      Keep in mind the next nearest spell that lets you teleport an unwilling creature (not including teleportation circle or arcane gate as you just drag someone through no save needed) is the 6th level spell scatter. And there are many places you could move someone with out them being safe, like any ongoing aoe spell such as cloudkill or flaming sphere that happens to be sitting next to a locked cage.

    I like reaction spells because it helps give that "wizard duel" vibe that the initiative system hampers. I think it could be cool to have a caster who specializes in reactions, if there were enough reaction spells. But Silvery Barbs is a bad level 1 spell. OP. Consider ounterspell, a reaction spell which cancels other creature's spell actions after the fact, is a third level spell. It has been called OP and a game wrecker by some. Silvery Barbs cancels anything requiring a d20, can be invoked after that roll is deemed a success, can give advantage, and is only first level. Too powerful. Needs nerfing, or spell level should be upped.

    • @RedrumZombies

      -Wrong. It makes someone re-roll or roll in general on a ST, Ability Check, or Attack, after they succeeded once.
      -Meaning it can still succeed, and it needs to fit in 1 of those 3.
      -Depending on the creature used on, and which success is targeted, it can be worse or better than a 50/50, more likely to be worse. But is just an extra chance in the caster's or their ally's favor.

    These are some absurd spells, at least for their level range. I often find myself with an abundance of first level spell slots, so Silvery Barbs is insane, even more for that. Pseudo-Disadvantage that also grants advantage? Absurd. Vortex Warp is fine, probably be more reasonable if it was maybe a third level spell. That upcasting bonus is really cool though, and much appreciated. I'm tired of upcasts just being 'add 1 more dice roll' because rolling these 8d6s was already so much fun. @@Mr1991bbk I've almost never played a game where your line of sight was restricted to exclusively directly in front of you on reactions. You can see the entire battlefield, so long as they are within your view range and not behind full cover or stealthed, they're in your line of sight.
      Also, I don't believe subtle spell interacts with Silvery Barbs in any capacity. You only need to see them succeed on a d20 roll. Subtle Spells only hide Verbal and Somatic components during the cast, aka gestures and words. In a vast majority of DM rulings, you'll still know if the roll is a success. It's also used for more than just Spell Attack rolls, in fact those are likely to be one of the last things you want to spend that on. Saving Throws from your own spells are what I imagine the most useful and common application will be, or on critical hits.
      Not to mention, you can eventually just make it your signature spell as a Wizard, allowing you to freely force a re-roll every turn, but that's at high level play which almost no campaign really delves into, and balancing at that point is thrown out the window.

    Yeah I don't know what Wizards is thinking with silvery barbs. It takes one of the most powerful abilities of arguably the most powerful subclass in the game or at least up there with the chronurgy wizard and lets you cast it instead of twice per day way more as a first level spell. This can turn a hail mary save or suck casting of a spell into an oh this hold monster vs a creature with a good save and magic resistance will work more often than not. Plus it takes the flavor of the chronurgy and divination wizard and gives it out for free to all the wizards. And it gives advantage to top it off. This spell could not give advantage and be 3rd level and then be well balanced. I haven't banned any published material from wizards at my tables yet but this, and the backgrounds in this book had to fit into that category. Love a lot of the other spells though!

      And what’s nuts is that it will make advantage into a pseudo “triple disadvantage”. Then you give someone advantage! Absolutely nuts

    _Borrowed knowledge, kinetic jaunt,_ and _wither and bloom_ are perfectly fine. I wish _kinetic jaunt_ followed the established precedent for shunting (either 1d10 force damage or twice the number of feet you are shunted), and I wish _wither and bloom_ just gave healing instead of requiring a Hit Die, but there's nothing absurd about them as is.
    _Vortex warp_ is only busted in terms of range. From one end of the 90-foot-radius circle to the other is *180 feet.* For only a 2nd level spell slot. Teleporting an enemy into lava isn't awful because it's a Con save, and most monsters have high Con.
    _Silvery barbs_ is just full of oversights. Should've been a 2nd level spell like the rest of them, you shouldn't be able to do it on your own spells, and granting advantage should've been contingent on the initial target still failing (if for no other reason than flavor). If you change the duration to Conc., up to 1 minute, you could leave it as a 1st level spell.

    I totally agree I was disappointed that one 5 spells were added in this book. At least 3 per college would have been great.
    Borrowed Knowledge is okay, but it seems weak for a 2nd level spell and it is competing with Enhance Ability which gives Adv on all checks associated with a stat. The nice thing is this spell can stack with Enhance Ability since it is not Conc. I think it would have made more sense if the spell let you target a creature and select a skill the target is proficient with, you then get Proficiency and can use your spellcasting modifier instead of the skills normal stat modifier. Then you could actually be borrowing knowledge. The other reason to differentiate the spell is that Knowledge Clerics already get Knowledge of the Ages via Channel Divinity.
    Kinetic Jaunt is very weak, when you consider there is Zephyr Strike at 1st level which allows you to ignore opportunity attacks and Ashardalon's Stride at 3rd level. Both of these spells deal additional damage in different ways. Kinetic Jaunt should have dealt some sort of damage just for thematic purposes. This is the Prismari spell which is about mixing magic with the arts. If say the spell mentioned that the 1st time you move in your turn everyone within 5 ft. takes 1d6 of your choice of Cold, Fire or Lightning damage it would make the spell worth 2nd level.
    Silvery Barbs is SOOO good, I am happy it was added to Bards since it offers non-Lore and Eloquence Bard's a defensive reaction if in a more limited way. It cannot be Twinned or Split but does work with the Order Domain's 1st level feature. I think it is under costed, it should be a 2nd level spell. this would limit it's use more since you only get three 3rd level spell slots and people wouldn't be able to take it with the Fey-Touched Feat.
    Vortex Warp is okay, it isn't going to reliably reposition an enemy due to it being a Con Save. It can move an ally reliably, it is basically a single target version of Scatter.
    Wither and Bloom is exciting in that we see WotC utilizing Hit Die outside of a Short Rest. Something I have been asking for, for a long time. It is a decent low level damaging Necromancy spell. It works with Necromancers Grim Harvest, it works with Life Cleric healing, Circle of Wildfire's Enhanced Bond, etc... As you mentioned there are some cool Hit Die interactions as well.

    Looking at Vortex Warp, there's some wiggle room in the wording, I feel. "that can support the target without the target having to squeeze" could mean, as you take it, "could support the target's volume", but it could also be a clumsy way of saying (a) can support the target (ie, they can stand there without falling or falling in), and also (b) the target won't be squeezing to be there. But also you probably can't teleport someone into lava because the space you send them to you need to be able to see, and you can't see into the lava. (Unless you've got some kind of vision such that you can.) Still a pretty busted spell. Maybe destroy the supports for a bridge and send it plummeting into a chasm... then teleport someone onto the "surface" that is a flat surface that happens to be gathering downward momentum...

  • @zorkwhouse8125

    I don't think teleporting someone onto lava would work for vortex warp because it says on a surface that can support them, and lava wouldn't qualify because you'd sink into lava and therefore not be supported. The liquid part of the description I'm pretty sure is meant to be used if you want to teleport someone to a position you can see under water - or I guess in another transparent liquid - just letting you know that you can use it there also without having to teleport someone to the ground at the bottom of the body of water. But I think otherwise the surface you teleport someone onto has to be solid at the time of the teleportation. So you could put them on top of a wall of force etc and then subsequently drop them into lava by canceling the wall, but I don't think you could teleport them directly on top of the lava (or on top of any other liquid I presume) because of the above and can't teleport them into the lava because you wouldn't be able to see the location.
    I wonder if you can teleport someone that is unconscious. So that you could teleport an ally that has been downed away from enemies that would otherwise be able to subsequently attack them to finish them off. It still has to be done on your turn because it takes an action, but if you're turn came before the other enemies then you should be able to do it in time to save the character.

    You could definitely put an enemy into a pool of lava/acid... heck, you could probably put them into a bonfire. Teleporting them into/onto a Gelatinous Cube sadly doesn't work. The cube counts as an occupied space since it is a creature. Technically speaking, you also can't teleport/summon something above a creature as well as they count occupied space as if on a 2D grid, so teleporting them above the cube so they drop into it also does not work (not that it would anyways, because I don't think teleporting someone above an object counts either).

    Something that's insane about _Silvery Barbs..._ IT'S NOT DISADVANTAGE. Unless I'm crazy, _IT IS WORDED SIMILARLY TO THE WAY THE LUCKY FEAT IS._ This spell is insane. It should be a 3rd level spell _AT MINIMUM_ balance-wise. I'm not saying that the spell is bad, because I really like the concept. However, it is far too powerful. It turns advantage into super disadvantage for the enemy, and it gives an ally advantage in their next attack.
    I would totally allow this spell in my games with the following changes:
    1) It's a 3rd level spell
    2) The secondary effect is removed
    3) It activates whenever the target makes the check instead of when the target succeeds.
    If you wanted to keep it as a lower level spell, I would do the following:
    1) Split the effects into two separate spells. The first effect stays is a 2nd level spell, and the second effect is a cantrip.
    2) The first effect activates whenever the target makes a check, instead of when the target succeeds a check.
    3) The first effect imposes disadvantage instead of its current effect
    4) The second effect takes an action to cast instead of a reaction
    5) The second effect costs concentration.
    Edit: Also, _Vortex Warp_ is the same thing, but it is also being changed to a 4th-level spell at my table. There will be more restrictions, and no up casting. I like the spell tho.

    So here are all the issues I've managed to come up with for *Silvery Barbs* alone:
    - The Heightened Spell Metamagic allows you to force a target to roll a saving throw with disadv. for three (3) sorcery points. This is a 1st Level spell, so it can be substituted for two (2) sorcery points, which makes it a better choice at the cost of a reaction. Moreover, you decide to use after the target rolls, so it's never a gamble on whether you should have used it.
    - It can be used on Attack Rolls, Ability Checks or Saving Throws...
    >So this can potentially negate critical hits.
    >force a target to re-roll a saving throw against a "save or suck" spell (e.g. hold person), which essentially means you can cast a high level (up to 9) spell again (reroll) as a reaction for the cost of a 1st level spell
    >force a target to re-roll a counterspell check, potentially allowing a powerful attack to go through
    - It can be occasionally better than a Shield spell because it negates crits and can always potentially work even if the initial attack roll is really high
    - As an 18th level wizard (pretty late game but still), it can be cast for free, always, meaning it should be cast every turn
    - It can be used in tandem with disadvantage to give triple disadvantage and a feat like Lucky to give quadruple disadvantage
    - On top of all this crap, it also gives inspiration

    • @manbearpun5447
      @manbearpun5447 2 года назад

      If you think it is too powerful, give it concentration. That cuts much of its power out since it will be most effective with concentration-based spells. Also, in late game most monsters you fight have some kind of magic resistance. So it isn't as much of a big deal as you might think it is.

It's been stated by Jeremy Crawford before that monsters can spend hit dice when they short rest, so that's been the means in which players with minions can allow them chances to heal. Will this use of the spell come up too often? Maybe not. I'd think letting a player spend hit dice would be more beneficial, but keeping your zombie up so it can keep tanking hits might be worthwhile.

    • @Negeta
      @Negeta 2 года назад

      Additional point: I believe this would also be quite beneficial for your wildshaped druid party members. While wild shaped, a druid assumes their forms hit points and hit dice. As such, a druid can expend one of their wild shape forms to heal their animal form and not expend any of their druid hit die. On the contrary, they’d be unable to spend their druid hit die or heal up their non-wild shaped form at all.
      So this gives a druid access to their form’s hit dice in a manner that doesn’t require a short rest while in animal form.

    First: my issue with Silvery Barbs is that it mimics other things but has more utility and uses. For example, I have a chronurgy wizard, who gets the chronal shift ability. This is a reaction to force a reroll on an any roll (so can be used to turn an ally's failed save into a success, but usually is reserved as an anti crit button), similar to the barbs spell. However, it is only 2 uses per long rest, has a 30ft range, and you don't use the better roll, you are forced to take the new one. Which means you could accidentally turn an enemy hit into a crit. Barbs can be used many more times, especially with updating or an 18th level wizard at will.
    Second: PHB: "You can end concentration at any time (no action required)." By RAW, you don't need to ready an action to drop concentration. You can just drop it whenever you want.

      The chronoturgy still is useful because it is a separate resource and technically has wider uses to still give it credit.

    Wow, all this time I thought reaction spells were the same as bonus action spells; meaning you could only cast a cantrip if you had already cast a spell during your turn. This would prevent you from counterspelling an enemy counterspelling you (which makes no sense IMO). Yikes! I am going to leave that house rule in place at my table.

    • @Guardian14Acky
      @Guardian14Acky 2 года назад

      My playgroup has house ruled that you just can't cast a second spell on the same turn unless it is a cantrip. however a round is a different matter, so you can fireball and counterspell in the same round, just not in the same turn. This prevented the bonkers counterspell wars that would happen because half the party knew it and every caster they went up had to know it to keep the party from from using it to stop any and every enemy spell. I think we had one turn of combat with upwards of 6 counterspells cast... it got tiring to run and play in.

    • @Guardian14Acky
      @Guardian14Acky 2 года назад

      @@RedrumZombies Its not that no one can react on a PC's turn, its that during its turn, no character (PC, enemy, or otherwise) can use one of their reactions. There are a very small group of edge cases that this hits other than counterspell so it really hasn't been an issue.

    • @blakerosenbrook
      @blakerosenbrook 2 года назад

      @@RedrumZombies I just limit them to casting one spell per turn. They are free to take reactions during their own turn, including casting a cantrip in addition to a spell. I don't want to limit their action economy, just multiple spells during their own turn.

    Wither and Bloom does not state that damage must be dealt in order to heal someone. This is very close to being a true healing spell which wizards can access.

    The way that it's worded, it sounds like Silvery Barbs negates an enemy rolling with advantage. If they've rolled two d20s and taken the highest, you make them reroll one and take the lowest instead.

    • @abcrasshadow9341
      @abcrasshadow9341 2 года назад

      Pretty sure that is not how it works since the result must have been a success before silvery barbs can trigger.
      Aka d.adv /adv resolves first to determine whether the roll was a success then it triggers silvery barbs condition so the target must roll a new d20 and chose the lowest between the new d20 rolled and the old success.

      @@abcrasshadow9341 exactly. For example, they roll with advantage and get a 19 and a 20. You use this spell to make them reroll the 20 and they roll a 1, which they must take. Wither and bloom is a fun spell, a lesser version of a direct hp drain spell like vampiric touch to give lower level necromancers something to do (very needed imo). Kinetic jaunt is also fun, and I like that this book remembers artificers exist when deciding who gets what spells (hopefully that's a norm now that Tasha's released). I totally agree that silvery barbs is busted as shit and clear power creep, and it's part of a weird trend of making most new overpowered shit accessible to wizards.
    In fizban's, we get fizban's platinum shield, a far superior version of primordial ward that adds bonus AC on top of having primordial ward's exact damage resistances (and is accessible to wizards instead of druids). Tasha's goes out of its way to make nearly all new spells and magic items wizards-only or wizards-accessible. Explorer's guide to wildemount had the chronurgy wizard, the most busted subclass of any class to date, while also making all the spells wizards only (and weirdly restricting them to the most busted subclass and graviturgy only). This book makes all new spells accessible to wizards and lets them cheaply impose disadvantage on all enemy saving throws once they're mid-level and 1st level slots are disposable. I understand wizards are a big part of the general lore for both D&D and magic, but it's an extremely bizarre decision to not only make them the most powerful class on purpose on release, but continue stretching that power gap with nearly each new content drop.
    Does anyone actually want this type of stuff? I like wizards and I like playing characters as effectively as I can in combat, but I don't want to feel like a powergamey dickbag just for playing a wizard. At the same time it feels bad to see new content drop and know you'll have to ban it from use at your table because it's just that absurdly broken. Like, if I posted silvery barbs a month ago as a homebrew spell, I probably would have gotten laughed at for poor understanding of game balance.

    So how would Silvery Barb work with Split Enchantment from enchantment Wizard? Considering it’s a two part thing. Like I’d imagine twin spell obviously wouldn’t work.
    Also Eldritch Knight Fighter with Commanders Strike maneuver and Silvery Barb can be some nasty setup for two sneak attacks in a single round when paired with a rogue.
    Also Arcane Trickster Rogue getting it too.
