  • This is a tutorial for how to be a latch hooker. In this video we take a look around my cosy corner where I do all my latch hooking, and I show you how to do the actual movement so that you can see how easy it is to get hooking!
    The set decorator, producer, director, Camera woman, editor and tea maker was my daughter Elizabeth Utley, and she thoroughly enjoyed bossing me around for a whole day.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial. Growing up my aunt did latch hook rugs and while she tried to teach me when I was a kid I took more to the embroidery supplies she had lying around that she no longer used. We would spend hours together watching movies and just crafting and it was some of the best times of my life. I spent as much time with her as I could growing up she was my best friend. She passed on a couple years ago and now that Im in my 20s I wanted to take up something to honor her memory and couldnt think of a better way than picking up her favorite craft. Thank you for all of your tutorials helping me to keep her memory alive 💕

      Hi Jean. What a lovely message and what fabulous memories. I too have crafted since I was 6 and I am now 55! I used to sit with my Nana and help her with her latch hooking. My mum taught me to sew and embroider and all these hobbies bring fabulous joy. Looking back I never would have guessed that I would have a thriving little latch hook business. Happy Hooking! Clare

    The Yorkshire tea recommendation 100% reassured me that you know exactly what you are talking about and that you have fantastic superior taste. Also thank you very much for making this tutorial. It is very clear and simple to understand. And has made me confident enough to attempt to make a moss themed hook rug ❤

    Hi Claire from Utterly hooked designs I wanted to add how much I truly enjoyed not only your skills,your incredible teachings, also sharing your unique & super cool work area. What I adored & you actually made me laugh out loud when you shared your choice of beverage & the importance of chair comfort bc no one wants to end up with a flat bum creating a super latchooking project can take sitting for very long periods of time.. So you covered just about everything, I am ecstatic & grateful to you , for your sharing in such great detail.

    I know I am super late to comment but thank you thank you thank you. Your camera placement, your speech, was outstanding & created a very simple , easy to follow tutorial. Which surprisingly many others choose to not create content so easy to follow or actually it's very difficult to honestly see what they are doing!! Which if you ask me defeits the entire reasoning of creating the content in the first place.
    Yours was awesome & I must say thank you from the very bottom of my heart!!!❣❣❣
    Many blessings to you.

    I am 79 years old and have been looking for instructions on the first step on hooking yarn. I tried several sites but it wasn't clear enough until I found your site on You Tube. I haven't hooked in years and forgot how to start. I was gifted a large plastic tub filled to the brim with brand new packets of color yarns and it is time to put them to good use. Also, I learned from you how to set the large canvas on a table with a heavy weight to get started. I am in my sewing room now anxious to get started but wanted first to thank you for your tutorial. I am also a quilter but I need a break from this past year of quilting while sheltered in place at home because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, I do embroidery and sew garments, etc. Greetings from Roanoke, Virginia USA.

    hi Katie i am currently doing my first latch hook and am loving it but just wasnt sure if once completed if the yarn needs to be trimmed to make it look even. thanks.

    • @UtterlyHookedDesigns
      @UtterlyHookedDesigns  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Alin. If you think it looks really uneven then I supposed you could trim your yarn. However if you step back and look at your work you probably find you don't even notice. I never trim my yarn as I think it is unnecessary but of course it does depend on how even you hold your ends when hooking. Hope this helps. Clare x

    Hi love your video. Only thing i was wondering and you didnt mention is how long are your pieces of yarn/whool when you buy them.? And is there any limites on how short or how long they would need to be ?

    • @UtterlyHookedDesigns
      @UtterlyHookedDesigns  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mimi. Thanks for your message. The rug yarn that I sell is approximately 6cm long. This is about the average length for Acrylic Rug Yarn. For Wool rug yarn it is usually about 7cm and sometime 8cm. It would be very difficult to latch hook with anything less than 6cm. The longer the yarn the more it wants to lie down rather than stand upright. Hope this helps. Clare x

    Instead of hemming the ends, I turned it down and inch all the way around and tact it..Even though I go through a thicker area with the hook and yarn.Will the rug yarn keep it from fraying. It's been years and just starting again. Also can I put some kind of backing on it also?

    • @UtterlyHookedDesigns
      @UtterlyHookedDesigns  7 лет назад

      Susan Crawford Hi Susan. Thank you for your message. If you are going through both layers of the canvas on the edge's then this will stop it from fraying. I like to stitch binding on also to give extra strength and protection. You can add a backing, it is up to you. I prefer not to as it can create a sandwich for dirt to collect. Hope this helps. Hi Linda. You are welcome. Sorry I don't know how Flokatis are made but it looks like they are women with long wool strands which are then combed to give the fluffy effect. Regards Clare
