    I only had it for two days and the weather was quite poor, so most of the samples will be from *Panasonic S1,* which uses the same sensor and processing.

    I now have the Sony A7 3 and ZV 1 and both are great.

    Interesting- it’s just not enough to pursuade me to go from a G9- worse autofocus, worse ibis and crop anyway in 4k60fps.
    I’m waiting until Panasonic release one with full frame 4k60fps and autofocus as good as Sony- then I’ll upgrade.

      The G9 can do what the S5 can do, and some things better. Of course low light excluded. But I personally don't shoot in the dark, don't pixel peep, etc... I also carry the G9 whenever I leave home. Traveling, the lenses are smaller and lighter.
      I might consider the S5 when the lens selection is more "fleshed out". But for "me", the G9 meets my needs.

    • @Reyfox1

      @@TheHybridShooter true, but there are things the G9 does better. Faster fps shooting is one. I looking at all the videos on youtube, it seems the auto focus on my G9 is better. Same with the IBIS.
      And I too think Panasonic will drift from M43. There are "rumors" of a shake up in the camera division. I don't think the S series will be affected. Maybe the point and shoot and bridge cameras. But as far as advancement in M43, I don't see what else they can do with it. That doesn't make it any less capable of a camera.

    Great Review dude! super in depth about af as well. But I do wonder if you have ever seen any artifacts with the 10bit 150mbps codec in vlog, either on the s1 or the s1h or the s5. Have you seen any color blotches or banding when underexposed? Or is it almost perfectly clean?

    • @TheHybridShooter

      Thank you! I haven't had any issues with artifacts, but it is still difficult to recover V-Log footage if the exposure and WB isn't correctly set. I only recommend using Log on any camera if you have enough time to properly set it up. Flat setting is much more forgiving.

      @@TheHybridShooter it's telling that that's literally the only critique people can make about recent panny cams. The full frame panny cams are closer to flawless than any competitors for their price. never used AF in my life for video. It's a non issue. Same for massive amounts of other people. . No 4k60 and mushy 1080p60 in 2020? Hardly a competitive choice

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 года назад +6

      Of course it isn't the only piece of criticism, watch the video. It is understandable that you have never used AF in video if you are Panasonic user. Pana can't do full sensor 4K either, 1080p on A7 III is great.

The S5 seems the obvious choice on paper but I am really not sure of the DFD AF and it's future. X-T4 seems really balanced but also has problems (heat, remote app that should be illegal, SW issues)

    Great first look video, I especially like that you explored the L-Mount and competing mount eco systems. Like others, I wish Panasonic would direct some love to their M43 line, even if that is just to the GH6 while keeping the pace up on new L-Mount glass. I've been waiting to put my money down on a GH6 for some time, I do have a decent need of low light so the S6 really interests me, however not as much as the A7S III given it has addressed basically every issue I've ever had with video on the Sony A7 line. Adding to this is, as you point out, the enormous E-Mount eco system where I could actually go buy an A7S III + the entire Tamron f/2.8 holy trinity of lenses for less than I could buy the S5 and just the Panasonic 24-70 & 70-200mm f/2.8.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! Sigma lenses are also available for L-mount but the autofocus is unfortunately terrible with those, so the lens selection is a big advantage of E-mount.

    • @dominic-ryan
      @dominic-ryan 3 года назад

      @@TheHybridShooter wow, did not realise that the AF on the L-Mount Sigma's was not on par with those being put out by Panasonic. That really puts a big price barrier on L-Mount if AF is at all important to your work flow. As a long time Lumix shooter it doesn't make me happy to say, but that A7S III is looking better every day....

    The RUclipsr I was waiting to hear from on this! I currently have a GH5 and a G9, considering replacing my G9 with the S5 for the better video options and dynamic range for when I'm shooting photos, but I'm wondering if I should wait to see what Sony does with the A7 iv next year. Mainly hoping for uncropped 4k60, and the current lens selection on L-mount worries me a bit. I'd go with an A7 iii but I'm not a fan of the handling or the menu system. It also lacks some video features that my G9 can do.

I occasionally shoot in low light, don't care about video, and do a lot of hiking/cycling so I'm not sure it'd be worth switching after all due to weight/size of FF lenses. 💥William - another great video as usual. I appreciate your style of education. For me and part of this is based on your reviews, I'm getting dangerously close to a full on affair w/Sony.😻 I'm emotionally connected from a distance. I've eyed them for a while, but never made a move. That changed with the A7SIII. Currently, I have 2 x GH5 + 1 x GH5S, with a G7 to boot. I will likely sell one of one of the GH5 and the G7 as soon as the pre-order for the Sony A7SIII arrives and start moving (my affair into a relationship!) more in that direction. I love the GH5 and GH5S, but it's the autofocus and Bokeh for me... Sadly, Panasonic had such a large lead that if they would have worked on a different autofocus system we'd/they'd be in a better place by now. I've recorded corporate marketing videos with my GH5 on AutoFocus and the marketing team was good with it and said to leave it on. This was talking head with little movement, but I just don't trust it for anything else. This is the achilles heal of the camera beyond the crop (which is something they can't really do a lot about - but they can with autofocus). I feel the GH5 and GH5s are probably one of if not still the best value for advanced 4K/60p shooting on a budget (esp if willing to buy on ebay used like I did for my 2nd and 3rd), but... as I've grown I want a lot more bokeh and need better auto-focus. Such a gigantic price delta, but alas this S5 shows me Panasonic hasn't started to (really!) work on their main issue - AF. I know the S5 AF is not terrible with reviews like yours, but anytime I'm using double negatives to think positively, there's trouble. 👻 Keep Up The Great Work, William! 🤜🏽🤛🏽😎

    • @maciekgut8375
      @maciekgut8375 3 года назад

      @@TheHybridShooter I have to disagree. Why?
      1) S5 feels like a "downgrade" compared to the previous, more "premium" S cameras. Even 3 years old G9 has better build quality and EVF!
      2) Small and relatively cheap 45mm f2.8 DG DN that comes for free with S5 for in some regions is the first from a new series of L mount lenses announced by Sigma. It is reasonable to expect a certain level of uniformity across lenses in the new series. So it looks like more relatively affordable lenses are on the way from Sigma.
      3) The new 20-60mm kit zoom bundled with S5 was build by Panasonic with the cheaper and smaller S5 body in mind. It is probable that Panasonic won't stop at just one lens but will continue to supplement S5 body with new, relatively darker but smaller and more affordable lenses.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 года назад +2

      That free Sigma actually completely proves my point. They will rather include free stuff than just sell the camera for $1699. S5 was supposed to be entry level Nikon Z5 type of camera. They are trying to suggest that the S5 is superior than Z5, Z6 and X-T4 by setting premium price. It is below the S1 in hierarchy, but they are still trying to position it as a premium product.

    • @maciekgut8375
      @maciekgut8375 3 года назад

      @@TheHybridShooter Interesting point. You might be right here. But price tag above Nikon's offerings or X-T4 matches superior (and premium ;) ) video capabilities of S5: f log, no recording limit (below 60fps), waveforms, support for anamorphic lenses...
      Also It depends on the definition but positioning a product above an "entry level Nikon Z5" does not sound very "premium" too me. Anyway I get your point.
      All I try to say is that S5 is a clear departure from the approach presented by the previous S bodies (and accompanying lenses). Until now these were promoted as exclusive products aimed at professional elite.
      S5 is different. It is cheaper. S5 is bundled with cheaper and lighter. To me it looks like Panasonic is trying to associate S5 with portability, lower prices and video abilities for which their M43 system is renowned, and to distance it from the "exclusivity" of the S line. So I hope to see new cheaper L-mount lenses.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      You are right, but judging form the comments below my Lumix S videos, majority of people care more about autofocus than high-end video specs. Video capabilities are great, but there is not that many people who can take advantage of those, so it might not suffice to make it appealing to wider audience. Just received my S5, loving it so far. It’s somewhere between a full-frame GH5, and a slightly more limited S1H. People commenting here seem overly fussy about non-issues, IMO. Cameras are merely tools, and from what I’ve seen so far the S5 is a thing of beauty.

    I feel like the S5 represents some much-needed improvements for the range, but it's telling that the a7iii, over two years after its release, remains the camera to beat. And it's not just the autofocus either: the L-mount alliance doesn't have as many affordable options as the Sony FE. If they had the equivalent of Tamron's f2.8 zooms and superzooms, I think you'd see a lot more people seriously considering the switch.

    Mam na teba este jednu otazku ak mi mozes odpovedat. Zvazujem kupu Pan. S5 ale neviem najst konkretne data okolo vystupu. Vsucasnosti su okolo toho same "omacky" ale nic na 100% konkretne.
    Je mozne zo sucasnym "Firmware Update" natacat na Atomos Ninja V video vo formate 4k alebo UHD 50/60fps v kvalite ProRes 4.2.2. HQ s 10bit. farbami? Myslim naozaj 50fps a 4.2.2. 10bit a nie 4.2.0.
    Prechadzam na S5 z Pan. GH5s a ten vystup v danej kvalite je premna absolutne nevyhnutny.

      Tak uz mam odpoved na moje otazky. Ak by to tu niekto hladal tak nech sa paci: Panasonic S5 s Atomos Ninja V dokaze nahravat 5.9K video v ProRes RAW do 25fps a 4K video v ProRes Raw do 50/60fps. Samozrejme je nutne doinstalovat par veci di PC a aj tak vas slabsi PC (ak nerobite s Proxi) posle do haja.
      Nahravat sa da aj do ProRes 4.2.2 HQ, 10bit vo formate C4K alebo UHD do 50/60fps -stale cez HDMI. Kabel musi byt naozaj dost "peckovy" inak o vas neoprie ani bicykel.
      Dalej pre normalne natacanie je dobre si prisposobit Profily farieb a vypnut v nastaveni Stabilizacie vsetko okrem Operation Mode. - vsetko ostatne iba zhorsi uz aj tak dost viditelny rolling shutter + Aliasing & Moire.
      Dokupil som si obycajny adapter pre Canon EF na Leica L/T a funguje bez problemov s manualnymi objektivmi bez Vignetacie

    Panasonic could have easily made the "perfect camera" if they just change the Autofocus to Phase Detection. They know this too and refuse to give the customer(s) what they want so that's why Sony is killing the game.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  3 года назад

      It is not clear if they actually could have done it, since they use Sony sensors.

    Nice review! Couple questions. For the photo test how come u used AFC instead of AFS? For RAW testing , since its the same sensor as S1H how about changing the EXIF? Were any of the AF tests done with the faster custom AF settings, the transitions seemed a lot slower than other reviews I saw.

    In all of your camera test videos, you do a photo test where you walk towards the camera while the camera is shooting continuously to see the accuracy of eye auto focus. Why is it missing from this video?
    I tried an S5 for two weeks with three Panasonic S prime lenses and I'm returning it. The autofocus is garbage for photos. Even with completely stationary subjects in well lit environments it will miss focus with both eye autofocus and single point. The camera will lie to you, putting a green box over someone's eye, even when you review the photo, but when you get it into Lightroom and zoom in, it actually focuses on the nose, eye brows or the rims of glasses. I mainly do portraits and that makes the camera useless to me.
    It's sad because I love the quality of the photos and videos, the handling of the camera, the Panasonic prime lenses and the price. But I can't use it if it won't get photos in focus.

      Well I had it with the latest firmware and Panasonic S glass and it was unusable. Even using AFS with focus recompose, it would lie to me saying it's in focus with a green confirmation box in preview. Tried it on 15+ different subjects in well lit conditions.
      Going back to my X-T4 and waiting for the Sony A7iv used prices to get around $1200, then I'll switch to that.

    I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.

    Ho Hum. The Sony A7mk3 two years later. Nice camera, wrong price point for features presented. For those 6 people who have bought into the L mount marketing hype, and were complaining about the size of the S1, ok, this is Panasonic's answer. But the low res EVF and card slot issue cannot be ignored in 2020. Panasonic has gotten into the habit of doing strange cost cutting measures, essentially taking a common bag of already developed features and spinning out new versions of already existing technology. For $2000, there are better options as you pointed out. Nice review. What do you think about Luminar AI? Looking forward to your review of that. Stay safe.
