Allow me to add a 5th reason: safety. I was looking for earbuds that would stay in my ears after wasting money on expensive ones that hurt and popped out. Bone conduction headphones were what the folks at my local running store suggested, and after using them for a week I see why. I can listen to my music same as ever, they stay put no matter how much I sweat, and I can also hear other runners, bikes, cars, and animals coming from behind. I am sold! Thank you for explaining how this technology works.

I have nerve damage in one of my ears from a skull fracture ( wear your helmets when skateboarding kids!) Its left me with like 30% hearing in that one ear, I can hear but can't make out what is being said or where sound is coming from. Will these improve my hearing or will it just be a bunch of noise?

One of my pros: doesn't increase the heat in your ears as with the traditional closed-back headphones. I've experienced rapid ear wax buildup and I've heard that covered ears yield faster microbial growth.
Another pro Is that when I'm working with these on, I don't have to take them off to turn around and acknowledge another person or their conversation.

If you want the Bass experience - put the earplugs on. This simulates the noise cancellation of the typical earbuds but it negates the whole purpose of hearing what is happening around you which is annoying for me as a cyclist and is ultimately UNSAFE. I just bought a pair of Openmove by Aftershokz today and took it on a bike ride and absolutely loved it. No ear stress, fits perfectly in my helmet with sunglasses. I can listen to music and make calls and hear my Varia warn me of incoming vehicles from behind. Thumbs up totally !

Another advantage of bone conduction hearing devices is that they do not cover the ear (you already mentioned that part) but what you didn't mention is that it actually complies with traffic laws, for example, in Denmark you're not allowed to cycle with earphones on as it causes accidents when you can't quite hear the traffic around you. but with bone conduction, that's not a problem at all cause you're not covering the ear.

Really glad to hear this review from an audiologist! It is encouraging to hear that these are safe from a health standpoint. I am considering these for running--as a female I don't like to run without an awareness of my environment, but my runs are getting awfully boring. I have TMJ issues, so one of my concerns was the potential for the vibration to agitate my jaw. I had an ear tumor removed (vestibular schwannoma) thus I can only hear out of 1 ear so it was super helpful to know that bone conduction is not a magic pill that would allow hearing in my deaf ear. Bone conduction headsets are especially good for any situation in public where you want to be aware of your surroundings. You don't have the best sound quality, but can be aware of what's going on around you. I wear the Trekz Aftershokz headset for road cycling because in the ear headsets are dangerous. They block your hearing vehicle traffic. Because of that our cycling club disallows their use for our group rides. I would also recommend them for folks who run or walk on biking/walking paths. Nothing is more irritating than coming up behind a runner on a path and shouting "on your right" and having them not be able to hear you because their ears are plugged up with a headset. This would also be applicable for individuals walking around streets and traffic. A company called "Coros" has now also come out with this technology built into cycling helmets.

I work at a power plant and around very loud equipment so hours and hours of walking and taking logs gets so dull. I love audio books and podcasts and bone conduction headphones were an absolute perfect tool. I looked at headphone ear plug combinations but I didn’t want to just plug my ears and drown everything out because I do need to hear my surroundings and my radio. Also ear plug headphone combo’s have a lower decibel rating than actual ear plugs and I want to protect my hearing as much as possible. So it works perfectly because I can have my ear plugs in, I can hear my surroundings and radio and the bone conduction headphones work even better with ear plugs, especially when I just use it for spoken word media like books and podcasts

I saw an article earlier today for the aftershokz titanium, which I read up on and some reviews. After work I ran to a pharmacy that had a demo and I could not believe it but they worked. I've been using bone conduction for a few years now. I've had cheap corded headphones & I have owned all types of Bluetooth ones we well. Even purchased some ear bugs & I can tell you that bone conduction is the best. I can workout with them on, I work outside & they don't slide out of my ears due to sweat or ear wax. Plus I can have them on & still hear my surroundings. They suck for loud nosies like running the lawnmower but they should come with plugs to put in your ears to fix that issue.
Drawback: sound quality isn't that great compared to the ear buds or over the ear headphones but hey it's a small sacrifice to gain so much freedom & reliability.

Due to bluetooth it limits at 22KHz (due to 44.1KHz samplerate) after that i tried with piezoelectric sensor as speaker and i touch it next to my ears and i hear maximum at ~40KHz but it hurts and with spectrum analyzer i checked if theres harmonics etc but on the air (normal hearing) i hear at ~19KHz. I dont know if older ages can hear above 20KHz with bone conduction.

As a mailman, having the ability to enjoy music, audio books, podcasts and whatever else I enjoy listening to; while simultaneously able to hear people talk, dogs bark and car horns warning me of potential dangers is invaluable. Why three pairs. Well, aftershokz has the greatest product protection I've ever seen. I've had a pair have a bad ear piece, replaced. While waiting for the replacement show up, I buy another pair. Have two. Another snapped in two, well, sent it in for replacement and yes, I bought another set while waiting. Now, I have three. Best product, product service and company. They had sunglasses at one time, wish they had the option of glasses with replacement lenses, so I could put my prescription into the frames, then I'd have the perfect sysytem. But regardless, Aftershokz are by far the best earbuds I've ever had.

Great overview of the science and benefits of this tech. I just picked up a pair of AfterShokz Trekz Air's for running. They're my first pair of bone conducting headphones and, while they're relatively expensive when compared to alternatives (a lot more tbh), they're the most comfortable headphones I've worn while running. They don't require pushing them back in repeatedly once I start sweating, there's no cable hitting the back of my neck, and I can hear people and traffic. They're just great. I've been going around the internet praising bone conduction headphones now. heh. If the ones you wear to the gym are even mildly uncomfortable you should find somewhere to test the ones I have because I barely feel them at all. Though like you said, the sound quality is noticeably worse. Perhaps even worse in the Air's because they don't really compress much but I have no point of reference. Actually, I just noticed you're linking to the Titanium's! Now I'm really curious which you would prefer. Other reviewers that tried both said they prefer the Air's but someone on Amazon preferred the Titanium's. I don't really trust the other youtube reviews because they might just be trying to get conversions for the more expensive pair. You should ask AfterShokz for a pair to test.

As a hearing aid wearer...I have to say I love these. I can keep my hearing aids in and listen to my phone and computer. No taking one out to put another in! So glad I bought a pair. As for sound quality I find it is good for my needs which are audiobooks, meetings and music. My hearing loss is not a conduction loss so hearing of music is not improved with this device and if turned up loud the vibration from the bass is very annoying (even vertigo causing at times). But for my purposes I am so satisfied.

Bone conduction headphones can have varying degrees of water resistance or waterproof levels, so they could be quite durable for something so small to natural wear and tear over time from your sweat and moisture. This also means it's easy to wipe and wash with a cloth or alcohol wipe to sanitize it.

Thank you! Dr Clifford, for your professional video, I am a fan of Bone conduction headphones. I have used Wissonly Hi Runner and Shokz Openrun Pro, and they are both good. Let me add a few advantages of Bone conduction headphones. Their working princeple gives them the opportunity to obtain higher waterproof performance. Its appearance is unique, looks cool, and its non-in-ear wearing way makes it more hygienic. Of course, not all Bone conduction headphones have these advantages, such as waterproof grade, most of them are IPX5 or IPX6, and only a few have achieved IPX8, such as the aforementioned Wissonly Hi Runner

Hey Cliff, you should review the Nuraphone since it combines otoacoustic emission testing with consumer grade headphones to create a customized eq profile. Not just that but the actual sound delivery method is truly unique with the woofer outside of the ear and the tweeter in the canal (picture wearing air pods with headphones over them). As a BC-HID and general technology/computer geek I always recommend this headphone over any other hands down. I think a review would make for solid youtube content. Just make sure you film your reaction during initial setup when comparing flat to custom eq, and if you want that front row seat at a concert experience immersion level 4 is my sweet spot.

I got me a pair of BCH for Christmas and so far I like them they have poorer quality and can cause headaches from the pressure but with OEH I had severe earwax buildup because of the trapped heat like the earwax would be very soft and would clog up my ears but with BCH my ears can air out and stay clear. Also I used to use wired headphones so Bluetooth is still really cool to me also I can actually hear people

Thank you for your explanation. I'm thinking about getting a pair & am doing my research now.
My earbuds have left my ears ringing like crazy, at low volume.
My headphones hurt my ear carlidge. I have a bunch of video editing that I need to do, which requires headphones or such due to the environment. Even my small over the ear headphones have me irritated. I'm just not sure if the pressure of the bones would bother me too?
But I'm better educated on them now! 👂 🙉

One more reason is specifically targeted to swimming, it's a bit tricky sometimes to make a perfect seal between the ear and conventional earbuds when swimming. But with bone conduction headphones you don't have to deal with that

I just purchased the AFTERSHOKZ OPENCOMM bone conducting headphones and I LOVE IT!! I work 100% remote and am a trainer for a clinical software complany. What that means is I am on a Zoom training session for 6-7 hours a day. I needed to have headphones that not only produced good sound, but were also comfortable. The traditional headphones had iffy mics and my ears sweat at the end of the day. Plus I couldn't hear myself talk clearly and was always talking louder than I needed to. I tried wireless earbuds but after a full day of work my ears hurt. If I wore them for 2 work days in a row, my ear would swell up and become painful to the touch. The bone conducting headphones are a GodSend! I can hear clearly. People on my Zoom calls have said that I sound clear and now my ears are not hurting at all!! I am going to try these on my 83 year old father who has hearing issues to see if they help him as well! Dr. Cliff says that one of the "Cons" to wearing these type of headphones is the pressure you feel. I disagree. Once on, I forget they're there and being able to hear my surroundings and have a lightweight heaedphone is really amazing. I highly recommend!

I'm using these with an app as a BAHA’s AS due to the Covid19 situation stopping part 2 of my audiology assessment. This is no substitute for an audiology assessment but although you hear rustling sounds yoydnormaly filter out it's hugely improved the range of hearing. I can hear people talking behind me. It takes time to get used to filtering sound but if your Deaf aware and have understanding of limitations of hearing aids then they might be great. I'd say The headsets are comfy and you can forget you are wearing them.

The video that I am watching is 4 years old. I purchased a bone conduction headset that was a cheap knock off. It was under $40. They were pretty bad but it did let me know about the technology. So I went bigger in price. I purchased from Best Buy the SHOKZ Open Run Pro for $129.00.
WOW!!! The sound quality and performance is fabulous. Most of the time I don't even know I'm wearing them and have fallen asleep with them on. I work emergencies and wildland fires. It's wonderful that I can hear everything around me as well as who is on the phone or whatever Bluetooth device I am using. I ask people when on the phone do I sound clear at your end? They say yes it's clear. I hear them clear as well. If I turn them all the way up I can enjoy the stereo music. If I want to enhance the sound I use foam earplugs as well. Great if you're flying. If there is just too much interference from what's going on around me I will use one plug only to applify 1 ear. I am able to hear clearly out of the other. Battery life is long. There are times when I am working that I do not have access to an Electrical plug. So I went back to Best Buy and purchased 2 more. I consider this one of the best investments I have made. I find myself asking people constantly if they understand or know about bone conduction headsets. If they say no I will ask them if they would like to know what they are. I let them know. I do the same when I see people with the phone to their ear or on speaker yelling at the phone, I find a way to approach them, inform them and show them what bone conduction headsets are. Not one person has been negative about this information being passed on to them. The SHOKZ Open Run Pro have received several high praises by people who have tried them. The future is here now.

I have hearing loss in cochlear nerve damage. Without plugging the ear canal with a plug or wearing yourhearing aids aids. For sounds to loud enough to hear. I am exploring ways to connect to my work phone via Bluetooth adapter. I find one on Amazon for $40. Hope my explains why some of you can’t hear much. By covering your ear canal will increase loudness as sound don’t escape out of your ear.

Hi, I would like to know if bone conduction headphones could reproduce well the upper part of the spectrum (5khz to let's say 16khz...). This is because I am trying to reproduce binaural sound and HRTF are badly affected by these ear canal resonances when using air conduction headphones and I don't see yet any other solution to circumvent this problem. Thank you !
