Dick Dale inspired THREE genres of music: Surf, Punk, and Metal. Who else has done that? Come on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The choice doesn’t get any easier than this. Induct this legend already!
Funny quick story. When Dick Dale met Keith Richards , Keith said to him hi i play rock and roll. Dick turned to him and said oh yeah? Well i play machine gun nice to meet you. Anyway total respect to Dick Dale one of the best guitarists of all time
I tried explaining Dick Dale's technique to my Mom once - right handed strings on a left handed guitar. I may as well have been speaking Swahili. Anyway....yeah...R.I.P. King. Saw Dick live in 2000, got an autographed picture, which I'm glancing at now....
I have an interest but cannot play therefore i think my opinion means zero.zero. im actually trying to get a reaction from somebody who knows what they are talking about. I thought Leo Fender built him a proper left handed strat, but "D Dale" wanted bigger strings. Im sooo gonna mess this up... I thought someone strung his guitar "upside down" and silly people thought the small strings were sooo big. Told you i was gonna mess this up. I do believe his guitar he strung same as a righty but with #8 and wanted bigger even. Please please somebody correct my errors...!?
@@williamstamper442 he picked up a normal guitar when he was young…but played it left handed. But yeah he used pretty heavy gauge strings and Leo Fender build him the first big stage amps because the smaller amps would catch on fire
Absolutely ridiculous, he's massively influential & basically invented surf music singlehandedly (without him there'd be no James Bond theme, Shadows, Ventures, Dead Kennedys or Beach Boys). He totally deserves to be in the RRHOF
I've seen him live in a small Bar in Zürich named El Lokal. He played Nitro an walked among the peoples between two floors while playing. One of my most beloved concerts till today.
This Man is said to have obtained the Pick of Destiny off a secluded California Beach. A massive wave crashed in front of him and as the wave receded it appeared.
Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. 💔. Legend doesn't begin to cover the immense influence this man had on not only surf music, but music in general. Virtuoso. Genius. Unmatched talent. His technique was so unique, guitarists still try to master it. RIP Dick Dale, you will be sorely missed.
I laughed so hard when I noticed his guitar setup! He actually plays a left-hand guitar with the strings installed like a rotated right-hand guitar. Gotta respect that!
This might be the cheapest music video ever made ... and it's still cool as hell. I swing back by here every few months for another hit o' Dick-pickin'.

And most of them you have to pay for. Plus, if you can't rente a plane for vídeo shooting today, surely when it was done, it was way more expansive, and all other process a lot more expansive back in the day.
Met him at Speedway in Costa Mesa as a kid, he signed and gave me one of his white Dick Dale guitar picks, I wish I still had it. Rest in Peace legend. This song has also been stuck in my head all day and I finally remembered where I knew it from. Van's No Other Way video also features the song Nitrus.
Put on a great show in Atlanta on his last tour. Told a newspaper reporter one of the secrets to his sound was extra heavy duty strings - "You know that look on my face when I play - that's pain!"
Rest in peace Dick, I will always be grateful with you for your beautiful songs and for being one of my biggest inspirations to start playing the guitar. You may not be physically here anymore, but your soul is indeed with us through your music.
The video with Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughan....well need I say more. The best rendition of Pipeline, rock, surf music ever. I have been hooked ever since.

In early 1963 Dick used to play at the National Guard armory in Riverside most Saturday nights. I was in the Marine Corps at the time stationed at Pendleton and my dad had a house in Anaheim. A buddy and I would come up for the weekend and dad let me borrow his car to drive to Riverside. He would pack the place and most probably don't know that he could play just about any instrument which he used to do on "Surfin' Drums". There would be no heavy metal without Dick Dale.
