20:43 a solution for your first problemen is a sturdy stick with a leather ball on the end. Rest the ball on a dry/safe spot and rest your brush hand on the stick.
I often rest my brush hand on my other arms hand, which rests on an object with the elbow. It still annoys me when I get myself in that situation though...
These are some beautiful shields. I want to thank you for making these videos, as they’ve inspired me to start making a pavise of my own, which has ballooned into me making greater process in my reenactment kit than I’ve made in months. Thank you!
Another interesting project! I just had a thought about a quicker way to transfer images onto the shield surface that might be useful for you. Have you ever come across a device called an episcope? It’s like an overhead projector but it doesn’t need a transparent print to project an image. It works by shining a light on a picture and using a mirror or prism to project it onto a surface. You’d probably get a little distortion but could be handy for jobs like this. I used one years ago for transferring images from a print onto a large piece of fabric for a theatre backdrop.

This channel is very much akin to the historical clothing channels. wont have millions of subs, but the subs that you do have will be loyal to a T. and use you in so many references.

Ich hatte eine Weisheitszahn-OP, und lauthals zu lachen bekommt mir gerade nicht so gut. 🤣🤣🤣 Noch ein kleiner Tipp am Rande (aber ich vermute, dass du's ohnehin weißt): Optisch kommt Zinkweiß dem Bleiweiß am nächsten. Das hat mit der Lichtstreuung zu tun. Dafür deckt Titan natürlich wesentlich besser. 🙂
Dankeschööön! Den Leinenstoff habe ich von Tolkostoffe und die Rohhaut ist von der Lederfabrik Renz, die habe ich in der Beschreibung verlinkt :) . Da bekommst du aber nichts unter einer halben Kuhhaut für 200€; für was kleineres würde ich am ehesten Provellus empfehlen. Die sind auc hauf ebay kleinanzeigen ;) . zu 16:38 : Auf den Witz bin ich auch ganz besonders stolz XD

Hey, nices Video! Für das Übertragen der Vorlage kannst du es dir noch einfacher machen, indem du auf die Rückseite einfach etwas schwarzes/rotes Pigment pinselst, wenn du durchgriffelst. Dann brauchst du nicht immer darauf zu achten wo dein Pauspapier ist. Außerdem stimme ich dir bei dem ausblutenden Schwarz zu, wenn du den Kreidegrund mit dem Leinölfirnis abölst saugt der das Bindemittel nicht aus deiner Farbe. (Am besten dick aufpinseln, eine halbe Stunde einziehen lassen und Überschüsse abwischen) Das Hilft auch für die Zukunft, weil die Farben sonst unterbunden sind und kreiden können. Ich wollte dir noch einen kleinen Tipp für das Azurit geben: in der Spätgotik wurde der Umgang mit Azurit perfektioniert und ein matter leuchtendblauer dicker Farbauftrag bevorzugt. Dafür wurde es oft mit Blau unterlegt und das Azurit nicht in Öl sondern in einem tierischen Leim gebunden. Ggf. kann dann die Oberfläche sogar mit Kratzwerkzeugen verdichtet werden um hellere Linien oder Muster einzuarbeiten. Dazu gibt es ganz tolle spätgotische Altäre/Skulpturen als Beispiele, meistens im Hintergurnd oder auf Marienmänteln wenn Lapis Lazuli zu teuer war. Ist vielleicht für dich einen Versuch wert. Außerdem wollte ich noch eine Anmerkung zur Reihenfolge des Farbauftrags geben: Weiße Highlights wurden immer als letztes aufgesetzt. Mit Bleiweiß ging das natürlich damals viel besser aber das Titanweiß sollte auch so deckend sein, dass du das Auge zum Beispiel auch auf das Schwarz aufsetzen kannst. Und zu guter letzt noch einen Sicherheitshinweis den du bestimmt schon kennst, aber sicher ist sicher: Lappen/Tücher die mit Leinöl getränkt sind nicht zusammenknüllen und in den Müll werfen. Das Öl erhitzt sich beim Oxidieren und kann spontan Feuer fangen. Besser die Lappen auf einer feuerfesten Unterlage ausgebreitet trocknen lassen oder in einem Feuerfesten Behälter entsorgen. Das wars, hoffe es hilft :)

Das werfe ich dann nach gebrauch auf den sägespänen/Holzreste Werkstatt Boden XD. die sind aber auch nicht voll getränkt, sondern haben nur Farbreste drauf :)
That was also my thought! I asked them to send me pictures in landscape format; but they only made Portrait format and that's just bollucks for a 16:9 video.......
My grandfather was a traditional bookbinder. He worked with some of the same materials for restorations. Smelly stuff, I remember. He did cut triangles in rawhide and linen when it needed to be folded around edges and corners, BUT not all the way to the edge. He would sort of fold the flaps, so there would be a continuous cover of the edge or corner. Hmmm. That's hard to explain in words. Do you sort of understand? I think the originals in museums are probably dried and decayed a bit to the point where it is hard to see if everything is still exactly where it used to be. Probably shrunk and distorted a bit.
Tahnks for your honest feedback! :) I linked all the museums pieces in the videos description. You can clearly see where the rawhide edges are under the basecoat. If it would have deformed, we would have massive cracks in the basecoat. I am ofcourse not sure wether I cut it exactly correct, but it looks 1/2 cm correct, I'd estimate ;)
Excellent work! You are a true and gifted craftsman. I was excited that you made a pavise shield since they were very common in medieval Lithuania. Painting the Imperial Eagle was a task in itself - What does the pattern on its chest indicate? Keep up the good work.
Hi, thanks for your feedback! The eagle is an often used motive. In this case it's the coat of arms of the town where the Pavese(s) come from, Schongau in southern germany, like 85km away from the Oktoberfest hehe. The blue-white rhombuses (it represents a sky with clouds) are a central part of the coat of arms of Bavaria, the region in southern germany.
The watertrick with the screwholes was nifty. I thought bees wax would be an option to close them entirely, but I guess that's an unnecessary effort. Didn't know to this day paveses could be that short, always thought they are Setzschilde for Crossbowmen and Archers. Anyway, the shields look absolutely amazing!
Thanks! The hide glue wouldn't stick to beeswax :( . I had to close some wood knots though; In order to do that, I mixed Sawdust with the 1:4 Hideglue. after it had dried I cut the excess with the boxcutters knive. I had to fill it in 2 or 3 times though, caus that kind of glue looses a lot of volume while drying.
One form ov Pavese that I've seen is the slightly smaller, arm-mounted version with a pronounced spike at the bottom/front. Have you ever tried one of those?

Thanks for the offer! I actually tried Rabbit glue bevore, but when something is connected to a hide, hide glue is better. Just google "Ochsenziemer 80cm" and you'll get plenty of results :)
schick, schick. Man hört sofort den deutschen Akzent. :) Welchen Sinn macht das Tragen einer Staubmaske wenn du sie nach dem Schleifen abzeihst und dann doch den Staub einatmest? Würde dir minimum nen kleines Absaugmobil empfehlen. Auch wenn du ungiftige Holzarten verarbeitest ist das Zeug sehr gesundheitsschädlich.

Außerdem habe ich für 3 bis 4 Stunden geschliffen und es ist was anderes ob man den Staub stundenlang einatmet, oder für 2 minuten bis sich alles gesetzt hat. Wie du klar erkennen kannst, habe ich einen guten Werkstatstaubsauger, aber für die Flex gibts kein Modul das auch nur 10% des Holzstaubes einsaugen könnte. Also wenn man eh die Athemmaske tragen muss, kann man sich auch das rumgefricke mit dem schlechten Absaugmobil+Staubsaugerschlauch sparen :(((

@@TheShieldery Ah yeah, I have seen a similar trick on a carpenters channel, but he used epoxi, but that wouldn't be very athentic in your case.^^
@@Haekeldrachen I saw something with Superglue (Sekundenkleber) and sawdust. You can hide cracks semales with that trick.

When you pull the screws out...why don't you just drill out the hole and put in another peg?
