I wish there was a way to get past those evil alignment restrictions. Like what if you are a necromancer and you deal with souls all the time. Actually that might be an interesting idea for regular games. What if traditionally dark magic made a "good" aligned person evil for game affects. Like if you are a warlock detect good and evil would say you are evil because it senses the patron, or somthing simpler with the negative energy from a necromancer.

If the act of murder is evil surely ripping someones soul out of their afterlife just to be murdered and twisted by the dark energies of the negative energy plane. Necromancers have to be the most unemphatic careless sons of bitches to do what they do. Closest they can really get to good is being a highly functioning sociopath. When you bring a medium or larger living creature to 0 hit points with this weapon, you can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to gain a number of temporary hit points equal to your character level.

I know im late but I don't think people get the point of the Sword of Zariel. It forces your character to take on an entirely new persona in exchange for so many benefits. The sword essentially turns you into Zariel and gives way to so many story lines, like a character seeking to return to themselves and come to the heart break realization they can never be who they once were. Maybe if the sword is sentient it's strong desire to be reunited with Zariel it turned you into her as if to ease it's loneliness and feeling of abandonment. The sword isn't meant to be a free powerful magic item, it's meant to be a story hook and a strong one at that.

Magic Weapon. The Blade of Avernus is a magic weapon that functions as a vorpal sword.
Random Properties. The sword has the following randomly determined properties, as described in chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide:
      2 minor beneficial properties
      1 major beneficial property
1 major detrimental property, which is suppressed while the sword is attuned to an archdevil
Ruler of Avernus. As an action, you can point this sword at one devil you can see within 60 feet of you. That devil must succeed on a DC 22 Charisma saving throw or be charmed by you for 1 hour. While charmed in this way, the devil follows your orders to the best of its ability. If you command the devil to do something it perceives as suicidal, the effect ends and you can no longer use this power of the sword against that devil.
Infernal Recall. As an action, you can use the sword to cast word of recall. Creatures transported by this spell appear in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of the current ruler of Avernus, or a sanctuary you designate if you rule Avernus.
Destroying the Sword. The sword can be destroyed by casting it into the River Styx or melting it down in the forge that created it.

Some random demon drops her into the river and, Whoopsie, no more blade. Legendary and artifact weapons usually are far harder to destroy than that. Something like, " Immersing it in holy water for a year before taking it out and casting it into the River Styx while Wishing (spell) for it's destruction" seems more like what it would take. It would also give her time to hunt down and murderize the fools who dared to take her weapon and Symbol of Office from her.

There are good reason people use weapons over our hands and why a punch only does one hit point for anyone else but monks. Weapons are force multipliers, you can punch the dragon but don't act like the spear of dragon slaying i handed to you was meant for the fighter with the vorpal longsword.

dittmar104 yes weapons are cool and in real life are more effective than unarmed strikes (realistically gunslingers would be the only nonmage class played), but the monk class is based around martial arts and unarmed strikes. Especially in the case of open hand monks whose abilities trigger on unarmed strikes and thus can't make much use out of a flameblade. Not to mention that the flavor of the monk class is what makes it so charming. So wanting a magic item that enhances that flavor is fully justified I believe. And it's not like other classes don't already have magic items unique to them (holy avenger). As for your reply. I agree, there are a lot of unique and fun builds monks can have. There is a whole archtype for monks that use weapons instead of fists. Hell if a player wanted to play a monk who uses gunkata I would be totally down for that. So given that monks are so versatile why is it bad to have magic items that support those players that DO want to play that guy that punches dragons to death.

      @dittmar104 5 лет назад +1

@@vermillionwraith7810 The monk class is built around ki and mobility, ki works *with* your monk weapons for stunning strike. I see unarmed strike as a nice bonus action it's not a class or subclass defining feature, and you're better off treating it as a bonus action most of the time based on damage die. And well really The Way of The Open Hand is built for fury of blows which you can still do after attacking with a flame tongue. It only has one ability that specifies unarmed attack over fury of blows and it's at 17th level. I acknowledge that monks flavour comes from martial arts, but martial arts included weapons for good reasons and I believe that should be reflected in the game world like other real world reasoning we include in our games.
(Also Gun kata is a sick. kensi monk hand crossbow 6, ranger 4, kensi the rest of the way and maybe a little war priest.)
Less from a flavour perspective powering up unarmed strike is multiplicative. Knuckle dusters with any pluses eg +1 or additional damage die like 1d6 lightning on a level 5 monk now add +1 to FOUR attacks and level 5 or 4d6. This undermines fighters- especially because monks get crazy shit like unarmored defense, deflect missiles and patient defense on top of fury of blows and their subclass feature/s, wile fighters have things like one second wind, a fighting style, subclass and one use of action surge.
I'm not saying people can't play how they want to play. But if they play a weird obscene or obscure build like two shields, low dex not armor on a fighter or deiced "Hey I don't want to use weapons to kill things. I'll just punch the dragon in the face." They shouldn't expect to find items that bolster their very specific, fun yet comical play style.

Honestly, most of these items are wack (like pretty much all magic items in dnd) they are either way too situational, way too costly or way too powerful with no in between. Also, it took dnd this long just to introduce a fire sword into the game (flaming swords are an old staple of fantasy, they're practically biblical), and when they finally do, it can only be used once per dawn.

@@spiritandsteel I stand corrected abou the fire sword thing. I still think most of the magic items in dnd are wack. Does anyone else have examples of items that are cool but not over-powerd for for mid to high level play?

@@irontemplar6222 I don't believe magic items are under-powered. At least I can't think of one that seems underpowered for a high level item.
Sure it'd be cool if they did more but 5e was made so you can play from 1 to 20 with no magic items. Your party will probably die a few times each but thats dnd. It really depends what you're trying to do as to how powerful you can make an otherwise underwhelming effect (like the defender, rather shit if you get it as a greatsword but on a short sword and its best offhand weapon in the game). Team synergy and cooperation go a long way to meeting cr. Sure my paladin could cast holy weapon on his sword but your fighter makes more attacks. Sure bobby could cast shield of faith on himself with his 21 ac or give it to the wizard who's counterspelling the hold persons coming at bobby's face and getting sniped.

@@dittmar104 I was more pointing out to the guy above that their are very few to none "over powered" magic items at high level.
The only 3 magic items that are close to being OP at high level is
Holy Avenger (which is restricted to paladin, and really the only magic item they get that is ment for them)
Vorpal weapons (which only matter on a roll of a 20, and if your opponent dosnt have regeneration)
Moon blade (you must be an elf, and you must get lucky with its creation, and its sentiant so hope you get along with it)
Other than those. Eh their are ones that are good no doubt but for high levels they are hardly OP.
