The things I hope for in this book (even if they aren't likely): 1. A proper rule system for Planeswalking. 2. New spells and magic items. 3. That the colleges as backgrounds, not classes. I was not a fan of them as shared subclasses as it felt SUPER clunky. Also Bards not being in Prismari and Artificers being snubbed didn't help. 4. The Owlin race. (Obvious one, since one is featured on the standard cover). 5. Gyome getting a nod in the Witherbloom chapter. 6. An Academia system since players would generally be students. 7. Advice for student mentors that represent the dichotomy within each of the colleges. 8. Official Mage Tower rules. 9. The Oriq being involved in the introductory adventure. 10. Stat blocks for the Founding Dragons.
Amy and Michael are so fun. I love this fun way of exploring the setting as a character "planning a vacation" I am pumped for this book! The MTG books are some of the best 5e books!
As a genetics major, I'd totally double-major in Witherbloom and Quandrix to magically recode organisms. In particular, dissecting and altering the Polymorph spell.
I absolutely love all of these wonderful colleges, but if they were to be used in a campaign, how would the party decide what to go with? I understand that maybe a adventure hook or even just a coin flip would suffice for choosing a college for the party to explore for the time, but it seems like, to get the most out of this for each player, many players would go their own ways and just meet up periodically. I'm not an extremely experienced DM, so I'm just perplexed at how this would work out going into a campaign.
I could see it treated like “due to this threat, the colleges need to combine their specialties” and roll with that in a ton of different ways. You wouldn’t even have to do that if you didn’t want to. Harry Potter has students from different schools in class with one another all the time. Same thing with real life universities. Wildly different majors can still have classes in common.
I won't take this Lorehold slander!! Lorehold parties are seances with wild party spirits, exploring old cave systems to get into sick af crystal cavern grotto parties and playing with ancient artifacts that grant wishes for five story water slides into pools of cherry jello!!
I know I'm late to the party but I'm super happy to see UG get some more love besides whatever poorly thought out mess Simic is supposed to be. Biological magic is lame, imaginary numbers is where its at.
