I rode for about 30 years with music or comms or the like and I was under the impression that I wouldn't be able to hear traffic etc. I was mistaken. I have found that it is possible to listen to music and still hear what's happening provided you set the levels sensibly. Note. I also wear ear plugs and can still hear both the music and the traffic without a problem. I started about 12 years ago just with Bluetooth for the GPS and found that there wasn't a problem, so I started listening to music on long trips, again, there wasn't a problem. So now I listen to the radio on the bike. I think that, with everything in life, if you use common sense, _most_ things can be done safely and correctly. Now that I've seen your video, I'll look into them and decide if they'll do the job for me.
THIS. IS. GENIUS. Been looking for something to use instead of having to stick something on the outside of the helmet and earphones falling out my ears. I have a pair of the Shoks in my draw that i havent used in a while and never thought of using them for this purpose. Just tried them with my helmet on and its a revelation. 🎉
The Aftershokz are superb so long as the batteries don't give out, which mine did after a year therefore became useless. While they worked though, it was wonderful having a sound system that didn't require anything to be shoved into/ onto my ears and was waterproof. Mine were IP68, which meant I could shower, bathe, swim, kayak, run/ walk in rain and ride my motorcycle in all types of weather without fear of damaging them. One thing I can't stress enough though, the sound of the wind in your helmet WILL damage your ears without protection. If you like hearing aids, then by all means. If not, then use ear plugs.
@@judge831 I know plenty of motorcycle riders who have tinnitus and/ or hearing loss from not wearing ear protection while riding. Even if it's quiet for you, the wind creates a pressure differential that flexes your eardrums constantly. Trust me, NOT worth the risk.
I switched between different kinds of headphone and finally stopped with Bluetooth communicator. I found that button control on the communicator is a must so I don't have to use my phone to stop the music when I want to focus on the surroundings.
I use Shure in ear monitors with a custom built wiring harness that plugs into the back of my Cardo instead of the provided in helmet speakers. They seal the ear canal to block out wind/ambient noise which allows me to run the volume low enough to enjoy the music but still hear what's going on around me. To get around the issues with putting your helmet on over any kind of ear phone get a moisture wicking helmet liner/beanie. Not only will it help keep you cool but your helmet will slide on nice and easy right over your headphones. Helps when removing as well. All that being said, if you want to hear the nurse who's spoon feeding you bananas when you're in your 90's you should always be using something that seals your ear canal.
i had some se425, unfortunately mine were lost or stolen. Trying to explain to people that the sound quality at low volumes it far superior than any bluetooth headset is impossible. I loves them but can't justify spending that sort of money on them again, i have some fakes that are nearly as good but i bought the shure foam plugs. Being wired can be a pain but only an audiophile will appreciate them. Kudo's to you for respecting your hearing in the future
I use Plugfones Basic connected directly to my phone or to a Bluetooth receiver. They block both road noise and I can play music at a lower volume. Very comfortable once you figure out the best depth to place them inside your ear. 🙂🙂🙂
I bought them year ago and I'm finally able to listen to music while working in the factory using earplugs. Best earphones I've ever had. Not so good on the bicycle because traffic and wind can be loud too and to hear the music clearly you'd need to go very loud
An alternative to this set-up for me was using an open ear earphones like the bose open ultra. It has a simillar experience in terms of hearing your surrounding and good sound quality overall. You dont have to worry about wires since they are completely wireless.
As I have both an intercom and the aftershokz I wont try them under a helmet. I really need buttons to control the audio and incoming calls as I try to leave my phone in the pocket as much as possible and not on my phonemount. But for daily "normal" use the aftershokz are perfect. the soundquality is good enough and they are so convinient that I happily sacrifice a bit of soundquality.
As long as the music is not at max you can still easily hear your surroundings. Earbuds that passively block out some (not all) of the road noises are safer for your hearing in the long run. Really hard to hear traffic noises when your deaf, protect your ears on your rides.
Safety depends a lot on the music you are listening to. Humans are actually completely incapable of multi-tasking. Like at all, nobody can perform true multi-tasking. Nobody. What we do is serial tasking which is rapidly switching between tasks and decreases the attention we can give to all of them and makes us more prone to errors. Listening to music may not seem like a 'task' but it occupies the brain the same as one. Especially music with lyrics and very especially rap.
I programmed a bone conductive watch-like mobile phone prototype in high school for an IT contest. To hear the call you had to press your index finger to your cheekbone and talk to your wrist. That was about 20 years ago. I thought that technology died.
I use these (Open Run Pro) daily for business calls and music. I like them. I've not used them while riding yet, and I probably won't. Not for music anyway. But they come in handy if I get a call on the bike. I can pull over to a safe spot and take the call. The caller can hear my Harley or the wind noise, so it is essential to stop and switch the bike off. If I wear my Shoei full-face helmet, I remove these and use my Sena. But all in all, they are great. They don't hurt my ears like in the ear head phones do, and I sometimes forget they are on my head.
I ride with music sometimes, but I have Cardo Packtalk unit. You have to install small speakers in helmet, but you can also hear outside noise as well. Another benefit is that you can also make and receive phone calls while riding. Headphones or earbuds inside a helmet is a no go for me.
I have a pair of these that i, like you, got for riding my road bike (bicycle). I also use them while shopping, working around the house and even pair them to my old laptop (which is plugged into the tv via hdmi - don't have a smart tv) so i can watch movies at night without waking my missus or my daughter up. I'm getting back into riding soon and had been thinking about getting an intercom system. It occurred to me a few weeks back that using these might work, so i grabbed my old helmet and tried it out. It would be interesting to see what the audio is like when making a phone call (whether they can hear you or just hear the microphone rubbing against the padding). I'll probably use these to start with and then might upgrade to a proper system. I won't be riding with anyone so don't need the intercom aspect, just for bluetooth audio.
I find ridding with earplugs ( for noise isolation) help me with distinguishing sound direction. When I ride without plugs, the noises are scattered which is just distracting and fatiguing. I often resort to using in-ear headphones (wired) so I can listen to the radio. The wireless ones are just too big and fall out when putting on the helmet (and definitely when taking it off). This would solve my current predicament :D
I have a Cardo with custom moulded ear plugs with speakers built in. Cuts out wind noise and provide clear quality audio. I can control volume and music with Cardo unit. I find cycling with Open Move Aftershocks and find wind noise overpowers bone conduction.
I've been riding with noise blocking earbuds for 15 years now. Nowadays there are plenty that are freaking cheap ($150) that work adequately for listening while riding. They are earplugs with speakers in the back so they still cut out the harmful wind noise and allow me to listen to music at a reasonable volume instead of blasting my ear drums with stupid-loud music _plus_ wind and other noises.
I have really narrow ear canals & find normal earbuds really painful to wear, especially under my bike helmet. Looking at these as an alternative, thank you!
I love my shoks, I love them so much I own two of them and have had five total. But I have some problems with them, with and without a helmet on. #1 The pressure points explode when your helmet is on for more then 1 hour. #2 the charger cable is proprietary, but there are companies that sell extra cables #3 if you drop them off your head sometimes the speaker inside can become loss and rattle Other than that they are amazing headphones and make life way easier
I’ve tried apple earphones , cardio, and now these. I liked the apple ones but they fall with some of my helmets. These option worked great but I don’t like how they move or fall with most of my helmets either. While they gave me better sound because I wear earplugs all the time, having to catch them or removing my helmet to readjust them, I didn’t like. So, I ended up just getting cardio mounts for all my helmets even wnen the volume of music is not good because of the earplugs. The funny thing is that I still hear the traffic around me despite the plugs and music, contrary to what almost everyone says.
I know an extra trick while putting these on! Pretty funny seeing you stick your fingers all in your helmet like I do all the time haha. I use these headphone all the time while I ride, it’s so nice for some quiet tunes and hear everything still. As you’re pulling your helmet down over your head using your fingers, take your thumbs to push up on sides of the headphones. Kind of like imagine your fingers and thumbs like you are biting an imaginary cheeseburger
Only solution I have found for that is making a group call through discord or similar platforms. That way you’re not limited to range between riders as long as you have cell connection.
I saw a pair of these the other day and wondered how well they would work. My thoughts were they’d play music and not cancel outside noise. Thanks for the vid and your thoughts! I’m gonna give them a shot.
I have a deep dark fear that, if I were to get a set like this, that a cheap Chinese battery might suddenly explode on the motorway, and I'd be zooming along at 80mph with the side of my head being cooked or have the shrapnel going into my skull! I tend to stick to the headsets where the battery hangs down on a cord for this reason
I have a different pair but similar and I have been using them for months. They are awesome. Thank you for letting me know of this other brand in case I lose mine.
Emm.. It not looks to comfortable for long trip. I think it's much better to use intercom, like Sena, Cardo or something cheaper. No need to search for "special helmet wearing". Just put it on, and go. Other thing is that You can ride and talk with Your friends if they are using any intercom via bluetooth.
I wear mine whenever I go out on my mountain bike, and road cycle, but haven't tried them on the motorbike yet. I guess no amount of music is as good as that crossplane R1 tune 😎
Sounds very interesting. However. For the sake of references" could you make some comparison to other known (or popular) helmet head sets? I use different sets of Sena's and I am often desapointed by the low frequencies they produce.
Got the “mini” version (but not the pro) for a tighter fit inside my helmet at Sam’s Club at what I think is a good price. But if I was going to use them with earplugs o would’ve just stuck with earbuds. 😂
I have been using etymotics with dual flange tips...they offer roughly the same noise suppression as earplugs, so I can hear the ambient sounds granted I keep the volume at a lower level
What a coincidence! I just came back from my 3rd ride on the bike and was wondering the exact same thing - if my Aftershokz could be used while biking as I had no luck getting airpods to fit under the lid. Will have to try this out soon!
Interesting....I wonder how this would work for people with a lot of hair. I work from my bike, so my question would be how effect the microphone would be with these under a helmet/at speed (yes, it is helpful for ME to be able to take/make calls while riding).
I wanted their first gen of these but was cash strapped. Was gifted ear buds and forgot about these. Now I want them and knowing the 8th gen would have improvements I avoid the "I had these and..." preconceptions.
It's strange maybe but I could not listen to music on my bike, in fact I don't even like to wear ear plugs. To me, hearing traffic, the engine, and even the wind is a vital part of riding. My main riding friend, on the other hand, always wears ear pods and listens to music constantly, which is highly annoying when we pull up and I say something to him about the route or something or we passed for a minute or more while he fannies about with wires and buttons and says, "what did you say?". What I do think is a possible breakthrough are these units that make the helmet shell transfer music and or intercom to the rider. Does away with awkward earphones in one stroke.
Wish this would work for me but I find it allmost impossible to get them on correcty (had a pair already for running), and if they're not on right the hurt like hell! Also, taking them off is painful too. Might not help that I wear glasses.
Great review but…..a possibly game changing omission is the ability to deal with telephone business when riding. Even the cheapo (not Shokz) bone phones have microphones which work fine under a helmet. It’s a little sketchy but the multi function button (answers ringing phone) is located so a shove on the side of your helmet pushes it. Bonus non-Riding related plus…Bluetooth them to your television for the next Moto GP. Incredible.
The Shokz Opencomm are pretty awesome for then bike paired with Google assistant. I use it for work and on the bike with earplugs. Which make up for the low volume but is way more comfortable than earbuds. I want to do phone calls etc. And you can get make calls hands free. It's not perfect but it does work. Getting the helmet on and off is a pain.
3:28 Easily number one reason IEMS are way better. You can get open back design, or whatever else they are calling them these days, that allow you to hear the outside world just fine. Provided you listen at reasonable levels.
How is the volume? I have tried two different comms sets, and both work fine for music, but for podcasts and audiobooks I have the volume all the way up, but it's just loud enough to be annoying. It's like listening to an ASMR, except not being able to understand distinct words defeats the purpose
I have a pair and find it useful making calls, have you tried making a call with the helmet on, and whether the person on the other end of the line can hear you okay whilst riding?
I still prefer to ride with my sena for music I learnt years ago the hassle of putting a helmet on just isn’t worth it. Also having a wire tied to a phone even in a jacket pocket in a crash isn’t a nice feeling.
I’ve owned a cheap pair of bone conduction. Now I have good pair of aftershock’s (the ones you got too in the video, don’t remember the model name). Great solution to listen to music. Obviously I’ve got a great pair of noise isolating headset and earphone too. Depends of situation to situation. Now you made super curious about trying them with the motorcycle helmet
Have any of you used bone conduction headphones with a half or 3/4 helmet on a motorcycle? I have multiple helmets, full, modular, 3/4, and half helmets...just wondering how well they will work with an open style helmet?
It resonates the side against the Tragus. It's not similar to a speaker that has open end. More like hearing the music from 2 cars with the windows up but you're outside between them. It's there but not blasted in your ear.
My Cardo Paktalk Slim is not situated right on my ears (I use an HJC Helmet with pre-done speaker placement) and I can't hear music very well over the revving of engine (Honda Shadow 1100, 1997) and so I'm wondering.. The most important question, the most relevant question, is... How do they sound with a Helmet on? Are they loud since they're going through bone or????
I have been using these everyday for over a year in my motorbike helmet. I have a modular helmet so it's easier to get them to stay in place when taking my helmet on and off. It took a few days for the helmets padding to shape a new groove to allow these to comfortably fit but they are absolutely amazing. I've even answered the phone a few times and it's worked fine. I highly recommend these even if you don't end up using them with your motorcycle. Best headphones I've ever bought in terms of convenience!
What is the speed the can hold on to? Man headphones handle it to 50km/h but when you drive faster the wind noises and road are lots der then the music. So would e nice to wich speed they are good for.
Interesting, I already have some of these, never even considered using them on my motorbike, although I prefer not to have music while I ride, enough distractions to look out for.
In fact, I don't think ear-hanging Bone conduction headphones are suitable for Motorbikes, because it is difficult for you to wear a helmet after you wear headphones. Of course, Bone conduction headphones are still very practical. It is important to choose a powerful headphone that can use multiple scenes. For example, the Wissonly Hi Runner I am using myself, it can be used in scenarios such as running, walking, mountain climbing, swimming, fitness, online meetings, etc. It is truly my must have.
I prefer my headphones BONELESS. But this is quite interesting.

I use oppo encore as it has exposed buttons so that I wont have to fiddle with my phone while riding
I have a pair and find it useful making calls, have you tried making a call with the helmet on, and whether the person on the other end of the line can hear you okay whilst riding?
I’m hoping to pick them up for one of the things being a motorcycle riding. In ear does not fit the bill for me
why not attach them under your helmet padding? just add some velcro tape and it stays with your helmet instead while still being easy to remove
What about phonecalls while using the helmet??
People can hear me clearly? Because the microphone is not so close to the mouth...
Thanks!!
I'd rather be aware of my surroundings. Safety first.
Got some of those type of headphones going to try them on my speedmaster cool good advice.
i never really think about liking videos but this one needed a like for the mr bean reference
Thought of buying these from SHOKZ , still donno if it is worth 129 bucks.
I'm definitely considering getting these. I've heard of these before and they're quite interesting.
Hey I saw you were on the hartbeespoort dam wall I live here love the videos and can't wait to start riding.
How is about wearing glasses with these headphones?
Does it have a mic? If so, how does it perform in the helmet on the go?
Suprised you didn't slide them up behind the padding and had them come out the earphone speaker area's if your helmet has them.
What if we put it on with a half cut helmet,is it safe?i mean, will it drop?
Loved the Harley comment at the end!
The Mini fit closer to the back of the head
Have any of you used bone conduction headphones with a half or 3/4 helmet on a motorcycle? I have multiple helmets, full, modular, 3/4, and half helmets...just wondering how well they will work with an open style helmet?
The vibration should resonate in the helmet giving it a bit more sound.
It resonates the side against the Tragus. It's not similar to a speaker that has open end. More like hearing the music from 2 cars with the windows up but you're outside between them. It's there but not blasted in your ear.
The padding would absorb it plus they don't vibrate all that much.
how's the mic tho? planning to use this as my action cam's mic
I wonder how long you could wear this squeezed under a helmet for before it becomes uncomfortable - like on a road trip.
Great, have you also considered Sony Linkbuds ? ( the ones with hollow speakers )
Time to approach them about a rider-centric model with remote controls.
just curious , which roadbike and mtb do you have
What is the speed the can hold on to?
Man headphones handle it to 50km/h but when you drive faster the wind noises and road are lots der then the music.
So would e nice to wich speed they are good for.
Will they hurt if ur helmet is tight .
Interesting, I already have some of these, never even considered using them on my motorbike, although I prefer not to have music while I ride, enough distractions to look out for.
Do you have a Bluetooth intercom? How does the audio quality compare to that, or come to normal headphones?
In fact, I don't think ear-hanging Bone conduction headphones are suitable for Motorbikes, because it is difficult for you to wear a helmet after you wear headphones. Of course, Bone conduction headphones are still very practical. It is important to choose a powerful headphone that can use multiple scenes. For example, the Wissonly Hi Runner I am using myself, it can be used in scenarios such as running, walking, mountain climbing, swimming, fitness, online meetings, etc. It is truly my must have.
I wear hearing aids. Would this work for me?
The sound itself is different than of the normal headphones
Well I put one TWS on my left ear and everything sinc in. It's okay too. Not totally safe though🌝🌚
i use them in construction and work wonders
Rather have my Sena 30k in the helmet not playing full blast than haveing headphones on they hurt xd
