DIY Paramotor Headset build - Bluetooth & UHF Radio Integration

  • In this episode of my 'One Man Workshop' series, I show you how I integrated a cheap Amazon Bluetooth motorcycle intercom into my Peltor ear defenders. I also use the opportunity to fit another intercom system, so I can use my UHF radio whilst I'm in flight too. This uses a DIY interface cable with a PTT (Push To Talk) button mounted in my ear cup for easy use.
    This is not aimed to be a tutorial, but more of a video to inspire you on how you can build one for your self, with a little bit of knowledge and time.
    I had a budget of £150 to design and fabricate everything I needed. I completed my build for around £110.
    You can buy off the shelf audio systems designed for Paramotoring, however they are all out of my budget so I took on the challenge of making my own that should last me many, many flying seasons.
    Sit back, relax and check out what I have created.
    I hope you get inspire to have a go and many thanks for watching!

    FN amazing! I was looking into building one for my ultra-light. Looked everywhere for the type of connector (mini xlr) to be able to remove the cable on my full face helmet for when I ride a snowmobile or a motorcycle. The quality of your video, editing, information etc is just speechless. Thanks for sharing! 1000’s of likes 👍🏻✌🏻

    I've made a similar headset this weekend but with a cloth aviator cap as I'm an ultralight pilot. The cap was modelled around a medical anatomy bust! All the wiring is on the headset and the cap is just to stop the Peltor X5 ear defenders blowing off my head.

    Could someone please explain to me why it is necessary to use additional mics and speakers? Why can't you use one mic and one set of speakers and route them to two devices (Radio and BT-Module)? Are their resistance/impedace too far apart from each other? Thank you in advance!

    Nice build, but I'm curious with all that limited space for the foam, how much db are they really dampening after replacing so much foam with electronics and wiring?

    • @clippedwing-bensmith1614
      @clippedwing-bensmith1614  4 года назад

      Hello Mike! Thanks for watching! Not that I have any scientific data to go off, I honestly can't tell the difference. I would say that 90% of the foam went back in. The foam did not completely fill the cups to start with, it was only filled around the out side. It would be foolish of me to assume that I still have the same level of ear protection as I have drilled lots of holes in them. I am however satisfied that the level of protection is sufficient though as I have tried to block off as much as I can.
      I will have a look into seeing if there is a way of testing these out as you have raised a very valid point!
      I guess I could try and get a loud small buzzer of some sort and record the dB level. I would then have to put it in my ear cup and seal it and then record it from the outside.
      Good food for thought! I will look into it! Thanks for a great question!

    • @clippedwing-bensmith1614
      @clippedwing-bensmith1614  4 года назад

      Also just thinking, I will try and log the dB level of the speakers. Its a bit of a strange one as I have designed the cups to block out as much external sound (mainly the engine noise) but then replacing it with speakers (a sound source) that is even closer to my ears!

    • @harry-knight
      @harry-knight 4 года назад +1

      I think the ideal set-up would be to have the ANC mic inside the earcup, so it's only cancelling the sound that makes it through the passive sound insulation.
