3 ways to use oats in handmade soap

In this soap making video, I share 3 ways to use oats in handmade soap; including oat milk, oat oil and colloidal oatmeal. I also show you how I use these ingredients to make a triple oat soap with the hot process method. Thank you for watching!

Triple oat soap recipe:

Oils:
25 g oat oil (5%)
175 g olive oil (35%)
150 g coconut oil (30%)
100 g shea butter (20%)
50 g cocoa butter (10%)
Frozen oat milk:
for the hot process version: 176 g
for the cold process version: 120-140 g
10 g citric acid + a splash of distilled water
Sodium hydroxide lye:
when adding citric acid: 76.5 g
without citric acid: 70.5 g
2 tsp colloidal oatmeal
10 ml fragrance or essential oil for a light scent (I used ‘honeywash’ by gracefruit)
Cure the soap for about 4 weeks before using on your skin.
○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

That makes me so happy🥰 I just keep them in a wooden box. When I was new to soap making I didn’t understand the importance of using distilled water, so I did experience some rancidity and orange spots, but never oily soaps

Cold process soaps go through a longer curing time than hot process soaps. Most people use the hot process soaps right after it us made.

How do you do that
I am finding oat milk soaps are becoming my favourites, I also use my homemade oat milk soap on my puppy, it’s extra soothing for his sensitive skin, and doesn’t have a problem now. Question: wouldn’t the heat detract from the wonderful properties in the soap. I shall try your recipe, thanks.

Hi, please tell me if you can use this soap as a shampoo? Doesn't oatmeal powder lose its properties when reacted with sodium hydroxide, maybe it's better to add it at the end (after the gel stage)?
I don't recommend it as shampoo. You can sure add the powder at the end, maybe it's better🙂
@@tellervo. By the way, i'm really interesting this question of when it's still better to add any organic additive in the hot process, such as clay, mush, decoctions etc., if add them in the end, will soap spoiled faster?, If You know, I will be grateful for the answer..

You can replace it with another oil high in linoleic acid, but please run the new recipe through a lye calculator😊
can we add whole rolled oats for exfoliant?

I wasn’t sure if it was going to work, I’m so happy it did😊 I didn’t stir, I think it’s so much easier this way to see when it’s done. The batter might separate like mine did, but it comes back beautifully when you mix it.

Yes, I added 6 grams more to keep the superfat at the same level🙂
How do you know what temperature to add the lye to the oils?
Personally, I like to soap between 30-40 degrees Celsius

They say add oat milk to the oils because if you use it frozen and add lye to it like you did it would turn out a sticky goo, I see yours didn't do that, did you use a store bought oat milk? Thank you 😊.
Yes I used store bought milk. Maybe it's best to use the milk in oil method though if others have experienced issues☺️
