    Academic writing tips for writing concisely:
    -- use the best, most specific vocabulary to express your ideas exactly
    -- avoid unnecessary adverbs, unnecessary long phrases, and extra pronouns
    -- avoid redundant pairs of words
    -- bonus tip: shorten sentences by reducing adjective and adverb clauses, like this:
    While we were hiking near the coast, we saw seals on the beach. Change to "While hiking near the coast..." (reduced adverb clause)
    The Covid vaccines seem to help people who have been suffering from long-haul Covid symptoms. Change to "people suffering from..." (reduced adjective clause)

      Hi Natalie, thanks for your suggestion! I had not thought of doing a video about specific words to write efficiently because the most important point is to avoid extra words or to not repeat yourself with similar words. If I can think of the types of words that you were asking for, I will make that video. Thanks again!

      You can still cut more words:
      1. Professionalism is the key to success.
      2. Finding a job with good hours and pay is necessary.
      3. University students often need loans to pay tuition.
      For #3, "university" is a key word. Otherwise, you're not being clear: nursery school students? primary school students? high school students?

    I have a suggestion for a video topic. One can find hundreds of youtube videos on phrasal verbs but nobody explain if we can drop the particule, for exemple, can one say "hurry" instead of "hurry up", "send" instead of "send off", just "listean" instead of "listen up". I noticed that non-native English speakers, myself included, have problem on when and if it is necesary to include a particule up, off.. etc. to a verb. I have two quick questions if you don't mind. First one, are no longer and no more interchangeable. Second one, in the show "America's got talent" do the Judges say "it' a yes FOR me" or "it's a yes FROM me" and there is a third question I just remebered, does one say "say hello to Bill FOR me" or "say hello to Bill FOR me". Thank you in advance.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  3 года назад

      These are good questions and ones I hadn't really thought about before! There are some phrasal verbs that have particles that don't drastically change the meaning of the verb, and for those, yes, you can drop the particle. "Up" is the most common one I can think of (save money vs. save up money, etc.). I will try to explain this in more detail in another video.
      No longer and no more are not interchangeable. However, you can use these two: I no longer eat meat. I don't eat meat anymore. (You can't say "no more" in that sentence).
      Say hello to Bill FOR me. In this case, the person is doing something for you, meaning that he/she is doing it in your place, so we say "for me"
      The judges could say both, but they probably say "It's a yes for me" meaning that "my opinion is a yes." We sometimes say "it's a no for me" when we don't want to do something or disapprove of something.
      I hope that helps!

    • @zakariiraillen2559

    Hi Jenna, what's the term called when you use a single word that explains a long sentence ?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  2 года назад

      Hi Prince! I hate to say it, but I don't exactly know! The only thing I can think of is "summary" because a summary expresses a much larger amount of text in a shorter way. When we teach writing, we often use words like "key word" or "key point" to describe an idea in a short way.

  • @ngonzale3

    Are there writers who are concise but you enjoy reading? How do we avoid the risks of being concise but dulling our writing? Thank you for the video.

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  Год назад +2

      Good point! One important point is that different purposes require different styles of writing. Writing that is done for school should usually be concise (especially in English). Creative writing, on the other hand, is different.
      However, because I teach English to learners of English, this video is geared toward people who may overuse words that have no particular purpose. For example, I saw this in one of my students' essays today: "in our daily lives, we share cultures through contact and communication" but in this case, we probably don't need both "contact" and "communication." Here's another: "English helps me achieve my dreams and goals." Those words have basically the same meaning here, so only one should be used.

    Mam I have question to you. So can you tell me how to do it ? How to increase vocabulary teacher ?

    • @LearnAcademicEnglish
      @LearnAcademicEnglish  2 года назад

      Hello! Good question!!
      Here are my tips for how to increase vocabulary.
      First, make vocabulary learning active. Don't just look at the words; quiz yourself, try to say them in a sentence, and practice the words over and over until you remember them. You can use the Quizlet app (free version) or website to make vocabulary lists or use the lists that are already on there. Then you can use Quizlet to practice with flashcards, quizzes, etc.
      Second, it's easy to forget, so you must practice new words over and over. Try to make a vocabulary list every week, and put the list on your bathroom mirror so you see it every day.
      Third, try to learn vocabulary by topic. For example, learn lots of vocabulary about sports, health, food, religion, etc. Learning related words that are all about the same topic can help you to remember them.
      What do you think? I hope these tips help! :)
