Please be advised that to use wireless uplink you have to enable (it´s enabled by default) this stupid new option called "Uplink Connectivity Monitor" and you can´t have more than 4 SSID´s configured in your network. Otherwise the mesh options disappear in your AP´s config page. I just learned that the hard way... But the Ubiquiti community is really great and helped me in minutes !

Most of the video on the internet only show how to install it physically, you are going to config details and real life scenarios, when you dont have cable everywhere. Good work and thank you!

I have this set up in my double storey home. AC PRO is wired to a Ubiquiti switch and the AC-LR is connected via wireless uplink to the AC-PRO. Works very well & I haven't noticed much of a speed drop on either access point.

I set up a couple of APs at my parents vacation home where they have one main house and a guest cabin. The two are around 25m apart. There's a UAP-AC-LR in the main building, with LOS through windows to the side of the cabin. Behind one layer of wood planks, no insulation (shed) there's a UAP-AC-M. There's also a second UAP-AC-M in between for covering some dead spots in the kitchen. Both UAP-AC-Ms uplink to the LR (1 hop). Uplink quality is ~50% (-70dBm)
It works okay, however I'm seeing pretty slow iperf speeds. 30 Mbps end to end. Now that'd be fine, however the bigger issue is that it seems the service is intermittent, only really noticeable in real-time applications like multiplayer games where you'll stutter now and again. It's a lot better since forcing the downstream APs to uplink to the LR, however still not as good as I'd expect.
I thought I had it solved as it was working great for a while at 1am, as I got full ISP provided speeds (couldn't run iperf at the time), however now it's back down to ~30mbps again, both on speedtest and with iperf. Any idea where I'd want to look to fix that? Especially the intermittent

Can you do deeper into how to do the initial setup of the AP that isn't connected!!! Also, can you add in some details on actual throughput and latency impacts, like maybe a iPerf with 1, 2, 3 hops?

Posted some follow-up on the forum. I will try to do UAP-AC-PRO to UAP-AP original series (2.4GHz only) to boost for areas 'away from the main racks' where I genuinely don't fancy drilling through cabling again. I have some options for cabling if all else fails, but I would love to avoid due to not having any time for myself at the moment with COVID-19 work load (I work for a logistics company but we are doing remote go-live support which is a bit tricky when a customer is new to the whole system and approach). Appreciate the video, it looks promising as an option for the low-bandwidth or sporadic use that is likely to be involved for my application at home.

I would have liked to see a iperf3 speedtest for this mesh set up. With my Orbi satellite w/ wireless backhaul, I get 500 Mbps (gigabit fiber connection) downstairs in my basement. With a UAP HD + Nano HD wirelessly uplinked, I get ~150 Mbps max. Devices are in the same exact location, and all the firmware is updated. If you're going to do wireless uplink but care about throughput, there are better (cheaper) options out there.

Hi Tom, thanks for all your excellent content! Did you do any tests on the speed impact using a mesh network? I’ve often seen figures around the 50% in speeds (as the network uses its bandwidth to backhaul). Is this the case with the UniFi AP’s? Thanks!

Great vids. Question. if an AP pro is in wireless uplink, will the secondary port on the AP pass through ethernet? Say to connect a hardwired device?

  • @koffibanan3099

Hey, could you show how big the speed drop is (maybe with iperf)? I'd expect the throughput would be less than half (every packet has to be sent twice + processing time). Thanks for the video!

OK but how do I stop the Unifi from using mesh. I have a 3rd party 28 Port 10GB Switch with POE++. Unifi has nothing like it so I don't want to switch. Each time I connect two or more unifi APs to it, Unifi puts the APs into mesh mode eventhough they are directly connected to the switch.

    Hi Tom
I have setup a UAP pro in mesh. It is powered by Poe from a unifi switch that has no other connection to the network. It gives internet connectivity back to the switch which has some devices wired to it. Everything works fine. But I noticed that my entire WiFi network which has 5 other APs with wired uplinks have started to have higher latency and occasionally dropped connections. How can I solve that?
    Always enjoyed your videos.
    Thanks.

It seems that I read somewhere that when you use mesh connections on these traditional Unifi devices, that it cuts the speed by 50% for every mesh hop. Is that true? I may be remembering incorrectly...

Hi! Having issues with handoff between APs as I roam around the property. Have 1 UAP AC Lite, and 2 UAP-AC-M-US Unifi Mesh AP. I have followed your video to the T, and still have a terrible time getting signal even 30 feet through a wall. I can walk outside and get a sad 3mbps, (of the 25 provided by ISP) then turn off my wifi, turn it back on and run the test again and get 13 mbps. I can SEE the Mesh antenna through the window and its only 40 feet away and im barely getting half speed. I logged a ticket with UNIFI and they had me to separate, static channels on each of the 3 devices and that only made hand-offs worse. I assumed getting rid of my LinkSys working with the UAPACLite would be best to integrate with only UNIFI gear but it appears to work worse?!?!?!? Suggestions? Is my Mesh gear faulty possibly?

    • @MattVey

This is my similar issue. From all my reading and watching vids, it seems that your device (laptop, phone, etc) will need to completely disconnect from whatever AP t is on currently before it will connect to a closer and/or higher power AP. It would be great to find a video explaining this. I've found them talking about this when using routers with the same SSID but nothing talking about APs or Meshed APs.

Hello, question on my setup: I have my 4K NVR 8 Channels with 8 Camera's connected that's in my garage with no Ethernet cable. My plan is to buy 2 APs. 1 in the garage and 1 in my room which is right above my garage. The one in my room is going to be hard wired to a switch. But my concern is, would that set up be enough to keep up with my NVR bandwidth? I want to be able to live stream the video when i needed it with no delay or long buffering. Thank you.

Been trying to find an answer to the following. If you mesh to other AP's do the other AP's automatically get the same channel width as the source? i.e. Wired AP has VHT40 do the others end up with VHT40 as well or can you set say VHT20 ? It's looking like the Wireless connected AP's ignore the radio setting and stick with the link AP's channel width. Testing a nanoHD to two LR's now and the LR's appear to be ignoring what I have the radio's set to for width on 5Ghz. What they say and what clients are connect at don't match, connecting at 40Mhz speeds vs 20Mhz which I have the LR's set to.

I tried to set this up at a job site and couldn't get it to work. It seemed to work briefly and then the AP would start to blink blue, which I found out means that it's isolated. I ended up just running the network cable.
If I'm using an AP fresh out of the box, I have to adopt it first right? That's what I did, and I made sure I was able to connect to it, then moved it to the area where I had no network cable. It would go into the "isolated" status, even after moving it so that it was right next to the uplink, connecting it to LAN, and even after rebooting. I had to turn off wireless uplink in order to get it to start communicating again.

    The problem!
No markup......zero tech support. beware anyone thinking about using ubiquiti products. The only support you will ever get is through other installers. As they have no support. You'll try chat only to wait and wait and wait. Then when you get someone they may have no actually field time. So something you think will take a minute or two ...well lets just say you will be saying are you kidding me! Beware. It can be great stuff, BUTT! you may want to look to a company that allows for at least some profit so you can afford the warranty issue should it arise. Zero Profit ...............you have to rely soley on labor rate. That will pay for the truck, insurance and a little salary....as the Joe Walsh album is titled But SeriouslyFolks!
