A truly wonderful series of videos - thank you so much. I lived and worked in Tokyo for 2 years and visited Japan at least 50 times when I worked in Hong Kong. I love the country, its beauty, history, culture and people. I have also transited the Pacific and Atlantic many times but never by ship - always flights unfortunately. But I did a cruise on a small boat from Vancouver up to Glacier Bay not far from Juneau in Alaska which was stunning, and also a 2-day trip on the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Banff. Equally stunning, especially seated in the panorama cars. I think I may have stayed in the same hotel in Vancouver as you - the Pan Pacific. Many thanks once again.

In Chicago he visited with friends constructing the Canadian exhibit for the 1892 World’s Fair. His diary is in the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. I wonder what he would think about this fancy train?

You are still 4 time zones to the east coast of Canada ... fun fact: the land area of the province of British Columbia is LARGER than the land area of California, Oregon, and Washington State in the USA - combined.
I'm glad that you clarified this point, however, I would suggest to future visitors to Canada, that you not rely on many of the facts/statements mentioned in this video because they are incorrect.

Those Via cars are great looking on the outside but old & clunky on the inside. It's time Canada's railway system come into the 21 century. These passenger trains need to be modernized.

Well done! I’ve done the trip twice in my younger years the opposite way. I live outside Winnipeg and while land especially agricultural land has become far more expensive in my lifetime… It will still not compare to Japan simply because of the relative size of the countries and their populations. And yes the Simplot plant has a rail siding to ship product out, mostly to the United States. Enjoy your travels !

A few little points from the start of your lovely video: !) The Fraser River is actually the largest river on the west coast that is not dammed for HydroElectricity. Some of its tributaries are for small scale projects, but the Fraser itself remains undammed. The primary rivers used for power in British Columbia are the Peace River, which eventually flows into the Arctic Ocean, and the Columbia River, which crosses into the United States and eventually flows to the Pacific between Washington State and Oregon. 2) the two tracks through the Fraser Canyon are there because they're two independent railways, and have been since the early days of Canada. They were originally competitors, with the CP line being built first, and the CN being built a decade or so later. However, now, through the Canyon, the two railways cooperate and eastbound traffic flows on one track, and westbound traffic flows on the other.
Oh the Empire Train is very scary compared to this video. But, the meals are luxurious on 1st class. But, it’s much smaller than this train. This train has more room to walk in. Try the Empire Railway in the U.S.
So far I watched up to 8:30. I noticed earlier in the video you said you could lock your cabin from the inside but not the outside. Then how would you stop other passengers from entering your cabin and stealing your belongings when you are not in your cabin?

Sorry but I think your title is a bit misleading since VIA rail does not operate a sleeper train from Vancouver to New York. Interesting fact about Winnipeg: almost all the staff who work on the Canadian reside in Winnipeg, making it easy for them to do crew changes in that city. @1:29:33 your lower third comment was you were arriving at Grand Central Terminal. But then a few seconds later your upper third says you are arriving at Grand Central Station. Fun fact: the difference between a Station and a Terminal is - a station trains pass through in both directions. A terminal, trains only come and stop and do not pass through, So your lower third was correct: it is indeed Grand Central Terminal.

Just a clarification about the airport in Toronto. There were a couple comments about the airport you past on the tour boat. This is not THEE Toronto airport. It is an airport yes but it is a small airport on that island. That's why it's called the Toronto Island Airport. Smaller jets like a 737 or propeller planes tend to goi there. THEE Toronto airport is a huge International airport with several large terminals. It's called Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

If that's Canada's best sleeper train, I'd rather go bike packing and camp somewhere in the woods :D I get that this train is really old, but still... Who would use a toilet in his sleeping place with just a curtain separating it from the corridor. Yikes.

Exactly my thoughts. Observation deck indeed is accessible by ski lift cabin. We did that back in april 2022 and then went for hiking

There's a solid locking sliding door. There's also a couple of washrooms at the other end of the car if you prefer.
Compared to Japan standards this rail line is a joke. Old and tired coaches book a flight!

The Amtrak 1st Class is better for their remarkable cuisine. The Empire train railway is fantastic for its service.
Amtrak doesn't come close to the cuisine on this train.
Five days are too long. It would be more enjoyable if it is just one day and one night.
