    What I like is how the campaign is plotted over a 4 year period and expects a lot of down time. It's refreshing to see a campaign that's not your PC gets from level 1 to 10 in a month of in game time.

    • @TheDungeonCoach
      @TheDungeonCoach  2 года назад +3

      YES I love that too! your garunteed to go across FOUR YEARS, which is longer "in game time" than most ANY campaigns lol

    The fact that there are only 5 spells really irks me. It's a book about a magic school where people go to learn magic, and they only have 5 spells.

      5 NEW spells.. what they could've done is make faction specific spells, that would've been cool..

  • @koposart1489
    @koposart1489 2 года назад +6

    I could see adding some of those mechanics into downtime in other games, spend a specific period of days in a library reading, have d4 for an intelligence check to use once per long rest. It would definitely encourage downtime! Or just for specific research topics, so going to research dragons gives an extra d4 on a dragon check per long rest.

  • @gamelofdemenor8228
    @gamelofdemenor8228 2 года назад +1

    Regarding the spells, i think instead of making a ton of repetitive spells for each school, it would be cool to be able to upgrade and change your 1 spell depending on what classes you pick (for example, for Witherbloom you could have a toxins class which (when you pass) lets you add 1D4 poison damage to their Wither and Bloom spell. Or for Quandrix you could have an ethereal plane class which lets you grant invisibility for a little while to the person you teleport with their Vortex Warp spell.

    Looking into using Candlekeep Mysteries (now Biblioplex Mysteries) to beef up the Strixhaven storyline, so there isn't *too* much downtime... now the PCs gotta choose between studying or solving mysteries a la the Scooby Gang

      @gnznhsr 2 года назад +1

      Wow this is genius, thank you! I will try to sneak in the 1st adventure from candlekeep as soon as my players defeat the mimic and head to the library to do some research on it or when they want to find books for their exams.

    I have actually been planning a Campaign around a 'Arcane School', which I hope to start next month... So Strixhaven was a good way to see what the D&D designers thought in that vein. I actually have already named a school in each of several nations and nation states, though my campaign will be an independent one. Though my Campaign world is heavily altered from basic D&D. I'm adapting several ideas from here, rather than reinventing the wheel for certain things such as studying, report cards, punishments, relationships, etc.

    7:30 The collages of magic in Nocturne. Nocturne is a mageocracy and part of the league of Bracellas where every city is a mageocracy. There are at least five mayor cities in the league so atleast five magical collages each with a subdepartment for each of the schools of magic.

    I remember seeing the UA subclasses made for each of the different colleges of Strixhaven and thought they were really cool...and I was disappointed when when they flat out scrapped and never made it in. I don't care what other people think, those college subclasses were extremely innovative and NEEDED to be added. To be able to go all in on your chosen college via your subclass is a big missed opportunity. It could've possibly opened doors for similar subclasses for martial classes. But, it wasn't meant to be. :(

    A copper dragon who founded a theives guild and has run it for a century. This particular copper dragon would be a young dragon that got board had a small hoard and decided to get others to grow it for him he/she is CN, with higher dex and intelligence then normal. If he is the antagonist he can be convinced to stop what hes doing. He loves books and they are the most tressured part of his hoard. The theives guild is known as The Letter Theives or The Academics.

    I've been catching up with your videos and I'm really impressed with the high quality materials of homebrew you have. I already used some a while ago and now I now where it came from!
    I had a blast with the videos with Luke from Dm lair and rralized I have players with background\backstory problems.
    Since you commented again in this videos, will you be talking more about it in the future? Deep into your homebrew in BACKGROUNDS?

    There's a very simple solution to nerf flying PC races if you absolutely feel like you need to nerf flyers.
    1. Pick up Guildmaster's guide to Ravnica.
    2. Flip to the races chapter.
    3. Read the abilities you can pick from as a Simic Hybrid.
    4. Give your flyers Manta Glide until they hit level 3 or 4.
    By level 5 the full casters can fly. All the PC races that grant flight have next to no other benefits. A claw attack for aaracockra. Drow darkvision for the owlin. It's not a real problem for them to have 24/7 flight at level 5 if that's literally the only thing their race pick gives them. Halfling and all the races that give two skill proficiencies, natural armor, or spells are objectively better in almost all situations.
    Really though, if a player wants to play a flyer that means one thing. You as the DM are free to add "archers" to every encounter and add a Z axis to every single battlefield. Things you probably should be doing anyway.

    I like how the bane you described is a role play feature. I imagine the character coming up and asking this npc for advice and the npc responds, "Begone, fowl dragon of the most strangling swamps!" And if the characters keeps trying to ask the questions the npc could lean further into it, "If you persist any longer, I shall vanquish you!" It would be awesome to have a giant list of things to help a dm give to various types of npcs. We already have the friendly to enemy npc attitude system but very little of anything to help us actually benefit or be a detriment to the players based on their attitudes toward them.

    Hey coach, as I watch this I am think about the comment I left on your dc20 video about worlds. Instead of a set campaign world maybe a campaign building outline or guidelines?
    That would be more in line with what you are all about homebrew! Making it your own
    Good video thanks

    This book sounds pretty niche. Characters are still in school at 9-10th level? What level are the instructors? In my campaign that has magic schools, they train up young wizards and mages to 1st level. If I were to do a wizard school campaign, I'd break the wizard down to 4 sub-levels, with students not having unlimited use of their cantrips, or their whole complement of them, starting off.
    Also, I agree that only 5 spells sounds paltry. This is a campaign book more than a sourcebook. If you want to run a Harry Potter style campaign where wizards come out of school very powerful, this may fit the ticket. If you wanted a book to plug into an existing campaign - meh.

    The way you say you use backgrounds sounds like the way backgrounds were intended to be used. Certain proficiencies, and a minor feat that makes sense with your backstory. Maybe you feel that the printed backgrounds are limiting and thats why you think you dont like them but the printed backgrounds are just examples/inspiration for your character. The system you described using still sounds like RAI if not just plain RAW

      There are moments where you gain these points and can spend them in the story too, so I never saw SPECIFIC moments when to spend them, that is something Ill have to dive into myself, beacuse I agree that there should be more to it that get a point and spend a point on someone

    My rating for Strixhaven still stands at a 1. There isn't much I can take from it that makes it worth the cover price. I'm very disappointed in how few spells there were in this book. Aside from it lacking in almost every way, the very least they could have done was given us a new treasure trove of spells. But seeing how broken spells like silvery barbs is, perhaps it is best that they didn't give us a bunch of new spells.

    The book was marketed and sold as a sourcebook but was hot-swapped to be an adventure book. I was very disappointed especially with the paltry offering of items and magic. It really harmed my view of WOTC and ill probably refrain from pre-ordering anything from them again to avoid wasting 30 bucks on smthg ill never use now b/c it's an adventure, not a sourcebook. They really messed up b/c the other MTG books were sourcebooks that are crazy good and now it's a trash adventure book barely anyone will run. PPL wanted the ability to put a magic school in their world not some stupid adventure with unique items and shit. Overall 1/10 would never recommend pre-ordering WOTC stuff after this, massive disappointment and damaging towards my opinion of WOTC.

  • @henriquessmil

    A sugestion about the wings problem, my solution was making the wings a magical ability, I make kenkus and aarakocra the same race in my setting (using each as subrace), and they can transform their arms in wings as a action a number of times equal to their proficiency bonus per long rest, that transformation is active for 1 minute and gives you a fliyng speed equal to your walking speed. While transformed you cant use weapons or cast spells tha require somantic components, becouse your arms are now your wings, BUT, as I mention that Kenkus and Aarakocra are the same race you keep your Talons Atack, an ability that you can use while flying.
    If you're on air when your transformation ends you fall, but if you have another use you can use your reaction to reactivate the ability.
    This "nerf" really improve the flying problem of my party, because players become afraid to use their flying ability in the wrong time and being incapable to fly in times of need. Also as a magic ability you cant use in areas maded by the anti-magic field spell.

    • @nicksternyr8728
      @nicksternyr8728 2 года назад

      Kinda also made the player completely useless in battle. So you told your player you can only use this in very limited instances so basically don't pick this race. Thats not a fix but a punishment, I'm sorry just say those races don't exist in your world

    • @henriquessmil
      @henriquessmil 2 года назад

      @@nicksternyr8728 is not a punishment if it works, maybe it is for your table but in mine worked really fine and the Avenar (name of the homebrew race) player liked the change, also he is really creative in combat, he is strong as fuck so as a action he drags and drop enemys fron the sky in combat as easy, with an atack from its talons he can forgo dealing damage to instead drag the creature in the air using the grappling rules and the "push, drag and lift weigh" rules.
      Its okay if don't work for you, my table is not hyper combat focused, so for them it worked, BUT, if some of my players feel kinda useless in combat I can make an racial ability to allow them to shoot feathers as a ranged weapons, and even using the rules for ranged weapons of The Dungeon Coach, everything is cool if you talk to your players.
