I just added one of these upstairs to help coverage in our second level. It works great, it was super easy to setup and has eliminated all the dead spots in my home. Well worth the price point.
Very interesting that nobody mentioned an obvious downside of this big boy: covering up not only one but two power sockets. idk but powerlines had the same problem in the beginning but they managed to design them to pass-through the power socket and they also have versions with included wifi.
I was also very surprised by this. Doesn't seem like it would have been that difficult to pop a couple pass through sockets on the front of that thing.
I have one of these "meshed" with a NanoHD, but find that the 5Ghz band is also being used as backhaul. So speeds are about 1/2 when I connect to the Beacon vs the NanoHD. This is more of a "repeater" than a "mesh" due to lack of dedicated backhaul, in my experience. Still helps bring Wifi into low-signal areas, but at half the throughput.
I actually got one of these for the exact reason you did. I have it on the wall directly behind the doorbell location. i also created a separate SSID that just the beacon broadcasts and tie the doorbell to it so its all by itself because I was having lots of problems with disconnects when it was connected directly to my Nano HD from a further distance. The Beacon is working great to support the doorbell. Made the entry point on the doorbell a little more expensive but happy with it so far.
Problably the 97% experience is the average of the experiences of all clients connected to this AP. But afer all, this is very nice device and very practical solution to extend wifi signal.

The UK would of course be left out (hence their own drop-down), but in return, Brazil would be compatible.

I’d like to see the process for setting the BeaconHD up meshing with a UAP-AC-Pro or NanoHD with an offsite controller. I’ve done it, it was as easy as what I just saw, but it did work. My controller is on a vm in my house. I shipped it off to a person whose AP’s also are connected to my controller and couldn’t ever get it to adopt. The firmware is up to date and the controller external IP is in the controller setting on the EdgeRouter.

By adding one of these does it take away from the maximum throughput for clients still connected to your primary AP such as your nanoHD? I’m worried about weather this will slow down my existing clients on the AP it will uplink/mesh with. Also can I limit which SSIDs are advertised off of it? Basically I just want my security cameras connecting to it.
What's the lowest usable Wireless uplink quality levels people are able to work with? At a family member's place, I have one working at like 17-20% (on a UAP-AC-Lite going back about 200ft to an outdoor UAP-AC-M, with NLOS) and seems to work ok according to them (which is a tad surprising to me - I haven't had the chance to get back up to where they live to install a nanostation ptp link). Controller says 100% 5G experience - so I think that 2G/5G experience is the clients to that AP, not the wireless uplink quality/

It should connect to anything in the Unifi ecosphere from the last few years. Even the AP lite will support it as the uplink side (or it can act as downlink meshed AP). However, one will get the best performance with another device the supports MIMO, preferably 4x4 MIMO such as the nanoHD, in-wall HD, FlexHD, etc.
@@winstonscentraltechnology4238 In my prior post, when I said MIMO, I meant MU-MIMO. Anyway, glad to help. FYI- I have mesh AP that I meshed to a AC-lite without issue as an experiment for the last couple months.
Its funny I literally saw this product tonight on the EU UI site and was thinking I wonder has Chris tested it!! Chris, do you reckon for a domestic install of say a 2 storey house, 1500 square feet this would be ideal for a first floor, bouncing it off a Udm or ac pro on the ground floor. I’m thinking this could be a very quick deployment to give someone full WiFi coverage after they go from adsl to ftth which is happening a lot here in Ireland as we role out a country wide ftth network.
I agree with Chris, one AP should cover an entire house unless there are other interference factors coming into play. Location is really important - ceiling mounted in the center of the second floor is likely the best. For a long time I only had one AP for a 2 story 2500 square foot house and it was not bad, but I have expanded since then to get better outdoor coverage.
Zeric E getting cables to the centre point of a ceiling in a domestic situation can be tricky, that why I thought this might be a winner. Plus I guess depending where you are from matters too. In Ireland most houses are made of concrete, mass concrete floors and steel. They also love to use foil back insulation. Not the ideal set up for WiFi. Compared to many houses in the states where timber frame is very popular.
@@eoghanfla6343 Ah yes, concrete and steel are problematic for wifi...and running cables. In the US, homes are not expected to stand for hundreds of years like the ones in Europe so they are built differently. People in the Americas tend to want to upgrade so old homes are more likely to be demolished and replaced than in other parts of the world, unless the building has some historical significance.
Thanks for the video. The beacon was announced in stores in The Netherlands (eg. Routershop.nl) but it has been removed from the websites. No idea why. Currently I can't find it either.

It disappeared completely. :( (also on other well known websites)
I could use something like this in my house, except in a 70-year-old house owned by a technology geek, there aren't any receptacles that don't have at least one device plugged into it. This design essentially means that you lose access to the other outlet in a receptacle. I'd love to see a version of this that has an external power supply. Then again, I'm more likely to run wires to where I want more coverage, even though its a crawl through a dusty, hot attic.
A pass through outlet would have been nice. I too try to hardwire anything that is stationary. The only wireless devices are phones, tablets, laptops. All desktops, streaming devices, cameras, etc are hard wired.
Garbage in, garbage out. Why was it never mentioned to put this in the middle point of the device that has poor coverage and the AP it is connected to?
@Scott Luther It would only take a simple adapter to use it on most any electrical system, however it would not be as clean of a look. They are working on some EU versions, someone said there is one for the Netherlands. Although most of the EU uses the same basic plug, the socket side varies widely making a universal regional version difficult.
True, even if the "plug" is the same, the sockets are too different. Something of note is the US version supports EU power so only a simple adapter would be needed, no need to shift the voltage. Works on 100-240VAC, 0.3A Max, 50/60 Hz
Mesh access points talk to each other, so clients always connect to the best one. Repeaters don’t, the clients clings onto whatever one they’re currently connected to.

@ it worked quite well, i just upgraded the FlexHD to the U6-Mesh with the same extender and it continues to work fine, the periodic software updates have helped the product
Received the EU (Unifi 6 Extender) version today, updated the controller to 6.0.23, does not show up. Contacted Ubiquity, they said they can not support because it’s an Early Access product and referred me to the EA community 😢
Gave up on it. Shipped it back today to Ubiquity, had to pay the shipping costs myself for returning a product which does not work. Learned one thing, do not buy Early Access products.
Nice review. I ordered one of these Sunday (to pair with my UDM that can’t quite cover the whole house). Unfortunately, my order is still sitting there “unfulfilled”. Hoping it ships soon.
Quick question about the beacon set up, do you keep them on the same channels as the uplink or do you separate them?
Is this the same as the U6-Extender-US ? It looks exactly the same but it different?
Hi please I have a question I just upgrade mi isp speed to 1gb, with wire cable I have around 800 to 900 mb, I have a unifi USG, UniFi Poe switch, and a UAP-AC-LR if I make I speed test in an iPhone X what numbers I supposed to see, I want to use all the speed I am paying for, if I need to replace my actual AP which one you can recommend me thanks for your time
Which UB device is good for hotspot and has a long distance?
hey chris , does it work with other brands of access point
Nope
Do you set the Band Steering to Prefer5G or have it balanced or Off? Just curious, I set my two devices to Prefer 5G this morning and will keep an eye on the for the next few days to see if more devices connect at 5g over the 2.4... Do you have a list of settings you use for most of your AP's? I know everyone AP can and will be different but there might be some settings you found that were very good to have set?
I wonder why ubnt feel that it's necessary to take up the whole outlet.
It gives it a very clean look, but I agree it's quite a waste. Either take up only one or have a pass through outlet.
EU Version: eu.store.ui.com/collections/early-access-access-points/products/unifi-6-extender-beta
do the UniFi AP BeaconHD works on 220v? I have concern only works on us 110v, if can do both just wall plate issue
According to the specifications on the Unifi site (did you look? ;) 100-240VAC, 0.3A Max, 50/60 Hz
Still not available in EU :/
Can you specify which AP (if you have multiple APs) you want the Beacon to link to?
Well, since the BeaconHD is 4x4 MU-MIMO it would be best paired with another 4x4 MU-MIMO AP such as the FlexHD or the nanoHD.
@@CrosstalkSolutions will the beacon hd reach the flex hd at a 1000 ft outdoors?
can the beacon connect to a unifi ap ac LR .........or even unifi mesh ap?
It should connect to anything in the Unifi ecosphere from the last few years. Even the AP lite will support it as the uplink side (or it can act as downlink meshed AP). However, one will get the best performance with another device the supports MIMO, preferably 4x4 MIMO such as the nanoHD, in-wall HD, FlexHD, etc.
@@timezonewall thanks
@@winstonscentraltechnology4238 In my prior post, when I said MIMO, I meant MU-MIMO. Anyway, glad to help. FYI- I have mesh AP that I meshed to a AC-lite without issue as an experiment for the last couple months.
@@timezonewall appreciate the help
Would it work with a UAP-LR
Cute solution. Please tell me you can turn the blue light of though...
You can set the brightness level and also change it to different colors.
@@CrosstalkSolutions I've got it in the bedroom and have set it to 5% brightness and it's still pretty bright. Love the option for colours though.
Thanks for the EU Beta store hint.
Damn, the things are sold out.
Hope to be able to order one asap.
What was there beacon hd for EU users?
Its funny I literally saw this product tonight on the EU UI site and was thinking I wonder has Chris tested it!!
Chris, do you reckon for a domestic install of say a 2 storey house, 1500 square feet this would be ideal for a first floor, bouncing it off a Udm or ac pro on the ground floor. I’m thinking this could be a very quick deployment to give someone full WiFi coverage after they go from adsl to ftth which is happening a lot here in Ireland as we role out a country wide ftth network.
For a 1500 sq ft house, I would think a centrally located single AP would be fine. I had just a UAP-AC-PRO in my last house for years without issue.
Was it a version specific to the NL socket, or was it a US version with an adapter? The unit it self supports 100-240VAC, 0.3A Max, 50/60 Hz
@@timezonewall I am not sure however, I suppose it was meant to be a version with a NL socket. The Beacon was announced as a common product.I doubt whether the shop has ever had one or just expected it to come soon. After seeing the video I was curious whether it was still on the website.
Surely you can plug an extension cord into the back of the beacon...? Not necessarily ideal...
A pass through outlet would have been nice. I too try to hardwire anything that is stationary. The only wireless devices are phones, tablets, laptops. All desktops, streaming devices, cameras, etc are hard wired.
Can you plug one of this outside? Or is it indoor only?
Indoor only - if you need an outdoor mesh AP, I would recommend the UAP-AC-M.
Garbage in, garbage out. Why was it never mentioned to put this in the middle point of the device that has poor coverage and the AP it is connected to?
Thank you Chris!!
plz review the UniFi 6 Lite Access Point. that is in beta
Ubiquiti doesn't allow for review of Early Access products because they aren't finished products.
It doesn't work with the EATON screwless plates !
Thanks for the review of the BeaconHD. I would like to request a review on the USW-Lite-8-PoE as a replacement of the US-8-60W. Thanks
I need something like this but with an ethernet port on it so I can finally dump my crappy Netgear EX6150's that I use as wireless bridges.
Totally agree, would love this with a lan port that I can feed into a POE switch in attic for cameras.
Uplink a UAP-AC-IW
@@paultech9385 I actually went ahead and bought a couple and installed them (wired) today, my network is much happier now.
i have a mesh with ap-ac-pro. so i can just run cable one day without replacying the ap
Is it auto volt? 100-240volt?
@Scott Luther It has a USA plug, but does indeed operate over a wide range. According to the specification: 100-240VAC, 0.3A Max, 50/60 Hz
@Scott Luther It would only take a simple adapter to use it on most any electrical system, however it would not be as clean of a look. They are working on some EU versions, someone said there is one for the Netherlands. Although most of the EU uses the same basic plug, the socket side varies widely making a universal regional version difficult.
Can't imagine them doing an EU version of that, we all each do our own thing in regards to sockets.
True, even if the "plug" is the same, the sockets are too different. Something of note is the US version supports EU power so only a simple adapter would be needed, no need to shift the voltage. Works on 100-240VAC, 0.3A Max, 50/60 Hz
I was wondering what a speed test would show ?
Please elaborate (aka make a video) on the difference between mesh/repeater/wireless uplink.
Mesh access points talk to each other, so clients always connect to the best one. Repeaters don’t, the clients clings onto whatever one they’re currently connected to.
One of these with a RJ45 jack would be handy... one of these with a POE RJ45 ... even handier !
Yes there is the Extender 6 for Europe in EA atm ;)
Wifi 6 you mean? Is it the same design?
Aside from the alien, is there any talk of them releasing wifi 6 access points? I feel like a lot of people are waiting for these.
Yes, there are a few different versions in early access as well as a new switch that has 2.5Gb PoE+ ports to better utilize wifi 6.
I emailed them a few weeks ago and they said 1-2 months
@Crosstalk Solutions Can you select which radio is used for the wireless uplink? Say, if I wanted to use the 2.4 GHz radio exclusively for the uplink, and the 5 GHz radio only for the WLAN...
i wish i could dedicate the 2.4ghz to the uplink/backhaul. i dont see it in my settings, but doing so would maybe eliminate the halving of throughput.
Wow it takes up both sockets and then some!
UAP-BeaconHD-EU is what we in EU will use
Thanks to your video, I decided to buy the BeaconHd directly from Ubiquiti
2 weeks later even with Ubiquiti’s tech support, I couldn’t get it to work on my 3 year old ubiquiti system. I had all the latest access points, cloud key gen2 and latest firmware, but the beaconhd was always stuck on adopting wireless.
Ubiquiti’s tech support than suggested I do an RMA to return it.
This product is just not ready for prime time, unlike previous Ubiquiti devices. This is definitely the first negative experience, I have had with a Ubiquiti device.
I am not alone in having issues with it.
Use caution when considering this device.
Humble brag that you have a G3 micro!!
I was thinking the same thing...lol!
The wifi experience of 96% is the average of the 2 devices. 100% + 93% = 193% ÷ 2 = 96%
I was building on rage on how some people believe that the world is North America and Europe until I saw the plug 😬
Pretty Fly 4 a WiFi kkkkkk loved your SSID name!!!
This is called Fritzbox in Europe.....been on the market for at least 8 years. fritz 2400
Is the fritzbox not a router that isp’s use? At least I’ve installed in sites with the red fritz, can’t say I liked them
@@eoghanfla6343 The fritzbox is a router, however, the Fritz 2400 is not a router (it is the same thing that is in this video and I have many of them connected to ubiquiti. It does the exact thing the whole video does and has been around since 2012.
Daniel Laizure ah I see. I haven’t come across them before. Good to know though thanks
That is obnoxious. It totally eats up the entire outlet
I think they did that so it has a very clean look, but they could have added at least one pass through outlet.
The wifi experience is A. Funky. And B. Includes like packet loss. Resends. Errors. It isn't just signal strength.
I am not a fan.
Wasn't this device among the wireless devices affected by the recent firmware update debacle?
Is it only me who want to do the setup of UBI equipment via a normal PC with a browser instead of the shitty app?
You can! To me though, the app is just as simple.
i waiting eu version.
omg i’m going crazy o can’t do it
