Episode Four - Fear and Trembling
I don't know. Maybe, when you look at me, you see an old woman, and I am 61. I've borne six children, had three miscarriages. Two of my sons are here today. Two were stillborn. My firstborn, Elron, killed in Korea - g**k sniper took off half his head. The point is... don't assume, just because I'm an old woman, that my back is weak and my stomach's not strong. I make this counter because a deal is always better than war. But no mistake - we'll fight to keep what's ours to the last man.

*THE BEST DISCUSSIONS* of movies and shows on youtube.
a 13 minute discussion on a 17 minute reaction.
both great, as usual.
I would not want to have Hanzee stalking me, he is a calm, cold and skillful tracker. Peggy has huge avoidance issues, she avoids the uncomfortable aspects of reality at all costs.
Hanzee likes sweet things. Rabbits, Fish Heads, the down trodden. Throw up a 'sign ' if you get it.
Jean Smart was phenomenal this episode. Love Mama Geirhart.
I love Fargo day.
Me too❤
Me 3❤😃
Mom, you look so vibrant. Motherhood looks good on you. Would love to hear an update on baby Schmitt.
Thank you so much! 🥰 she’s doing amazing! Growing so much and smiling and playing now 🥹
Kirsten Dunst does such an amazing job as Peggy, it only gets better from here!
Peggy is a great character, she's such a mess but it's so fun to watch
Agree about Kirsten Dunst as Peggy, the current Peggy is nothing compared to an actualised Peggy.
I knew her but I really only "discovered" her after this seeing what a good actress she really is.
Hansi's speech in the garage inclines me to believe that he had been a Tunnel Rat during the Vietnam war.
If that means nothing to you then you should check it out. Frightning work!
Prob my favorite single episode, which is a hard thing to pin down in Fargo. I just love the flashback scene, the standoff with Hanzee and Sonny/Karl - just a phenomenal episode in a brilliant season.
the theme of fargo is people making terrible decisions and trying to cover up those decision by making even more terrible decisions.
Like a tractor beam into this dark world...tension and danger is so dark, thick & heavy...impossible to look away.
Such masterful structure and portraits.
The UFO bits are a nod to the Coen Bros,' "The Man That Wasn't There" starring Billy Bob Thornton, Scarlett Johansson, and James Gandolfini.
Am pretty sure you gonna have people defending Peggy, as "noboby asked her what she wants". The thing is as you guys said, they both had an understanding that this is what they wanted, until she was being told to think bigger, but Ed already made up his mind, he isn't the type of person to pivot, he sticks with things, whereas Peggy doesn't. BUT lets also remember she almost killed a guy and tried to hide it and convinced her husband to help her dispose of him. So Ed earned his bones to do what he wants.
The fact that there are people that defend her is hilarious but not surprsing lol.
This is typically how it went. Men earned and provided for their wife and children. The lesbo hairdresser woman is upsetting the apple cart and filling Peggys head with visions of what SHE could be. Clash! They should have reached a compromise that suited both of them.
Yes, the butchershop is a good investment, but Peggy sees the seminar as an investment in herself. I think she's such a great character.
Wonderful reaction, it's great revisiting this season with you both. Regarding the UFO sightings - as I'm sure others may have mentioned - it's riffing on an element in the film 'The Man Who Wasn't There' by the Coens. Plus, it was certainly appropriate for the '70s era. Alleged sightings and conspiracy theories surrounding UFOs was at an all time high then, with a constant release of films, books, tv shows, relentless streams of media coverage. Also, look into the Val Johnson Incident in Minnesota 1979, which the show is tipping its hat to also. But this season - and the UFO sightings within it - are still being discussed, debated, and puzzled over to this day, which is a testament to just how beautiful the writing for this show really is. And you're only on episode 4!
Beyond The Man Who Wasn't There, I would argue the Twilight Zone ep The Monsters are Due on Maple Street _partially_ explains the UFO.
In that ep the UFO flies over a town, the power goes out, and the aliens sit and watch as the townsfolk destroy one another out of mistrust and miscommunication. The people are the monsters.
Whatta think? My theory crap? Noah Hawley has _definitely_ referenced the Twilight Zone before, so??? 👽
@@gggooding Not crap at all! Both of those themes are strong within this season, no denying it, I completely agree. I was merely referencing the hight of UFO paranoia in the '70s, but there's also the fine point you make here. I read an interview many years ago where Noah's mentioned TTZ - can't remember in what context - but I can now certainly see the mirroring of that episode and this season - that's a great pull, mate.
@@kylegacy Indeed the 70's UFO craze is part of it. Hawley layers in references almost too thick to penetrate. Ever notice that Hanzee's last name is Dent? Being careful I won't clearly spoil in the unlikely event TBR reads this, but when he's "abducted" by the UFO... certainly seems like that's when he metaphorically flips a coin and...then there's also the end of this season, is all I'll say.
And beyond the themes of the TZ ep, *everything* is catalyzed by Rye simply seeing a UFO. Even the plot of the TZ is here, somewhat.
Oh, well. Fun to speculate!
Yea its actually genuius how they worked in the ufo stuff in this season imo. With the whole "this is based on true events" bit, the UFOs make sense in the context of the story. Some people hated it but i love it.
Jean Smart is absolutely amazing in this show. Noah Hawley also cast her in Legion [my number 1 most insane TV show] with Rachel Keller, who plays Dodd's daughter. Jeffry Donovan, who plays Dodd, is most known for Burn Notice, where he plays a burnt spy, with Bruce Campbell. It's a villain of the week/season arc show similar to the original 80's Equalizer TV show, where he solves peoples problems but tries to get back into the CIA. His character is obsessed by yoghurt!
My absolute favorite season of any show. I never noticed them subtly foreshadowing that Lou is a vampire by needing to be invited into Ed and Peggy's house.
He pretty much invited himself in.
It’s definitely in my top five, probably second after season one of LEGION and then season three of LEGION. Lue is probably my favorite “good guy” from any show/movie
He was just being “Minnesota Nice.”
I had a doctor try to put me in a real and placebo medication test once. I told him No, I didn't come here to play any stupid games. Then I left without paying for my visit, it enraged me.
@18:11 ooof. This is sad considering what happened to Michael Hogan (the actor playing Otto). A couple of years ago he fell after a BSG convention, hit his head, which left him partially paralyzed with cognitive issues. Then his daughter had a seizure and was hospitalized with brain damage. Last year his wife had to put their home up for sale.
♥🙏
Wow, that’s awful
😓
I Miss Billy Bob!!!👍😂
When Ed and Peggy are talking with State Trooper Lou Solverson, Ed says he "slipped on some ice," which is why he was wearing a neck brace. This is the same excuse that Lester Nygaard gave back in Season 1 after he was given a black eye by Sam Hess.
We love the subtle connections! Thanks for pointing this out
@TBRSchmitt You're welcome!!! 😊
Solverson is a state trooper ;)
@@TBRSchmitt Please please please increase the frequency of Fargo! :) theres 4 seasons, plus and other stuff to watch. We only have limited time on earth! In a poorly expressed way, you guys are a pleasure to listen to. Cheers, and have a fantastic day.
This season's themes revolve around communication and failure to understand each other, in my opinion; I think that's what the UFO means, since aliens are the ultimate, inscrutable "Other" that nobody can understand.
Always fun watching great entertainment with a great couple!
I keep watching hoping one day you’ll say “Hi I’m TBR Schmitt” and instead of saying “and this is my wife Samantha” you’ll say and this is my horse fritz” and play the whicker noise from Django unchained but it never happens.
😂
Mike Milligan is my favorite character.
So there were actually a bunch of UFO sightings throughout that region around the time this season takes place. It was an inspired decision to make use of that history and make it part of the story.
In real life, it may have been low-flying helicopters doing radiation testing to make sure underground nuclear warhead tests weren't causing radiation to find its way into the country's food supply.
Yes indeed, heavy but exciting episode!
I went and watched this season through. Omg. It gets fucking nuts.
They just dropped a trailer for a new season of Fargo. My dad and I are stoked!!
Never trust a toilet paper thief.
Hanzee (Zahn McClarnon) is the stand out of this entire season. He’s currently on the AMC series “Dark Winds” & was on HBO’s “Westworld”. He’s a fantastic actor.
He's also on Reservation Dogs, one of the best shows on TV.
@@jlbarnes Yup. If you have AMC+ Zahn is on a show called “Dark Winds”.
Great reaction “ah”😜, it’s such A wildly awesome show! I love how Lue easily sees what is happening in the present and what will transpire to contrast his wife’s ability to see what’s happening, and how it happened. I see a duality between the two which is beautiful.
Besides Lue, who is my favorite character In this series, all the other individuals who I like the most in this series have been written beautifully in Noah Hawleys other series, called Legion, which I liked more than Fargo. Please check out Legion at some point even if it’s on your own it will blow you away much like this series
Can't wait for you guys to see Peggy's maze. 😂
😂
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊 Can't wait to see your reaction to John Carpenter's THE FOG and HALLOWEEN 2.
oh i hated the fog. The Thing, one of the best ever. The fog? man i wish i could have enjoyed it but its was c grade nonsense. (i wish i didnt feel that way)
Zero Spoil here:
When Hanzee loses time as he interacts(?) with the UFO...
Just don't forget that moment.
Great reaction. Cheers guys.
All the way to season 3!
this fella in the glasses is gonna find how effed he is
IMHO, the best thing Patrick Wilson has done - you miss Carradine but damn is Wilson amazing as Lou. :-)
Mahler in Fargo Season II? Fuck yeah!
It blew my mind that Hanzee turned into a fat Canadian in the first season. ;-)
"Give me a chocolate glaze a..."
Detective Hanzee Dent, the best detective in America period.
Season two of Fargo is at the top of these limited shows, that are like a really long movie, as well as season one of True Detective and another HBO limited series called Sharp Objects, which doesn't get it's deserved attention, because it's such a downer.
And finally, season five of Fargo is coming in a month!
Its his money he has the say on what to do with it lol
I flipping hate Peggy! You’re totally right, this is all her fault!
9:13 lot of cheeks this episode LOL
I love the amounts of fXcks in this reaction 😂
You guys are being a bit harsh on Peggy, lol. She's been going along with other people's decisions her whole life, she's just now realizing that she can have her own life. She's not used to making her own decisions and she's kind of under the influence of the other woman, partly because she's hearing things she wants to hear and is just kind of bursting with desire to start the life of her own choosing. Her husband isn't a bad guy but he's oblivious that someone, especially his wife, woudn't want the life he wants. Peggy is just realizing there's a life outside of that town and he's trying to get her to tie her even more strongly to the town by buying a business. Also getting a woman to have a baby is textbook chaining her to a certain life. She's my favorite part of the show, Kristen Dunst does a great job. It gets better with her character.
You can say all that but Peggy is actively screwing over her own husband. Funny its cool when peggy is literally uprooting her and her husbands' life based off of poor decisions but because "poor old peggy" he's effectively the "bad guy". And she's crazy lol, she killed someone and roped her husband into covering it up and hiding the body. How are people trying to defend her
"She's been going along with other people's decisions her whole life"
And instead of going along with Ed's decision (we have no idea whether Ed just made a decision and expects Peggy to go along or whether they both agreed to it and now she has regrets) she now goes along with her salon owner boss' decision. Great.
"she's just now realizing that she can have her own life"
And what does she do? Let her salon owner boss talk her into some bullshit scam seminar.
@@szeddezs No one said she's making good decisions, lol. She's used to people telling her what to do so it's not surprising she's susceptible to letting the salon owner manipulate her. What's attractive about that situation for her is that the new idea isn't the status quo...stay in town, have a baby, own a small business..with the unspoken part being that it eliminates a lot of other options. Yes, Peggy is a mess, but that doesn't mean she should have to live her life according to other people's ideas of what's 'normal'.
I love Peggy. You may never understand why but I'll explain further down in the season. I will say this. She's basically got the devil in her ear at the salon. That woman wants her and is planting ideas in her head, women's lib ideas, at a very women's lib time in history. That closeup of her birth control pills was for a reason. That was the key that freed women from a horrible fate. Housewife. I was a little girl in the late 70s and the general message was out there to not waste your life on marriage and children. I think that was a terrible message but it was very much in the zeitgeist.
Better episodes are coming. Hold onto your butts. You are going to be so confused about who gives the best performance by the end. 🙏🏼
It's a terrible message for some, a great message for others.
Please don't fall into the trap of thinking that Ed's dream is the only one that counts. Misguided or not, Peggy works full-time as well, and has her own dreams. She is just expected to be there to fulfill Ed's wishes. No one ever asks Peggy what *she* wants out of life. She's just trying to have something she can call her own. It never occurs to Ed that his wife might not want exactly the same things that he does.
I definitely felt for Peggy in that bathroom scene as discussed in the outro, but I was under the impression they had decided together to purchase the butcher shop and to start a family and then she was reneging on that, after the salon owner gets in her ear about this seminar, but I could be mistaken!
@@samantha_schmitt They never actually had a discussion. Ed just stated the things he wanted and assumed that Peggy was on board. We'll also get some insight on Peggy's hoarding behavior in a later episode. And we'll have a scene where it becomes clear that they're just talking *past* each other.
@@samantha_schmitt Hey Sam, in case you missed the other message. Please please please increase the frequency of Fargo! :) theres 4 seasons, plus other stuff to watch. We only have limited time on earth! In a poorly expressed way, you guys are a pleasure to listen to. Cheers from Australia, and have a fantastic day. Please seek out Palm Springs (2020), (look at the Rotten tomatoes score 94% - everyone likes it, critics and audience), they messed the marketing and it flew under the radar. OHand The Favourite (2018) - RT score 93%. enjoy :)
I get the feeling that their marriage was not a mutual agreement or was rushed due to pressure from parents or societal expectations. I think that Peggy is a Liberal Democrat and Ed is a conservative from observating their conversations. Sometimes opposites may attract at first but may not necessarily fit well in the long run.
People defending a nut case? Shocker
