"Black Hole" is right! I also started with just an access point and Edge Router.... then I had to get a Cloud Key Gen2+... Then the doorbell... then the USG.... then the PoE Switch... then the UDM-Pro... and now more cameras and more! Great video and very well put together!

I think I'm at the start of the hole guys. After upgrading to the latest internet package with my provider I lost two of the four Ethernet ports of the router to the ONT and 4G LTE backup device and I needed all four so I obviously need a switch now.
I keep watching your videos because you have this gift of explaining things so well and clear. I finished my home network early this year with cameras and APs and can't tell you how happy I am with it. Now I help family and friends build their networks since so many now work from home and need a good reliable internet. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your videos.

Perfect! I have a network like yours (no 10G switch though) and want to move from my Edge Router X (Which is a solid little device) to a Unifi Router to take full advantage of my Unifi AP's and the controler. I was leaning to the Dream Machine PRO or SE. After watching this, UDR it is. Thanks for a great video Samir!

The trade off of ditching the cloud key in favor of the UDR makes sense for me for the majority of my customers who don’t use UniFi cameras or the other suites. By saving money on the 1tb HDD in the cloud key and instead adding router/4 port switch, AP AND 2 Poe inserters is a huge no brainer while also being cheaper than a UDM.
If you have gig internet or above, a udm pro/SE is a better option
Most homes never need more than 2 APs unless the 3rd is dedicated for outdoor areas. I had a customer who insisted on 4 U6LR in a 6k square foot home and I had to set them all at low transmit power otherwise devices would never handoff from AP to AP (which were all installed as far away from each other as possible)

The UDR doesn’t have a Multi-Gig WAN port so can only support internet connections up to 700mbs, it does clearly state this on the specs.
Oh no! I guess I’m starting to go down the black hole! I have a router from my ISP running one ubiquity access point. I was having some issues with that so I was about to order a standalone, ubiquiti router and another standalone access point, but why bother with all that when you can get this thing with all that integrated in one device for about the same price. I went ahead and ordered one. Great video btw.
Thanks to your video today I have finally ordered this router to replace my old one. I am using Ubiquity products at work (UDM DreamMachine Pro & Amplifi Alien (this one is the sickest one I have ever seen) and love the way the look and operate.
Thank you very much for the detailed information! I have a question regarding forced disconnection: Is there a way to set the time period for automatic disconnection myself with UDR? I am a customer with 1&1 and need to renew my connection every 24 hours.

I am a bit disapointed, that the Dream Router hasn´t built in a modem ... so you have to use the shitty one from your provider. Is there any solution without getting to big an instantly getting a dream machine ?

Yup. That’s all there is to it. You do have to go into the controller to adopt the additional access points but that’s pretty much it.

Yup. You just have to use a browser on a computer to access it. Or you can use the UniFi app on a phone.
The UniFi doorbell has good video and the antennas are better than the competition, however the app sucks compared to ring and nest. No way to change the ringtone and it inherits the network name. They need a separate doorbell only app in addition to UniFi protect.
I’m definitely planning on trying it out. Will make a video when I do!
Does the UDR support the cameras?
100% envy your symmetrical internet connection. ISPs need to get their "stuff" together and get everybody better upload pipes...

I’m still sitting on my 10/1 mbps connection that performs more like 5/0.5 mbps. 😭
Might I add, I have a friend 1 MILE from me on the same road, and he gets 2Gb/2Gb into his home. 😭😭😭😭

Samir, thank you for your concise and easily understood explanations for us newbies. Very enjoyable. If someone was able to eventually buy a UDR, what would be the next Uiquiti purchase to allow 2.5 GBe networking between 4 computers to be connected with 6a cat and 2.5 GBe-capable NICs?
Thank you so much for checking out the video. As long as you have only 4 computers that need multi gig support, I recommend the Switch Flex XG. That one is actually a 10 gig switch but can obviously work with 2.5Gb. Any 2.5Gb specific UniFi currently has are actually part of their enterprise line and are significantly more expensive. So the Switch Flex XG is the best value for anyone looking for RJ45 multi gig solution.
I really wish these £200-£200 prosumer devices brought 2.5g to all wired ports these days. We've had gigabit 8 port switches for £30 for 10+ years now. Its beyond a joke. I know 10G was too big a jump fine. Then 5G kind of came around to cut the cost.. still nothing.. then 2.5G... still almost nothing. Surely an affordable UDR identical device with all 2.5G ports could be done at 300 quid. Home wired networking has really moved nowhere.

Hello, i have a question:
If i buy the UniFi Dream Router i can connect directly to it the cameras like the Camera G4 Pro without anything else? Or need to buy other tools?
I think the G4 pro might require POE with higher power than 802.11af. So you will likely need a POE switch. Also I don’t recommend using the UDR with anything other than maybe a doorbell with motion triggered recording since it can only expand storage with micro SD card which isn’t ideal for continuous recording.
I have a nether modem. I was looking into buying a unifi long range access point. would it be compatible with my nether modem?
UniFi access points are compatible with any router/modem as long as you have a way of providing power over Ethernet. Also you’d need to install the controller software on a computer within the network to setup your settings. I used to have two UniFi APs with an asus router before.
Are the lan ports on this thing 1GB? According to Amazon they’re only 600mb

The flex mini doesn’t have POE out. So you would technically need a POE injector to power the access point through the flex mini switch.

excellent video. I am interested in unifi but I have doubts, 1 I have to pay for having an account to configure my devices. 2 can i use a tp link switch with the unifi devices?
For UniFi, you don’t have to pay for your account. And yes you can use a tp link switch with UniFi devices. But if it’s a managed switch, you won’t be able to manage it using the UniFi console.

Thanks for the info! What about the fan noise? I saw that many people were complaining about this.
Personally I haven’t noticed it because it’s located out of sight for me. But for people that want it out in the open (which they should), I can see it being a problem if their ambient temperature is on the higher end.
Does it support dual WAN and if I were to upgrade down the line to the UDM pro can I use this dream machine as an AP?
The UDR actually does not have dual WAN. Only one WAN port. As for using it as an AP only, based on what I’ve read online, you can but it will require you to disable some of the router features like DHCP and stuff. I personally haven’t tried it but you may want to check the forums online to see if others have done it.

can the UDR run a wireguard server like the UDM?
I actually upgraded to an UDM-SE a while ago. But according to the internet, the UDR does have Wireguard. But I can’t speak for the performance since it appeared to struggle with general internet speed once I upgraded my connection to a 1 gig connection.
Awesome video and explanation. Do you know when some more will be available? Also my son gave me his old cloud key gen 2. If I have a dream router, can I also use the cloud key for my cameras since it has a 1TB drive? I think this would mean I would have two controllers.
I have no idea when they will be in stock again. I personally have not tried two controllers on the same network. I’m not sure if they can be merged. They may need to be kept isolated from each other in order for them to work.

It depends on your specific need. If internet throughput is your main concern then UDM will perform better. If you want POE ports and Wifi6 compatibility then UDR would be your choice but it will likely limit your internet throughput if your internet is faster than 500mbps
Are udm and udr have clodud key feature ? I want to controll my unifi device without controller i must install on pc or pi
Both have the network controller built in. You don’t need to install the network controller on a separate PC.
I got the UDR just recently, and was surprised to see my internet speeds cut in half. (I have gigabit fiber). Even after disabling packet inspection, since there is no hardware offload, my speeds are pretty much capped somewhere between 5-600mbps. This was extremely disappointing, as the device is advertised as a gigabit device, yet the wan speeds are lacking. (They have since updated the product page to say "internet speeds up to 700mbps") I'm generally very satisfied with Ubiquiti's unifi product line, but this was painful, as I know have to get the dream machine pro + an AP, which seems like overkill for my home setup.
Totally agree. That’s why I ended up switching to a UDM-SE when I upgraded to gigabit.

I personally recommend the SE because of the POE ports since you’ll likely be adding an access point anyways and you can just power it directly using the SE.
@@TechTalkwithSamir Yes, I do have 2 APs atm connected via the PoE ports on the UDR, so that will be useful for sure.
Can you tell me anything about the noise? Unfortunately I don't have a dedicated room for it, and it sits in my office. The UDR is quite noisy and fan speed varies a lot which is quite bothering for me. Is the SE any different?
For me the UDM-SE is in a network closet with other noisy equipment so it’s hard for me to gauge how loud it is. But it’s definitely not silent. And I suspect it’s likely louder than the UDM pro since it does have POE which tends to contribute to the heat quite a bit.
I was depressed when the UDR was perma out of stock then LUCKILY found out that Unifi parental control pretty much sucks (I am literally shocked btw) and so I quickly switched for a Synology router with amazing parental control

Returned a Synology after extremely poor range.
@@theknightofren I do not use it for the range. I got 2x xiaomi AX6000 covering my house and yard.. my laptops can do file transfers hitting 1.4 Gbps over wifi through that setup.
Synology's in there for the very easy to use parental control (lacking on unifi products)

@@theknightofren My setup is ISP fibre -> Synology -> XIaomi ax6000 Ground Floor -> Xiaomi ax6000 first floor
I use them purely as access points so all the router stuff is disabled.
I also use an ethernet cable between them vs using a wifi channel.
They have 2.5Gbps uplink and the mesh works seamlessly if I'm on a call going up or down the stairs.
Throughput is highest I've seen period and coverage like I said is good for about 600m2 area including walls
The only down side is the interface is in chinese. Workaround is to setup everything via a browser and have it be translated automatically.
Once the initial setup is done you don't need to go in there anymore so that's fine by me.
I also got I think 5 updates in the past year that I've had them.
I think I got them for $90 ish on ali express. Not sure how much they go for. You can also pair/mesh them with a cheaper ax3000 or ax1800 if needed
can you use a UDR and Cloud Key together?
I don’t think you can have two controllers on the same network. I dont think you can use the UDR just as an AP. I personally have not tried it.

The speed limits of your USG, is because you have the "small" one... Unify have a USG that can handle the higher ISP speeds with the intruder detection active. In other words, you got the wrong USG for your internet speeds, if you want the intruder detection.
Yup definitely. Keep in mind I got my USG years ago. At the time that was the only one they offered.
The USG Pro 4 has been on the market for MANY years ;)
It was likely cost prohibitive for me at the time. That’s likely why I didn’t even come across it at the time I got my USG.
Hi Samir, since u've experienced in unifi, I need your insight about my issue. I'm currently using USG 3P for several years and still up and running until recently my internet connection upgraded into 150 Mbps. With IDS/IPS enabled, the bandwidth only reach around 80 Mbps. Tried disable IDS/IPS and enable hardware offloading, can reach 150 Mbps, but something wrong with the DNS. External DNS can't be reach from user device... Nothing changed from firewall or rules.

It's frustrating how all reviews of this product failed to mention that it has built in noisy AF blower style fan that is always on at ~3000 RPM. There is a shit ton of posts on redit and UI forums from people who can't use UDR in they environment. I'm one of them. I wish I knew about the noisy fan before purchasing UDR :(
It depends on your noise floor in your environment. For me that’s something I didn’t even notice because mine was tucked in my network closet (where basically everything has a loud fan lol). But I do wish I had tested it in a quiet room for the purpose of this review.
Why are you still using your ISP router? You should be able to connect from ISP directly to Router. Saving $'s is always good.
Good question. I have my ISPs modem in bypass mode with wireless antenna turned off. My ISP actually doesn’t charge extra for equipment so won’t save money anyways. My ISP requires to have the modem to convert the incoming fiber to copper.
So, the title is misleading. THIS IS ALL YOU NEED but then you start saying: if you want IDS/IPS for 1 gb+ connection, it's not good. If you want PoE+ (at protocol), it doesn't support it and you NEED TO BUY a poe switch or injector. Yeah... "great" video.

This didn't age very well. UDR is woefully underpowered.
This device is a piece of garbage sorry to say but its the truth please don't buy it or invest in it instead go with some respected brand like Linksys to explain:
this device is up to 700 Mbps and this information is on the product page in the smallest font possible and the information that they don't mention that with the security features enabled 700 is impossible you'll be lucky if you got 500 if you really have the best cables and infrastructure just bought this device and I feel so deceived but luckly I was eligible for return on amazon so I did and I thought someone has to say that publicly in here, My old router is pretty old model from Linksys not the latest and a fraction the price of this device and I get 850+ Mbps with firewall running and port forwarding and custom DNS routing so if you care about your money I think better off and get a linksys I'm willing to upgrade to the new vlop they have that supports WIFI6 and all the bells and whistles
