It just seems so odd how that little tub had 640lbs of mercury in it.
It's like, consciously I know how dense mercury is being metal. It cognitively makes perfect sense that a tub of the stuff would be extremely heavy.
Actually physically seeing it, my brain doesn't accept it. It looks like I should be able to grab that tub and lug it around with a little effort.
You gave to imagine the mercury as a solid
@@jupiter_ios Why imagine a liquid as a solid if it's not a solid? Is that really the best way for us to understand things -- by pretending those things are not what they really are -- instead of just training our brains to be better at understanding the things in the world around us as they _actually_ are?
@@davecarsley8773 in the sun from some angles it just looks like water and you can imagine that thing is heavy but not unliftable like a massive steel block that size.
Mercury is the heaviest liquid because it is the densest liquid.

@@thevirtualtraveler mercury thermometers are the most accurate. These times it's very easy to convince people to fear anything.

That paper towel not soaking up mercury was crazy weird
August Sawzak Yes!! So glad someone mentioned this.
Mercury doesn't soak up, it's too dense for that.
It's not really the density that causes it. Mercury is extremely cohesive and less adhesive than water, that's why it can clump together to create those big droplets and generally doesn't stick to surfaces. Water "sticks" more easily to another material and makes less big droplets which will end up in the porous structure of a paper towel.
On top of that water also sticks to paper towels because of the cellulose fibers, which it will cling to even more.

Nothing terrible happens most of the time when falling on his face. however he lost 10 years of life expectancy doing it x)
Oliv étom An proof for this claim?
Nah it was more of a joke.
However you can search on Wikipedia for gas toxicity of metal mercury (when oxydized it releases few amounts of mercury that goes in air and when you breath it, it goes to lungs, becomes another chemical form of mercury which is neurotoxic), and about the ridiculously low amount of mercury required to get intoxicated.
He's totally responsive of his own life but I would certainly stay very far away from this mercury bath :p
Oliv étom Ok lol. But, this mercury is not oxidized it is room temp. When the mercury is boiling then it releases a toxic gas.

You need to take the time and make a 5-10 minute video on the science of mercury. That way, you can link it at the start of every video that contains it so people quite wierding out all concerned. If that video exists already, I don't remember seeing it.
Harold Love You need to take the time to do some easy searching before telling someone else to make a video of something that already exists.
7:25 That's a common misconception with water in swimming pools because know humans can be buoyant enough to actually float. There's no way to naturally stabilize the pressure because gravity (your body weight) will *ALWAYS* be more dominant than every other existing force

Cody, on toenails:
I used to get ingrown toenails all the time. Even now they're trying. :D
The trick is to put a roll of cotton wool in between the nail and your toe for a while until it settles. And don't cut the toenails too deep. Haven't had an ingrown toenail for 10 years thanks to these two rules. I can go into more detail later, if you want. Good luck. ;)
so you just leave it there or take it out in a month or so?
glgina6 yup! I’ve done that for years and it really works. The cotton just creates enough pressure to literally force the nail to grow upwards. It’s totally safe as long as you don’t try to force the cotton super deep under the nail.
Wish someone had told me that about 20 years ago.
Can confirm I do this same thing
glgina6 In my case, it usually takes a week or so. The point (at least in my case) is to keep your toe safe from your nail until the swelling stops, because it's all mostly caused by stubbing your toe on something
I've often wondered this, myself. Thanks Cody! I love watching your videos. The things you do, are the REAL things scientists should be researching!!! Thanks!!
Hell yea! Thanks.
This is by far the most interesting piece I’ve seen in ages! Thank you! 🫡
