- This is a tutorial for how to be a latch hooker. In this video we take a look around my cosy corner where I do all my latch hooking, and I show you how to do the actual movement so that you can see how easy it is to get hooking!
The set decorator, producer, director, Camera woman, editor and tea maker was my daughter Elizabeth Utley, and she thoroughly enjoyed bossing me around for a whole day.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. Growing up my aunt did latch hook rugs and while she tried to teach me when I was a kid I took more to the embroidery supplies she had lying around that she no longer used. We would spend hours together watching movies and just crafting and it was some of the best times of my life. I spent as much time with her as I could growing up she was my best friend. She passed on a couple years ago and now that Im in my 20s I wanted to take up something to honor her memory and couldnt think of a better way than picking up her favorite craft. Thank you for all of your tutorials helping me to keep her memory alive 💕
Hi Jean. What a lovely message and what fabulous memories. I too have crafted since I was 6 and I am now 55! I used to sit with my Nana and help her with her latch hooking. My mum taught me to sew and embroider and all these hobbies bring fabulous joy. Looking back I never would have guessed that I would have a thriving little latch hook business. Happy Hooking! Clare
The Yorkshire tea recommendation 100% reassured me that you know exactly what you are talking about and that you have fantastic superior taste. Also thank you very much for making this tutorial. It is very clear and simple to understand. And has made me confident enough to attempt to make a moss themed hook rug ❤
Hi Nazifah. Thank you so much for your lovely message. Have fun and Happy Hooking! Clare x
Thank you for the video. When my grandmother passed away I was given a box of crafts she had and latch hooking was one of them and thanks to your video I now know how to latch hook and can't wait to get started!

Hi Claire from Utterly hooked designs I wanted to add how much I truly enjoyed not only your skills, your incredible teachings, also sharing your unique & super cool work area. What I adored & you actually made me laugh out loud when you shared your choice of beverage & the importance of chair comfort bc no one wants to end up with a flat bum creating a super latchooking project can take sitting for very long periods of time.. So you covered just about everything, I am ecstatic & grateful to you , for your sharing in such great detail.
Oh another lovely comment! Thanks so much David. Latch Hooking is my passion and my business and I just want to spread the joy! Clare x

So Glad to be of help and happy hooking! Clare x
Thanks a bunch!
I know I am super late to comment but thank you thank you thank you. Your camera placement, your speech, was outstanding & created a very simple , easy to follow tutorial. Which surprisingly many others choose to not create content so easy to follow or actually it's very difficult to honestly see what they are doing!! Which if you ask me defeits the entire reasoning of creating the content in the first place.
Yours was awesome & I must say thank you from the very bottom of my heart!!!❣❣❣
Many blessings to you.
Hi David. You are never too late to make a comment, especially such a lovely one! This video I did may have been around a while but I feel it is still relevant and my business is still going strong, so that's a win win! Glad we made you laugh! Our daughter instructed and directed me! Our children love to tease me and often say 'Oh Hello'! Take good care of yourself. Warmest Regards Clare
I remember making a rug with my grandmother as a kid but couldn't remember how it worked! Thank you for sharing!!
Hi Amber. You welcome! Regards Clare
I am 79 years old and have been looking for instructions on the first step on hooking yarn. I tried several sites but it wasn't clear enough until I found your site on You Tube. I haven't hooked in years and forgot how to start. I was gifted a large plastic tub filled to the brim with brand new packets of color yarns and it is time to put them to good use. Also, I learned from you how to set the large canvas on a table with a heavy weight to get started. I am in my sewing room now anxious to get started but wanted first to thank you for your tutorial. I am also a quilter but I need a break from this past year of quilting while sheltered in place at home because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, I do embroidery and sew garments, etc. Greetings from Roanoke, Virginia USA.
Hi Jenny. Thank you so much for your lovely message. So glad to have inspired you to have a go at latch hooking. I also love quilting, sewing, embroidery, all sorts really! Not much time to do them now though as my little latch hooking business keeps me busy. Take care and keep safe. Clare x

Hi Alice. Thanks so much for your message. So glad I could help. Take care. Clare

I'd like very much to thank you as I've had a lovely vintage set for an awfully long time and I didn't use them I bought them at an auction and they were a vintage lot , I have finally sold them because your video . I could finally know what they were called and how they work . Now I'm gonna buy some and give them a go . Thank you very much . Truly thankful Maizie Jo 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Hi Maizie. So glad to have helped. Happy Hooking! Clare
I did latch hooked with my children starting when they were around the age of 5 yrs. I placed the piece over a pillow on their lap.
They each made a small rug for next to their beds. Adults would not believe me when I said the children made the rugs themselves.
Hi there. It is a great craft to learn from an early age. Fantastic memory, thank you! xx
My mom got me an intermediate to advanced and im a beginner this helps so much
P.s she got it because it was the only one left that the store had 😅
You are very welcome. Happy Hooking! Clare
I had a cup of tea when I was going this too. :)
Hi, Clare here from Utterly Hooked. Thanks for watching with a cup of tea! Happy Hooking. Clare x
Perfect way to demonstrate...shown the actual way one latching would view it. Everyone else's demonstration is with the camera facing them.

Just like to say I started a daunting Hook rug a few years back it is the back of the Dark Side of the Moon LP cover it huge ...Got the prism part with colors done but Holy Cow i never thought of how much black i had to do ...Just taken it back out and going to see it to the end and hang it with pride of a job worth doing .. But i really want to thank yo for this short vid because after having a away for a few years i had to refresh on how to do the Latch Hook now i can carry on thanks to you ...Hoping to have it done by March 1st for it will be Pink Floyds 50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon .. A very fitting way to celebrate for me ...
Hi there. This is great news! I bet it is going to look amazing. Working lots of black is really hard on the eyes, so I totally understand where you are coming from! A picture when it's finished would be wonderful. Wishing you happy hooking! Regards Clare
I did about 300 hooks last night I love how it starts to come to life and you see all the hard work pay off..I must finish it B4 March 1st the 50th anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon... I cut all my own yarn for it would cost me a small fortune to buy that much black Canvas Is 3ft wide by 2.5 feet tall its a big one

Thanks for not making us watch a 20 min video and love the part about tea and other beverages available. Lol
Hi Tara. Thanks for your lovely message. Glad you enjoyed my video. Regards Clare
I can only use my left hand. I've been told that latch hook takes two hands to do. However, after seeing this video, I'm gonna try it!! Thanx!!
Hi there. So glad you did see my video! Latch Hooking can be done just as well left handed as with your right. I bet you have developed alsorts of techniques to get you through your daily tasks with just your left hand. Good luck and please let me know how you get on. Clare x
Thank you. It's seems like you are working at the end of the table which let's you insert the hook easier. Thanks for the great tips!
+WarisitaBoricua You are very welcome! Clare x
Very helpful tutorial
Thank a lot lady
You’re gorgeous and easy 👍🏻🌹😘
Thank you! I hope you mean I'm gorgeous and latch hooking is easy!
Great easy tutorial
hi Katie i am currently doing my first latch hook and am loving it but just wasnt sure if once completed if the yarn needs to be trimmed to make it look even. thanks.
Hi Alin. If you think it looks really uneven then I supposed you could trim your yarn. However if you step back and look at your work you probably find you don't even notice. I never trim my yarn as I think it is unnecessary but of course it does depend on how even you hold your ends when hooking. Hope this helps. Clare x
Thanks for the tutorial!!!! I already have a sports rug latch hook kit. So I came to you tube to learn how to use it. I am only 11 but I already can crochet knit and do origami but anyway thanks for the tutorial!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Susan. Thanks for your message. You are never going to get bored with all these lovely hobbies. Clare x

Awww thanks Emiline! Clare x
I love the cup of tea comment lol I had a cup of tea while I was watching :)
Thanks for the tutorial
Hi Louise. You are very welcome. Regards Clare
Hi love your video. Only thing i was wondering and you didnt mention is how long are your pieces of yarn/whool when you buy them.? And is there any limites on how short or how long they would need to be ?
Hi Mimi. Thanks for your message. The rug yarn that I sell is approximately 6cm long. This is about the average length for Acrylic Rug Yarn. For Wool rug yarn it is usually about 7cm and sometime 8cm. It would be very difficult to latch hook with anything less than 6cm. The longer the yarn the more it wants to lie down rather than stand upright. Hope this helps. Clare x
thank u will have a go. used to do this but years ago with my nan, just for got how to do it.
Have fun Cayley.
love it
Subscribed and liked!
nice video, very easy to understand
Thanks so much.
hi Clare, I have a question . I always have trouble with these colors vanilla , tan, off white , cream dark gold, medium gold, light gold on kits that require these colors any suggestions on how i can tell them apart? your suggestions and ideas will be very much appreciated.
Scott
Instead of hemming the ends, I turned it down and inch all the way around and tact it..Even though I go through a thicker area with the hook and yarn. Will the rug yarn keep it from fraying. It's been years and just starting again. Also can I put some kind of backing on it also?
Susan Crawford Hi Susan. Thank you for your message. If you are going through both layers of the canvas on the edge's then this will stop it from fraying. I like to stitch binding on also to give extra strength and protection. You can add a backing, it is up to you. I prefer not to as it can create a sandwich for dirt to collect. Hope this helps. Clare xx
Many thanks 🙏🏼
Bless you
Thankyou so much! Ive always wondered! Do u happen to know how flokatis are made?
Hi Linda. You are welcome. Sorry I don't know how Flokatis are made but it looks like they are women with long wool strands which are then combed to give the fluffy effect. Regards Clare
