After watching this I immediately ordered the Dream Machine to replace my aging router. The WiFi connection speeds on all connected devices more than doubled. Even our big screen TV, which is directly wired, was faster than when wired into my old router which I wasn't expecting. Devices that would drop connections sporadically were now connected 100% of the time, which made me realize just how flaky my old router was. The user interface is next level insane with the amount of details and control it provides. One thing in particular that really impressed me (among so many other things) is the ability to block traffic coming from any country displayed on the world map even when no threat is detected.
Hi Chuck, I took my dream machine on holiday this year, thanks for the tip!. Even though the rental only had a 30mb connection compared to our 300mb connection at home; the dreammachine did a great job of keeping everything going smoothly. not once did I have to ask the kids to stop streaming so I could watch Netflix :)
A really fantastic review! I purchased one based on this (as well as the UniFi AP Beacon HD Meshpoint). Currently renting a basement leaving 2 families in the same home, and I desperately needed a second SSID + VLAN to protect the server my wife and I store sensitive documents on, and keep random guests from being on our network. A worthy upgrade from our Google Wi-fi network! Seriously can't believe you can do 4 networks with separate VLANs in a consumer grade router that is equal in cost to anything decent you'd get from best buy. Fantastic!
Thanks for a great video. Well structured and well edited with just the right amount of information. I was very disappointed with my DM until I moved to the PC management interface rather than the phone app. Suddenly, all the great features were there - firewall rules, port forwarding, IPS and more. Following along with your video, I was able to set up my whole network the way I wanted it in about an hour.

This sounds awesome! I've been needing to upgrade to a more intuitive router that will protect my family. Since I've got kids that are growing up and learning to use the internet and plenty of IOT devices I need the ability to customize router options to protect my little SOHO network. Even if I don't win this giveaway I'll definitely be checking this product out. Thanks Chuck for exposing me to this device.

The IDS/IPS function is a worthy security feature for a home user. I love the overall 'look' of this unit as it is similar to my Airport Extreme (needing to replace it with something soon!). Enjoyed your review and your positivity (5-stars)
Just got mine a few days ago to replace my good old trustee AirPort Extreme. I really like the GUI and had fun looking into all the settings. I love that it's sleek and not ugly like 99% of the routers on the market. I love it. Also, it's easy to setup with the app.
Dude, you are most definitely my favourite networking teacher on RUclips. I love your energy and speed. Don't ever change your delivery!
(I can pause and rewind the things I didn't catch, but your a dream come true for us manic people who want info fired at us!)
What a breath of fresh air you have been, Chuck. I have been overhauling my home network after a lot of weird activity on our network. You have given me such piece of mind over my home once more.
looks pretty sweet, probably a tad overkill for my needs but I'm loving the unifi equipment
Love this device. Bought one several months ago and the only additional thing I did was add an additional access point on our back patio.
Love your enthusiasm that you have in your videos, you really know how to express yourself :)
My favorite part of the dream machine is how everything is built in. I was speccing out a full UniFi setup, and then found this device - much cheaper and will do everything I was wanting to do! #DreamMachine
Just done the same thing - shame there isn't any PoE on the ports though.
he's drinkin coffee lookin like ron swanson, mentions ron swanson, then his flippin shirt has ron swanson on it whos drinkin coffee. This was some type of inception here my friend. Well played sir, well played.
This is an awesome video. Thank you for posting and going through the basics of using the device. It is very exciting that all these features are incorporated in one device!! I do really like Ubiquiti products - this reinforces it. Thanks again.
Great info and break down of the dream machine. Wish I would have found your channel earlier. Congrats to all the 3 people that won. I’m in the process of looking at doing a network with all ubiquiti stuff.
Why no discussion of the privacy and security implications? No WPA3, but Ubiquiti said in Feb 2020 that it's "coming soon" and they haven't applied for certification but "they'll be ready" when WPA3 is required; spoiler alert - it's been required for certification by the WiFi Allliance since July 2020. They've been silent on this for months. Some features of UDM also require remote access to user data: possibly Threat Management (like Asus AiProtection), and a UniFi account is REQUIRED to even use this thing. These seem like glaring omissions for someone who teaches security to security professionals. I guess when Ubiquiti is paying the bills, you don't bite the hand that feeds.
Nerdy tech guy, Unifi, Ron Swanson, coffee, snazzy shirt, and a kick-ass beard. You won my subscription 5 minutes in, and my heart almost immediately.
Oh wow, I am just starting the video and have a bunch of AP's from Ubiquiti but the fact that it has the Cloud Key built in is amazing!
I ended up buying this. and being someone that is stuck on crap att dsl that maxes out at 100mb. this thing helped me a bunch. I only used the one and I went from spotty wifi and slow internet speed of 15mb to 80mb and wifi that seems to be great all-around my house. it feels like it manages what you have better cause everything seems to just load better. now I'm obsessed with adding the correct photos to everything in my house. good product and good review.
Great review. I’m getting one to replace an aging and failing AirPort Extreme.
After I watched this video. I went and bought this. I absolutely love it!
You are easy to hook. Can you send me $100?
@@Burevestnik9M730 what?
the UDM, the point of the whole video
28 minute vide, but you make clear what the device is about in the first two, exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for the video man. I work for a company that installs unifi waps and other networking stuff. I have been lookin for a new router and came across your video. The bonus is that I will get this at wholesale. Super excited. Thanks for breaking everything down.
As someone who has been studying, and interested in security, I think it's awesome that the #dreammachine has both an IDS & IPS are baked in. I also think the AI wifi scann/adjustment is slick!
Hey man, i just saw the Unifiy Alien, is that the replacement for dream machine or will dream machine get its own wifi 6 variant/update? great vid
I think the Alien Router you're talking about is part of Ubiquiti's AmpliFi line which is the home user version. It's meant to be simple for the average user. The Ubiquiti's UniFi line is meant for advanced users and small businesses so it offers more settings for security and management features. The Dream Machine is part of that UniFi line. I'm waiting for them to make a Dream Machine with 802.11ax (WiFi 6).
@@NumbersSans I'm waiting for a Wi-Fi 6E version.
your videos are great and your voice is for some reason soothing but i love what you teach and how easy it is to learn and how fun it is...keep it up
I bought one today because of this video. It is an incredible piece of kit. I am blown away
we need the black one with a screen to come out soon !!
I love how the dream machine integrates so many devices into one. My favorite feature is the DPI and IDS. #dreammachine
I love how the dream machine shits the bed all the time and how they push beta firmware to the customer :D
I've worked in Fortune 500 networking since 2000. Had CCNA three times lol, my Lord what a list of certs!
It's staggering, how much money Cisco used to make, and how many jobs were involved, how much time and meetings and headaches getting set up (site-to-site VPNs), all the human effort that was wrapped up in what this box just *does*.
The way for folks with the skillset to be able to configure this thing to add value is exactly what you said. Here is my new side gig and who knows. We need to preach the gospel of VLANs in the home until in the future people would think you were nuts to let your kids' friends on your family network. Or your IoT devices. Or any other devices on your home office net.
Love the enthusiasm Chuck! Great video!
Thank you, just started to search for a solution to my old setup. I’m getting one as soon as they come available
Really... dad jokes... “I like French press, it’s my daily grind” wah wah wah.

This looks like an amazing product! I’m looking at getting a switch and the APs for my house would this be a recommended router for these or would I need a more pro router?
Replaced a UniFi USG with a UDM this morning. Set up was really quick and easy. Reminded me of eero. But, the Dream Machine is a lot of bang for the buck! Have a few questions about adopting the previous "Network". I'm going to rewatch the video again for additional instruction.
The IPS feature with 850 Megs of throughput 🔥
#dreammachine
I've been shopping around for a new router! Thanks for the advice I might go buy one of these if I don't win. Im definitely into the faster speeds with iDS turned on #dreammachine
Loved the video!! We have a lot in common with geeking out on networks so I’m going to look into CBT. I actually have a MSP Corp but my CTO (who knew the tech) didn’t want to pursue the MSP path. He’s an 8-5pm kinda guy. Thanks again for the awesomeness!
Loved this video man, i've watched twice
Chuck: “It’s a pill”
Prof. Farnsworth: “Good news, it’s a suppository.”
Thank god. For a second I thought I was gonna have to swallow that thing.
Lol
Great video Chuck. I've got into COMPTIA certifications and there is a lot to learn from your videos. Back in December I wanted to upgrade my home WIFI from N to the latest and I found out there is a lot of colors to choose from. I ended up with a combo router/modem dual 2.4ghz and 5ghz while I decide. But this not just looks amazing, is a home practice network kit to play around and learn all these features. #dreammachine seems to be the solution, compared to google mesh this has the tweaking possibility that very few mesh systems offer. Thanks for the review and all the knowledge you share!
Thank you for a superb review of this unique product. You provided easy to understand feedback that clarified some questions I had regarding this device. Nice touch including your daughters in the vid. I look forward to more of your network topic discussions. For me, the simplicity of set up, form factor and the inclusion of all those networking components in one package make this a remarkable router package. I am looking to upgrade from an Apple Airport Extreme and an airport express extender. Amplifi's Alien mesh system is also very appealing due its features and simplicity. Tough choice.
Thanks Stephen! The Amplifi stuff is great for home. UniFi is more for enthusiasts who want to tinker a bit.
@@NetworkChuck are they still safe to use after they were compromised?
Love your conversational presentation style.. very informative. Keep it up.

Love the design and the UI interface for the product!
#DreamMachine I love the overall design of the dream machine, while being in such a small package, and packing all of that power at once.
Great video! Camera work is perfect!
I've had mine since beta and love it!
Aside from the other features, I'd say the feature that sticks out to me the most is the filtering for guests and overall control over allowed content. Not to mention that sleek terms of service agreement with that über professional looking splash screen (which is also customizable!). Those stood out to me the most!
#dreammachine
Spot on. Professional looking but at a price of actual professional kit.
I find it so funny your promoting this great geek router but assume "in most case" we are using a ISP provided cable modem vs our own LMAO! Great Vid #dreammachine
I started watching your videos about a week ago when i started thinking about upgrading my modem and router.
Now I have an Amazon shopping list labeled "network upgrades". I have my eyes set on having my whole network behind a VPN and setting up my own NAS. Your channel is dangerous my man.
When out I choose Nero coffee. At home I just love using our Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser. Just pluperfect.
#dreammachine
This thing is amazing! I really love the fact that is so smal and good looking. Most network components really should not be displayed in the living room but I would definitely place this one next to my television!
Watching your review made me want to buy a Dream machine, then I went and read the reviews on Amazon and it had the exact opposite effect. How do you explain the stark difference in user reviews on amazon vs yours? Are you being paid to do this?
As someone that is working in IT and studying for my Network + exam, I must say, I totally subbed to you because of this one video. Love the vibes you give out from what I can see so far. Keep doing what you are doing!
Fabulous video Chuck, I am a retired Network specialist and i always come back to your channel for updates and new info, i also just installed a new UDM in my home love it
I love everything about it, but most of all I would love to be able to limit the online gaming for my kids...

When I go on holiday, I like to take my wife-i with me!
I have learnt so much watching your channel. Thank you 🙏
Man I just found your channel and it's awesome, really liked this review/tutorial but any chance you could do a comparison video between the Dream Machine and the Amplifi Alian Router, PLEEEAAASE? Keep up the awesome work!
This was super helpful. Thank you.
Awesome video! Liked & Subscribed.
I've been through multiple routers, and mesh networks in 4 years and I'm someone who is generally never satisfied with subpar performance, I'm always trying to make my network better. I'm using and AmplifiHD mesh set up currently, and if one thing is for certain, Ubiquiti really makes great products.
I'm leaving my house now to go pick up a Dream Machine, and 2 mesh access points.
Thanks again for a great video, I'll be watching more on my new network setup soon!
Chuck thanks for the video. I've been looking for this for a while now I found one at the flea market and the guy wanted 200 bucks and now I'm loving this device
Your videos are great and very useful , you have a great voice for this kind of calm delivery , easy to listen to for longer periods of time
- I think the unit for me with be the "yet to be released "UDM-SE" , I think the UDM form factor with POE on the unit for adding Access Points and the LCD like the Alien unit will be the way to go
- Why do you think there has been pictures and model number floating around for so long without a product release ? and insight on timeline ?
- UI seems to have no WIFI-6 hardware , (Unifi 6 Lite rumored) , only on the Amplifi consumer side with Alien , but their Amplify seems to be under a Firmware crisis at the moment with performance, interoperability and stability issues all over the place... anything that needs to be rebooted more frequently than Environmental events like the occasional power glitch from the utility every 6 months or so is NOT ready for primetime use...)
- Do you think UDM-SE will be WIFI 6 and they are holding up for a FULL Product Line refresh to WIFI-6 ?
- Could you please make a video on how to share a printer across multiple VLANS , would be useful for Printer access from GUEST WIFI and then if I segment my home office traffic from Kid's traffic from "general traffic" but would like the easily share a printer across all VLANS. I have searched and no good videos on this and your delivery style would be a good way for me to learn this
And lastly , something we are all now dealing with now , IOT.... I run a completely separate WIFI IOT network , I come of my main ISP router into TWO network routers , one for Home and one for IOT , that way NO IOT traffic goes anywhere near my "Home" network.... BUT , if you could do a video on how I can setup a completely isolated VLAN/SSID for IOT devices using all the same HARDWARE as my Home network (planned to be UDM-SE when it comes out... and 4 to 6 extra AP's) , that would be a great setup that we all could benefit from , something WITH monitoring of the IOT traffic but without any threats if a IOT device was to go rouge....
I think some IOT security videos would be great for your channel and something much needed on youtube.
MANY thanks in advance,
Best regards,
Brad

been my go to for years.
I love the coffee from Aldi, they have their house brand called Barissimo. The French Roast is sooo underrated.
Fantastic device and great video!! Subscribed 👍
I purchased the USG yesterday, cancelled the order this morning and ordered the Dream Machine instead after watching this! This is literally what I was trying to piece together for my home network but instead it's all in one!
Lighthouse Roasters (in Seattle) Espresso Blend is my favorite and I use Aeropress

This year, I noticed Ubiquity released a thing they called Unify Dream Router. This is supposed to be Dream Machine's successor. But I have also noticed that Dream Router has fewer features than the Dream Machine. I will mostly focus on security, and support for multiple VLANs. It would be great to hear from this community different opinions on each of these products. Maybe a comparison video could be done. The one's I've seen on other channels is quite superficial with no in-depth information.
I am here because I was just looking at the two. I LOVED that the router has two POE ports in it, but it has some big issues. It is apparently loud, like the cooling system is loud... The bigger issue that can't do full 1Gbps speeds. The CPU in it is apparently trash and throttles to about 650Mbps, that is a deal breaker for me. Instead I just picked up a used Dream Machine and POE Switch.
Just get a dream machine and a Poe switch. You’ll have the best of both worlds.
Do these support a walled garden or portal where I could define fields required for logon & then parse those variables somewhere else?
Amazing video-thanks!!!!! No coffee, never had it.
Peter McKinnon mug and McKinnon’esc coffee pouring B-Roll 👌🏻
Loving the vids!
Hi Chuck! I just want to thank you for these amazing videos. The first video I saw got me started with Ansible and now this amazing UniFi product wow. By the way, we have a lot in common, I’m also a Network Engineer who lives in a two story house who loves French Press coffee 😂. Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
Awesome music and great reviews
Question, can I use this to manage cameras? I know it don't have a hard drive just wondered if it could be a unifi protect controller. Thanks!
Looking for upgrade my home network to make it more secure. I’ve always wanted to go with the UAG, cloud key, and add a AP or two. Two reasons I haven’t is cost of all products. 2. Parental controls. The dream machine seems amazing for the price. I love being able to glam things out in your network like guests or even security cameras. Could you let me know more about what it can do as far as parental controls? I like to filter my devices by MAC and then have the WiFi block devices by time of day, to keep kids from being up all night. Thanks. MikesArmy!
Thank you Network Chuck and Happy New Year.
The coffee pot we love and use exclusively is the Bodum Vacuum Coffee Maker. It offers the unfiltered taste the we both enjoy, but I think the secret is that the Water never contacts the grounds at boiling temp.
And....my organization uses AnyConnect, but site2site sounds much better. Pura Vida mi Amiga.
@2:38 what kind of backpack is that, do you still use it? or any other recs?
@ Network Chuck what type of unify AP can I add to the dream machine to have WiFi mesh.
I'm wondering, I too have gigabit Internet but I was never able to reach close to gigabit speed for my speedtest.
This product screams Awesomeness!!
I asked the IT guy at my job what he recommended for a wifi router and he said this piece of equipment. I think I am going to go with it after this demo.
When you let the dream machine auto select 2.4 or 5ghz does it do a good job? I have an Xfinity modem/router/ap with this option but it tends to select poorly (slow speeds)
Awesome opening scene! Sad, us tech guys have to sleep with our equipment ;-) !! Definitely a great unit!!
Hey I have the netgear rax120 which lack security I’m on a gigabyte connect which would you recommend udm or the pro

#DreamMachine - this thing checks all of the boxes! Such a simple design and so many great features packed in. Thanks for sharing Chuck!
Very good explanation. Good job.
hello given this is now a couple of years old,are there alternative recommendations for this product? or is this still the one to go for
Absolutely love your stile and content!! Tanks Chucky for supply geëgy entertainment for our net guys. From SA!!
Love the Ron Swanson shirt, great video!!
I searched for this very comment before making it myself. Lol.
The UDM and UDR only have 11 categories of threat management vs. 35 categories in the UDM-Pro/SE versions. Something to consider if you want the best protection.
I have the Amplihd - i have it running through my Watchguard T15..love ubiquiti products
Your enthousiasm made me buy a Dream Machine I never thought I would do that, but until now I don't have regrets. What an awesome device! Question: I would like to add video camera's to the Unifi network. I did some minor research and I think I need a POE switch to connect to my dream machine. However I want to connect a camera outside in the back yard as well. While my Dream machine is inside (about 15 metres away.) what do you suggest?
First @NetworkChuck I want to thank you for the education and quality of your work! It really shows you care about this stuff. I'm contemplating the Dreammachine vs something PF Sense and I think you have sold me on this one. #DreamMachine
Hi Chuck, I've been following your channel for quite some time. I love your content and style of sharing it. I am a 'noob' in all things networking but I would like to learn more about how to set up a powerful and secure home network. So, for users like me who have some 30-50 devices connected to their home network + smarthome + plex servers + PV systems connected to the house, what would be the best network topology you recommend? And most straight forward, too. Like what devices should I/we consider for about 10-20 wired clients and around 20 wireless clients?
What an amazing video! Well done sir. Excellent product for sure.
