-19 worldwide outbreak has been more exigent due to a greater number of population afflicted by diabetes, heart disease and fatness.
Hi Satish, These are great! Here are a few suggestions: You wrote: Many of the smokers used to be living in affluent countries in the past. But at present maximum smokers reside in developing countries. My correction: Many of the smokers used to be living in affluent countries in the past, but at present, most/a greater number of smokers reside in developing countries. You wrote "fatness," but we always say "obesity." You wrote 'victorious," but we only use that word for a war or battle. You should use "successful" instead.
Also try the “tell a friend” method. Read the original, put it away, and retell it in your own words as if you were telling it to a friend. I hope that helps 😊

You are a wonderful presenter, as you are very pleasant and well-spoken. I'm going to use the first part of the video as a resource for my students, thank you. I am a little concerned that the content after the 6-minute mark ("Toolkit") is a little too close to plagiarism to teach my students.
Thank you for your input. Because this video is designed for English learners, I go through each one of the tools separately but conclude with reminders that using only one tool is not enough. In order to paraphrase, the sentence needs to be in one's own words, which can be achieved by using a combination of tools (and adding a citation, which I cover in this video ruclips.net/video/P_8x9Ot7E1Y/видео.html). 1. The majority of smokers lived in rich countries in the old days, however, today, most smokers live in developing countries. 2. These look great! The only small thing I'd change is the punctuation in the first one. Put a semi-colon to join the two clauses with "however" The majority of smokers lived in rich countries in the old days; however, today, most smokers live in developing countries.

Thank you for your comment. I agree that the paragraph about California is too similar to the original in its structure (in addition, I should have mentioned that a citation is needed to identify the source). It was a poor choice on my part, but I was just trying to get the basic concept across, that you have to focus on expressing the original meaning without focusing on changing the original word for word with synonyms.
