      I'm pretty certain this particular update is for units with navigation built in. With that said, android auto updates are done on the phone not the head unit of the car

      The mapnsoft gives the option to put your VIN in to check. There is also a list of examples of which units can be updated here: update.kia.com/US/EN/updateNoticeView/129
      It is called the navigation update though, so I am going to guess it won't work unfortunately.

Unfortunately, if someone actually doesn't like something of my video I can't try to change that aspect in my future videos unless they tell me which pretty much never happens.

      Not sure if this is helpful but I found this information from KIA: www.kia.com/ie/service/mobility/map-updates/ (I know the site is local for Ireland but seems to be for Europe). Thanks! Great tutorial, but I have a couple things to add. I realize this tutorial is from a couple years ago- so this might be the cause of some of my issues. To start I have a 2020 Telluride EX purchased when they just hit the lots. I had NEVER updated the Nav/Radio until now- so basically I had like the original firmware. I used a USB 3.1 and creating the USB stick is pretty straight forward, just takes a little time because it's like a 36GB file to download then copy to the stick. I insert the stick, start the car- everything is good- but it takes like and hour at least. So my car is running in the driveway for like an hour. I go out there thinking it's all done and when it rebooted, it started the process all over again. So being pissed, I turned off the car and removed the stick. I started the car and it seemed like it updated, but when I went to check navigation, it said it was corrupted- and it needed reinstalled. So I started over- but this time I wanted to see if the update would install if I started it while the car was on, then turned off the car. Well it does- not sure why no one ever mentions that the car does not need to be running after the update is initiated. Periodically I went back to the car to turn it on and check on the progress of the installation. When the install was on step 4 of 5 I waited this time in the car, it rebooted, said restoring data at one point (which I thought meant it might have failed- but that wasn't the case), then the screen came up to enter the profiles- at that point I removed the USB, and then everything worked correctly. From this experience I learned it takes way longer than 30 minutes if you're starting with a very old firmware, also at least on the Kia's, don't be surprised if it reboots and goes through the process again. And the most important (and this is in my case- not sure all vehicles will respond the same, so continue at your own risk)- once you get the process started with the car on, just turn the car off and leave it, come back every 15 min or so to check on progress.

    Great video! I was able to successfully update on my 2021 Telluride, however the UI is totally different. The fonts are all android’ish and the Home Screen isn’t Split screen anymore, it’s a purple screen with my name, weather on the left side, and the purple hue transitions into the map/ navigation on the right side. It’ll take some to get used to. (Especially because I don’t like purple and no way to change the color)

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      This process will work for you, you would just use the "Display Audio" version of the software download (update.kia.com/US/EN/updateNoticeView/677/pop1). For carplay for your car my understanding is that it should work by just plugging your iPhone in. If not, you might have to enable carplay within the menu (probably under connectivity).

    Will try to find an old USB drive that i put off somewhere in my drawer.
    The one and only feature that i would like to see is the full screen android auto, i don't know why it is so hard for Kia to make this happen to their consumer. Also a heads up for doing that many jumps it will do multiple updates. So when it finishes the first time leave things alone as it'll do at least one more (maybe even 2 more). Also expect the process to take a few hours with so many jumps, and everything will look a lot different as well moving from 12.

    Thanks. I have a 2016 Kia Sorento. It has the 32GB SD card in the port above the screen. The update software wants me to use an SD card only (USB is not a choice as far as I can see), which means I'll have to pull the current one out of the car and plug it into an SD port on my computer. Then run the update and pop the SD card back in. However, it makes me nervous because the first thing it wants to do is format the SD card, and if I mess it up, then I have nothing. So I am going to buy a second SD card, format it, and install the package onto it. So my question..... is there any sort of requirement to use the SD card which is already in the slot? Any sort of hardware verification which will require the use of that specific SD card?

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  2 года назад

      I'm not aware of any requirement to use the one from the car. It says if you have a 16GB one to purchase a 32GB one so I'd assume there wouldn't be an issue there as long as it's the right size and formated in the correct file system. I would suggest purchasing from somewhere with a gold return policy so you can return if it doesn't work. It also mentions to NOT use microSD. Sorry I can't be more of assistance with that as my car doesn't have a SD slot. If you purchase one I'd love to know your results so I can provide the information to others who might ask the same question in the future.

      Mapnsoft must have pulled the downloader in preparation for the newest update soon to be released. You can grab the downloader from here ( update.kia.com/US/EN/navigationUpdate ) and the instructions are exactly the same still once it's downloaded.

    Hmm, so I have a 2020 Telluride S, without navigation. When I go to the mapnsoft site, I don't see an option to download OR puchase any update. I am mainly interested to know if there is a way to update the firmware for the headunit in the car. Is that possible?

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 года назад +2

      My understanding is that this only works for headunits with navigation. Not sure why, but based on the listed headunits supported that seems to be it.
      You can get the updater from here (update.kia.com/US/EN/navigationUpdate) but again I'm pretty certain this doesnt work for non navigation headunits. Luckily the updates are mostly map updates and split screen for android auto and apple car play on the larger displays.
      Next time you are at your dealer I'd suggest to ask them to verify if the software running on your headunit is the latest.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 года назад +3

      My understanding is that this update is only for units with navigation. If your car has navigation then the update would include the sounds of nature as well as multiple map updates and a few new map features. If you have the larger display it will also enable the ability to have split screen for android auto and apple car play. Its the same update for 2020 and 2021, so if you have navigation and want any of those updates I would do the update.
      You can also see if your dealer will do it. Some will do it for free, others charge.

      So it looks like in the US for the 2018 Sportage LX apple carplay was "optional" where the higher trims it was standard. For Canada it was not an option on the LX trim. I'm honestly not sure what the requirement would be for the LX to have it but it seems like it was some sort of additional purchase and updating the infotainment system would not enable it. During the update something failed out of that list from 1-5 but it installed the new UI. The time wasn't displaying nor was my backup and front cameras after a 20 min drive from UB to ECMC. I was worried something was messed up. So I ran the update again after turning off the car and turning it back on. This time I got a complete update message but my camera wasn't displaying after putting it in reverse to drive. I shut the car off turn it back on then my cams were showing. @@BeardedTechGuy thanks, I was hoping that was going to be the case, but I never got one. I think it’s because I had never upgraded the software since buying the car. I have a 2021 Telluride SX and it went from the black and gray 3 screen setup to the purple one. And after going through steps 1-5 twice it finally brought me to the main screen. But still didn’t say update complete. It just asked me to setup “profiles” for driver 1 and driver 2

    Hello. I was eligible for an update on my 2017 Kia Sportage followed all the prompts to create an account, install updater, install in the vehicle. I even printed the directions. The car took like 40 minutes to install with several prompts: do not turn off, blah blah...I followed the prompts. I did it. I was so excited then upon completion no maps but other stuff updated. The error reads Navigation initialization unsuccessful. Please check the sd card and try again. I was wondering if you have any advice. I have not touched it since. Thank you Kim

      I'm not sure honestly, they say not to drive and I would agree with that as you may find yourself glancing over during the update to check on it. Also driving around could cause the USB drive to come out of the port just enough that could cause the update to fail.

    Great Information but I followed your instructions and brought the usb drive you suggested and going through the process it's telling me that the usb drive is too large which is a 64gb usb drive that I need a 32gb drive or smaller to copy to? I brought the usb drive you recommended, you didn't say in your video that it has to be 32gb usb drive.

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      Hmmmm that's weird, the mapnsoft site says max USB size is 64GB ( www.mapnsoft.com/kia/faq-contact-us/#:~:text=Please%20have%20a%2064GB*%20USB,the%20map%20%26%20software%20update%20download. ) and the Kia site does not list a size limit ( update.kia.com/US/EN/updateGuide/02 ). Ask me another it basically got to the 1/5 all the way through 5/5 and asked me another question which I said okay to and then it started over again!

    I've run into a couple of problems. First, when downloading, I got a message about the SD card being too big too small(?!), then when I changed to a 32G SDHC card, the nav system said it wasn't compatible for some reason. I have no idea what's going wrong. I'd rather not have to pay for the card, even though it's not that expensive, but it might be less hassle, unless there is a specific SD I need to find to be able to get this to work in my 2017 Forte5. The one thing that occured to me is the old card is a 16G and you need a 32 for all the updates. Maybe I need to transfer all the old data to the 32G first?

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 года назад +1

      I believe your car has android auto / apple car play correct? If so, you should be able to use a USB drive to do the update and not need to use a SD card. Kia does say when using a SD card it has to be 32GB. A few tips from Kia can be found here: update.kia.com/US/EN/updateGuide/02

    • @brucemai1429
      @brucemai1429 3 года назад

      @@BeardedTechGuy Ah! I really didn't know that or think about it! I wonder if that would update faster? I do have all the data transferred to a new 32G chip (there's about 26G on it) but I haven't had a chance to try updating yet because of the long time you supposedly have to wait for the nav to update. I'll check out that link. I found this one might be useful for looking up the error messages. I'll be referring to this, too, if it is needed: www.mapnsoft.com/kia/faq-contact-us/. The FAQ page has a link on the left side called "Map Update and Processing issues", and there you'll find the error codes.
