Thank the lord that no American restaurant thinks beans on toast is edible.

I'm sure someone would think up a beans and toast roll, maybe even a hot pocket version, if it was popular enough....maybe for a UK chain, lol.

Beans on toast is actually quite good. Every time i go to England I have it and sometimes make it here in Texas. Nothing wrong with that.

@@kateg7298 I mean, it's edible. I've personally never had it. But these are both ingredients that probably every American has had. It's not hard to imagine how that would taste. I don't think it would be "bad" per se, just probably "meh".

We have gas stations and truck stops. Truck stops will always have a true restaurant/diner, rest facilities for long-haul drivers (showers, etc.) and gas pumps for cars and semis. Typically, they are located along an Interstate roadway, while gas stations are everywhere. These are variations combining some of both.

    • @cigarsgunsandgasoline8032
      @cigarsgunsandgasoline8032 29 дней назад

Um no... most truck stops consist of showers, overpriced junk food & a fast food restaurant, usually a Subway most of the time! T/A and Petro still have their restaurants but the food is lousy!

I work in a gas station grill in North Carolina. I work the breakfast shift. We have sausage, bacon, country ham, fried bologna, fried red hots and hot dry links. We also have eggs and cheese ,french toast, and potatoes with onions and we have just started serving fish cakes. You can get a sandwich if you like , on toast, biscuit, toast or just plain bread. And thats just breakfast.

    • @darlene9084

@petermiller4953 red hots are a smoked red link sausage.
Hot dry links are spicy(hot) or green links as some call them ,a raw link sausage .
By fish cakes I mean Salmon cakes or croquettes some call them.

When we moved to Texas we found that most gas stations have either a food trailer or some form of small vendor at them. Some are fantastic and some aren't but usually pretty fresh. Have had great tacos at random gas station/convenience store places you'd never think would have them.

I stopped at some gas station in north Florida on the way to the beach one time. They had a lot of choices, but what stood out to me was their fish sandwich. Basically 2 slices of white bread and a fried catfish fillet. Hit it with a little hot sauce and it was pretty good. So basic, but so good. I was regretting not getting a second one. And I also regret not writing down the location.

    • @jishani1

@@chrisb2535 I've lived in various cities in North Florida. The most common gas station food you'll find here is fried chicken and fish. But barbecue is pretty common as well. One town i lived in had a guy pull up a smoker outside a shell station and start selling barbecue. he expanded into a bunch of other gas stations, eventually opening a food truck and starting a catering service. Tacos are less common but generally really good when you find them. Hard to go wrong with seafood most places in Florida though.

A hoagie is a sub sandwich. There are many different terms for a sub sandwiches in the US: in the NYC area it is hero, in Boston it is a grinder, in northern NY State and many parts of the US it is a hoagie. There are also areas which say the same names for different sandwiches depending on if the sandwich is hot or cold. When it doubt just say sub. Sandwiches from Subway are always called subs no matter where you are in the US.

    • @garysmith3037

I always heard hoagie in terms of hot sandwiches. A steak hoagie for example, chicken parm hoagie, etc. But if it was a cold sandwich on a long roll it was a sub. I'm sure it changes based on the region you grew up in.

Most gas stations in the US are like the ones you describe. There's a few chains in different regions that try to attract customers with food or drink. WaWa, Sheetz, Quick Trip, Royal Farms, etc.
With longer drives, you just have to kind of get in the zone with music or conversation and it passes faster than you think.

And, my Wawa is not a gas station, just the store part. My go-to was turkey and provolone sliced on a sub roll, shredded lettuce and sliced tomato and onions with salt, pepper and oregano. Red wine vinegar and oil on the bread. If you put mustard or Mayo on the sub, we’ll know you’re out-of-towners! 😂🤌

Hot meatball sandwich: pick favorite baguette style bread, cut in half(leaving a edge connected) lightly tosst inside. Italian seasoning meatballs, same as you'd make for spaghetti. Prefer to put a little mozzarella cheese in the bottom of roll, slicing meatballs so they lay flat, spoon on marinara or pizza sauce, top with cheese (like smoked Gouda, mozzarella and a touch of Parmesan. Place in oven to melt cheese and enjoy! Very filling

I was attending a school in Minnesota, but I'm from Georgia. I managed the trip home for Christmas break in a day - 17 hours of driving. Set off before sunrise.
Returning north I'd stop in northern Illinois so I didn't have to deal with icy roads in the dark. I don't really want to put in those kinds of hours now that I'm not in my 20s, but it's doable. Anything 12 and under in my family was always done in a single day. There's no excuse to drag it out longer.
New York to Texas is 26 hours. If you keep to your 2 hour drive schedule it would take you two weeks. Probably cheaper to fly that distance, but it would be a hell of a road trip if that's the kind of American experience you want.

Wawa is really good. They offer salads and soup. They ordered the wrong stuff. The smoothies are excellent. They have fruit or coffee smoothies 😋. They, of course, have hot coffee and tea. They have all kinds of snacks. It's better than subways. You can add anything, ant kind of sauce, your choice of bread. The sandwich in Pennsylvania is called a hoagie. You can get a small or footlong. The Wawa footlong is longer than subways.

Hi from another Carol! From where I live, we think it's nothing to drive 3-4 hours one way to visit family/ friends or to go to NYC, Philadelphia, Buffalo/ Niagara Falls for the day and return home, but the older we get we do find ourselves sometimes staying overnight! Carol, the cold sub/hoagie they were trying is an Italian with a variety of Italian meats, like capicola (hot seasoned ham),salami, pepperoni and usually provolone cheese (or the cheese of your choice) and then onions, sliced pickled hot peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce and an oil/vinegar with herbs (or no herb) sub sauce sprinkled over it all. Your cold meatball sub sounds good to me, I love beets. we make a beet relish (especially at Easter, I'm part Ukrainian) that is made of grated pickled beets and freshly grated horseradish root. It is eaten at Easter with smoked sausage like kielbasa and with ham. We also love it on hot dogs and burgers. So good!

This summer coming in July me and my brother are going on our annual trip to see our family out in Salmon Idaho from Burlington Wisconsin. We take two weeks off and take our time and drive approximately eight hours a day with a couple rest stops in between. But we will take three days to go out there so we can enjoy our country that Many of our fellow Americans take for granted sometimes to enjoy the journey to our main destination. United States is amazing place. And even members including me of our family have not been to all the states but we are trying. I hope you too eventually can make your dream come true and come visit us in our country. And one day I hope to come visit yours. Keep the faith and it will happen.

Regarding your comment about driving to Texas from New York... if you were to drive from NY city to Austin Texas you are looking at a drive of 1752 miles or about 2820 kilometers. That is about 26 hours of driving but you would also need to stop for food, rest, bio breaks, stretching etc. So you would need at least two days and a lot of snacks along the way. This is why the suggestion is always to fly to a region of the US and then explore just that region by car.

A stop to stretch my legs, etc. at QT, or anywhere, after about 3 hrs is about right. But a 9 hour total day is not uncommon before stopping for the day. Most meatball sandwiches here are Italian style with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese.

For us, 6 hours is the farthest I can travel in 1 day, including stops, for 1 day. So, anywhere that is 6 hours or less, which comes down to 330 miles, from our house is where we go for vacation. We have very few passenger trains that go across America, so this is another reason why.
I REALLY, REALLY enjoy riding on passenger trains whenever I get the chance and hope we will get them here very soon!

Love that precious little Moa. Please give her some lovies from BNK, (Karen), and my fur babies, Maximus (Max), Ms. Rita, Atlas. Please consider also visiting Missouri on your trip to the US. Please??! I would definitely help out on costs of hotel, foods! P.S. There is a Buc-ee's near me and I've never been there, yet. I'm also one of those who considers a 2-4 hour drive nothing of any significance, even up to a 7-8 hour drive - meh. LOL. The drive from Springfield, MO to Admore, OK, (nearish the TX border - 20 miles away) was a crazy long 10 hour drive that I didn't care for though. I would also have zero patience for driving through Texas.

This actual wawa they were at is close to me in NJ area but they didnt even touch to the best stuff at wawa honestly. There is so much more ! It is definitely not a place that people go for tidiness, but for quick easy and pretty great food if you know the way around the menu

The very first wawa was built in my hometown of ridley. It's a suburb of Philly now they're everywhere you look. The food is good if you want something quick to eat or its 2 in the morning and your drunk. LOL There's to many small pizza shops that serve better food if you have time to order from them.

Usual gas station food is probably similar to what you have. There is a roller grill for hot dogs & sausages. If you are lucky, they have only been on the grill for a few hours instead of most of the day. Buc-ee's & a lesser degree Wawa & Walley's are changing that. The other gas stations will have to up their game. And filthy bathrooms.

To much choice is never a thing! If you choose to keep it simple, thats fine, but everything should be available. I was used to working usually 6 hours away from home, and being in a hotel most of the week. I have worked just under a 23 hour drive east and west of home, luckily I live near the center of the contiguous U.S., so thats near the limit I could drive.😊(edited for typo)

Well the Jolly guys weren't that impressed by Wawa. I'm not even sure what area of the country they're located in. But I can tell you this, it takes almost a day and a half to cross the entirety of Texas from East to West. Not sure about North to South. Like I have said before, it would take me 6 hours to get to the closest Buc-ee's and that's even going 75mph.
