  • In this video, Certified Bates Method Teacher, Nathan Oxenfeld explains the importance of Blinking.
    Did you know there is a correct way to blink and an incorrect way to blink?
    He also reiterates the Fundamental Principle of the Bates Method, which is known as flashing, or reverse blinking.
    He answers the questions:
    "I find conscious blinking a strain, because I close my eyes temporarily and seem to hold the eyeball stationary. If I shut my eyes for a longer period would that be blinking?"
    "By blinking do you mean shutting and opening the eyes quickly, or is done slowly, like a wink?"
    "When I look at an object and blink, it appears to jump with each blink. Would this be considered the short swing?"
    "Often, when I am trying to see a thing, it will come to me, but my eyes will commence to smart, and then I blink and lose it. What shall I do to overcome that?"
    Nathan will be leading the next Eyesight & Insight Immersion Retreat from October 17th - 20th, 2019 at Prama Institute in Asheville, North Carolina. Go to www.integraley... for more details.

    I was gonna say this video adds really little at the cost of a lot of time to those who do a modicum a research on this topic, but i tried the reverse blinking (after having some ciliary spasm release from a different exercise) and it's been incredible how much more spasm seems releasing. after a 5to10second closing of the eyes and opening my eyes, my eyes seem to autofocus like cameras do and things go into focusing and amazingly clear at least in sunlight. I get teary eyed fast and so go back to closing my eyes. rinse and repeat. thank you!

      I agree, that at first some of the Bates Method principles and practices can seem a little too simple to be very effective. But it sounds like after some experimentation you have discovered the true value of a simple approach! Keep it up :)

      Ah, interesting observation. Have you tried doing that with your eyes closed? It may lead to a different experience, one with more coordination. Doing the Bates practices with the eyes closed simply using the inner vision or imagination, is a great way to enhance the physical version of the practice with the eyes open.

    Hello Nathan! Can you please do a video related to glaucoma? do you have any suggestions on what exercises to do to enhance your peripheral vision? thanks a lot.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the suggestion! Maybe I'll do one on glaucoma and cataracts too. Palming is one of the most important practices for glaucoma in general. A simple way to enhance your peripheral vision is to gently swing or pivot your head side to side while you read this comment, and notice the unfocused objects moving around the screen in your periphery. So you maintain central fixation in the middle while still being able to notice gentle movement in your periphery ie. what is to the left and right of your screen and what is above and below your screen. Let your blurry periphery sharpen your central.

    I’ve been blinking conscious since hearing to blink more, how would I do it unconscious again? Its difficult because if I dont blink conscious, I’ll likely stare.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  2 года назад

      The more you practice conscious blinking, the more it will happen unconsciously, so you won't have to worry so much about the stare over time. But keep in mind there is nothing wrong with blinking your eyes consciously, it still helps!

    @user-ye2kk7do3w 4 года назад +4

    Hello, Nathan! That was very helpful! Thank you! Every time when I can remind myself, that every blink is a little rest and period of blackness, my vision improves. Wow!
    But I have astigmatism and every time I blink, everything doubles in a slightly different way. This is shifting too, I guess. But it is so frustrating, that every time I pay attention to it, I want to stop it, to fix everything in place. Can't figure out, how to feel more comfortable about it
    Sorry about any language mistakes

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад +7

      One of Dr. Bates' main suggestions about astigmatism was to "ignore astigmatic images"... so when you pay lots of attention to the shadows and the double images, you are feeding the astigmatism and keeping it present in your consciousness. Practice ignoring it, focusing on the image that you know is real, not the one you know is false, and over time it may decrease. Also, watch my interview with Esther Joy Van Der Werf about reversing astigmatism naturally if you haven't already. Thanks for watching!

    Sometimes I feel like my eyes can't relax until I squeeze my eyes shut for a minutes (the yoga tense & release technique). I suppose this is due to a muscle spasm, because as I tense my eyes shut, I focus on the area where I feel stress, then after a few minutes, I can feel that part of the eye warm up, which feels super relaxing.
    So if f I blink more, my eyes will feel less stress, but it's very difficult for me to blink unconsciously. I guess it's a matter of doing very light, conscious, blinks daily until eventually one blinks unconsciously.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  3 года назад +3

      Yes, that's right. Tense and release is a good practice, but it should not influence your unconscious blinking. You say it's difficult for you to blink unconsciously, but can you notice that you've probably blinked at least once or twice in the time it has taken you to read this comment. A good way to demonstrate the ease of the blink is actually to force yourself to stare too long. If you stare at this letter for as long as possible without blinking or shifting (A), it shouldn't take very long for your eyes to literally crave a blink. That demonstrates how good blinking feels and how automatic it really is.

  • @troutfisher7182
    @troutfisher7182 Год назад

    I've tried all different ways to blink. Soft , light, quicker, slower etc. Blinking always creates complete visual chaos and worsens my astigmatism. I have to wait for five or ten seconds for the astigmatism to clear up a bit. Shifting clears things up, blinking triggers extreme astigmatism. Its frustrating

    What do you think about warren and steiner methods for eyesight improvement are they helpful?

    • @CyBORGBOY11
      @CyBORGBOY11 4 года назад +1

      Warren and Steiner are also Bates' Method.
      Warren elaborated the theory about triangulation, but peripheral vision is not a new idea is an old concept.
      Steiner talks about active focus in other words it is "swingging" or "rocking" like Bates taught.
      The idea about "3D and tunnel vision" its just a simple logic extracted from "peripheral enviroment" thoughts.
      Because there are not things beside and behind you in a 2D vision (tunnel vision). Eyes cant regulate their zoom on lens with no stimulli outside. Because the eyes use things outisde to notice light to calibrate its focus. When everything is blurry there are no things to do this process.
      And triangulation is also a conclusion made about observing the peripheral vision. Peripheral vision awareness makes you more relaxed, you cant overthinking when you are paying attention to the external World, and as you know thoughts can produce emotions then strain in your mind and eyes.

      Pinhole glasses can be great alternatives to prescription glasses if they help you see more clearly. Their main purpose is to demonstrate the power of central fixation. They block some of your periphery, and allow the light to focus on your fovea centralis. So do not only wear pinhole glasses as crutches, but wear them to train yourself to eventually be able to maintain central fixation even when you take them off.

      Yes, one of the main purposes of blinking is to cleanse the surface of the eye, clean any dust or debris from the surface, and lubricate the corneas. Each blink stimulates a release of oils from your meibomian glands at the base of your eyelashes, so it is so important to blink to maintain a healthy tear film all day long and prevent dry eyes.

    Hello nathan, does mental strain plays factor in causing myopia?, and if so do you have any tips to reduce mental strain?

      Hey Dustin, according to Dr. Bates, pretty much all vision problems are caused by mental strain, which causes physical strain. For example, if you saw a scary movie when you were really young and it caused you mental strain in the form of fear, you may have enlisted a physical protection mechanism in the form of physical eye strain. The muscles tightened as a result of your mind. Therefore, only doing physical eye exercises will not reverse your myopia, because your mind is still keeping your eye muscles in a state of chronic tension. So the solution is to address the mind primarily through mental relaxation practices that the Bates Method teaches... then and only then will your eye muscles relax and stay relaxed. (By the way, that scary movie example is a true story from one of my vision students... but keep in mind, it's often a combination of mental strains, not just one instance.) Dr. Bates' "swinging black period" is one great example of how to reduce mental strain. If you close or palm your eyes and picture a little black spot swinging slowly like a pendulum, your mind might relax in a matter of moments. If you can feel your eyes relax and start to shift more with your eyes closed as a result of imagining the swinging black period, maybe you can start trying that with your eyes open too!

      Have you tried any forms of light therapy, whether sunning from the Bates Method, or things like photobiomodulation (red/infrared light)? The sun in particular can have beneficial effects on your eyelids and tear production system.

      Hello. Before succumbing to glasses (which can be a very slippery slope) I would try getting the clarity back naturally. Once you start wearing glasses, it's harder to get rid of them. If you implement the correct vision habits and hold off on the glasses, you might be able to avoid needing them at all. This is a very important time for you to be doing the right thing for your eyes. Computer use does not have to equate to vision loss. Learn good vision habits while on your computer like the blinking taught in this video, as well as near/far adjusting, closing and palming every so often, rhythmic breathing, and relaxed use of your eyes the entire time you're working. Strain is the cause of myopia, so avoid eye strain and mental strain at work to return to clear vision naturally.

      Liliana, it might be more helpful for you to work with a Spanish-speaking Bates teacher, like Dr. Ainhoa de Federico. volveraverclaro.com/
