    The moment you mentioned that there were only two subclasses...I was a bit miffed. They had a PERFECT opportunity to either revamp Draconic Sorcerer to include the Gem Dragon options as well as...personally, just give it more flair. I'd honestly love if a revamped Draconic Sorcerer had a feature that allowed for the unique breath weapon options from your ancestor when casting Dragon's Breath. There were many chances to revamp it but they didn't. Still waiting on Dragon based Warlocks and Wizards too.

      I’d like a revamped sorcerer too, but we know how WotC hates updating old stuff. As wizards, I think they have enough going for them as it is.

    I’m actually stunned it took so long to create this book … I mean it’s Dungeons & Dragons … and we’re just now getting this ? Don’t get me wrong , I’m super excited for this book but it almost feels like a “Draconomicon” should be the 4th core rule book… a necessity if you will. Not meaning to sound negative at all… The book looks AMAZING… that alt cover is pretty bad ass… can’t wait to have it in the collection…
    Definitely throw some extensive dragon home brew stuff at us … there is no limit when it comes to these game defining creatures

    If i remember it right, there is another name for a group of dragons. One that i find quite fitting, because it describes the only reason for all dragons to truely work together!
    The Rage of Dragons
    because when something collectively threatens all of dragon kind, they team up to become an unstoppable force, and destroy everything in their path.

    Definitely a missed opportunity for some more subclasses, Warlock feels like a given, but this seems to be an amazing resource for GMs. Not only for dragons, but as inspiration of how we can think of other big monsters!

  • @ClassesandConstructs
    @ClassesandConstructs 2 года назад +11

    This was awesome! Happy to catch it so early.
    I couldn't agree more with the QoL improvements to the breath weapon. And the magic items that "scale" are awesome, I can't wait to see them once I get my copy.
    I also wish there were more dragon subclasses. It feels like everyone is going to homebrew additional subclasses given what's missing from this book. It's good inspiration, but it's sad WotC didn't just go all the way with the subclasses.

    • @nulllex0099
      @nulllex0099 2 года назад +2

      It's understandable, though. Books not specifically about subclasses only have two, normally.
      That said, we all are most definitely making dragon subclasses, and the fact they didn't officially make a dragonic pact warlock all to make a cool monk and make them shit again, is a fucking travesty.

    • @ClassesandConstructs
      @ClassesandConstructs 2 года назад

      @@nulllex0099 yeah this makes a lot of sense. I get that it's normal to stick with two in books like this, but I think it would have just felt special to do more. Especially given how iconic dragons are.
      Also, couldn't agree more about the ones they chose, some classes could have used love like the warlock.
      With Ranger and Monk covered I want to see the rest. Maybe I'll start homebrewing too.

    Is the issue with Dragonborns only scalability? Because I'm DMing a campaign with a currently level 1 PC and I'd say the breath weapon is quite a powerful tool. It's basically a good attacking bonus spell and when you've only got 2 spell slots another attacking option at the same level really makes synergizes well.

    • @demonsmafia
      @demonsmafia 2 года назад +9

      It’s strong at early levels (1-3) but it doesn’t scale well at later levels and many who optimize their actions would never chose it at something else. Especially at level 15 and beyond. Now that it scales it will most likely still be used a later levels.

    For a home brew game I let a paladin break his oath and become a paladin of Eldenser (an Amethyst dragon) and the dragon became the party’s patron. It was a cool twist for them to have a powerful patron with mysterious objectives. This book will help me put some more stuff in their game for them to get and do.

    My friends and I did a Homebrew Dragon Domain Cleric based off of the 3.5 one. A Tiamat Cleric’s channel Divinity works off of a Charge system. Half Proficiency multiplied by standard Channel divinity uses. Expend charges (up to 5) to exhale an elemental torrent of the chromatic element you attuned to at the end of your last Long Rest. Additional charges conjure the spectral head of additional chromatic dragons to add to the breath attack. If you’re at the point where you have 5 charges available, you can use them AND your Divine Intervention to summon the Five Headed Breath of Tiamat herself. Doing this comes at the cost of dealing Half the Average damage to yourself and adding 2 levels of exhaustion.

    One of my favorite parts of dnd lore (aside from the abyss) is dragons. This video has definitely sold me on the book. Though I wonder if it has older, more obscure dragon's. Like yellow, orange, brown, gray and/or purple dragons? It would be cool to see a 5e adaptation of a hellfire drake (in dnd lore is a red dragon in hell or has some influence of hell's power in it). Or even the biggest and one of the strongest dragon's in dnd lore, the prismatic dragons.
    Regardless, I am going to be purchasing this book!! Although not a true-dragon, a 5e conversion for abyssal drakes would be cool.

    Haters complain about this book for a lack of player options, but that's because this book isn't /for/ players. It's for dungeon masters. It hits the ground running with dragonsight, and turns it into a timeless classic with the Draconomicon.

  • @elmsigreen
    @elmsigreen 2 года назад

    I think the Dragon subclass for Ranger can be easily homebrewed a little bit to fit most other classes. Instead of getting your normal subclass features, you get the Ranger's dragon companion (could probably also work with the beast companion). There are probably already a BUNCH of ways to break this but if a player came up to me and wanted to play this subclass but for some reason hates Rangers, I'd gladly do it. Imagine a Barbarian whose former party was killed by a dragon but he survived and killed the weakened dragon himself. BUT he then discovers that the dragon was just protecting it's egg so now the Barbarian feels he has to raise the baby himself.

    I think I need to get this book for my Dragons of Neverwinter campaign. It is a campaign that I am building that combines the published adventures Dragon of Icespire Peak, Storm Lord's Wrath, Sleeping Dragons Wake, and Divine Contention with some homebrew ideas that I want to throw in about fighting all types of Dragons in the area outside the city of Neverwinter in the Forgotten Realms.
    Really looking forward to this.
    I am disappointed that they didn't upgrade the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer. That subclass Needs an expanded spell list.

    Time out! When I heard the explanation of dragon sight I thought it was a way to canonise dnd game crossovers.
    By acknowledging a multi verse there is now a way to merge popular dnd streams.
    This is also how I imagine Dream of the Blue Veil being used.

    Not a dragonborn fan - I don't have them in my campaign worlds. I do like the Ranger subclass.
    I'm torn on the whole echoes thing. It seems a bit out there, but then again the characters in one of my campaigns slew a dragon who had been the recipient of annual sacrifices from a kingdom, making them big-time heroes. It might be interesting to have a couple echoes of Frostblight show up to avenge their analog.

    Got this for Christmas.
    Best WotC book since the core books (1st Edition).
    Lots of stats and charts and lists.
    I've been wondering when they were gonna follow up on the first adventures in 5e.
    Its not all usable in a long standing game world, but it is light and quick, like the DMG and PHB.
    The color text is kept to a minimum. The dragons have been differentiated a little better than the original MM versions.
    Everythin included to run a full on dragon world. They've even reskinned the goblinoids as dragonoids, to give us stepped levels of dragonish foes at various CR ratings. This reminds me of the 3e monster focused books like the ones on Beholders and Mind Flayers.

    Couple years ago I ran a campaign in a homebrew setting called Aldra. Reeeeeally wish I’d had this book back then. Aldra was a cheeky portmanteau for All Dragons. The world was being overrun by them and the elder dragons had to turn to lesser races for help in controlling the population.
    Secret: the elder dragons had created the problem by trying to break the cycle of reincarnation they were trapped in. Binding the fertility god so they could create half dragons, which eventually spawned the dragonborn race and a civil war between the dragonborn and their progenitors. I loved it but creating names and personalities for so many dragons was taxing.

    They didn't give every class a dragon-themed subclass for the same reason each class doesn't have an underwater version: if everybody could do it, it's not very special. Sure, they could've done 1 or maybe 2 more subclasses, but I personally don't find it necessary.

    • @TheDragonSwordsman

      I don't agree with this. They have done a dragon theme for every class in previous editions. Plus, big things like "dragon" in "dungeons and Dragons" should def have plenty of representation.

    I haven't been looking forward to this book. I'm not really a fan of a book full of options for something (a dragon) that you would usually use only one or two of in a campaign.
    Like, I see this and I want to use all of the options.
    I might have to do a campaign about a Second 1000 Year War where all the Dragons are fighting all the Giants. A level 8 through 20 campaign.
    Maybe.

    Dragon sight is quantum awareness? Eww. That's just obnoxious, I don't want to take that into account while world building.

  • @MrTazingo

    They're messing with the lore though turning the old draconic pantheon into chumps.
    There usually is a bit of an ecology introduction explaining the behaviour of your typical chromatic and metallic dragon but now it's just roll for personality.
    Chromatics can be good if you roll a d6 and it lands on a 6. Kind of a lazy cop out.
    This book feels like the writers who wrote it don't really care about older d&d editions.
    I like the echoes bit and how dragons can transform into greatwyrms though.

  • @nulllex0099
    @nulllex0099 2 года назад

    To keep it simple, chromatic and metallic dragons are natural spellcasters (as in, they literally had sorcerer levels naturally) while gem dragons are psionics. Really, the fact the psionics are being used to imitate some spells is kinda hilarious.
    As for the subclasses, I AM gonna keep bitching about what a waste the monk was; sooooo many people wanted a fucking legitimate dragon Warlock! And they cop out of it with a meagre planar dragons (which they decided to leave out of 5e BTW!), and for what?! UA AD Monk is cool, the official print fucking sucks!
    Aaaaah. I love monks, and they get it worse than what people think rangers get.
    Speaking of rangers, WotC, FFS, why lock the whole Dragon Rider fantasy behind 15 BLOODY LEVELS of game?! I can be an arakroka drake warden, flight isn't that fucking good, let me fly at lvl 7, come on.

    Gem dragon images in this book suck... in overall this book has the ugliest drawings among all the dnd 5th e books... im not impressed by the content either... it is full of useless and ugly maps of the dragon lairs... poor images as well as graphics , full of inconsistencies such as the draconians that can be born from corrupted eggs of dragons of all kind not the way it was explained in PHB and literally everywhere that they only originated by corrupting eggs of metallic dragons only... auraks (gold), baaz (brass), bozak (bronze), kapak (copper) and sivak (silver)... where are these? Dragons and dragonlike creatures' textboxes are poorly created... paladin and tiamat stats are ridiculously simplyfied.... and go on...im rather unstisfied with this book and feel regret to have bought it....😢

    1:15 Yeah yuck. Multiverses are so overdone. It was cool when star trek did it in the 60s. It was an intresting take on a cliché when Stargate did it in the 90s. Today its just cliché.
