There was a little nod to Fargo the movie too, when the shopkeeper said Ed was saying, “We’re going crazy down there by the lake.” Same line Buscemi used in the movie.
@@JacobWilt1394 Yeah, I noticed the "we're going crazy down there by the lake" thing before but only rewatching this reaction now did I realize the similarities to hitting the TV/messing with the antenna. Those subtle nods to the movie are great.
The scene of Hanzee standing up to confront Lou and Hank, and his hair sliding out of Peg’s hands mere centimeters from being cut. Literally missed escaping the life by a hair.
@@NWAWskeptic I viewed as a comparison to the Bible character Samson who was told by agog not to tell anyone the source of his power and if he had his haircut he’d lose that power, his wife nagged him until he told her and then she shaved his head in bed and he lost his power and was captured.
Ironically, they probably got a picture and the name Hanzee so quickly because he wasn't lying about his service record. The military would have a photo of him, the amount of tours and the medals he won would greatly narrow down the list of possible candidates.
They referenced No Country For Old Men, but during that came scene they also referenced the Fargo movie with the shop keeper saying "the merit saying we're going crazy out there at the lake" And then Peggy in the cabin hitting the TV to work referenced fargo movie as well.

Peggy Blomquist watches the same documentary about bark beetles as Marge and Norm do. Her watching the television also references Carl and Gaear. Both scenarios take place in a cabin and feature a character trying to fix a television set by hitting it.

This is my favorite episode, in large part because the one on one scenes between Peggy and Dodd. Kirsten Dunst and Jeffrey Donovan did such an incredible job. It's literally my favorite scene in all 4 seasons of Fargo, lol. Maybe because of the surprisingly comedic tone of it, it's just hilarious, especially to see Dodd in that situation. I also love getting to see inside Hansi a bit, he's been such an enigma the entire season. Zahn McClarnon is a really great, seasoned actor in so many things. He plays a very funny cop in Reservoir Dogs, among my favorite characters on that show with so many great characters. This is also my favorite season for sure. Season 2, 1, 4 and 3, in that order.
In Sioux culture your hair is linked to your soul, so him asking for a haircut probably refers to him wanting his life to end, or to end this life and start a new one
Peggy is a classic example of a proper sociopath. She's narcissistic, impulsive and completely oblivious to everything and everyone around her and she lives in a world of her own making. The best example of this is the scene with her and Ed when their driving Dodd's Lincoln, it's like they're having two entirely different conversations. Ed is thinking out loud but Peggy is carrying on a whole conversation basically with herself and while Ed's train of thought is based in what's going on around them, Peggy's is completely delusional and insane.
I'm so happy you are reacting to this amazing show, and not only because it's amazing, but because you both perfectly understand the balance of drama and humour with your reactions. Intelligent analysis, emotional analysis, and an appreciation for the absurdist comedy. I don't know why, but I still laugh when I think of Peggy stabbing Dodd (not sure what that says about me). And I also love that you feel some sympathy for Hanzee, one of the most memorable and strangely poignant characters in this world of Fargo.
Dodd, Jeffrey Donovan, was the lead character Michael on Burn Notice. Bruce Campbell played his best friend in Burn Notice, too. Donovan has also been in a bunch of other good movies, he's a talented guy. I highly recommend Burn Notice, even if just for your personal viewing pleasure. Such a fun, action, friendship, love, family and lots of spy stuff kind of show.
another little connection to the movie Fargo is in the convenient store scene with Honzi the shop owner says that Ed kept saying "Jeez we are going nuts down there by the lake"...the man shoveling snow says the same thing to a trooper about Buscemi's character asking about any lady action in the movie lol

Zahn McClarnon's delivery of the line "I'm tired of this life" was so simple yet held so much weight. He's a marvel & has been one of my favorite actors for some time now ("Dark Winds" anyone?). And those racist yahoos outside the bar were lucky Hanzee only shot their legs out from under them. I know it might not necessarily have been preplotted, but wish they would have stayed with this same actor for the Hanzee/Moses character for season 1.
So many little details with Hanzee in this episode. For one, when he gets harassed by those assholes in and outside of the bar, they call him out on Wounded Knee (there was an incident in the early 70s, where Native Americans in North Dakota tried to establish their own nation by occupying some government buildings), he shoots them in their knees. Literally wounded knee. And then him asking for a haircut is a reference to Native American children having to get haircuts at so called "Indian Schools" that tried to erase their culture. It's a huge sign of trust from Hanzee and when Peggy stabs him instead, it's a huge deal! It's like Hanzee trying to get away from his heritage, but not being able to.
Loving your reactions, reminded me how great the series are, so thought I’d find how you watch them again in UK and found season 5 on Amazon!! Happy days!!

Yeah so, that's the best episode. You can stop now. 🤭 I love it. I think that Peggy and Dodd would have made a great couple. It's a shame they didn't end up together. It's too unpredictable. You have a bunch of dead important characters and it hasn't even happened yet. Jeffrey Donovan (Dodd) is great. His role in Sicario surprised me because it was a smaller supporting role after he was the star of "Burn Notice" for all those years. He's starring in "Law & Order" right now but it's kind of a waste of his fabulousness. The thing about Hanzi is that the the Gerhardts treat him like a lapdog and you can already see some of the reasons why he's probably been ready to blow for a long time. There's another big piece of info that I think a lot of people who watched the show miss. You don't know it yet tho. Be ready and snacked up for the next episode. 😊

Hanzie (So scary yet I empathize with him the most: being a loner and people making fun of him his entire life) I have Asperger's and am a bookworm/gamer. So I understand. I think what makes Hanzie so scary is he's passive aggressive: He's so calm under pressure and unpredictable. 3. Don’t understand why DOD didn’t kill Peggy when he got loose ??!! He knew what she was capable of!! She over powered him and used the cattle prod on him and stabbed him and he knew she was crazy!!!
Yea. But he consistently underestimated her strictly because she's a woman which is what got him killed, ultimately. Dod wasn't that bright in the first place either lol
The "innocent crazy" is one of the most disturbing character types. Kirsten Dunst nails it. There's no trace of malice in Peggy, even though she's a demonstrable raving loon.
I would not feel too sympathetic for Hanzee, he actually did kill an innocent person. He finds Constance, the salon owner, in her hotel room at the seminar and unsuccessfully forces her to lure Peggy to reveal her general whereabouts, strangling her afterward.

Me personally … I rank the Fargo seasons 2,1,3,4 … but as you close out 2 … 3 is well worth watching … and 5 debuts this evening :)
For me....2, 3, 1, 4
Don’t understand why DOD didn’t kill Peggy when he got loose ??!! He knew what she was capable of!! She over powered him and used the cattle prod on him and stabbed him and he knew she was crazy!!!
Yea. But he consistently underestimated her strictly because she's a woman which is what got him killed, ultimately. Dod wasn't that bright in the first place either lol
He was waiting for Ed probably.
Dodd underestimated his daughter and Peggy and it killed him in the end
Well, we just stayed at the edge of our seat.
The "innocent crazy" is one of the most disturbing character types. Kirsten Dunst nails it. There's no trace of malice in Peggy, even though she's a demonstrable raving loon.
You need to do Burn Notice!
About scamming Gypsies ❤
You guys can't think of anything Hanzee has done wrong? Cinema is taking a toll. ☺
ikr, especially the murder of the Salon owner.
Peg and Ed are I believe are married in real life, with children
I would not feel too sympathetic for Hanzee, he actually did kill an innocent person. He finds Constance, the salon owner, in her hotel room at the seminar and unsuccessfully forces her to lure Peggy to reveal her general whereabouts, strangling her afterward.
This is the episode that taught everyone you should NOT be rooting for any of these people...they're all messed up
