I'll never forget that siren or the "moving conveyor, please watch your step" from the Ultra Twister.

That siren was every part of AstroWorld. You could hear it from most anywhere in the park.

Aww the memories. We used to put a penny on our knees and watch it float. Sure miss this park. Sad it's now a dirt parking lot only used during the Houston rodeo as an extra parking lot. It's amazing how the park was quickly bull dozed and now is completely flat.thank you for these videos of astroworld.

Aww! I haven't heard that siren in years! So many memories from when I was ten, and placed a penny on my knee and watched it float up! It was so hilarious! Thank you for these memories Astroworld.

If anything, the one thing I'll always remember of this ride (which is how it pretty much stood out among the other Intamin drop towers of its time) is the siren that would sound just before the drop. I believe that sound would later be resurrected on the "Serial Thriller" roller coaster and would sound when they dispatched the train.

Great video! But, AstroWorld actually had 2nd generation Intamin Freefall developed by now defunct Giovanolla. "Ours" was more reliable than gen 1. SFoTexas had gen gen 1 which was always breaking down. SFoTexas actually visited our park to find out why we had a lower "down time" *A side operational note* the safety check list included "water supply is on" as these brakes were water cooled. If you look on the gondola, there was a warning DO NOT TOUCH. This was to keep riders from touching the exposed brake fins while loading. If the guests asks us "why the warning?" We'd simple get a paper cup of water from our water cooler and throw it on the hot brake fin which would "flash boil" into steam!!!!! Point was WELL taken!

That's wild! Wouldn't the shock damage the fins though?

Miss All these 1st Gen Free Fall Drop Tower rides. The feeling of weightlessness in your stomach was unlike anything else.
My Home Park is SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN, and SIX FLAGS GREAT AMERICA when I lived in Chicago,IL for the last 31 years. However, I'm back In Southern Cal so Magic Mountain IA again my Park.
Our Drop ride was called 'FREE FALL'. It was at the Back End of the Park, it's been gone since the 2008 season.
Thankfully we have LEX LUTHOR Drop Of Doom which is the 2nd Highest Drop Tower Ride in the World at 400 feet, and behind Zumanjaro at GREAT ADVENTURE 415 feet.
But I really miss the feeling of being on your back at rides End.
Thanks for Sharing. So Sweet. 😎👍

They had a similar ride at Six Flags over Georgia that I loved. The mechanics of the ride intrigued me.

There was something about those first generation free-falls that the newer ones just don't have. I think it was hitting the bottom and that slope and "landing strip". I miss those.

I remember that drop ride. Everytime I got on it I would say following words: "Here we go!" when it would go up. "Ready!" before we drop. And "WHOA!" or holler as the ride dropped. Sometimes my groin would hurt after the drop. Risk but fun ride.

Thanks so much for those memories! I used to work right behind the ride, at the Birds of Prey show and heard that siren so much I learned to tune it out. How instantly I was transported to those times!

I could still stand up with the bar down my first time. I was 7 years old. Cried cuz i was scared and then immediately rode it again. 60 second ride with a jet engine or something. Never rode it a single without a dime on my knee.

This was one my favorite rides…I’d love it when we would go on a weekday and the park would not be crowded at all - so nobody in line and we’d get to ride it over and over.

Thanks for uploading another nice retro video from Anton's collection Steve! I think it's quite interesting how this Intamin Freefall ride had a siren installed to tell riders when they were going to drop. I guess it added to the overall ride intensity. ;-) I might ride Demon Drop at Dorney Park when I go this summer but, I'm not too sure because these Intamin Freefall rides are quite old and rickety looking. Also, the restraints look like they could just come open during freefall. But, I guess that's just the impression I get considering I've never actually heard about the restraints popping open on these exact models. I guess I'm just used to newer models like Drop Tower at Canada's Wonderland. But, I do enjoy many older rides. Once again, nice video of Sky Screamer at AstroWorld. :-)
