I was blessed with tickets 3xs to see Petra during my teenage years, what I will remember always remember is the alter calls and how the Holy Spirit moved on the hearts of so many . They had counselors, pastor's, Sunday school teachers from area churches ready to help people. They themselves were helping people, it was so beautiful. In those concerts many people called upon the Lord as savior. Those were the 3 best new years eve's I've ever had. They eat share verses and it was just awesome.. Then we'd rock 😁
I've been listening to rock music by the greatest guitar players for 42 years. I still haven't heard any guitar solo with quite as much "stank" as 2:57 - 3:18. That high note is sonic perfection.

You know, I just revisited this song. This time I am truly hearing the depth of these lyrics. Amazing. The words hit me deeply during this season of my life. Funny. I don’t even hear the music as I had always focused on. When our acts are self-indulged led, it must be “just like Judas’s kiss.” Wow! So so true for this 40 year old Believer.😔
When I first heard this song in 1999, I was stupefied, it was strange, dark, with a medieval, renaissance, strange, but at the same time powerful, and with wonderful lyrics, and I do not know why it could not stop to listen to it again and again. His guitar riff, that background harmonium, transported me to another side, and it turned out to be a dark song that led me to think about what the lyrics finally said, the betrayal, the disillusionment, "I wonder how ...". the many great songs of Petra without doubts.
I prayed and asked the Lord what are they saying at the beginning of the song? My new tape and cassette player flipped the song and I heard "why are you searching for satan when you should be searching for the Lord!! " I broke down and cried!! Thank you, Lord, for letting me hear this! Kristen Rivera
Petra came to my little home town of Hobbs, New Mexico in 1978 and played at my church youth center. They inspired me to play guitar. After the show, I asked one of them what kind of guitar style it was when he moved his fingers so fast, and he told me it was lead guitar. And the rest is history. I purchased a $20 used electric guitar from a pawn shop and learned guitar on my own. Played guitar for my high school jazz band and my own rock band for our school talent show. Great memories!

Why do most Christian rock bands suck? Petra, and this song particularly, proves that good, fairly-heavy music can be good and heavily religious at the same time. Not even religious myself, but this song is a solid rocker. Also, the synth melody after the chorus is incredible. Love the weird, kinda medieval/renaissance harmony there.
Jimmy Mimpson Agreed! I was 5 when I first heard this in the mid-90s. My parents introduced me to this song. I remembered the chorus 20 years later and found it!
+Jimmy Mimpson >"Also, the synth melody after the chorus is incredible. Love the weird, kinda medieval/renaissance harmony there." Thanks for noticing! I put a lot of classically-influenced keyboard stuff into the recordings I played on, but the producer buried most of it in the mix. That chordal motif after the chorus, like at 3:47, is a combination of fifths in both hands. It starts with notes d, a, b-flat, f and proceeds down. The ending counterpoint is based on 18th century counterpoint of J.S. Bach. The backward voice at the start is me. Play it backwards to decode. If you ever listen to the song, More Power To Ya, you will find buried in mix and running throughout the length of the bridge, the entire Doxology which fit just perfectly over the chord changes. That tune is from 1674 by Thomas Ken, a priest in the Church of England. The words are “Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”
+Jimmy Mimpson Right on friend. I'm not a christian but I hear what you hear. that Bark like/ medieval harmony and the rest of it. There are a lot of great Christian bands.
+Jimmy Mimpson The production level of all CCM at the time was very very low, every band that wore that CCM banner in the late 70's and throughout the 80s had very poor production in studio recordings. The only Christian band in those times that had great production was Stryper, mainly because the label they were signed to was not a Christian label.
@gingervytis : Hey, my brother and I figured that out in the late 80's - we had this little keyboard that you could record yourself, play it back, even reverse it. We did it for this song intro, and that is what it says. I first heard these Petra albums on records, later cassettes and now CD's (and imported to AAC/WMA/MP3). Great music with great message, and Greg X. Volz has amazing range. Thanks for uploading it.
I would love to hear this remixed and the bass has more power to really raise the tempo and set a firm bottom to this tune; it has so much strength to really provide depth.
She just fired me .. definitely just like judus kiss . I gave everything .. we were friends.. and now .. I praise the Lord for what I see.. I bless those who cursed me.. thank you Jesus

Ken, a priest in the Church of England. The words are “Praise
God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.”
agreed entirely
+Jimmy Mimpson Right on friend. I'm not a christian but I hear what you hear. that Bark like/ medieval harmony and the rest of it. There are a lot of great Christian bands.
+Jimmy Mimpson The production level of all CCM at the time was very very low, every band that wore that CCM banner in the late 70's and throughout the 80s had very poor production in studio recordings. The only Christian band in those times that had great production was Stryper, mainly because the label they were signed to was not a Christian label.
Such a powerful song!
yep
@gingervytis : Hey, my brother and I figured that out in the late 80's - we had this little keyboard that you could record yourself, play it back, even reverse it. We did it for this song intro, and that is what it says. I first heard these Petra albums on records, later cassettes and now CD's (and imported to AAC/WMA/MP3). Great music with great message, and Greg X. Volz has amazing range. Thanks for uploading it.
Thank you! We need to see those cammos again!
Petra is a cool group from my time. they never get 👵
LOVE PETRA FORERUNNER CHRISTIAN ROCK 🔥
"Their rock is not as our Rock"! Praise You, Jesus!
Been listening to it my whole life
I would love to hear this remixed and the bass has more power to really raise the tempo and set a firm bottom to this tune; it has so much strength to really provide depth.
Here you go. ruclips.net/video/p1y1fPHw9wQ/видео.html
Saw them in concert in 1983
I saw them i think in the same year beyond belief came out. Awesome show.
She just fired me .. definitely just like judus kiss . I gave everything .. we were friends.. and now .. I praise the Lord for what I see.. I bless those who cursed me.. thank you Jesus
This reminds me of those '80's BIG boom boxes we used to carry on our shoulders to blast everybody off the map, not to mention perforate our own eardrums LOL!!!
@joyfilledsoul Very convicting! It really puts you in Jesus shoes, how he feels when we sin!
This is the video of the day for Aug. 3, 2013 on Rockandroll Bible on Facebook. thanks for sharing it.
I seem to remember the back masking section saying,"What are you looking for the devil for, when you oughta be looking for the Lord?" Musta been in the liner notes as I wore this tape out as a kid! Greg X rocks!
Thank you brothers I miss yall rocking in the astro world in houston Texas. Please pray they rebuild a six flags theme park in Houston Texas again. So you all can rock our socks off again.pease out
Such an awesome intro
Wow, thanks for the memories!!! Such a sweet compilation. :) woot
Awesome! 👊
If this song does not convict a person about sin, I feel there's no hope for them.
love it love it love it love it love it love it love it love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lives here in Nashville
wow!
Não sei faltar bem English mais i good Petra é a primeira banda que gostei que é dos USA
THIS is my jam
Scary but truthful lyrics. The kind that causes Christian people to search their own souls.
JESUS ROCKS!!!
petra was such a cool band....
I prefer this version.
I had a lot of problems growing up, ultra-right-wing family being one of many. It was so comforting to be able to bang my head to this when no one else was around. I always wished I could play like this. I'm glad for Petra being there, and Greg X Vols. It doesn't matter, soft ballads or kick-butt metal, Petra had it going on.
It's been a while since hearing this, TY
É com grande prazer que me inscrevo nesse canal.
I used to listen to these guys and Stryper when I was in high school.
BOB HARTMAN....... that is all
the bestttttt
one of my BC leaders at "pavillion of promise" EXPO 86 did THE best street drama to this incredilbly awesome "PETRA" song from the 80's. it was my fave. back then. bruxy cavey, who grew up in my times, the very same way as me. lest we forget man... cherished! many, many people don't know this but for sure our "heavenly Father does!" that's all i care about. todd gale from LIFE 100.3 knows PETRA better than i do. we are amogst the most privilidged that you can get. WOW
second best christian album of 1982 was the underated rock band Fireworks album Name Sightseeing at night, check it out
Craig Neeve I have the Fireworks Sight Seeing at night album!!
Does anyone else know what the backward masking says at the very beginning? Did you know it was there? "What are you looking for the devil when you should be looking for the Lord"
I used to think the Intro was some mediterranean/ Jewish language, lol.. especially the 'Nicolino' part... Awesome riff, solo, & classical outtro,
I will check that out, gracia.
The worst part of the song: 4:42
@champ41289 The beginning of the song is backmasking for the phrase "What are you looking for the devil for when you ought to be looking for the Lord"
Right on Mr. 1indianasmith. Preach it brother.
My mom raised me on this and as a Chrustian teen in the 80's her mom let her get away with this as to mainstream rock she disapproved of.
My sister and i grow up on Petra
