@rogerosbornefishing mate I absolutely agree and love your super simple easy to understand tips i have caught many Taylor and your absolutely right theu can be a bit of a bastard to get in if they are big a crafty Taylor will not let you have a second chance with a slack line you really have to pull them in like a winch really get them in. I don’t mean yank them in jars but keep constant positive pressure great video mate
Yesss
Here in South Africa we call them Elf also, shad are caught anywhere where there is salt water even in estuaries. Lots of times they are in the foaming water, we use alot of floatation for the bait as they tend to feed higher up in the water column when they are deeper, they can be very fussy at times only eating a sardine belly or a whole sardine, sometimes we have to reel in the whole sardine as if it where a lure for them to bite, we also fish 2 hooks on a 3 way swivel cause when they are on the bite we can catch upto 2 at a time. South Africa has a daily limit of 4 Shad per day.
Hi from Australia Rodney, thanks for the info :)
Nice video Roger 👍👍👍💪💪💪
Awesome video, and I'm glad you actually use Australian metric measurements. Too many Aussie fishermen use archaic US Imperial.
Another amazing video Roger! Hopefully we see more target species fishing such as catching: Mulloway off the beach or shallow sandbar fishing videos.
That's the plan!
I love tailor. Much better than bream, and probably better than flathead in my opinion.
Great, please keep posting videos, you are one of the very best video creators ever.
Thank you, I will
As always, very helpful. Thank you
Helpful.
Thanks 😊.
Really enjoyed your video thank you😎🎣
I just love your fishing videos.. thank you

Roger that was a great video. I have signed up to your waitlist. Thanks once again for your videos - you are a phenomenal teacher! All the best!
Awesome, thank you!
Another nice vid!...very helpful and thank u..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thanks
You are welcome!
Great video mate. We do a run to Fraser Island each year chasing tailer, always excellent fun. Eating wise 3 out of 5 . We bleed immediately and , cryovac to take home to the family, as long as you don't wash the fillet it will freeze fine. I lost on in the freezer for 18 months and it came out perfect. Panko and shallow fry family favourite
Dear Roger fishing is so universal that you are helping the angler community all over the world, here in Puerto Rico, thousands of miles away and me and a lot of other fishermen are being benefit by your teachings, ty very much for that and wishing you the best on your new project.
Thanks A.J The RUclips videos will keep coming :)
I enjoyed your video on Taylor. When I was a kid, in the 70s, we us d to catch them on the silver “Wonder Wobbler” lure. I remember buying it from the local barber shop. 🙂
Very cool! Yes, I used to use Wonder Woblers with my Dad.
Nice info Mate!! Thanks
Happy to help
Fantastic video love how you included how to react to a bite 👌🏾
Thank you 😋
I love beach fishing. This is brilliant advice
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Roger. Plenty of tips and tricks making us better fisherman. Appreciate you knowledge.
Thanks, Glad to help.
great tutorial again roger , i,m gonna go for some tailor this Saturday using this info , cheers mate , keep imparting your knowledge on all aspects of fishing , i for 1 appreciate your sharing
Thanks 👍 All the best Rob.
Thanks for an excellent video Roger. I have caught hundreds back in KZN South Africa. Now as a relevantly new immigrant I look forward to teaching my grandson in a few years time. As they say, " When in Rome" etc. I thought it best to learn the Aussie methods. Good on yer. PS!! WILL DEFINITELY USE YOUR LINK BELOW.
Thanks Charles, great to hear from you 🎣
You’re a legend mate. Keep it up!
Thanks Plasmo, all the best with your fishing :)
Very enjoyable to follow your coaching
I appreciate that! Thank You
landshark outdoors of Florida did a fantastic catch and cook on “blue fish” and showed that for these type of fish, just as you said, eat ‘em fresh if possible. But his method was to bleed by slitting the gills and ice them immediately so that they don’t start to go mushy as fast as they might otherwise.
Hi Roger thank you for the helpful tips .. please keep this video on your channel
Justin, it will be on my channel as of tonight. There are more videos coming up on my channel. Roger’s Fishing is a huge project but I will continue to provide quality instruction on RUclips.
@@RogerOsborneFishing thank you...I'm on your waitlist as well...cheers
Great vid rodger very informative i might go over the weekend .😀😀
Thanks Robert. 👍
I'm quite new in Australia. I've been fishing overseas. I found this video amazing with new learning tips.. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
A most excellent video! Interesting, informative and all that you would want to know when targeting tailor or in my case shad.
Thanks Henk, Glad it was helpful!
Cheers Mate!
I am going to try the pilchard cubes this year. In SA we tend to tie all pilchards off with cotton / elastic.
One of the greatest sportfish worldwide😍💪🎣🎣🎣mighty blues... Pomatus saltatrix
Very very helpful content. I will definitely apply all the things I have learned from this video. It will be tailor season in QLD as winter season is coming in😬
Glad it was helpful!
Tailor is beautiful eaten raw. One of the best to make tartare. It really has the right texture for it
Love the videos mate..very helpful for amateurs like me trying to learn the craft 👍👌🎣 please do a video in the future about king fish...they are my enigma
Glad to help
Great vid, thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome vid, thanks Roger, Just signed up.
Awesome, thank you!
thanks for your talk.. I caught Tailor/Shad/Bluefish since I was 10 years old. This was in Africa-Durban. Another way to enjoy this fish is to dry the fillets.
Thanks Jayaram, sounds great!
Most of my fishing was done in the UK on lakes, canals and rivers, chasing big Carp and Pike. Since coming to Australia found beach/rock fishing to be a big learning curve.
Yes Phil, it would be quite different to fishing in canals. Stick with it and you will reap rewards 😃
Miss you Roger
Watched your video 2 days ago.. yesterday I went during lowtide and sunset for a cast... Caught 4 Taylor in 20 min.... Cheers 🎣
Nice work! Well done.
This was gold Rogi for beginners like me 🤘
Glad to hear, thanks for watching!
Thanks Roger, great stuff. I have a question for you. Can you catch taylor in Tasmania? I’ve learned so much from you, thanks again
Great video mate. Thankyou.
Envious of where you live 👌🏼👌🏼💪🏼
Thanks 👍
Where abouts on the south coast, Roger? Beautiful videos mate and thanks for all the tips
Thank you Roger for the great information!
In the process of releasing an undersize tailor, I got my fingers all stitched up with those needle sharp teeth and I realised how they got the name. 😅
Yes Nikhil, I stay away from those sharp teeth.
Shad is one of my best,if not my best tasting fish.
In South Africa our sad season closes 1st Oct to 30 Nov. Thats there peak breading time.
Thanks, great to hear from you.
💪 Lethal barbed fillet bait. 💪
Very good. It would be nice if you put the past video links for the trace for instance.
Great video! Wondering about that smoked tyler fish, if you could do a video about it, I think it would be a great idea.
Great suggestion!
Have Have just seen your video and great info. What hook size and make you using for the gang tracers? Many thanks from south africa
I have been catching these from 45cm right up to 51cm in the swan driver on hard body lures...they are an extremely powerful and good fighting fish to catch .
Hi Adam, That's good size for the river. The biggest that I have caught in recent times are several @ 63cm.
G'day roger I've always had trouble picking the difference between Taylor and salmon can you give us a demo of the difference
how cool. glad this came up in my recommended, even though i’m a novice and still learning on lighter tackle (7ft medium action rod, 20 lb or 8kg line); i didn’t know anybody would use salmon as bait! that blows my mind. Ok, so as a novice, my initial thought was why would anybody waste delicious salmon as bait?! Haha then again, where I’m at, my location, salmon is more expensive and considered a higher delicacy. I then realize that other places in the world like yall’s location maybe has so many salmon that you can just catch one yourself and use it for bait. How cool!
The Australian "Salmon" used as bait here are not the same species as the Atlantic Salmon.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arripis_trutta
most aussies give our type of salmon to the cat but do make good fish cakes
Hey Roger , great content and info mate , was wandering if you could share your process /brine for smoking them. Thanks .
Hi Paul, 40g each of brown sugar and salt per 1 litre of water to make the brine. Soak fillets in brine in the fridge overnight, remove from brine and allow to dry in the fridge for another day then smoke for approx 1 hour. Keep your eye on the fish when smoking, you don't want to dry it out.
I swear Tailor are smarter than other fish!
Plus they seems always angry 😂
Good advice. Being in South Australia I may never catch one. I got bitten off by something off a jetty over sand that in the 20 seconds of me seeing the flash and hook up it was gone. It wasn't a kingfish, or a trevally. Next time, I will be armed with gang hooks or a short wire trace eheheh.
As a perpetual novice and land fisherman this couldn't be more apt for me right now, having just added an 8ft Uglystik to my artillery, specifically to target in-shore Herring/Salmon/Tailor.
I've been learning a tremendous amount from your series which is especially relevant over here in Perth where the fish just don't come easy. There's an x-factor to your concise scripts and the end result is I make far more informed decisions between purchasing gear, setting up appropriately for the intended application and honing the right technique once I'm casting.
Thanks for going to the effort as it's certainly not wasted on me.
Hi Patrick, thanks for the feedback :)

Excellent info there.. Covers anythg a person need to know about the Tailor. In Turkei (İstanbul) we call it "Lüfer", aka king of Bosphorus. It is a beautiful and elegant fish. The way it fights when he is caught is uniquely different just as you described, shaking his head consistently in order to get the hook out of his mouth is a level of intelligence isnt it?. They say the bluefish caught in our waters taste the best compared to other regions of the world. Probably because of sea temperature or saltyness level. It is a highly expensive fish here, we catch it by trolling using needlefish as bait.
Hi there, Thank you so much for your comment!
🙏🏼
Hey mate do you have any idea of the fishing on Moreton Island? And if so do you have any tips?
Great video Roger. Can you please share your process for bleeding tailor?
Slit its thro4t 🔪
Good video as usual mate, and don't forget to bleed them for best eating quality
That's the plan! :)
Thanks very much Roger, very thorough and clear :) It would be wonderful to see how you smoke them. I am intending to buy or make a hot smoker for eels and other fish but I find it difficult to get any good DIY information. If you bought your smoker, what is the make? Thanks :)
Hi Sam, I bought an Aldi smoker. There is a company called "Hark" that makes smokers. They actually make the Aldi ones, obviously re-branded as Aldi.
excellent vid! Subscribed! What rig do you recommend for folks that can not have more than 2 hooks per rod?
Hi Ren, you can use 2 hooks ganged together. This is still effective and minimises being bitten off. I have another video coming up shortly with a secret rig that is deadly.
those teeth 😳😱
I'm curious about having the hook point coming out the flesh side of the slab bait. I was always taught have the hook protruding out the skin side it makes it tougher for the bait to come off
Hi Todd, the hook still has to go through the skin in order to come out the flesh side. It's holding on ability is the same. 😊
@@RogerOsborneFishing fair call, I'll give it a try next time out. Summer time for Tailor in Perth, for more fish. Winter you will still get the just not as many but generally bigger
Hi Roger, thanks for the Video. Do you need to bleed tailor immediately once caught if you intent to eat them?
Hi Trent, Yes you do.
Hey champ, great vid's, are you doing anymore. They are very informative.
Hi, Yes I am! There will be a lot more coming up very soon, right through Spring and Summer.
Hi Roger, what are your thoughts on Tailor in Qld? I'm in Brisbane. Do you think they would come into Moreton Bay? Or they prefer choppy surf? Cheers
Hi Don, I know that Fraser Island is a big Tailor Hot Spot, so I expect that there would be plenty in the Moreton Bay area. Ask the local tackle shops to see if they know anything :)
Hey mate, is that Tabourie Island in the background there? or Green Island at Manyana/Conjola maybe?
Hi Brad, it’s Tabourie Island.
@@RogerOsborneFishing awesome, I'm from Ulladulla and live in Wollongonf now, but I grew up around conjola. Great Salmon and Tailor country in this part of the world!
How to find deep hole in woolongong area pls
Hi Roger, I know this is an older video, wondering what size the ganged hooks are?
They seem smaller than 5/0, thanks.
They are 4/0 hooks
@@RogerOsborneFishing thankyou!
what is the named and sized of the hook used in the video?
How to find gutter in woolongong area
Fluorocarbon leader lengths on Mono mainline. Can it be fed through the rod eyelets, 1m or 2m.
Beach fishing rod lengths? 2m?
Beach rod 3 to 4.5 metres
I recently discovered your channel. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I’m recently retired and getting back into my fishing. I notice you use Alvey reels sometimes. Perhaps you could do a tutorial on Alvey? Not to promote them, more on technique and differences from spinning reels. I have been bothered by tangles around the reel, and wind blowing off the reel when it’s windy. I often feel the Alvey needs a proper ring guide closer to the reel (not just that metal curl thing). I may be the poor workman who blames his tools? Anyway, thanks for your channel. 🙂
Hi David, I have used Alvey reels for various fishing applications all of my life and absolutely love them. I have spent hundreds of hours fishing the rocks with Alveys, have landed some big Mulloway on them.
Do you fish with lures and soft plastics?? A vid on that would be great.
Hi Cheeseburger, thanks for the feedback, yes I do. Will be doing videos on that soon :)
@@RogerOsborneFishing Great, thanks Roger!
Going on a tailor fish for the first time next Sat. night. Your tips etc. will be useful. I'll post here what happens.
Great, thanks Alan
Sir , i live in Ascot 4007 Brisbane , could you tell me where i can catching tailor on the beach now ,today 22/07/2023 .thank you Sir.
Hello in the tilor rig how do you put the hooks into each other?
Thanks 🙏
Hi Barca, In Australia you can buy them already ganged. If you are not in Aust, you could buy some online or gang your own. Use 4/0 hooks, you can open the eye of the hook with pliers, put the next hook through, and then close the eye again, and so on :)
Are tailor common in Vic? I know we get some but don’t really hear much about them here
I'm not sure, but I'll let you know if I find out 👍
@@RogerOsborneFishing thanks Rodge
Do you have brine receipt for tailor please
Hi Neil, You can do a dry cure by making a mix of 30g salt and 30g brown sugar per kilogram of fish. Mix this together and rub it over the fillets. You can add some spices of your liking as well. Cure for 24hrs in the fridge, rinse off and pat dry. Allow to dry for several hours on a rack in a cool place and then smoke. Time depends on the thickness of the fillets.
Thanks Roger! I'm in W.A. and I have never seen anyone use beach worms or catch them- do you know anything about that?
Hi Harry, I'm keen to find out if there are Beach Worms in W.A. Can you ask around?
@@RogerOsborneFishing I have asked at the tackle stores here- it seems no one does it- I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
Do you tend to get more deep hooking issues with ganged hooks?
No, not really. The fish rarely swallow the ganged hooks.
@@RogerOsborneFishing Great, thanks Roger. Would love to see a video on soft plastics and lures. Also a video on catching Mulloway too!
Very informative - what size are the ganged hooks?
Hi Martin, the hooks are size 4/0
@@RogerOsborneFishing Many thanks - keen to try this technique
4202D's, in 4/0 or 5/0
Are you on fisherman's beach in port kembla?? If you are I'll share with you where I've been having great luck lately nearby!
Braeden, I am on Wairo Beach near Ulladulla.
@@RogerOsborneFishing lovely! If you ever feel like fishing a beach in the Wollongong area, I can point out some beaches I’ve had good success on.
Hey mate. I used this rig today for a quick fish. And the 2 times I reeled it in it was a big tangled mess. Bait also looked like It had been hit. Any idea why this has happened? Possibly crabs?
Alex, I'm not sure why that happened. Do you mean that the hooks were tangled up or the whole rig etc?
Mate, they freeze perfectly. They retain ALL their moisture and succulence. The trick is to spike them, bleed them immediately and pat them dry. Freeze them and then cook them whilst frozen. I've been a tailor fisherman for 40 years and that's all it takes to eat perfect tailor for months after their season. Yes, they smoke perfectly too, even from frozen, just brine them frozen for 6 hours and bung them in the smoker for 25 minutes.
Good to know! I'll definitely try that out next time, might have to make a video about it. Thanks for the tip!
You need to upload more consistently, you will take off!
Thanks for your encouragement👍
I think they are also known as “Chompers”.
