    Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is finally here! So as I kick off my coverage of this book, we'll start with the new (sort of) races of the Dragonborn! We now have 3 distinct dragonborn options, which are severe improvements over the PHB version. What do you think of the changes from the Unearthed Arcana?
    Thanks for watching!

    TBH I think the lower damage makes sense as it's a lot more usable with it being part of the atta k action means you can stack it with multiple other attacks or use two weapon fighting with it or even crossbow expert.

    • @dragonhearthx8369

      There is also the fact that it is half damage as well. Because if you think about it, it was a guaranteed 1d8 damage proficiency bonus per long rest.

    I'm good with the breath weapon starting at 1D10 since it's also an AOE in all versions and now replaces an attack in an attack action when you get multiple attacks.

    For the art, I think its more on the art/style direction. The Chromatic and Metallic Dragonborn art are from the DND MTG set, and the art in MTG in general is a lot more refined than the ones we usually get in DND books.
    The Gem Dragonborn art as far as I can guess is probably from the DND art department, rather than the MTG one. But this is mostly me assuming each of them have different art departments rather than a unified one. If they aren't separate, it's probably the art director's call at this point or whoever higher up is dictating it.

    • @ODDnanref
      @ODDnanref 2 года назад +6

      From what I understand in MTG they commission the art. So they ask an artist to draw and paint them something giving some direction, like dragon like person is waiting to sell his wares or intimidating copper dragonborn prepares his corrosive breath. The. The artist decides how the stuff is drawn.
      MTG department pick their artist all under similar styles to make the cards look cohesive. Thus, they all look kind of similar but not really, as you can tell by small details which artist did what.
      No idea how DND does their art.

      @@ODDnanref From what I remember they’re all mostly freelance artists, so they’re not really tied exclusively to MTG, which is why some end up doing work for DND.
      It’s probably not that different for DND, but art direction and art directors heavily affect how the art ends up looking regardless.

      Some of the art in official D&D books is shockingly amateur. Like, there’s unofficial stuff on DM’s guild that looks more professional. I feel like there’s something weird going on internally.

    Honestly, the only change I’m making is the shape of the breath weapons. At my table, that will match what the chosen dragon has. Other than that, this is a HUUUGE improvement over the PHB Dragonborn. 🤠👍

      I really don't understand why they didn't let them have the same shapes as the PHB versions have.

    Breath Weapons, yeah they got a little nerfed but they're still perfectly useable, especially on a Martial with Extra Attack.
    The 3rd level abilities being moved to 5th level doesn't bother me, you still end up getting them, and in the case of Metallic and Gem the abilities didn't actually change.
    Chromatic Warding bothers me a little bit, it was a very powerful but also situational ability, meanwhile Metallic and Gem both get abilities that are powerful but also almost universally useful, it didn't need a nerf honestly.

      Pretty much my exact thoughts. I get that some people have that UA syndrome about needing things from the original. We saw this especially in the MTG subclasses that imo are some of the most underrated ones in the game. Keeping the breath weapon between cantrip & first level spell levels is the right sweetspot for racial traits in general imho.

    • @RedrumZombies
      @RedrumZombies 2 года назад

      Eh...
      Gem is the most useful here.
      It gets multiple things.
      For Chromatic: You get near length of a combat of damage immunity. Choosing Red or Blue is the best options.
      I do think however, it should be reactionary and use based like shield spell. Maybe based on prof? Shouldn't be level required, but for a resist to other chromatic damage types it would get at level 5.
      For Metallic: MBW should be a choice of Con or Chr at creation. Should not be a level 5 requirement.
      Let it's use be it's own resource and it gain a 2nd use at 9th level and 3rd at 14th level.
      +A Natural Armor of sorts that is more unique.
      With how normal AC is 10 + dex. Add con.
      If it's Heavy armor, half con.

  • @jjvh500
    @jjvh500 2 года назад +6

    I am perfectly fine with the breath weapon being 1d10 as a base. I think a lot of people are over looking the fact that you only have to replace 1 attack in an attack action with the breath, not the full action! Any class that gets Extra Attack can make incredible use of it still... especially if you have haste on yourself!
    Also, the art for the Chromatic and Gem dragonborn have a similar vibe because they are both from MTG cards, Jaded Sell-Sword and Dragonborn Champion respectively. I think WotC tends to have a narrower range of art for Magic than it does for D&D, but maybe that's just me.

    • @videogollumer
      @videogollumer 2 года назад +1

      It's also considering the fact that it's an AoE damage ability; you can, potentially, damage up to 6 or 7 medium or small creatures with it.

  • @GooeyChewie
    @GooeyChewie 2 года назад +10

    The argument that WotC left out three or four lines for typical ability score improvements to save space really falls flat when they promptly include two paragraphs which don't pertain to these races at all. Including the typical ability score improvements would take nothing away from those who prefer floating ASIs; failing to include them forces those who prefer set ASIs into using Tasha's supposedly "optional" rules.
    To be honest, I'm also not terribly happy about how languages are handled. Each race could have have "Languages: Common and one other, typically Draconic." This method would take less space than the paragraph explaining languages, still allow you not to pick Draconic if you don't want it, and would give a little bit of guidance to anybody who doesn't already know that there is a dragon-based language.

    • @videogollumer
      @videogollumer 2 года назад

      It doesn't really matter, we already have ASIs for your typical Dragonborn. Though, I can see a lot of people swapping out STR for CON if they want to play a Dragonborn Sorcerer, or CHA for CON if they want to play a Dragonborn Fighter or Barbarian. It's just more convenient.

    This is a huge buff to the Dragonborn, but I feel they need to adjust it just slightly.
    1. I would have kept the 2d8 damage just because Breath Weapon is a limited resource.
    2. Chromatic and Metallic Dragonborn should have gotten a fun rp ability like Gems did with Telepathy. Something like Prestidigitation would have been nice.
    3. I would have upped the Chromatic immunity time to 5 minutes so it has a stronger use outside of combat.
    4. Lastly, I would have given them a free skill, tool, or instrument proficiency of their choice since, in the lore of the 5e PHB, Dragonborn seek to master a specific skill.
    Seems like a lot of changes, but they are mostly minor things. Regardless, I am happy to have Dragonborn be playable now.

These may not limit the creation of your character, but they do inform the world building, telling us what most members of a given race are like, as a community. (Of course, with dragonborn we already have a default for that in the PHB, so that's fine.)

    As long as I've been running 5e I've added a few things to Dragonborn. I took one look at them and knew they needed a change.
    First I added another die to their breath weapon, starting at 3d6 instead of 2d6 and going up normally to 4d6 and 5d6 later on. Second I let them use their breath weapon a number of times equal to their Constitution modifier, recharging on a long rest. Third, they can pick a weapon to gain proficiency in reflecting the martial culture of the Dragonborn. Everyone who has played with me seems to like it a lot. I'm glad these additions are being added to make the race even more appealing to play.
    I am sad they didn't fix the old one though. I don't want people to only play these new Dragonborn as if they are the only Dragonborn they SHOULD be playing. I don't want to see the chromatic subtype disappear from tables because these are just so much better.

    The complaint about the custom ability scores is less about the option to alter it, but more of the contradiction set by tasha’s. It was an optional rule in tasha’s to be able to choose the ability scores granted by a race, so dms could choose which way their table is to handle races as whether it dictated their physical and mental ability by being a certain race or not. But as soon as they printed it, every book afterwards they decided to make the “optional rule” into base game rules as every race having super customisability. It seems very lazy to always print the same thing for ability scores, and put more work on the DM if they want to run their world in a certain way, regardless of how small work that is.
    Just to also clarify, I often do use tasha’s optional rule for ability scores and am fine it, just not fine with the laziness of it all.

So, the way they approach was, IMO, tricking people that like the old way to believe they are bringing a new option on Tacha, when what they were really doing is changing it.
    I mean, if you wan't to adopt the new books on your table, you basically need to use the new model of stats distribution, unless you go deep on homebrowing... I am pretty sure they didn't made it clear on TashaCoE because people would riot.

    I think they should have kept 2d8 for the breath
    I also think the chromatic dragonborn was in need of another ability, it is clearly inferior to the other 2 variants except for very specific situations where u might wanna take a stroll through your own cloudkill or some lava but overall.
    I would have liked perhaps a feature that lets you tap into the elemental power of chromatics. Maybe a larger breath weapon almost unhinging your jaw as you let loose a fury not accessable by other dragonborn increasing the range of the damaging breath weapon maybe.
    The fact the chromatic resistance takes an action is honestly just bad, u basically disable yourself for one turn to walk around with a bit of swagger for a minute, the feature is amazing, but the cost u pay for it is just not in line what the other 2 dragonborn or other races get. (considering dragonborn simply don't get a lot of features overall)
    I think metallic and gem dragons are fine and simply make for super flavourful characters, tho im surprised the metallic dragons are so purely combat focussed when their dragon counterparts often enjoy less physical activities and like to engage in conversation or arts. But of course the metallic breath weapon still is an amazing character option to have.
    I love all the options, wish there was more dragonborn art, I noticed a lot of art for red and green dragon art in the book, some of the other dragons got quite a bit less full feature artworks. And I would have loved to see a little draft for every single dragonborn heritage, playing a crystal dragonborn myself right now I would have appreciated more than 2 artworks within the book for the crystal dragon and no hint at a crystal dragonborn.
    I can only imagine what other gem dragonborn players feel like, at least my boy got the cover and looks absolutely stunning on it, way more stunning than the actual references in the book.

    Here's how I designed Dragonborn in a homebrew
    Dragonborn
    Ability Bonuses: +2 Strength +1 Charisma
    Size: Medium
    Speed: 30
    Darkvision 60
    Claw 1d4+Str Slashing
    Natural Armor- When not wearing armor you have an AC of 13+Dex*
    (Optional) Draconic Presence : Dragonborn are proficient with Persuasion and Intimidation skills.
    Draconic Heritage
    Energy Resistance: Nothing to ad here I feel it's good enough
    Breath Weapon: The original version of this Feature was very weak, being only ONCE PER REST, this needed some reworking.
    Damage- 2d6 Damage type varied depending on Scale Color, +1d6 at levels 6, 11, and 16 for total of 5d6
    Range- 15ft Cone or 30ft line, what ever the Dragonborn wants when used
    Uses- Either Recharge 5-6 like other creatures with a Breath Weapon or a 1d4 Round Cool-down**
    Save- Metallic and Chromatic Dragonborn still have a Save DC=8+Con+Prof, Save depends on the Energy type.
    (Optional) Draconic Maturation
    Upon reaching level 7 a Dragonborn develops an additional physical characteristic of their draconic ancestry depending on the path they choose (either Sky, Land, or Sea). This process can be painful and to add additional roleplay value to them upon reaching level 7 their body is wracked with pain as the process starts, they must make a Constitution Save of 15 or pass out from the pain where they take a mandatory Long Rest (8 hours). If they pass the save they remain awake and they delay the development until the next time they take a Long Rest. These are more to add variety with the Dragonborn physically giving them more movement options.
    Sky: A pair of scaly dragon wings erupts from the Dragonborns back giving them a Fly speed of 30 feet (20 if wearing heavy armor), at level 14 Fly Speed increases to 50 (40 if wearing heavy armor).
    Land: The dragonborns forelimbs are strengthened and their Claw attacks increase to 1d6+Str Slashing damage, they also gain a Climb speed of 20 and the Powerful Build feature like Goliaths. At level 14 they gain a Burrow speed of 20 in soft earth such as soil or sand.
    Sea: The dragonborns hands and feet become webbed giving them a swim speed of 30 andyour tail also becomes more flexible to help with swimming but also gives you a Tail Slam attack with 1d8+Str Bludgeoning damage***. Then at level 14 they are able to hold their breath for 15 minutes at a time.
    Gem Dragonborn
    Thought I'd toss this out as well. In D&D 3.5 MM2 there are Gem Dragons who are the Neutral counterparts to Metallics Good and Chromatics Evil. Thought I'd introduce them as a new Dragonborn type.
    Instead of Charisma Gem Dragonborn get a +1 Intelligence
    Breath Weapon - Gem Dragonborns Breath Weapon DC is Charisma based instead of Constitution based like the others, DC=8+Int+Prof. Check MM2 of 3.5e, this is why I said Charisma instead of Constitution.
    Dragon - Energy Type Resist - Save - Breath Type
    Amethyst - Force - (Dex save) - Force Damage
    Crystal - Radiant - (Con save) - Radiant Damage
    Emerald - Thunder - (Con save) - Thunder Damage
    Sapphire - Lightning - (Dex save) - Lightning Damage
    Topaz - Cold - (Con save) - Cold Damage
    Obsidian - Fire - (Dex Save) - Fire Damage
    * I would have Natural Armor also help characters who wear armor cause their Dexterity is low by having it provide a +1 AC bonus while wearing armor like the Defense Fighting Style. I feel like this is how Natural Armor should work. When not wearing armor your scales/thick skin/ect acts as armor but when you are wearing armor it just gives a bonus due to being an extra layer to what you're wearing. Natural Armor also replaces the 10 in the Unarmored Defense Class Abilities, so a Dragonborn Barbarian or Monk would have an AC=13+Dex+Con/Wis.
    ** I prefer the 1d4 Round Cool-down for Breath Weapon cause it doesn't guarantee a 33.33-% chance you'll be able to use it again on your next turn. Instead you basically have to wait 12-30 seconds till you can use it again depending on what you roll on the d4. It also prevents spamming it so you'd have to use other tactics during the Cool-down period.
    *** This is something Lizardfolk should have as well.

    Chromatic Warding lasting for 1 minute is perfectly fine. For instance, if you chose a red dragonborn and activated the ability before running across a river of lava, you could cover 570 feet before it wears off. That is substantial.
    For comparison, the average North American river is 135.4 meters (~444.22 ft.) wide. If you need to cross a lava flow 600 feet or greater in width, you might just have bigger problems with your environment than just one molten flow.
    This doesn't even cover how far a rogue could cover with Cunning Action (870 ft.).
    A 10 minute duration would be excessive, making the distance covered be more than a mile (5970 ft.). And this would be at level 5 with NO MAGIC. 1 minute at level 5 is good enough.

I don't hate that idea, but it requires work on the DM to create a society for that race that really inspires players and connects with campaign. Personally I've been the type of player who doesn't focus as much on the abilities of the race. However being in the dms chair for a good while I've felt when looking at the UA sure it is a buff, but it felt so much more that the tier of play felt shifted. Thankfully it got more balanced, a third level ability to be immune to damage for much more than the average combat[60 rounds jeez] felt nuts to me [knowing campaigns usually start at1st or 3rd in my experience]. But now with the damage revision and the level change I am fully open to having this as an option in my campaign world. but that is just me.

    • @tristananderson8165

      I mean 1 minute is ten rounds and 99% of combats don't go longer than 10 rounds meaning this ability is still going to function for an entire combat. It being 10 minutes meant is was much more usable outside of combat and seeing as you aren't even going to need to use it outside of combat very often, the nerf really doesn't change it's power level in combat at all and only really serves to diminish it's already super situational use out of combat. Tldr 60 rounds doesn't really mean much more than 10 rounds because the vast majority of combats don't go longer than 10 rounds.

    I think the only thing I strongly dislike about the Dragonborn is the change to their lore. Their origin was that they were from a different world and got dropped in during the Spellplauge. They were the slaves of dragons, not the offspring of them. While I do enjoy the art and agree that every player I've met imagined and described their dragonborn to look like these do, its just a tad off-putting to rewrite their very existence for it.

  • @BlameCarson
    @BlameCarson 2 года назад

    I'm curious with how the interaction between Bladesinger's extra attack and Booming Blade will work with this new breath weapon. I immediately thought of this based on the Repulsion Breath for the Metallic Dragonborn. Before we get into it, yes I know the movement will be forced, but it will deter them from moving on their following turn because the effect will remain until the start of our next turn.
    Level 6 Bladesinger feature Extra Attack states
    "You can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks,"
    Level 5 Metallic Breath Weapon
    "When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation in a 15-foot cone,"
    Now I know this is semantics and was probably just an overlook, but neither of these specifically state that they don't replace the same attack. They both replace one attack of the two made from the extra attack feature. I'm 99% sure that this is not RAI, but it seems to be RAW. And if that is the case, goddamn do I want to play a Metallic Dragonborn Bladesinger.
