Crafsman is a throwback to my reading rainbow days as a youth. A gracious, kind, and loving host who is doing nothing but spreading love and education.
I feel foolish for not even thinking paint masks exist. I always assumed there were just really skilled airbrush people working on assembly lines for toys. This is very cool!
I can relate. I got some funny looks from my fellow passengers on a train heading south through Portland OR about 20 years ago when I figured that out. I saw some Graffiti Artist at work a block or so from the tracks. They had cut some refrigerator boxes and other large shipping boxes into various shapes that several of them were using to make sharp lines and circles for things like eyes and planets(?) on the wall. Several industries ran through my head as I realized the ubiquity of masking dawned on me. I let out a loud "DUOI" as I smacked my forehead on the table in front of me. I got a mixed bag of looks from other people in the Observation Car I was in at the moment. 😅 The toy industry was one of the industries that went through my head during the epiphany. Others ranged from the Graffiti/Mural Industry to the Automotive Industry. I knew masking was a thing, but I never thought about its use like this beyond just logos on cars, for instance.
well some of them do airbrush and you can tell that the lines are sloppy. They use airbrush/normal brush were quantity and speed of production is more important.
listen, i in no way shape or form do any of what this man does. Crafsman, just the pure production value, the audio and the over vibes i get from just watching really makes my day! thank you for what you do! keep going!
Wow! Radio Shack antenna! Amazing! Perfect for tuning in those waves of nostalgia. I'm reading them loud and clear. Loved the video. I'd never thought about production painting like that before. Great stuff!
AMAZING!! Finally, someone that shows us how to solve a major problem!! I've asked so many Creators where they got their paint masks and I get the same answer and that is "oh, they were expensive to get made" but, they never, ever say who made the masks. Sometimes I would not get an answer. Thank you Crafsman!!😁
Crafsman, you are so stlyish and talented and generous! You are a role-model for me; I strive to embody your gentle kindness and wholehearted enjoyment of your work & play. I love you and your videos, thanks so much for everything you do.
Loving this series of sofubi videos SO MUCH - your advancements 'on the DIY side of things' is inspiring and encouraging...Five Points Fest was SO MUCH FUN, Hafta do it again next year for sure! xoxo
Crafman I appreciate you so, so much. Thank you for displaying this technique! Making reusable masks is such a great idea, it's one of those "why didn't I think of this before" tricks that once we learn about them, it's easy to implement.
It was SO MUCH fun rolling by folks, their jaws just dropped as he stopped by. It IS unexpected to bump into him. Saw a few folks stop walking, stare, literally shake their head, then smile and run over. We told some people he was going to FPF, but some folks didn't hear about it till it was over. Next year, people will have plenty of time to chat with him. Somethin' to look forward to for sure!
Wow, they turned out amazing! I love the black with the teal visor. Again, another cozy episode, I feel like it would be cool to hang out with you while you're working on stuff or even help you. The creative energy is probably strong in the room when you're there :)
Thank you so much for this video! I build, paint and play Warhammer 40k models, but I was unsure on how to approach doing the symbols on the shoulders of my space marine models. I will try making a mold!
I've worked with a lot of spray painters, and the masking they do is by far the biggest part of their job. If there is a way you can assembly-line masking, you beat the game.
It does work, and I've seen it used successfully, but personally cutting the thin thermoplastic material I've found difficult to *not* mess up. But I'm not the most careful either, LOL!
I started watching this while I was painting a figure and thought "That's pretty nifty!", but then I went on to paint the figure without any masking and had to start over. Still nifty, though! Great video, thanks again!
"Til it looks like some grape bubbalicious." You just gave me a blast from the past! I need to get some for old time's sake. Edit: Those black astronauts were dope. The color of their visors suggest they're floating through space looking at a galaxy.
Where was this video 3 days ago when I painted all 20 of my little isopod figures 😢 thank you so much craftsman this will help me SO much for my next batch🎉
Great idea! If your models were sculpted digitally you could use the extract function in Zbrush to easily create a form-hugging paint mask and 3d print it, putting all the supports on the outside for a clean print.
Snap, that would be SLICK! I've heard mention of 3D-printed masks but I'm curious about the *fit* because the pieces would come out not exactly the size printed. More of an issue with resin printers than FDM, I imagine. P.S. I've seen screen recordings of folks using Zbrush and it looks like the closest thing to digital clay that I've seen. (My 3D experience is a couple decades old. LOL!)
The purple and pink astronauts are just too cute!! These quick and easy masks are such a good idea too, i think it might be possible to 3d print them so that you can flip it and get symmetrical designs on either side too! :D
These are brilliant Crafsman. This is something I’ve often wondered about, but so far haven’t had a project that needed it. Thanks for experimenting and sharing!!
Thats genuinely auch a cool idea! Its amazing to see your skills grow over the years and youre so awesome with how much you share to help others learn too.
What about latex? You could apply it to the areas you don't want painted and make a few coats of it and once cured you make a last layer with plaster soaked paper to add rigidity. This is a method used to make big moulds but it will likely work well as it's pretty thin and flexible.
This could work! The brushable type or (I've even heard) "liquid frisket" (if I spelled that right) used in painting as a resist for negative blocking / masking. :)
Im bummed that I missed your first sofubi release. Please tell me you will be having a second run... This is some great info for masking. I always enjoy your content. Thanks for putting in the hard work for us!
last week I was researching this and found only China Factories showing 3 second videos and here you are answering my question. Thank You. One question could these be 3d printed and then layered with silicone?
Sorry about that! Often times I don't "hear" it as much (I'm just getting the *words* across) and my wife will go "Why do you sound so SAD right there?" LOL. My bad y'all. There are times where what I said was ruined by the dehumidifier, so what you hear is me trying to run a high-pass on the "bad" audio to cut out my voice and keep the higher frequency handling noises... THEN I'll lay in a voice back over the top. Not my preferred way, but with the heat and humidity like it's been, I've had to do it repeatedly. I've got three different mics (four in this vid if you count the iPhone) also and the shotgun vs. the dynamic mic will make a difference too.
I saw the other day a video of a manufacturing plant in China and they used these type of masks to cover up a clear canopy for a Batmobile toy And it's pretty much like how you made yours.
No specific tier - it's open to all Patreon supporters. :D It has done well (THREE updates/"drops" in two days) and we're adding more to it. Thank you for asking!
Craftsman, if we’re making doll figures (maybe some BJD, maybe just static and not moving figures), what material would you recommend? They would be about half the size of a phone, for example. Does it make sense to use vinyl for dolls?
Most masks were and are made by electroforming metal over what your painting usually in two pieces but sometimes more think of how a mould is made than they would be soldered onto a metal clamp for a two part mask or you would just hold the item onto the mask and paint
Craftsman where you find that Radio Shack at, man??? Dang I been needing a late 1980's version Radio Shack. You know what I mean. Not a cellphone store but a place to get things good for doing electronics crafts
There's a small town not too too far from us that had up until recently a Radio Shack. Although it was technically under a different business name, it had all the signage, and the complete setup in the back with all the electronics components. I was able to get all those antennas for about $1 each. But yeah mannn, I used to just about HAVE to go into a Radio Shack whenever we were somewhere that had one. I'd always wind up buying a battery holder or LED or motor or... LOL! :D
@@TheCrafsMan We've got a place called 'You-Do-It' up this way; it's a little out of the way, and if you're trying to take the train, it's really a long walk from the Green Line... and not You-Do-It is all history anyways. I think they closed forever last month. I definitely know what you mean, though - I'd always go in and get *something*
Ive seen small run injection molded keychains from china that have several colors. Im wondering how their molds were made to achieve it. There is very fine detail... radiomaster keychains that come with their radios for example. Its not painted either. The colors are injected at different stages/sources or something
Oh yeah, it's totally possible to inject different colors. Those injection molds are impressively complicated sometimes, with extra "action" and allowance within the mold mechanism for "insert molding" and "overmolding" (Overmolding is used in situations where you'd have like a rubber/grippy surface injected over a rigid surface, like in automobile handles and stuff. An insert molding example would be a metal screwdriver shaft that gets placed inside the mold and plastic injected around it. But the same can be done with multiple colors of plastic.)

I wonder how far you can take this. People who paint Warhammer armies do every detail by hand multiple times in some cases.
Yeah I found out about them researching toy making factories and stuff. I was trying to figure out a way to 3d print them. Still working on it

Did not know what the title meant, fully went into this like 'I don't think homemade PPE is very safe, but crafsman said it, so I trust the processs'
Shows how weird the English language can be at times. My first interpretation was that he was going to be using latex paints to make a mask.
The trust is real

It occurs to one that once you have one resin mask you could then use silicone to make dupe masks and your could paint many items at the same time.

taping off figures to mask parts is such a tedious task, i may just sculpt up one of these for some of the figures i paint a larger batch of
