- Captured live in front of 2,000 people when Petra was the opening act for mainstream band, Mason Proffit. This is the original, grittier version of the song the way composer Bob Hartman intended with multiple guitar exchanges and dual lines reminiscent of Thin Lizzy. In 1981 it was made more poppy for the “Never Say Die” album version.
This is the initial quartet version of the band: Bob (guitar, lead vocal, composer), Greg Hough (guitar, harmony vocal), Bill Glover (drums), and John DeGroff (bass). Concert mix by Al Hornung. Recording by John Wheeler.
Video produced by Mark Hollingsworth and Grace Jester.
I think this performance might the most gritty of any song I've heard Petra perform. Interested in more from this era of Petra.
Yeah, Petra! They came on fire for the Lord the same time I did, around 1976. I saw Petra at the odeum in Villa Park. circa 1984. Rock on Petra in Jesus Hallelujah Amen!
Essas músicas moram em coração para sempre! Isso são uma verdadeira relíquia do passado que amo. Muito obrigado a quem postou essa coisa linda.
I wish they would have done the album version like this.
Great performance!
A Hammond B3 organ (as heard on the Never Say Die album) makes a huge difference.
Thanks for sharing this track, Mark.
You're welcome. : )
Bob Hartman, incredible guitarist, outstanding and creative songwriter. But, he was right to finally hire a lead singer.....
Yeah, he always knew that was not his strength. I know they auditioned a few guys in '75 and '76, but just couldn't find the right mix. I kept telling the band they needed to find Greg Volz after e band broke up. Finally they were able to connect in '77.
It doesn´t matter nowadays!! Ha ha!! I want more stuff of that time!! I want Bob singing 1974-1976 songs!!
Thank you so much for posting this! For years I have wanted to hear the original version of this song from this era of the band. This is gold!
You're welcome, Michael. I like this version SO much better than the poppy version on "Never Say Die."
a lost treasure!!! thanks a lot !!!
Wow. What a find! Really good jam.
Thank you for posting this. I listened to Petra tons in high school and finding this was a treat.
You're welcome, Brian. : )
I like this version better!
Me too.
Bob sang lead on their first album?? I thought the guy pictured next to Bob was the lead singer?
He and Greg Hough both sang lead on the first two albums
Does Bob know you have this? He said on a podcast that he would love to know if anyone has the original version?
Yes, Bob has this live recoding. : )
@@markhollinPlease Mark, Help me with the lyrics. Please check it!!
KILLING MY OLD MAN
I think it's gone far enough
I can't take it anymore
I've got to even up the score
Before he sweeps me off the floor
I've really got to find a way
Of taking care of him for good
I know he'd kill me if he could
So I'll nail him to the wood
Killing my old man
You may not understand
He's a terrible man
Got to make a stand
And kill the old man
Everything gonna be alright when dead and gone????
Even then I gotta find the way to carry on
I think I'd better do it now
I get my hammer and a nail
I pray to god that I won't fail
Or may he'll keep me in the jail ????
Killing my old man
You may not understand
He's a terrible man
Got to make a stand
And kill the old man
Got to make a stand
And kill the old man
And kill the old man
And kill the old man
And kill the old man
I think you've got it. One correction:
"Everything gonna be alright when HE'S dead and gone.
@@markhollin Thank You very much Mark!! DISCIPLE results more difficult to understand the pronunciation. You'll see more ???

every time that i think he's gone and i've finally won
he just keeps coming back, puts me on the run
I think i'd better do it now
get my hammer and a nail
pray to god i that i won't fail
lest he'll keep me in the jail
and i don't wanna stay in jail!
Why was this song controversial?
Some folks at Myrrh Records thought people would misunderstand the song title and take it literally by doing harm to their fathers. I'm not kidding.
@@markhollin What!? Come on people! That's ridiculous! Thanks for the response. I own just about everything classic Petra and most of the New Petra stuff. I prefer Greg X years but Just love this group and Hartman's song writing.
Is that an acoustic guitar I hear on there? Any video of any of this?
No acoustic guitar. Unfortunately, no video shot of the band in these early years.
Not Greg Voltz on lead vocals!?
This was years before Greg joined the band.
