Hey, just visiting from 2074. Our primary food source is actually a mercury/gold alloy manufactured by the UCU (United Citizens United) it serves as both food and currency.
Why am I watching Cody clog a toilet with Mercury at 3am. That moment when you ask yourself “what the heck am I doing with my life”.
At least now you know hahahah

5 am here bruh
That was the moment you became chemistry teacher

Thank you I had 200 lbs of mercury clogging my toilet and I didn't know what to do, but thanks to you, I fixed it!
Did you just use more mercury?
See, you made a mistake by having 200 lbs of mercury, instead of 240.
Me too!
You too? Man I was searching the internet to find a way to get this goddamn merkery out of my terlet!
Just imagine Cody walking into a hospital and saying, "Hey, I may or may not have tried to flush 240lbs of mercury down a toilet and I think I need a blood test"
LMFAO
He didn't try, he succeeded 🎉
First of all, I’m very drunk…. I’ve no idea why I watched this video but I’m so glad I did. Watching a Mercury toilet flush was beautiful.

All these idiots commenting about flushing mercury and putting into the environment did you not see the first 2 mins of the video where shows that he made his own plumbing system where nothing would go in the environment ?
Flushing mercury down the toilet can be bad for the environment
Everyone like the comment that is two comments above from mine.
Ashin Kusher thanks captain
This idiot (Matt G) didn't seem to notice that not all of the material was recovered, nor did this idiot (Matt G, still) consider that the lack of warnings about the substance, proper demonstration of safety equipment (e.g. gloves, or a contained lab), the lack of proper explanations (like why the EPA would be 'on his ass' for contamination), and the lack of discouragement from repeating this in a real toilet is reckless and irresponsible. Personally, I don't understand how this is allowed on RUclips being that it is essentially a simulation of an act of terrorism being that in a 'real setup' that innocent lives would be at stake due to how sewers function and what happens to waste in the process. This person has demonstrated that he clearly does not deserve the right to possess mercury and I hope this video leads to a restriction of his access to it and chemicals like it.

What was difficult to predict about this experiment?
dovregubben78 Whether it would flush or not. And the result was interesting because it did flush, then it didn't flush, then it did again under different circumstances.
I did not find that difficult to predict, Firstname Lastname. Mercury is 13 times denser than water.
Where do you get your mercury? I've been wanting to do some experiments with some but I've not been able to find it very cheap.
I saw the title and was absolutely horrified. I am so glad you were doing this with a connected toilet
If a mercury thermostat gets broken in a government building, the entire building shuts down and they literally bring-in a Hazmat team to clean it up. And there's Cody, sticking his hand in a few hundred pounds of mercury.
thechosendude where did you hear that?
thechosendude They wouldn't even have a mercury thermostat in the first place?

Me watching the middle of the video: ok great dude u read my mind. Here is my subscription.
The way Cody is handling the mercury is safe, as metallic mercury is not remarkably toxic. Organomercury compounds and mercury vapour is toxic though, and this is how most people get poisoned by it.
Mercury will start evaporating at room temperature and especially with the amounts hes handling and the constant movement there will be mercury in the air, its outside which helps but safe is still a word i wouldnt use.
“Safe” is definitely an oversimplification, but that is the gist. Cody knows chemistry, knows the risks, and takes precautions to help protect himself.
Like he alluded to when flushing the full tank of mercury, elemental mercury is still really dangerous if it comes into contact with an open wound, a sore, or a mucous membrane like the mouth or nose.
Like another commenter pointed out, mercury will evaporate at room temperature, and *breathing* mercury is definitely way worse than just touching it.
There’s also the possibility of the mercury reacting with something unexpectedly to produce a much more dangerous material - you don’t know all the chemical properties of the toilet bowl material or the plungers, for example. Different compounds could be far more dangerous, and in a setting like this there’s not much control you can implement to monitor or prevent unintended reactions.
Basically, don’t do chemistry at home, don’t do chemistry without a lab partner, don’t do chemistry without a chemistry education. Stay safe, folks.
If i remember correctly cody put some mercury in his mouth in a Video but i think he deleted it

Definitely a good demonstration of the relationship between surface tension versus capillary action. The weight of the bulk of mercury gives greater capillary adhesion to the porcelain bowl while the combined surface tension of the volume of mercury atoms all linking arms saying "hell no, we won't go!" 😄

I think the most shocking thing about this video is that in 2016, mercury had a price of nearly 4000 dollars per flask.
He likely bought before the price increase. Also, the $4000 price tag is per flask (76 pounds), not $4000 each pound. But, if purchased in 2016, he likely paid (4000/76) * 240 = ~$12,600

this man is fucking handling mercury without gloves like it's nothing. that's metal as fuck dude
elemental mercury is not dangerous... but the mercury you find in thermometers etc is not elemental and therefore can be absorbed into the skin readily. peace you noobs :)
www.cdc.gov/niosh/ershdb/emergencyresponsecard_29750021.html
According to the CDC, "Elemental mercury is toxic primarily through inhalation of mercury vapors. It is only slowly absorbed through the skin, although it may cause skin and eye irritation. Elemental mercury droplets may be absorbed through eye contact. Ingestion is not an important route of acute exposure as almost no elemental mercury is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract." So yeah, any kind of mercury, elemental or otherwise, is still absolutely dangerous.

Ignignokt Err Mercury won't absorb through skin. It will only go through a wound
I had the pathological shyness and tremor even before. Mercury is very safe UNLESS YOU HEAT IT AND BREATHE THE VAPORS FOR A FEW MONTHS DAILY. That is essentialy what hatters did during the manufacture of felt..
Mercuric nitrate was commonly used in the production of felt for hats. During a process called carroting, in which furs from small animals such as rabbits, hares or beavers were separated from their skins and matted together, an orange-colored solution containing mercuric nitrate was used as a smoothing agent. The resulting felt was then repeatedly shaped into large cones, shrunk in boiling water and dried. In treated felts, a slow reaction released volatile free mercury
but he messes with the stuff so often . . .
I like how halfway through it became a plunger demo
