@@metalabsynth nope the original was Emry Arthur 1927 listen to that one first and The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913.
I'm not a fan of "this beats that", as I can enjoy any GOOD music and this cover definitely qualifies, but that said check this one out and see what you think, if you have the interest and time. Stick with it, pretty stock/tame up front, and some pretty cool and very nonstandard treatments within. It's not a 'stock' version, so to speak, but a lot of fun playing outside the numbers a bit for a portion of his take. If nothing else I expect you might enjoy some of the SERIOUSLY low unaltered vocal effects, use headphones, or better yet a good subwoofer and you can feel it as well as hear it...not kidding: ruclips.net/video/JQYYXN_Lilg/видео.html And now for something completely different, if you liked that, here are two awesome covers, on mostly porn for drummers and full up treatments, the other, just NUTS. The last one has just a few views, 157 million and climbing..stick with that one, two...it is something everyone should hear at least once, IMHO. It started out and I thought, "this is going to be hilarious". A few seconds later it was, "damn, this is great!". ruclips.net/video/4RS5RsSPssw/видео.html ruclips.net/video/e4Ao-iNPPUc/видео.html
@@andrewvachon1943 Just looked up a bunch of versions of this song. It seems this song goes back to at least 1913. There's a recording from 1928 on RUclips by Emry Arthur. It was popularized by the Stanley Brothers in the 50's.
The liner notes of this soundtrack have a line about modern country music that has stuck with me for many years. It' described it as "watered down pop/rock with greeting card lyrics." I'll never forget that. Oh, and this song is the main reason I bought that album. :)
I Like this version and Dan does a great job but this is a far more original version , you could say the original verion (in modern times ) by Ralph Stanley ruclips.net/video/q3BXwBBUf8w/видео.html
OMG this song and his heavenly voice is a beautiful sound to hear! I had never heard of him (until the movie)😭and to finally hear the actual singer is beyond what any words can describe!❤😇
I used to pick up my kid at high school in my black firebird. He liked being seen in that. But I also rolled down the window and cranked this every time. He hated it. I loved it. Such a great track.
Really terrific. What an incredible band Union Station is when you realise he's basically the second singer AND they have Jerry Douglas on dobro (plus Ron Block and Barry Bales)
Dan, this warms my heart, as a Polish man it is good to see that music is able to surpass the biases and the racial overtones, just as Jimmy H predicted. Thank you and are the MAN! Bluegrass On Brother!
Holy Geesh!! This guy sounds exactly like George Clooney!! If my eyes were blindfolded and I'm turned the other way I wouldn't be able to hear any differences whatsoever!! Amazing!!

First time watching this excellent cover. I absolutely love the wry smile when he has do his own back-up singing for "he has no friends to help him now" - brilliant!
@@classicsmajor9699 Depends what you mean. It isn't a cover of the song as recorded for O Brother Where Art Thou, but the song itself can be traced back to the early 1900's and even then may have been an existing song, so calling it a cover definitely fits. American Songwriter has a decent writeup online if you wanna read about it.
@@xduskflyerx If a song is in the public domain and, especially if the writer/composer is unknown, then can it really be called a cover? If a little kid sings "Mary had a little lamb" is that a cover? Are orchestras covering Mozart? I don't think the term, as commonly used, applies to this performance.
I Like this version and Dan does a great job but this is a far more original version , you could say the original version (in modern times ) by Ralph Stanley ruclips.net/video/q3BXwBBUf8w/видео.html
Undoubtedly this man does the best version of this song.
the only version, insofar as i can tell
dingle_mccringleberry Ralph Stanley did the original recording, in my opinion it’s not as good as this but check it out
@@metalabsynth nope the original was Emry Arthur 1927 listen to that one first and The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913.
You do know it was him singing for George Clooney in "O Brother, Where Art Thou"? George is always quick to give Dan credit for the voice over.
Well, the Blessed Bob did a version of this song on his first album back in 1962. I rather like that version.
I was born in Indiana but when I here this song I'm back in Kentucky once again.
He really doesn't sound any different than he did almost 20 years ago. Loved your music for years and and I'm still loving it
holy crap! it's been that long! wow. i'm not old but i feel old
Dang we're in a tight spot!
Get in, I'm about to R-U-N-N-O-F-T!
Gopher?
I'm a Dapper Dan man!
my hair!
I'll be 84 years old... well I'll only be 82!
This is insane. It feels like he's playing 3 guitars and his voice is as crisp as years ago!
Yea, amazing how it’s like he’s playing the percussion, rhythm guitar and those little licks all seamlessly.
he is using a double drop D open tuning which helps.
My dad always said he was the angry mandolin/guitar player, trying to rip the strings off everytime he plays. Just his style. 😊
@@dannyinausit’s a tremendous rendition. I was on here looking to see if anyone knows his tuning.
His rhythm play is spectacular
@@dannyinaus Which strings did he drop tune?
No matter how many covers I listen to, no one beats the OG

His voice is some incredible mix of haunting, yet clear and warm.
He has golden vocal cords hands to match pure talent.
This song is a legend due to him !
I love it
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Nailed the reverb on his voice and that mic was an excellent choice.
The song and performance that connects heaven to earth
yea , ok he is very good but Jesus connects us to Gods golden shore just like the song sings

Nuanced, expressive, taking, sober, credible. *Excellent!*
Best version I heard so far.
Thank you for this moment. 🙏
It ain't easy to play like this. It's harder to sing and play like this, but he not only does it, but also makes it look easy!
It's extremely hard to play this well AND sing that well at the same damn time..
Yeah, man. It's great. Crazy how such a loosey goosey style of playing requires as much precision as it does to not sound like a mess.
You can always learn to play like this - its much more difficult to learn to sing with such power. So its a dynamite combo.

“Hip hop for people scared of black people” best description of modern country I’ve heard
It just doesn't get any better than this.
Absolutely killer!! This is the guy who actually sung in the song for the movie 🎬
His voice is such a great and soft!! I love his style and his performances but he is so underrated :(
Zsuzsanna Pethő he’s one of the featured players in one of the biggest bluegrass bands out there, not underrated
