- Dwarven Forge: shop.dwarvenforge.com/?... The greatest minds in the multiverse meet at Strixhaven University. Professors convey fantastic secrets to eager students, and life on campus is frenetic. But danger lurks even here. Campus hijinks mix with mishaps and sinister plots, and it’s up to you to save the day.
Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos introduces the fantastical setting of Strixhaven University to Dungeons & Dragons, drawn from the multiverse of Magic: The Gathering. It also provides rules for creating characters who are students in one of its five colleges.
Characters can explore the setting over the course of four adventures, which can be played together or on their own. Each describes an academic year filled with scholarly pursuits, campus shenanigans, exciting friendships, hidden dangers, and perhaps even romance.
• Includes four brand new D&D adventures that can be played as stand-alones or woven together as a campaign from levels 1-10
• Adds a new playable race-an owlin, one of the owlfolk who study at the university
• Includes a bestiary of over forty magical creatures and NPCs
• Experience D&D in new ways through the academic challenges, extracurricular activities and jobs, and relationships explored on campus
• Includes a beautifully illustrated double-sided poster map that shows Strixhaven’s campus on one side and important locations on the other
• Attend an elite mage university, choose your college, and adventure your way to graduation
• Adds new player character options including feats and new backgrounds for first-year students at Strixhaven - Игры
Very happy they remembered to add stuff for the artificer! Gotta have some wanna be inventors!
Or Ollivander.
i agree
POV: you walk in your first day of aberration class and your teacher is a beholder
That is a MUST
Given the number of Beholders who die to adventurers, it makes sense to train adventurers to thin competion.
"Outrageously negligent?" I don;'t think I have laughed that hard in a while.
I could listen to Jeremy Crawford talking about Strixhaven all day. I am really lookin forward to run a magic university campaign. Great content, Todd!
Feels like the perfect campaign to play a big dumb Barbarian who is going to school to learn how to kill mages.
Little did they know i'm gonna be a janitor in Strixhaven!!! HAHAHAHA
I just had a homebrew idea! for Strixhaven that is! Like lets say your a fighter for Witherbloom, so they gave you a bracelet to use the spells.
Eldritch Knight? Rune Knight? are magical versions of the city guard class
Okay, this seals it. I am even more excited for this book. I came up with some homebrew backgrounds for STX inspired by how the Ravnica and Theros books work and this sounds in line with what I homebrewed. So. Jazzed.
Feels like they are emphasizing Backgrounds as they de-emphasize Race in terms of mechanics. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the "5.5" update.
That is gonna suck. Races should be emphasized its a key part of a character. 1 of 3
Idk where this sentiment comes from. Races have begun to become stronger with better more solid features to separate them from others in order to replace ASIs being what defines a race.
@@trappyboi8678 not having abis is dumb it removes a lair of actual choice. I wish they would at least give the option for those who wants it
What do you mean? The ASI stats are still there. You just get the option to move them where you want.
@@Rj-pw7zs no see its only fun if you have to pick a certain race to play a class optimally /s
This one was particularly fun to watch. I wasn't really planning on picking up Strixhaven, but given the energy and enthusiasm I picked up from Todd and Jeremy's conversation (interview?), I've changed my mind and am going to get this one, after all. Also, that comment about putting a pin in those previous Unearthed Arcana releases... Hmm... Some good food for thought there.
Same here.
Also my inner power gamer is just thinking of what fun a bladesinger could have with an attacking/space-swapping familiar.
D&D already did Magic schools, not just in Dragonlance, but much more detailed in "The Principalities of Glantri" for Mystara and AD&D's College of Magic. I recommend both for those who are interested in running a game like this with Strixhaven or in any other setting.
Mystara also has Owlfolk btw, called Hsiao :)
This for 5e, though!
@@genghisgalahad8465
Yes but hes saying it might fit more naturally to revive some older d&d content for a magic school rather than do a crossover
Which i think is a valid critcism
D and d also had Redhurst
@@genghisgalahad8465 Looking at older books in general (mostly 3E), they were way, way, way more detailed than what we get now. I highly recommend cross-referencing older material in every capacity
Even if the rest of the book was hot garbage I'd still buy it for the dating sim portion
I got it for the sole reason that I am a god damned completionist...
The Fire Emblem mentality in full force
The Fire Emblem experience, with magic, dragons and all.
That's sad
The bard can truly shine here
The Magicians has Magic University.
Brakebills!
12:06 Given Hobgoblins are present in Dragonlance, and we got Fizban's draconians... Has Jeremy teased Dragonlance setting for 5E/5.5E? The plot thickens!
BTW Todd, your interviews are fire, I love your content fiercely, keep up the good work!
Hob and Kobold are going to be in the monsters of the multiverse book as retrains.
Witch Hat Atelier is such an amazing series. The art and the characters and the magic system is such a huge inspiration for me as a writer and as a DM
I am very excited for more Feats, especially the improved Familiar Feat. I do wish there was a generic Improved Familiar Feat in the game. I will say I am a tiny bit disappointed we are not getting more spells. 5 spells seems so few, I wish we got 10. I worry it will feel like Fizban's in that it gave a little of everything but not enough of it.
I second the generic Improved Familiar feat request. 🙋🏼♂️
Jeremy thank you for mentioning Witch Hat Atelier. Folks need to check that manga out. I really want to see an anime version of it; I don't think KyoAni would do it, but WiT or PA Works would be great.
Agreed!! And actually, I don’t know which studio but an anime project was recently announced for 2022 for witch hat atelier!
@@stormraven1730 It looks like a new domain name has been registered, which is the first step for something beyond just the publishing of the books. Could be a game, could be an anime, or a specific line of merchandise.
This will be great mixing with 5 color mana spell point variant rules. Can't wait!
Where are those introduced? And are they to add MTG's magic logic to D&D?
I miss the strixhaven subclasses from UA, tho. This subclasses were so cool that instantly wanted to play 4 of those 5.
Agreed.
I love owls, so I can't wait to play an Owlin!
same i have been play testing the owlin ua for months and i love it so much
the fact that people dont know about Raistlin, Fizban amd Lord Soth is Borderline criminal on wizards part!
Hunger Games overhearing 'Young Children going on Deadly Adventures'... "Yes, that sounds perfect. What could we do more?"
Oh damn, witch hat is getting some love. That's amazing = ^ - ^ =
When I heard about the skating competition thing in another video about Strixhaven, the only image I got in my head was of magical roller disco 🤣🕺🏻💃🏻
I literally just preordered this boo today! So excited!
Thanks for these interviews.
11:40 Crawford didn't mention the Kobold from the Dragon UA at all. Oh well R.I.P. new Kobold. We knew too little.
The UA kobold was utter crap honestly. it was a complete reversal change to the classic kobold to the point they were barely a kobold in mechanics. I'm glad it's gone, and I'm happy with the Volo's version.
Well its still possible that the alt. Kobold will be in the same release as the alt. Hobgoblin, maybe they thought it still needed work or maybe there's a different book that it would be more appropriate for
Curriculum of Chaos……best band name EVER.
Every non caster class needs a 1/3 spell casting subclass Monk even Barbarian which can use spells slots like paladins but not for damage but for added effects to attacks when they are raging. Because, magic adds o lot of fun to non caster and gives extra options and utility and now the feat, races, and even backgrounds gives extra spells. Feels bad that you can’t play your favorite class with this type of flavor with out multi classing. The 4e monk and fey wild barbarian don’t cut it, I mean as more books come out classes and subclass with spell lot get better with more options, when was the last time they added more elements power to the 4e monk or way to add more power as the books come out, fey and shadow touch are cool but after the free use per day their no option to spend ki to recast it as with spell slots. We need 1/3 caster for every non caster class with fun magical ability like the fighter and rouge.
We did it boys, barbarian casters
I'm making a janitor character that has learned magic by watching students do spells.
It's like Unseen Academy got Potterized.
a college-age magic university is literally the basis for the Magicians, also known as one of the greatest shows of all time
Thank you Todd. I am looking forward to Strixhaven, I have found that the MTG crossovers often are some of my favorite 5e products because they look at things from a new perspective.
Talk about the best background ever
So this means i might still get the UA artificer subclass the mechanist in a future book!
and the UA kobold from draconic options
I like that they made stryxhaven initiate into a feat. Especially if you want to play a 1st year who hasn’t yet decided their college.
Based on the first few minutes Jeremy has never watched/read the magicians xD
I think he has. He mentions that there are YA magic schools, just not in gaming.
But part of the appeal of The Magicians is that it was one of the few. At least for me
In any case, we have the ability to make this lighter than The Magicians, and that's too good a possibility to pass up.
DM OPTIONS! that's what we need
COOOOOLLLL (looking respectfully at echo night hello)
Diane Duane wrote some great magical school novels that don't get enough credit.
The Hobgoblin of the Feywild is so good, and I hope it isn't nerfed too much. Maybe a little. But not too much.
Them including Adventures like this is perfect. When wanting to set up a long term campaign in MTG worlds, having adventures that can be run sequentially or in pieces is amazing.
Was audio cut off at beginning? Seems like video started in the middle of conversation
Lev Grossman's Magicians series is a great example. And not young adult. Both the series and the novels are good.
I kind of expected a prerequisite to do Strixhaven as a campaign would be that players had to have at least one spell slot.
So many great things coming out with amazing ideas. Also I want my hobgoblin purple dragon knight please.
Isnt Hobgoblin a PC in Volo's Guide? And Purple Dragon Knight is in Sword Coast Adventures.
@@ianbraun271 I should be more specific, I am looking for the Fae Wild Hobgoblin. Help with a bonus action plus additional benefits.
The more I hear about the Strixhaven book, the more if feels like an expansion for The Sims rather than D&D.
I mean in a way the sims can be played/referred as an rpg
There’s hope for the new Kobold!!
So Strixhaven is closer to the school side of the Clock Tower in the nasuverse? got it.
So, ho here is my room buddy from Silverquil?
There is hope for the new kobold in a future book!
Did he just tease another book? Now I need a list of all the UA from this year that has unpublished material
Kobold UA, Fey Hobgoblin, and the Travelers of the Multiverse are all there are from this year that hasn’t seen publish yet
@@deadpoolrwbyfan8419 hmmmm. Pretty sure kobold is gonna be reprinted in the Multiverse book. It'd be weird to throw the hobgoblins in that book but maybe?
@@Logan-ef8hq They're not too different from the Volo's version of those races, so these could easily be scouting flavor adjustment to the existing versions.
They could also be shadow tests for non-Goblin/Kobold races for unannounced, even new, settings.
On another note, I think there's a fair chance Thri-Keen won't end up in a Spelljammer or Multiverse book.
@@egrettacaerulea I could maybe see that. I know some people are worried about Wizards not publishing Dark Sun because of the darker themes. I figured this book wod be an easy way for them to add Thri kreen without having to fully publish Dark Sun
To me this screams a game set in the world of The Magicians. Fillory is just a Domain of Delight.
Besides the Hobgoblin is there anything else from UA that I’m forgetting about that hasn’t been released yet. And I’m excluding the most recent UA with the Giff and other fun planar beings
It's not hard to figure out that the UA Kobold and Hobgoblin are for Mordenkainen's Presents: Monster's of the Multiverse.
Good idea with the feat instead of the mess that was the subclass choices. They seemed like nightmare for those using digital character sheets. Not a huge fan of MtG anymore, but would be interesting to play in a Strixhaven setting.
12:43 "People loved the Owlfolk in UA and has made it into the book in a form very close to how it appeared in UA."
LIES! - No Nimble Flight to stop yourself from falling. No Magic Sight to cast Detect Magic as a ritual. Flying Speed was reduced from 'equal to walking speed' to 30 (no matter what) AND they added the Aarakocra weakness of not being able to wear medium or heavy armor if flying.
Owlin isn't anything like the UA Owlfolk... it's more like an Aarakocra 1.5
For me, Todd is the official source for D&D info. 👍
I'm so glad that an actual WotC designer mentioned a Japanese works as an inspiration.
One of my ambitions is to bring D&D's Japanese support back, this just gave me another piece of determination to carry out my plan.
I'm really looking forward 2 this book \(^o^)/!!!!
Oh great, Ravnica backgrounds 2.0 but also an option to take them as a feat. /s
College of winterhold
This feels very Kingkiller and I love it.
The Magicians? No? No one? Weird.
I would have preferred the subclasses if I was honest instead of a feat slot or a background
Do you mean the subclasses as they had them in UA? Where they were subclasses that were shared between classes?
TBH I thought that was really cool and unique. I'm quite sad that the community shot it down.
@@slothmoth2389 I think class-agnostic subclasses are a great idea. The implementation in the UA was poor. The idea is sound, just needs to be refined
@@slothmoth2389 Yeah those subclasses I even would have been fine if they just limited the subclasses to one particular spellcaster class each since some felt more favored to one particular class
It really was a seriously underrated UA. Admittedly janky in more than a few areas, but that's to be expected with playtest material.
@@fritzthelibrarygoblin the cool part imo was that it was so different from earlier stuff. Innovation is fun. Though, admittedly, not extremely innovative but still something is better than nothing. The feats seem interesting though.
A dating sim where we can have pocket monsters to battle with?
Lol. That all makes sense. Good ears.
Well, it is smart business to offer an adventure module for a young adult market. I mean in their novels they have always had their standard Nobel lines and then done a younger reader novel line so for games this make sense too. All that being said this is not for me. I like 5E mechanics but the lighter toned adventures (Wild Beyond the Witch Light and this) are just not me. Even as a young adult I liked more darker themed content. WOTC modules like Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frost Maiden or more standard fair like Ghost of Saltmarsh are more my style. Still, I can purchase piece meal some of the more mechanical options to use in my game via D&D Beyond but purchasing this book is not for me. I am sure WOTC will produce something of interests next year. They have already said some classic campaigns would be returning. So that is something to look forward too.
Who is paying for the tuition fees for that university?
So this means that officially feats are not an optional rule anymore? because if these are needed to play strixhaven, it means that of you still take feats as optional and dont even play with them then the backgrounds are useless
Might be required for this specific module.
Strixhaven is optional
Nice video... I enjoyed watching... subbed ! a fellow creator ..,,
Will this feat be available in normal campaign for example AL?
yeah they said you can pick it at level 4/8/etc
it's just the 5 backgrounds give the feat automatically
@@summermermaidstar756 really interested what it will look like. On one hand they say 1st level spell and two cantrips is worth a feat (magic iniate) but a 1st and a 2nd level spell is only worth half a feat (fey touched)…
@@CaitSith87 Same, I am so excited for this book. I play a lot of spellcasters anyways so the book having a prebuilt magic school excites me, my DM already said she will be running this campaign for us. The 5 backgrounds gives me so much variety for magical backgrounds set in the Forgotten Realms, sure I could go with a sage/acolyte/etc but I've always wanted there to be a "student" background since it fits so well with magical classes (Especially bard and wizard!). I can see myself making a character for each of the Strixhaven colleges.
@@summermermaidstar756 same here i play 95% wizards with the sage background or a custom one that gives arcana, alchemist tools and two languages. But still sad that the lorehold wiuard died. Wizard finally had a pet class even if it was kind of unfocused at level 10 and 14. we will see how the feats work :)
@@summermermaidstar756 shortly checked the spell list from the ua. I guess part of this spells will be included in the feat:
Lorehold:
knock, locate object
speak with dead, spirit guardians arcane eye, stone shape destructive wave, legend lore
Quandrix:
enlarge/reduce, spike growth
aura of vitality, haste
control water, freedom of movement 9th circle of power, passwall
Whitebloom:
lesser restoration, ray of enfeeblement revivify, vampiric touch
blight, greater restoration
antilife shell, mass cure
They start at second level so i guess it will be a free but prediterment 1st level, 2nd and 3rd level spell which could be good if there are good sets or worse then fey touched cause fey touched gives good spells and has +1.
As an economist i feel left out in regard of this college. i guess this direction would get the mage hand cantrip? ;)
there is a college specalising in mathmatics and quadratic equations
@@heykak agree its the closedt but you could also argue for the speech college depending on your specialisation. But i would imagine economics being the most studied subject it would more then deserve an own college. :)
There are some fun mechanics in Aquisitions Inc. that offer special benefits to characters who want to specialize in economics, with an accounting bent
@@heykak hmm but when i check again the features its not even math its physic majors? I of course had enough matrix math to land an spaceship but thats more cause my specific university was confusing our subject with aplied math. Other swiss universities have not nearly the same amount of math, especially the „best“ economics uni we have even ignores the subject almost thus i would say unless its usual to have that much math its not that fitting?
Really sad you could have made puns, key figures, hedging, financial statement, supply and demand, invsible hand, engles curve, game theory…
the possibilies for features…
There isn't one about social sciences either. (Psych, Social, Crim, Anthro)
All that extra stuff they talk big about like piety and the ravnica guilds are still not in dnd beyond. A big central peice of players characters just not avail to be easily tracked or modified.
So with the current trend those new spells from the background wont be added into dnd beyond to function correctly.
Something to bear in mind is that WotC and dndbeyond are not the same company, so what's important to one might not be important to the other.
Well they've been good with adding spells. I'm guessing those can be figured out much easier.
I do wish they'd hurry op on whatever they're calling the thing is that'll add the dark gifts and all.
I so want a character with that shadow dark gift.
@@Pancakeli if a large central mechanic for a book is not important. That's a huge business issue.
@@RyanTheWolf for d&d beyond maybe. But not for wotc
If the school is for young adults then my only question is this, why is there a school dance? Parties, sure. But a prom style dance? I do hope the book explains such, as the foundation of this is that they are young adults so if stuff like proms are slipping in, what other stuff have slipped in? Don't get me wrong, a book for students ala Harry Potter is cool but if the goal is to get away from that, the book should keep on message.
My university had spring and winter formals, in addition to homecoming, several other dances . . . and a swing dancing club.
@@egrettacaerulea And what was the explanation? From Elementary School to High School, we are inundated with school dances. Why have even more of that at university, our first real step into adulthood?
@@mekagengar2580 Lots of people seemed to like them.
I'm sure this was adequate justification for the student council and the recreation committee, run by students.
Those of us who weren't interested weren't required to participate (similar to high school) and, surprisingly, did not, which I believe *is* the adult response.
@@mekagengar2580 The adult thing to realise is that people can enjoy dancing at any point in their life, and that institution-hosted dances are not inherently juvenile.
@@deffdefying4803 Oh, look, a strawman to make an argument. No one is saying adults don't enjoy dancing but the issue here is the emphasis placed on the whole thing by Crawford that this is for adults. Yet they talk about school dances, besties and frenemies. All terms often associated to High School aged people at best.
Originally, I had no issue with this as it wasn't advertised as being for adults. I assumed this was a Harry Potter situation with young teens having a magic school life. But now they have come out and said, this is for adults because it's "irresponsible" to have kids do all those Harry Potter things. So I now have concerns on what else snuck in that leans more towards young teens versus young adults.
In either case, I did pre-order it prior to this reveal. And if it is a bit too kiddy for my tastes, I will simply make the ages of the students be in line with young teens instead of young adults. Or remove such and keep it for young adults.
But if you want to relive your High School/etc days (or lack thereof) with D&D, have at thee. Becuase the writers clearly wanted to, so you should be able to as well.
Let's leave that fey hobgoblin to gather dust shall we?
I really want them to stop putting Source material in adventure books. I shouldn't have to buy adventure books for a single race or class option.
It's not an adventure module, it's a setting book, with everything in it you need to run a particular setting. In this case, that setting is the Strixhaven college.
@@Pancakeli i know, i'm saying generally, they did it with witchlight, and a few other books this year. New spells, new subclasses, new races; put into module books, even though Tasha's was also put out not long ago.
@@greenhawk3796 a few this year? What books came out this year? Candlekeep, ravenloft, witchlight, Fizban's, and then this? So that's one book? Or is there more than witchlight that is an adventure but has player stuff? Ravenloft is a setting, Fizban's is a sourcebook for dragon stuff, candlekeep didn't have player options.
@@Nildread youre right. Witchlight was the first. I guess my actual issue is that there's too many separate sourcebooks coming out. I actually thought strixhaven was another adventure book.
@@greenhawk3796 I think that's a confusion because of how the setting books have been coming with atleast one adventure as an introduction to the setting. I find them pretty useful. But if you look on Amazon it's advertised as d&d/MTG adventure book. But the ravnica book is advertised as an adventure/setting book so that might just be an Amazon issue. My understanding was that it would be a bit like candlekeep though? But with more setting stuff/mechanics than candlekeep had. Maybe it'll look a bit like the wildemount book that had more than one starting adventure but was still a setting book. But that's kind of how all their setting books have been, atleast one adventure in the book. I'm also kind of confused by your "too many source books" when people have been asking for more campaign settings and more source books, especially when your stance is that you don't want an official adventure. How are they going to make money if they don't make books? And you don't have to buy all their books either. This one might not be for you and that's fine. There's probably better 3rd party material that fits your needs more specifically.
So basically… more love for spellcasters and the martial classes are still being left behind
*cries in fighting style*
I’m kinda over 5e. I’m going back to 2nd Ed and 3.5.
Seriously? I mean it is nice and good to see more culture in DnD but argumenting with age is weak. The game exists since 1974,lol.
So OP backgrounds that make the normal ones look bad and a furry race....very hard pas from me.
