I have an electric motor out of a tread mill. It is quite large but I know nothing about electric motors really. I want to make my lawnmower run off this motor. Riding lawnmower, the treadmill originally had a speed controller in order to change the speed of the treadmill belt, but will that work for an rpm change for the lawnmower? Or do I need a different speed controller?

Only if they are wired in series, with no load you can damage the motor. Shunt or parallel motors can be started with no load
