There's many theories about the origin of calling it a paternoster (literally 'our father') - from the story of St Peter using it to catch a fish in the new testament (a John dory , the circles on the side are supposedly his finger marks), to associations with monks, to its resemblance to rosary beads, to (as you suggested) naming after either the town in SA or Paternoster Row in London. One issue with it being named after Paternoster SA is that the town was only established/named in 1863, however the paternoster rig is mentioned by a fishing writer in 1653, & is probably even older than that.
It gets its name from the Latin phrase Pater Noster, which means “Our Father” - the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer in Latin. The origin of the term dates back to when people used beads to count prayers, with each bead on a string representing a prayer. In the paternoster rig, multiple hooks dangle from the main line, resembling a string of beads or knots, similar to a rosary or prayer beads.
🙏 What I like to say about you australasians is that you're about as far away as you can get from good old New York without getting closer. But the basic rigs you just showed us will work on the North Atlantic coast as well as on the seas you fish.
Hello Mr Osborne I particularly like this video because beginner techniques you show are easy to apply. I fish with pieces of shrimp, squid and sometimes fillet fish. Round hooks with upside down points or long hooks to be successful? Thank you 🙋
The distance between the swivels could be as much as 1.5m, depending on what length drop you are able to comfortably cast. this semi slide rig works very well for hook shy edibles and equally well for our local sandsharks and rays.
Ive been teaching teaching my dad how to fish off the beach with the second rig the world’s deadliest one we have caught something every session and most of them get caught on the stinger hook, thanks for all tips
The salmon down there in winter time used to drive me nuts - they were big and fought great but when you want a bream you want a bream! ripper video Roger !
Thanks Ian, yes, when you are fishing for specific species, the Salmon can be a pest. They often bothered me when I was fishing for Snapper off the rocks in Sydney.
Hi Roger. I really enjoy your channel. I live in the Western Cape province of South Africa. We have a coastal town named Paternoster where we fish for bronze bream from the rocks between bamboo (kelp). I think that's where the Paternoster rig comes from because the anglers there use it for many years myself included. Strongz with your channel. I love using your tips!!
Thanks Roger. Pater Noster means Our Father in Latin. It's the opening phrase of the Lord's Prayer. I guess it was used to name the rig cause the guy was praying for a fish.
Paternoster is a seaside fishing village on the west coast of South Africa situated between Sandanha bay and St Helena bay in the Western Cape province. chances are that the rig likely either originated from the fisher folk there or that it is a very common rig used in the area.
Some say the fishing rig got this name because St. Peter used a similar rig to catch a fish that was mentioned in a New Testament story. Others say Paternoster was the surname of the rig's inventor. But it is more likely the fishing rig is so named because it superficially resembles a rosary.
Often in South Africa on the second rig, we would add another lumo bead just above the sinker as well and add a second 30 to 50cm hook snoot to the bottom of the 2 way swivel with an appropriate size and type of hook for the fish being targeted (something like a 1/0 to 5/0 octopus beaked hook
Hi Roger, I am based in the UK and I wonder if your teachings applicable for the UK. How do I get beach worms and would your rig setup work here in the UK. Many thanks
Hi roger i’m wondering if you are on a budget but still wanted to go fishing what is the best method for rigging. I loved fishing now i lived in western australia
Hi Roger, new sub here, watching from northern California, just watched 4 vids back to back! Based on what I just watched your fishing sessions are in the late afternoon (more doable for me due to that thing called work!) would there be any difference if you fished in the mornings?
Roger Re:- Beach worms, you've had years of field experience and refinement .... seriously, [ laugh, but ] What is your preferred make/model of stocking??? is there one that lasts/works better, or????
I tried fishing thanks to your videos but im limited by my disability to were i can fish. I ended up under the bridge but into the wind and when i got bites my reel got so tangled i couldnt bring any thing in . Spent ages untangling line. What besides the wind am i doing wrong or was it just the wind?
That is frustrating, I find the same with the 3-way swivels. Are you familiar with the "T-knot"? It's a surgeons loop put through a dropper loop. Hey Skipper has a tutorial video. It helps the hook sit away from the leader.
Hi Roger. On your running sinker rig, do you let the sinker run on your braid line or do you have another length of say flouro leader where the sinker runs?
Roger Another great video. I can almost smell the salt. Pater Noster is Latin( I think) for Our Father, the Lords Prayer. I think it started when deep sea reef fishermen, who used that rig, dropped a bait over the side and said a silent prayer. As we do now!! I still don't have a new outboard.
Some say that Paternoster comes from the Christian association with fishing. St Peter was said to be a fisherman. Paternoster is Latin for “Our Father”. It’s another name for the Lord’s Prayer. The paternoster rig superficially resembles the paternoster rosary beads used to recite the Lords Prayer. But who really knows? 🤓🎣👍
No no yous have got it wrong there was a man named pat his wife was named noster well pat and noster got into a tangle where noster ended up on top of pat hence the names paternoster and also feck up 😂😂
Yeah yeah, yeah. everything works in the land down under, I challenge you to come to California and try the same here, Believe me, It's NOT going to work.
@@RogerOsborneFishing , From my experience, no. I have looked at all your videos and they are wonderful, I even applied all you have taught me to no avail. Here, what you would catch are just predatory fish, and I keep hearing from the locals, It's better to just go get a boat.
Paternoster is from the famous fishing port in the Northern Cape of South Africa called Paternoster.
Thanks for the info 😊👌
Actually Paternoster is in the Western Cape, Westcoast South Africa

🎣 read other comments, the paternoster rig or trace is from England, Many years before the village on west coast was built up, 🎣

Thanks mate. What is the second limo bead there for? And do you mean the 2-way swivel up the top (the one tied to the main line)?
Another good one Roger, when did you film this?, we were there last week from Monday through Thursday but it was blowing really bad...Cheers

Those rigs are commonly used in south Africa, be it for edibles or non. There are some variations.
What variations do they use in SA??

Hi Roger, I notice that you don’t use bait elastic. I would welcome your thoughts on it please
Is there a way to stop the bait on the paternoster rig getting tangled around the main line? Do I need heavy leader?
That is frustrating, I find the same with the 3-way swivels. Are you familiar with the "T-knot"? It's a surgeons loop put through a dropper loop. Hey Skipper has a tutorial video. It helps the hook sit away from the leader.
I don't normally have much trouble with it. I only get tangled occasionally, not enough to bother about.
Do you use the heads of your bait fish?
Why do you use a 3 way swivel and not a paternoster?
Pater Noster is Latin & translation is "Our Father" from the prayer which Jesus taught His disciples.

I had another comment that said it was named after the famous South African Port of Paternoster!
