in all honesty, it wasnt bashing Kobe. It was a good refreshing story. If you look at it a certain way Kobe kinda pushed him to be better in the regard of speaking up to himself. Imagine if Kobe took on the role as being a player coach instead of his usual role. He is still a legend regardless. I am a Sacramento Kings fan, but also love the way Kobe approached the game

This is one of the best stories I've heard about playing with Kobe. Just really honest about Kobe's ego from a perspective of wanting to win games with a person he had to share the ball with. I also think a lot of players resented the attention Jeremy Lin got from Linsanity onward. But this is a great story of figuring out how to work with people and connect with people during the tough times
I felt bad for him for Linsanity because Melo was 100% in the wrong and even came off as racist to Asians during that’s; that’s why I don’t like Melo, he’d rather bitch and complain instead of competing for a chip in NY.

Big ups to Lin for standing up to Kobe... I don't think there was any Kobe taking things out on other players. It was more of Kobe testing Lin for firmness and the mutual respect that came from Lin standing up for himself. Kobe thought that Lin was too soft (this opinion came from watching them in practice). Part of the Kobe teammate experience was that mental 'irritation' he liked to do and how you responded to it. Playing in LA isn't easy for people with fragile egos *stares at Westbrook*... but I know that Kobe respected people he couldn't pushover--that is from his own confession
The fact that Lin stood up for himself against Kobe during that rough season made Kobe gain respect for Lin is awesome. Most players would be scared to stand up to Kobe but that’s how respect is earned, when you fight for your right and not run away like a scared punk.

JLin is a true warrior and just as he said, that season Kobe still had the "winning at all costs" mentality, that changed in his last season after he announced his retirement, then he became a mentor. JLin loves to ball and has an incredible IQ, but is a pretty humble human being.
Kobe is not perfect, and his mentality is not for everyone. But he is who he is and I'm glad Lin spoke up for himself and got Kobe's respect. I imagine if you have Kobe's respect, you're likely doing something right.
I disagree! Kobe (just like Jordan) is lucky that Phil Jackson was the coach he was, because Kobe lacked leadership skills. You are supposed to bring the best out of people, and as a leader you need to figure out a way to do that. Being an A-hole is not the inly way.

Kobe was mad at the wrong people that year. He should have been mad at Byron Scott. Scott clearly had no respect for Jeremy Lin and had no gameplan to win games. Kobe wasn't mad at Scott because they were both teammates. Kobe also wasn't healthy and Lin had to be the main guy because he was the only one who could create his own shot.
It reminded me of when Jordan came back to the Wizards. Both these guys are great players, like Jeremy Lin said, Jordan & Kobe were 35yo guys who think they're still in their 25yo bodies. Because of their greatness, their coaches and organizations are afraid to call them out for shooting their teams out of games.
Jeremy is an evolved guy who speaks from the heart. Not many people talk about this, but during his half-year with the Hawks, he spent a lot of time mentoring rookie Trae Young. You gotta think Jeremy would be a great coach.

Jeremy Lin is always articulate and respectful. It was a joy being a Knicks fan and witnessing his 8 game performance run. Unfortunately he got injured and never really got back to that level. Nonetheless, he worked and was resilient in spite of all of his roadblocks. Salute to J Lin 🫡

As a die-hard Kobe fan, let's just get this out of the way. Kobe does shoot his team out of games throughout his career, especially toward the latter part of his career. If you don't realize this, you are not a true Kobe fan. Fans live with him shooting the Lakers out sometimes. You cannot only take the good without the bad. The way Kobe always plays has such a small margin of error. Those tightly contested fade away over multiple defenders. Off balance three pointers. Going through traffic with contact layups. Facts I'm also a die-hard Kobe fan but I gatta agree with this take. I remembered that game against the Nuggets when he tried to get the game winner over 2-3 defenders and missed. The Lakers ended up losing that game in OT. All Kobe had to do was pass the ball and this happened in the 2014-15 season a year before he retired. I wish he would've change his game like Lebron a little and let his teammates scored and stopped being a 1 on1 player during his latter years. He's still my favorite player tho

This was a real interview. Everyone has their ups and downs and Kobe as expected is a passionate person especially about basketball, but in personal lives he has a big heart.
Can't comment on how he was in his personal life, but he was sure an asshole on the court. One of the most selfish players I ever watched, back when I watched the game. That's one of the biggest reasons why his teams only won 4 percent less games when he was off the court, as opposed to the 35-40 percent lesser winning percentage when Jordan and James were off the court (and that's despite the fact they certainly had a few selfish moments of their own).

Generally, on the court itself, he has probably been one of the least selfish elite talents ever, at least for a non-PG. As for Jordan, yes, he was arguably more selfish than James on the court. In his defense, though, he shot so insanely well that he rarely shot his team into a loss. Kobe tried to shoot like he was Jordan, but he didn't have 50-55 percent field goal percentages to go with it, nor did he back it up on the other end of the court nearly so well. James is smart enough to shoot just the right amount to keep his field goal percentage way up around 50. But yea, MJ simply was so refined a talent that his selfishness rarely hurt his team. For Bryant, who was not nearly so efficient, it's a different story.

But in the 21century we don't use those old methods to motivation, rather we use encouragement and knowledge support which( frankly )just as effective but without the demotivation and insecurity attached.

This is the part that kills me, when Kobe said he barely slept. I don't care who you are, but sleep is critical for recovery, mental sharpness, physical energy, etc. And on top of that, he was taking his kids to school and being a family man. That's cool and all, but the severe sleep deprivation didn't help him.

Sounds accurate. I remember how painful it was to watch that season. Scott the Tank Commander. I lost respect for Scott that year. I think the Kobe being 35 but think like he was 25 was spot on.
Isn't CP3 35 and playing like he's 25? Had Kobe at 31 not gotten the CP3 deal vetoed there would have never been a torn achilles. Because Kobe would not have been forced into playing the point guard position and carrying too large a load. It was unprecedented and a criminal act to veto an already done deal. And back that up with a NBA created media fake narrative "that nobody wants to play with Kobe" to try to prevent him from getting any help.

Kobe was being an ass that year. Kobe was bad recovering from injury and was no longer himself but he still wanted to be the man, taking 30 shots with a very poor percentage. I remember in countless game, he was still taking bad shots thinking he was in his prime, but he couldn't do it anymore. So he would shoot Lakers into falling behind, then J Lin would lead the 2nd unit and catch up, but then Kobe had to take over in the 4th quarter and lose. Kobe couldn't have another guy run the offense and still had to be the man shooting 30 shots a game, that was why they couldn't coexist. Kobe couldn't admit that he wasn't who he used to be coming back from injury at 35. That year was horrible for Lin because he wasted a healthy year with the Lakers that was still Kobe dominant and was tanking by the middle of the season. Scott was limiting Lin's minutes because Scott was dominated by Kobe and was tanking. Whenever Lin played well and was making the Lakers close to winning, Scott would take Lin out. So Lin was coming off the bench in weird patterns, making it hard for LIn to get a rhythm. Lin still played well but he was often taken out when the Lakers were actually playing well without Kobe.
I am a huge laker fan and cannot recall between 2013-2017 where our second unit brought us back in a game led by jeremy Lin and Jordan hill. May be wrong but I doubt it. Lin was apart of our team for a season and did fairly well, but should have been a second option at PG. the PG position is the most competitive position in the sport right now and dude could only muster 11ppg in 25min of playing time. Like I said Not bad, but definitely not starter material. And most definitely not someone you should defer to in pivotal moments in a game. Last point: our roster was poorly constructed. there was no possible way we were going to win any games unless we changed our management. We had guys like Robert Sacre and Timofy Mosgov on contract. No way we were winning games

Thanks Jeremy for giving us this story. Love here more and more about Kobe. I knew his attitude wasn't for everyone but no one ever wants to me speak down him cause of the respect for him.
That says a lot about Kobe's character and his ego. He didn't treat JLin as a teammate with respect, and when he was confronted he didn't want to talk to JLin for 4 months.
He wanted to win at all costs. He wasn't trying to be liked. But when the potential to win was over, he humbled himself and made amends with Lin. Kobe also evolved.
They have to earn it ,say whatever the fuck you want Kobe has 5 More Rings than any of those players . Micheal Jordan has 6 and ex Teammates are still crying about how he treated them 😭.
All of Kobe's greatest strengths - his intensity, his work-ethic, his demand for perfection, his self-confidence, his never-give-up attitude - were also his greatest weaknesses. It's a shame he didn't mellow out until after he retired, because I think had he balanced all those traits with the generous and mentoring attitude he had post-career, he would have been even greater.
@@Vinny.Xsee that's the point: J Lin is a much better person than Kobe ever was, but Kobe won multiple championships and other accolades while on the other hand J Lin is out of the league at this point. Kobe himself said he sacrificed many friendships for the sake of greatness. J Lin didn't prioritize winning over being a good person. Personally I would go the J Lin route, but I can't fault Kobe for the way he chose to go about things during his NBA career.

I mean yes, Kobe was egotistical and his self confidence was through the roof, but it was those qualities that made him successful like you said. He sacrificed one part of his life to win NBA championships. I mean majority of people will most likely take J Lin's/Tim Duncan type path but Kobe's way of approach also worked out. biggest problem with Jlin was that with his play style, he has to be the play maker on a team.. which Jlin is pretty good at... But rest of the league did not give him a lot of chances, because he would be competing with Harden Kobe and Camelo on the same team.... and the few chances he had in Knicks and in Brooklyn..he blew it with bad luck (injuries)... If Jlin was a specialist, or after going to Hornets if he had trained to be a specialist.. knocking down 3s and occassionally being a sixth man... then I think JLin would be still playing. Oh well, Im still a fan tho... Hope he gets to play a few more seasons :)
I'm a Nets fan so it sucked to see him go out with an injury during the first game of the season and only play 37 games in 2 seasons. I wish he got to prove himself in Brooklyn. As a matter of fact, I wish he got to keep doing his thing with the Knicks. When Carmelo came back, it was said that Carmelo didn't want Lin to have the ball as much bc it would lower Carmelo's scoring.

I love that he felt honest enough to give this story. The entity of "Kobe" is so romanticized these days that people forget that he was a flawed person like everyone else. Don't get me wrong, he is the "black mamba" and we can learn a lot about growth and becoming great via the way he approached the game, but we can also learn from his flaws and mistakes as well. I would argue the 2015/6 team had more talent but I just felt the Lakers were happy with just letting Kobe shoot 6/20 every night and being an attraction rather than actually developing the young guys they had. If Kobe didnt ruprure his achilles , he would have an extended prime just like Lebron, being a top 5 player well after his 30s.
Blame D’Antoni for that. Kobe basically ruined the last few years of his career by going all out to make the playoffs that year in 2012 since Howard and Nash were riddled with injuries and D’Antoni was overplaying Kobe to win games and make the playoffs which eventually led to the achilles injury, it’s a shame. That’s why Kobe gets disrespected so much these days because a lot of these kids only saw his bad years at the end. RIP Mamba

The reason why the Lakers got to put together a instant all star team was because Lebron James (the NBA's poster child) came to the Lakers and did what the league allowed him to do in Miami. You know when they allowed Lebron ( the 3rd best player in the league at the time) to join teams with D. Wade ( the 2nd best player in the league at the time) to beat Kobe (the best player in the league at the time). But they said it wasn't fair to small market teams to allow Kobe to get CP3.
What is sad is that, because Jeremy lin will speak up to kobe. It pretty much shows Jeremy definitely respected and valued himself, he probably spoke up for himself to other people. We all know the NBA management don't like when a player is like that, and look what ended up happening to lin's career.

I'm a Kobe fan, but I completely agree with Lin. There were so many games that the Lakers could've won if not for Kobe being a ball hog and forcing contested shots. And also he was the main reason my LA lost to Pistons in 2004 finals.

I am a Laker fan and Kobe is my favourite player. I remember this season and I do remember me getting frustrated because Kobe would shoot the team out of the game. Now 45 times in a game?? I don't think Kobe shot that much except for his final game so that might be a bit of a stretch. The thing is, he was just never the same since he came back, his shooting was not as good but having that confidence in himself he kept shooting thinking it would go in and too many times it just didn't.

This is one of the best stories I've heard about playing with Kobe. Just really honest about Kobe's ego from a perspective of wanting to win games with a person he had to share the ball with. I also think a lot of players resented the attention Jeremy Lin got from Linsanity onward. But this is a great story of figuring out how to work with people and connect with people during the tough times

Big ups to Lin for standing up to Kobe... I don't think there was any Kobe taking things out on other players. It was more of Kobe testing Lin for firmness and the mutual respect that came from Lin standing up for himself. Kobe thought that Lin was too soft (this opinion came from watching them in practice). Part of the Kobe teammate experience was that mental 'irritation' he liked to do and how you responded to it. Playing in LA isn't easy for people with fragile egos *stares at Westbrook*... but I know that Kobe respected people he couldn't pushover--that is from his own confession

Kobe was mad at the wrong people that year. He should have been mad at Byron Scott. Scott clearly had no respect for Jeremy Lin and had no gameplan to win games. Kobe wasn't mad at Scott because they were both teammates. Kobe also wasn't healthy and Lin had to be the main guy because he was the only one who could create his own shot.
It reminded me of when Jordan came back to the Wizards. Both these guys are great players, like Jeremy Lin said, Jordan & Kobe were 35yo guys who think they're still in their 25yo bodies. As a die-hard Kobe fan, let's just get this out of the way. Kobe does shoot his team out of games throughout his career, especially toward the latter part of his career. If you don't realize this, you are not a true Kobe fan. Fans live with him shooting the Lakers out sometimes. You cannot only take the good without the bad.
The way Kobe always plays has such a small margin of error. Those tightly contested fade away over multiple defenders. Off balance three pointers. Going through traffic with contact layups. His body just couldn't keep it up anymore at that point. Nothing wrong with it. We all get old. No one is immured to that.

Facts I'm also a die-hard Kobe fan but I gatta agree with this take. I remembered that game against the Nuggets when he tried to get the game winner over 2-3 defenders and missed. The Lakers ended up losing that game in OT. All Kobe had to do was pass the ball and this happened in the 2014-15 season a year before he retired. I wish he would've change his game like Lebron a little and let his teammates scored and stopped being a 1 on1 player during his latter years. He's still my favorite player tho

This was a real interview. Everyone has their ups and downs and Kobe as expected is a passionate person especially about basketball, but in personal lives he has a big heart.
Can't comment on how he was in his personal life, but he was sure an asshole on the court. One of the most selfish players I ever watched, back when I watched the game. That's one of the biggest reasons why his teams only won 4 percent less games when he was off the court, as opposed to the 35-40 percent lesser winning percentage when Jordan and James were off the court (and that's despite the fact they certainly had a few selfish moments of their own).

Kobe tried to shoot like he was Jordan, but he didn't have 50-55 percent field goal percentages to go with it, nor did he back it up on the other end of the court nearly so well. James is smart enough to shoot just the right amount to keep his field goal percentage way up around 50. But yea, MJ simply was so refined a talent that his selfishness rarely hurt his team. For Bryant, who was not nearly so efficient, it's a different story.
Nothing Lin said was bitch about Kobe. He just answered the questions of what happened. And in reality that's what Kobe was during that period. No one said he was a terrible person but its what he said to some people like JLin who was effected by him because of abusive treatment to JLin, but he never said that's how Kobe treated everyone else.

But in the 21century we don't use those old methods to motivation, rather we use encouragement and knowledge support which( frankly )just as effective but without the demotivation and insecurity attached.

This is the part that kills me, when Kobe said he barely slept. I don't care who you are, but sleep is critical for recovery, mental sharpness, physical energy, etc. And on top of that, he was taking his kids to school and being a family man. Isn't CP3 35 and playing like he's 25? Had Kobe at 31 not gotten the CP3 deal vetoed there would have never been a torn achilles. Because Kobe would not have been forced into playing the point guard position and carrying too large a load. It was unprecedented and a criminal act to veto an already done deal. And back that up with a NBA created media fake narrative "that nobody wants to play with Kobe" to try to prevent him from getting any help.

This is why Jeremy Lin is one of my favorite players. He seems like a good dude.
Kobe was being an ass that year. Kobe was bad recovering from injury and was no longer himself but he still wanted to be the man, taking 30 shots with a very poor percentage. I remember in countless game, he was still taking bad shots thinking he was in his prime, but he couldn't do it anymore. So he would shoot Lakers into falling behind, then J Lin would lead the 2nd unit and catch up, but then Kobe had to take over in the 4th quarter and lose. Kobe couldn't have another guy run the offense and still had to be the man shooting 30 shots a game, that was why they couldn't coexist. Kobe couldn't admit that he wasn't who he used to be coming back from injury at 35. That year was horrible for Lin because he wasted a healthy year with the Lakers that was still Kobe dominant and was tanking by the middle of the season. Scott was limiting Lin's minutes because Scott was dominated by Kobe and was tanking. Whenever Lin played well and was making the Lakers close to winning, Scott would take Lin out. So Lin was coming off the bench in weird patterns, making it hard for LIn to get a rhythm. Lin still played well but he was often taken out when the Lakers were actually playing well without Kobe.
I am a huge laker fan and cannot recall between 2013-2017 where our second unit brought us back in a game led by jeremy Lin and Jordan hill. May be wrong but I doubt it.
Lin was apart of our team for a season and did fairly well, but should have been a second option at PG. the PG position is the most competitive position in the sport right now and dude could only muster 11ppg in 25min of playing time. Like I said Not bad, but definitely not starter material. And most definitely not someone you should defer to in pivotal moments in a game.
Last point: our roster was poorly constructed. there was no possible way we were going to win any games unless we changed our management. We had guys like Robert Sacre and Timofy Mosgov on contract. No way we were winning games

biggest problem with Jlin was that with his play style, he has to be the play maker on a team.. which Jlin is pretty good at... But rest of the league did not give him a lot of chances, because he would be competing with Harden Kobe and Camelo on the same team.... and the few chances he had in Knicks and in Brooklyn..he blew it with bad luck (injuries)... If Jlin was a specialist, or after going to Hornets if he had trained to be a specialist.. knocking down 3s and occassionally being a sixth man... then I think JLin would be still playing. Oh well, Im still a fan tho... Hope he gets to play a few more seasons :)
I'm a Nets fan so it sucked to see him go out with an injury during the first game of the season and only play 37 games in 2 seasons. I wish he got to prove himself in Brooklyn. As a matter of fact, I wish he got to keep doing his thing with the Knicks. When Carmelo came back, it was said that Carmelo didn't want Lin to have the ball as much bc it would lower Carmelo's scoring.

Kobe basically ruined the last few years of his career by going all out to make the playoffs that year in 2012 since Howard and Nash were riddled with injuries and D’Antoni was overplaying Kobe to win games and make the playoffs which eventually led to the achilles injury, it’s a shame. You know when they allowed Lebron ( the 3rd best player in the league at the time) to join teams with D. Wade ( the 2nd best player in the league at the time) to beat Kobe (the best player in the league at the time). But they said it wasn't fair to small market teams to allow Kobe to get CP3.
Being Asian made it difficult for JLin to succeed in the NBA. RESPECT to him for accomplishing what he did.

He wasn’t as bad as MJ to his teammates. Don’t do Kobe like that. Jeremy is right about post Achilles injury kobe though. It’s tough when you have been so great, but can no longer lead by example in the same way. In contrast to MJ, at least he let go and showed respect. MJ has not even cared about any of the ppl he hurt and moves on like it’s just part of the game

I'm a Kobe fan, but I completely agree with Lin. There were so many games that the Lakers could've won if not for Kobe being a ball hog and forcing contested shots. And also he was the main reason my LA lost to Pistons in 2004 finals.
Kobe was never a ball hog he had multiple assist a game and is ahead of jerry west on the assist list but the thing is if his teammates were just standing around and not producing he would always take the matters in his own hands period.

Kobe is a ball hog 100%. You look at him on the "all time scoring" ladder, he's up there, but what you don't see is that he's also up there on the "all time missed shot" ladder. His efficiency rating has never been good his entire career, that's the definition of a ball hog. Yes, he scores a lot, but how many shots/possessions does he take up to get those points?

I am a Laker fan and Kobe is my favourite player. I remember this season and I do remember me getting frustrated because Kobe would shoot the team out of the game. Now 45 times in a game?? I don't think Kobe shot that much except for his final game so that might be a bit of a stretch. The thing is, he was just never the same since he came back, his shooting was not as good but having that confidence in himself he kept shooting thinking it would go in and too many times it just didn't.

Nobody wants to talk about part. Kobe took a contract that crippled the Lakers, got injured, came back losing a lot of his mobility & acted like an ass to young players. RIP to Mamba but those were horrible times.
