Asked what he loves about his Markbass rig, Bob replies: "Portability and lightness--in weight--even though it sounds like it weighs a ton." Bob's amp of choice is the TA503. "The tube preamp gives it a warm, growly valve-amp sound without the bulk and weight of a full valve amp. Plenty of warmth, backbone and weight in the actual sound."
Jimmy Kay from Canada's The Metal Voice ( / themetalvoice ) recently spoke to legendary Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Gary Moore and Uriah Heep bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley.

In the interview Bob Daisley spoke about his time in Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio and goes in depth in regards to the writing and recording sessions on the classic Ozzy Osbourne albums, Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, The Ultimate Sin and No Rest for the Wicked. As well Daisley talks about the court challenges he and drummer Lee Kerslake pursued over the years against Don Arden of Jet Records over unpaid royalties.

Bob Daisley is one of the great unsung heroes of hard rock. Total pro, team player and really humble. No pretentiousness. Kinda get the feeling that if you have a problem with Bob Daisley, the problem is you!

@Stormoringer Coming...I always read all these SAPPY poeple on YT calling their favorite millionaire Rock star being "CRIMINALLY UNDERATED"....But for BOB DAISLEY its absolutely true....he got caught in family squable between Sharon and her dad Bob Arden...and Daisley came up WAY short and really is "CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED "...after all the books have been written according to daisley and a lawyer that also wrote a book it came up that even OZZY helped Sharon against Daisley and Bob Arden had to choose Sharons side of things so he can see his grandkids...just crappy..but Im shure Daisley has more money than both of us...but it still sucks.

Daisley kept a journal every day for his entire career, which makes his side more believable to me. Keeping such a journal would be good advice for anyone, really. For one thing, it helps when you are trying to recall how things went down. For another thing, lawyers love them, because a written record carries more weight in court than somebody just trying to recall something from memory. If you're a credible person plus having a written record, it's going to be difficult to dispute you. That's why, when I had a friend who was having a dispute with his landlord, I told him, 'Keep a record of every conversation you have with him. Dates, times, places, phone calls, everything.' Chances are, your opponent in court won't have bothered to do that.

Bob sounds like the nicest guy in the world. If I didn’t get paid for all those songs I would have been highly upset.
It turns out he was getting paid a small percentage probably not enough considering his contributions to the OZZY albums. Contractual sgreements are important in these start up bands. Remember you are only one of the cogs in the wheel in these projects. Never liked much of rainbow the DAISELY basslines on MADMAN are awesome as well as some of his lyrics

I agree with just about everything you said, but he only played just a little on Rainbow’s, Long Live R&R, and just that tour.
But yes, you are 100% the rest.
He wasn’t in Rainbow long enough for Ritchie to fire him. That’s saying something!
Without Bob and Lee, there would be no Ozzy solo career. Period. His best albums were the first 2. Blizzard and Diary.
Don't forget Randy the incredible guitarist who shaped those albums and wanted to leave the band to study and progress further as a guitarist until Sharon forced him to continue the tour... the same tour which he died.
Without Randy, Bob and Lee. How you would take Randy out of the equation is beyond Baffling! He wrote the riffs, the solos and changed guitar in metal forever. Also as stated by Bob the first album was not called Blizzard of Oz. That was the name of the band. I do agree those have been Ozzy’s best albums in a long career. What’s sad to me is how Ozzy and Sharon screwed so many musicians over.Jake E Lee talked about it if you want to hear what they did to him. It’s the same thing they did to Bob.

Shane Griffin completely disagree those albums were his most commercially succesfull sure but really they weren’t that great, . Especially madman, it was written in 4 months cuz pressure form studio and it shows. Especially blizzard were very pop ish granted guitar wise it had some great moments. Also as bob has said “people don’t give credit for how much ozz acctually did, he wrote a lot of it, we all had different parts”

4# the manager, which well could have been some other aswell

6# and only 6th most important was John Osbourne's own inputs.

I had the good fortune of meeting Bob Daisley he was in a band with Carmine Appice, Jeff Watson at a club called Stockton Rocks,(Stockton Ca.)He took the time to have a long conversation with me about his bass rig, songs he wrote, he truly is a class act, a true gentleman very down to Earth.( Early 90s). It was kerslakes over the mountain intro that really taught me a fast triplet. Drummer since age 5

Bob is equally important and responsible in helping Ozzy revive his career as anyone, if not more so. The lyrics, co- writing music(both of which he didn't get credit for). Sharon basically shit on this man over the years just like with Kerslake and Jake E. Lee.

Lee Kerslake, great drummer one of my favorites and an early influence for me, I even use a bit of his solo from Gypsy on the Uriah Heep live 73 in my solo sometimes as nod to him
The lyrics on the first two Ozzy albums were incredible... pretty close to Geezer Butler... very intense. Written mostly by Daisley, Kerslake did a lot on the second album
I've been screaming for years, Bob Daisley is/was Ozzys secret weapon. All of Ozzys best albums have Bob all over them, the rest are mediocre at best. First bass line I ever learned was "I don't know". He'll always be in my top 3 bass players. So underrated.

*Bob Daisley wrote nearly all the lyrics on 5 of the first 6 Ozzy solo albums and played on 5 of the first 6 solo albums, and toured on BATM.*
He wrote and played on all 6 except he did not play on Ultimate Sin and did not write lyrics on No More Tears album. *Bob (and Randy/Jake/Zak) made Ozzy's career.*
Also played bass on Yngwie Malmsteens Odyssee album.
Bob is a genius... his work on all the albums are fantastic.
Sharon put the screws to every musician that helped make Ozzy so successful. Randy, Bob and Lee gave Ozzy new life. If you take one of those guys out of the equation it’s not the same. Jake talks about how bad Sharon screwed him on Bark at the Moon. It’s on line so look it up.

As an 11 year old bass player in early 1981. I had though that Rudy Sarzo played bass as he was listed as the song writer on Diary of a madman. It took another 11 years to discover Bob D. Listening to the albums (pre-remix) today, I am amazed how good a song writer and bass player Bob is.
I was 9yrs old in 1981, I bought the record new in Buena Park Ca. and still have it.
Side 1 has Bob as partial writer on ebery track. Side 2 has him and the rest of the blizzard of ozz as song writers for all the songs.
Wonderful brilliant interview...Daisley is my all time favorite bassist and probably my favorite lyricist. I have his book and have read it several times as there's so much to take in on his amazing career. The Blizzard of Ozz band is the GOAT for me. Diary is the ultimate masterpiece. Forever long live Daisley Kerslake and Rhoads.
Bob is undoubtedly one of the greatest songwriters in rock history, very underappreciated. He's so good he made the Eternal Idol sound great.

Awesome interview. Bob is the epitomy of what it means to be a really good person, humble, Kind, real, Uber talented, and a total class act/gentleman!! The one thing I wish the interviewer would have dealt into was The Holy Grail and all that he has and the little he was offered for it from lady evil/Sharon.
Love to hear about the royalties, contracts fee's etc - you really don't usually hear much detail on these aspects of band life. You also ask the right questions, which is great.
"I never considered myself a lyricist", proceeds to write two albums worth of some the greatest lyrics ever, dude......gimme a break.
Those were awesome lyrics.
The thing I like about his lyrics is they sound like Ozzy is singing about Ozzy. Ozzy did come up with some of the words mixed in with scats, Geezer and Bob Daisley as well, basically filled in between the dots with Ozzy's vocal melodies and scattered words. So it wasn't writing from scratch but still impressive.
@Barry McCockiner Wrong. Bob Daisley even explains it if you'd pay attention. Read his book. Look up the studio recording of where they are working on the Bark at the Moon album where you can hear Ozzy doing the scatting with lyrics. Watch video of Geezer explaining how Ozzy would scat the vocal melodies with a few words and Geezer would then fill in the rest. I think you're ignorant on this subject.
@Barry McCockiner You're clueless. It's a band effort. A great number of songs are written with each member of the song- writing team in the 'band' adding their parts. Some songs are written by one song writer but not usually in rock and metal. Country music is one form where one person sits down with an acoustic guitar and writes the entire song. You are ignorant, Chief.

The bass playing on diary(album not just song) is fucking delicious. Blizzard & Bark too but the 1-2 punch of bass and guitar on diary was so unique.
I can remember even today , that the first Ozzy album was going to be a band called "Blizzard of Oz" and it was taken either from Circus or Creem magazine, it was just a small story announcing Ozzy's next project, after being fired from Black Sabbath, so it was a surprise when it came out, and the album being called the bands name?? and looking more like a Solo album? Now after all these years the truth is finally being told!

Saw the band on the Bark At The Moon tour twice in one week in Germany. First time was wednesday December 13th in Offenbach. Think Y&T opened up. Then saw the band on sunday December 18th at Dortmund which had like 7 bands that day. Iron Maiden, Priest, Scorpions, Ozzy, Quiet Riot and Def Leppard. Wish i could travel back in time.
i never knew until recently that this dude wrote my favorite lyrics to my favorite metal song ever.. "Voices... in the darkness.. scream away my mental health.."

Great interview and I highly recommend "For Facts Sake", it is truly one of the best rock books out there.
I find it simply amazing that this man says "I didn't regard myself as a lyricist"; probably the biggest understatement of his entire career.
No doubt Randy was a beast of a guitar player. Doubt it? Listen to every other player try and do his solos and it's apparent they're reaching while Randy was well within his comfort zone. He had his own style.
Bob Daisley was just as monumental in Ozzy's career. No other band has ever sounded as progressive or innovative
I could listen to this guy talk for hours! He speaks so well and tells the stories so succinctly! Those two albums (Blizzard & Diary) are two of the best rock albums…ever! And while I didn’t know it at the time, I guess I have Bob Daisley to thank for that! (I’d sure love to hear the “Holy Grail” tapes!)
Bob was right!!! He said the chemistry was great with Kerslake as the drummer, and didn't want Tommy Aldridge to replace him for that sole reason! I love the drumming on the first two albums ...the chemistry was perfect between the four!
Hi Bob how’s life. You seem to forget I was there at the very beginning. I was living with Ozzie when you arrived. It was Randy and his girlfriend first then you arrived at Ranton Staffordshire England. I played the first gigs and have my recordings. I played the first crazy train and Ozzie wrote the lyrics, I was there. Also Ozzies first wife gave me a diary to keep a record of our journey and called it Diary of a madman. My dear friend Bill Hunt was the first keyboard player and can support my story. Bill created the first chords of MrCrowley. I’ve still got the guitar that Randy played the first chords to goodbye to romance on. I really treasure. 📚🥁🎸🤹♂️👍⚡️⚡️⚡️
My true belief is that Bob was the glue that held the first incarnation together. He really was an excellent addition, Ozzy and indeed Randy had huge respect for him from the start. The "biz" is a funny old thing though so it was always going to end up being an Ozzy solo band really... One way or another
Agreed but Bob has told the story of when Sharon and Ozzy fired them (Bob & Lee) and Randy out of respect wanted to quit in solidarity but Bob & Lee convinced Randy to stay as they loved Randy and wanted him to have success with the Ozzy gig.

Diary of a Madman is a masterwork, and now I know it was you that had such a huge hand in putting it together. The lyrics were sublime. No dismissal of any other part, of course, it was all grand. Anyweird, my fave album from B of Oz. Good to get to hear about you and the part you played in it.

Bob's book is a bible for any rock/ metal fan, what a fantastic/inspiring read, haven't put it down, thanks Bob for giving such an amazing read, you are truly an unsung hero, amazing lyricist, musician, arranger and story teller, right down to your exact diary dates for all the milestones of your career for which there are many and i haven't even finished the book yet. This isn't just a book on Ozzy this man has worked with everyone and anyone notable to hard rock heavy metal industry 70's onwards.
The boy from Sydney Australia did well alright! A true Aussie legend. So good to hear tales from the man himself, what a great life you have led, thanks for taking the chance on your bass guitar and leaping into the unknown with that first trip to the U.K all those years ago. What Don Arden and Sharon put you through is unforgivable and at every backstabbing obstacle they put in your way you took the high road for the greater good of the music, your only demand being to be treated fairly for your contributions for yourself and others even to your own detriment, what a noble honourable man you truly are, the music you created is and always will be timeless, you gave Ozzy the gift of his solo career with Randy and Lee, everyone should know the truth and now will, this man deserves more, history needs to be rewritten, credit needs to be given where it's due, please do some Sydney gigs, clinics, being a central coast aussie it was amazing to know you had been to my hometown or an hours drive away in Sydney, my book is signed but i'd like to shake the hand of the man that gave us all such legendary music ✌🤘👍🎸🎵🎶 thanks Bob!!!!

It’s crazy to hear Bob talk about Cardi’s in Houston. I used to play that place a lot in the early to mid 2000s until they closed it down. And Pam was still there.

I am a great admirer of Randy Rhoads (actually the greatest I know personally hahaha ...) and I always want to know what happened in those magical years of the early career of everyone involved in the first two albums. Daisley is a great songwriter and lyricist. I can't stress his lyrics enough. Subtle, poetic and clever. He wants everyone to know he was the head songwriter. He repeats that a lot in the last 20 years. But I can't blame him. Imagine all the people taking credit in interviews and literal album credits...for masterpieces you were primarily responsible for. I have not read his book. But I bet he had a lot to do with Rainbow's early greatness as well.

Lot of people do not know in America about the band "Girl" he mentions around 7:21 mark, the lead singer is Phil Lewis (L.A. Guns) and the lead guitarist was Phil Collen (Def Leppard). They had a couple of hits in England yet fell apart as soon as Collen joined Leppard, Lewis still under contract with the label, was matched up with Guns who were on the same labek and moved to L.A. and replaced Paul Black and before him Axl Rose as the lead singer in L.A. Guns, and both of them are still touring and making new music with Leppard and Guns.

Bob Daisley was always one of the all time great bass players to me. I loved his playing in Blizzard Of Ozz, and Diary Of A Madman, and it's always inspired my bass playing a lot. Bob Daisley was a genius.

@@kevinshort3483 her father is the one who taught Peter Grant, the notorious zeppelin manager...her father was mobbed up big time. he was the epitome of the rough side of the music biz ...Sharon learned from the master, and unfortunately she protected her husband's (and her own) interests and guys like Bob and Jake were marginalized as a result. the reason they always sing the praises of randy is not just because of how great randy was, but because he almost became martyred by dying so prematurely....obviously I'm not telling you anything you don't know since you mentioned Don Arden

At least Ozzy sent Lee the gold record he requested in his terminal state for Blizzard. It doesn't undo the wrongs but it's something.
See my comment I just posted above. Sharon must have softened and "let" Ozzie send it to him with that note. She is clearly her father's daughter.

@@markrago7217 Ozzy was a rock legend for his singing (and co-songwriting) with Black Sabbath. Their first 6 albums are classics. His solo career unexpectedly flourished thanks to working with Randy, Bob, and Lee to produce 'Blizzard' and 'Diary'. That initial band had great songwriting chemistry. But it's important to note, EVERY band Ozzy has been involved with was a success. His sense of melody elevated the songwriting of those he collaborated with. It wasn't just luck and surrounding himself with talented people.

Bob Daisley Is Fantastic Musician. Its pretty damn rough what he went through with the Ozzy camp.But he has had some great success. Rightfully So.
Diary Of A Madman is the best Ozzy Album and Ozzy didn't write any of that Album but gets all the credit.
Aside from having a unique voice .. Ozzy has relied on others talent his entire career . And to think they call him the Godfather of Metal !! without Tony , Geezer , Bob and Randy he wouldn't have a career . Such a shame Bob and others have been screwed by Sharon .. She wouldn't have her mansions and lifestyle without the contributions Bob gave to Ozzy .. that started his solo success
Ozzys just a drug addict puppet. Never wrote a damn thing. They just told him were to stand and what to sing like any other pop star.
A "unique voice"... yeah you could say that. He's an absolutely awful singer. It's amazing how successful he's been as a vocalist with no talent. Charisma is a wonderful thing!
@@IainFrame Ozzy was a terrible singer. Nasally horseshit and I wouldn't even say he's charismatic either. I think he just put with the right people who did all the work to get him over with people. All hype no skill. Cant sing, didn't write a damn thing, and hasnt been able to form a sentence in 30 years. Just a drugged out junkie.

I lost all respect for ozzy and sharon when they decided to screw over Jake and then I found out the screwed everyone they did business with, and then I found out that it was a band called Blizzard Of Ozz and they screwed the band to give all credit to Ozzy. Ozzy takes a lot of credit for things he didn't do
Its funny how Zack Wylde wasn't screwed over by Ozzy & Sharon, after Dio left Sabbath to form his own band Dio's former band members would make the same claims ,seeing how Ozzy & Dio both had massive cult like fans who spent $10-$40 an album/cd and the band members were virtual unknown to the public i dont believe any of them were made the promises they claim,because with thousands of unknown musicians willing to take their place for union wages there was no reason to make insane promises,just because they wrote the songs in no way automatically means they are due any more money than their salaries ,its more likely they were hired & salaried according to contracts because they had the ability to write music quickly .
@Mr. Omaha. 'Bark At The Moon' was the only album where Ozzy took credit for things he didn't do. It says "All songs & lyrics written by Ozzy Osbourne", but everyone now knows Jake E Lee was cheated out of his songwriting credits and Bob Daisley (who had been fired) agreed to help write the songs for that album in return for a large up front cash payment. The songwriting credits should've been "Osbourne/Lee/Daisley". The songwriters for every other Ozzy album were properly credited.
@@levigarrett8674 I agree with this presumption. Bob Daisley was a sideman on bass who happened to be a talented writer & arranger. It's unfortunate that he wasn't paid all of the royalties that he felt he was owed - name a musician who was - but it's also a bit rich of him to claim that him jumping on the Ozzy Osbourne train meant that he was an equal member of the "band". Ozzy was the star. Not Bob. He probably got uppity about it at the time and that's why they fired him.
@@carlmarks8170 Not true, when I bought the first 2 albums when they came out, the lyrics were credited to Ozzy alone, it was only the lawsuit that the other guys brought in the 90's that forced the credit change to the lyrics.

Bob and Randy made Ozzy. Not taking away from the fact that Ozzy had one of the most unique singing voices in history, but he never wrote a single lyric and elite musicianship behind him was crucial in Ozzy's success. Crazy Train was a Rhoads/Daisley collaboration and is one of the top heavy rock anthems of all time.
