It’s an anecdotal story, but I met James at an event and the screen wave guys were there. James was awesome and polite, seemed generally happy to meet everyone. The screen wave guys were loud and tried to interject themselves into conversations as most people were ignoring them over James. Now, that’s my experience and doesn’t paint the whole picture, and obviously doesn’t have anything to do with Joe he should or shouldn’t have been compensated for his work, but it does paint a little picture on how the cinemassacre/screen wave combination wasn’t quite working.

I saw James at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Interesting point in terms of the AVGN movie. Reminds me that a few years ago, a Capcom exec made a point that the Street Fighter movie, for all its criticism, still brings in about $500,000 a year from TV broadcasting rights (this might have even gone up with the rise of streaming and on-demand video).

@donatellod.dabbins3609 not even close. Tony is awful and tries way too hard but not where it matters like when he tried doing a podcast or something covering the godzilla movies but got such basic things about the movies wrong. Almost like he hadn't even watched the movies in years or did any research.
One of my biggest issues with Rental Reviews was how obvious it was that Tony and others were trying to make it so much about them and leech off of James. It always made it so annoying to watch with how much he tried to override the conversation and cut off others.
The only benefit of its current iteration is that he doesn't feel the need to compete nor does he really do them with alot of people like on rental reviews. Dude is just beyond obnoxious and like a typical hack speaks with an air of authority yet when you see what content he's actually made its laughable at its "quality" speaks for itself

Before that behind the scenes video, sure the quality had declined, but outside of a particular bubble few people noticed, James had a great reputation, and even nasty drama sites held James up as "how it should be done". The BTS video and things like all the shirt jokes in the Rocketeer video had a real Streisand effect. I had one case where I worked long time ago and somehow the guy in question, who was a very disagreeable person, sent an email to everyone, not just the boss asking why he got his hours cut in half out of the blue when no one else did. He just left a few weeks later. Also it’s done after age 60 regardless of performance to encourage retirement. 1.2 million annual from the channel sounds like A LOT, even for a small staff, but you gotta remember that is after tax income of 760,000 for James and Mike. When they were plagiarizing content, we found out they farm out writing, so lets say there's, James, Mike, Justin Tony and Kieran and an editor and 4 writers they farmed out.
IF they split it 10 ways evenly, 760,000/10 is $76,000 for each person. (Which is not including overhead for videos and any webhosting for Cinemassacre.)
So, an editor making $40k when he doesn't own a stake in legacy content or merchandizing... feels about right. James and Mike might be grossing $200k, before taxes and it might seem unfair but I think they're making less than it seems.
Once you have employees and taxes, a million dollars split 10 ways is aggressively middle-class or lower middle-class in today's economy.

There's no way they make that much and Kieran is just disgruntled about his pay and exaggerating. James Rolfe has a net worth of about $200,000 and he had to get a charity discount to pay for his daughter's surgery when she was born. The AVGN movie did a gofundme and they only collected about $200,000 to create the film's budget. If the channel were making half a million a year Rolfe would be a multimillionaire and that's not even on the table. What a lot of people don't realize is that YT monetization is based largely around the actual content you create. If you have a bunch of 10-15 year olds clicking on your video you aren't going to make that much.
I mean really, do you think if James was a multimillionaire he would still live in that crappy middle class house? The whole idea of "youtube celebrity" is grossly misrepresented, most people who make a lot of money on RUclips do it through things not even related to RUclips. The RedLetterMedia channel has fewer subscribers but makes way more than Cinemassacre because they have a Patreon that a bunch of bored middle aged men are willing to donate to.

No, Mike and James both were different parts in the body of Cinemassacre. James decided to make a movie, which took a lot more time and effort than he thought, leaving the Cinemassacre body incomplete. Mike tried to fill those parts, which didn't really work and it took a toll on them both. They hired help, or sold some of their rights or something to Screenwave. It was later on that Mike left. He still works with James though, James was on one of his streams and Mike records footage for AVGN to this day. I think what Kieran says makes sense. Mike still owns part of the company and gets money from it, so he keeps helping to keep it alive. But every time they tried to get the ball rolling on a project, screenwave shut it down. I think Mike just said fuck it and did his own thing instead.
