Little anecdote : where I'm from (Quebec, Canada), our Health Minister gives daily conferences regarding Covid-19's evolution ; he happens to be Portuguese and mentioned that while staying at home we should be doing some comforting cooking and that he'll be doing Pastel de Nata! Since then, I kid you not, Portuguese tarts are HYPED here and everybody's doing them, chefs are coming up with their version, etc... and our local vegan chef, Jean-Philippe, made a vegan version 2 months ago haha! I think it's a cute story in these scary times :)

I'm Portuguese. So I was basically judging your pastel de nata making skills from the beginning. A lot of people here in Portugal try to veganize them and there are a lot of vegan recipes for them. Your's seems legit! Some people add a lemon rind at the same time you added the vanilla pod and then remove it, others don't (I think the pastel de belém, the famous one, does not have lemon in it). Have often thought of how to make v/pasteis de nata [incidently fyi: one pastel; many pasteis - plural] ... and you have definitely nailed it!! I love experimenting in my kitchen, and thought coconut milk or cream would work perfectly - thanks for confirming that👌🏼
Your introduction of cinnamon in the pastry is a wonderful bonus idea, and the sprinkling of icing sugar after baking is awesome ... tho traditionally it is a sprinkle of cinnamon ... and at some places, you get a sachet of cinnamon so it is optional 😋
Well done and thanx for sharing your recipes and knowledge ~> you truely are an inspiration ... sooooo enjoy your videos❣️

Yeeeeees Gaz! I did them for breakfast today and, let me tell you as the sweet tooth portuguese that I am, they're pretty similar to the originals in terms of flavour!
Thank you for turning my favorite sweet vegan - I reckon my life is now complete.

Not the same recipe... Pastel de Belém are made in a shop in Belém and they have their own secret recipe. Actually I prefer the regular pastel de nata, but many disagree with me 😅

I am from Macau and living in the US. Macau was a Portuguese colony until 1999 so this is a treat I had every time I went home. But in Macau, it is always a battle between traditional dim sum egg tart and the Portuguese egg tart

You can eat them with cinnamon on top of the custard, and can even eat them with a spoon if you will. Portuguese sweet recipes are kinda difficult to veganize since they use a lot, lot, lot and a looooooot of eggs. Glad you made these 💖 love from portugal! 🇵🇹

If you have just taught me how to make vegan Portuguese tarts that taste like the real thing, I will become your kitchen slave for life! I can’t wait to see if you have my other two favorites: custard egg pie (basically a great big Portuguese tart made in the US South) and coconut custard pie. Yummm. The chocolate desserts I love transition to vegan easily but I didn’t think it would be possible to make a vegan egg tart with no egg or diary. Seriously, you have just given me hope that I can survive becoming a vegan! 😊. Happy holidays!
