Hugh! That cheat pie looked lots like the dog's breakfast, to use the British vernacular. Thank you for standing for quality, which in truth involves very little extra effort and pays dividends if flavor and nutrition. Blessings ChefMike

Shepherds (and Cottage) pie is one of my favourite things in the world. So it says much when I say you would struggle to pay me to eat the canned one, but the old rough-cut proper one I'd like a bowl of this instant.

A recipe is like a map, and as the great maxim has it, “The map is not the territory.” Good or bad the recipe is, the cook determines how it turns out. And right here, Hugh displays his skill by turning the cheaty pie almost as good as his family's own.

Sweet meat (one in a can) yuk... never. I used to eat wonderful pies at the pub next door in Grittleton in Wiltshire when my husband worked in Wooten Basset and we stayed in Grittleton, they were similar to one you were making but had melted cheese on top. Loved Triple X beer with them

The thought of canned meats in general makes my stomach turn ( yuck). Asides from that, great recipe Hugh. May I make some recommendations? This is what I do for my family. With the onions I add in an equal amount of bell pepper ( mostly red and green) and about half the amount of chopped ( diced) carrot. Then I add in some Italian seasoning, cayenne, salt, pepper, tomato paste (1 hefty tbsp) and about 2 tsp of sugar. I cook that until the tomato paste turns a rusty red color. After, I add in about a tbsp or two of flour. I cook it until the flour is absorbed. I add the meat back, and peas then add in about 1or 2 cups of stock ( beef or chicken) and then cook until gravy like. Then add about 2 tbsp. of Worcester sauce. Ok now that's done lol. As for potatoes, I would roast some garlic in the warm oven, then I would squeeze that into the potatoes ( with butter and milk). Add all that sexiness on top of the meat/ veggie mix and then put it in the oven. this is just a few recommendations. Hope this helps, thanks for the vid! Can't wait for more :)

I doubt when Shepherds Pie was first made they had bell peppers or cayenne. However, each to their own.

Sounds like Hugh's mum was a lot like mine: shepherds pie was a way of using up the Sunday leftovers. Back when I was growing up, I suspect my mother had never heard of bell peppers, but all the veg were out of our large garden anyway.

You should add some oil on the top along with some drips of water. I believe that would negate the buring

Aw Hugh, this is a bit unfair. Delia's recipe was taken from her book 'How to Cheat at Cooking' which she wrote for people who don't have time or energy to cook in the evening when they came home from work. I'm sure everyone, including Delia, knows that cooking fresh ingredients from scratch is always best. Knew you'd win anyway. Never mind I'm still a fan. :-)

Agreed. Delia was never claiming her recipe is better than from scratch, so a bit of a pointless exercise.

I really don't want to make a joke about this, but the extreme irony in the hands raised between the groups makes this too easy to joke about.
It saddens me how easy it is to joke about too, let alone the stereotypical reaction to it.
Watch closely on the people raising their hands, it is very sad.

And you can guarentee that the meals they had at school and at home had something to do with it. I bought some pre-made waffles the other day and the list of ingredients astounded me!!! I really wish that I had to time to make everything from scratch, I am sure that it would taste better too.

There really shouldn't be anything wrong with Canned meat, it always looks great when Americans pressure can it at home but the commercially available stuff is always low quality and messed about with :(
