Safe trip to Berlin
Erwin. ( & Josh) Ye me too on that train route. Last time I went I went through "CHECKPOINT CHARLIE" but not a lot different other than a lot of guns, dark streets and mainly "Trebandts"! I was about 18 and shittin myself! Whilst in East Berlin.

When you booked your ticket to Berlin, you should have booked to Berlin-Schoenefeld. The ticket would have been the same price, and you wouldn't have to buy an additional ticket for the S-Bahn! (money saving tip)
Also to go to the airport it is easier to change at Südkreuz instead of the Hauptbahnhof

To be honest Josh! I think I had the best time in Europe when I visited Germany! They are such beautiful and nice people! I’m not sure what sort of a situation you had to face but to me, they were so supportive when I made my travel videos! 🙏
Interesting to hear your rant. I've made a few trips to Germany and my impression/experiences have been positive. Nice people, clean and efficient public transport. That said I was not filming!
I've never had problems in Germany either, and I go there regularly. Again, I don't film. Probably makes a difference.

@Thordur Hogna Yeah it is illegal to film/photograph people in germany if your planning on publishing the video/photo. There is a law surrounding the right to your own picture. The only exception are people in the backround on public spaces, thats another law called the freedom of panorama which allows you to film or photograph in these public spaces and to publish them, but u will still need permission from people who are in the direct foreground. He is also inside a train which is a private space owned by the DB - Deutsche Bahn, so the staff of the train has the so called "Hausrecht" which would translate into something like house authority, so technically they can enforce company rules inside the train, which could be that filming is not allowed.

that's true in Germany you pay for using a toilet, in many other countries you pay for using bridges, tunnels, highways or if you visite a medical doctor.

Being from Southern California, I loved traveling on DB all over Germany! From the smallest bahnhoffs to the major HBFs it was always a cool experience

Careful with filming people (as in having them in focus in the foreground). It's illegal if you don't have their permission. Holds true for most of the EU.
9:52 I find germans (and the french) refreshingly honest, as in you're encouraged to speak directly about what you actually think of without the infinite hoops of politeness and such.
Would rather have a somewhat grumpy restaurant host than an overly nice one who speaks to you as if they were a husband with a sudden rush of tenderness towards his wife.

@@TheoRetish Don't know where you got these numbers from, but they are bullshit and only count if you use the Deutsche Bahn's own definitions of punctuality which are "less than 6 minutes too late is punctual" (79% - 88% for long distance trains depending on the month) or ""less than 16 minutes too late is still punctual" (90% - 95% for long distance trains depending on the month).

When I was stationed in Germany as a member of the U.S. armed forces (in Heidelberg, from mid-1978 thru early 1981), I rode the trains around quite a bit when I could. Always enjoyed the ease of train travel there. Just go down to the Bahnhof ticket window, state your destination (and generally specify a round trip ticket) pay the fare (then very reasonable, no idea what the levels are today), find your train on the schedule, and off you went. No giving your name, address, etc., nothing like that. (Try doing that today in the U.S. on Amtrak). Generally no reservation needed for riding 2d class coach, although specific seats could be reserved in first class. Transfer trains as much as you want, just mention to the conductors where you have changed trains so far on the way to your destination. Marvelous how those electric German trains got up to speed so fast, at times they must have done up to around 100 miles per hour. (Almost nothing like that in the U.S. even today.) The trains were generally always on time. (Try that on U.S. Amtrak----my return trip to Chicago IL from Rochester NY last November was almost three hours late, and getting to Rochester was around 45 minutes late.) It would be interesting to return after almost 40 years now; I was tentatively thinking of doing a trip to Heidelberg next year, and taking in Zurich Switzerland also, to or from Germany by train, but of course now that is likely off the table. I am certain Heidelberg has changed some, and especially since U.S. Army Europe sadly is no longer headquartered there, with the sizable facilities it once had at the edge of and just outside the town---one of which I was billeted/quartered at. I found out only a couple months ago that a tram line was built on the main street that runs by that former kaserne (base), in 2006.
Oh, and at the Heidelberg hauptbanhof the cafe served some marvelous hot chocolate alcoholic drinks, one in particular was called a 'Russian Chocolate'. I presume it contained vodka, but not 100% sure. I really can't find any reference to it online, and have never seen or heard it mentioned here in the states. Must be a European specialty, then. Another was called a 'Karabick', or something very like that. (Anyone who might happen to know more definite details on those, pls. let me know in a reply.)
I heard that Biden will improve railway system in the States, as he's die-hard fan of Train. I wish Biden would develop Amtrak to have European/Japanese quality

I was at a train station in Austria and the toilet seat started spinning around and cleaning itself after you flushed, it startled me I had no idea what was going on at first
That exists in Germany too
Some years ago, even a german train had this feature of self cleaning toilet seats. It was the Metropolitan ("MET") business traveler train. The two trainsets are still running, but they removed this feature just after the end of MET service many years ago.

I was in Berlin just a few weeks before the Covid-19 Lockdown and had a great time. It was probably the best European city break I’ve ever had. The city has so much history. I also flew into SXF on Ryanair, used the train into the city - all very convenient. Looks like the new airport will eventually open in a few weeks from now. I can’t wait to try it out myself!✈️
What London airport did you use, and how much was the fare at the time?

Good to see you on a train Josh! I was in Germany in Jan 2019 and took trains from Frankfurt to Bonn then to Eisensch, Leipzig and Berlin. I visited the great composers birthplaces , Beethoven (Bonn) and Bach Eisenach - Leipzig ) I liked the station at Leipzig. It’s huge! I also did the first class Europass. It was well worth it! But I often got confused as whether the carriage was at the front or back.. I walked miles with all my luggage! And it was snowing a lot. I loved the trains. To sit and watch the scenery go by was breathtaking. I always ask for a high floor and room with a view as well! Lol good on you! I enjoy your videos!

Josh, have to disagree with your comments on the German people. I spent 2020 new year in Berlin for 7 days and loved every minute of my trip from Australia. The people were great, so very friendly and welcoming. We flew from LTN to SXF with no problems and the DB travel to Berlin was so easy. I worked in FRA for some time also and loved the beer and the people. I would highly recommend any travel in Germany to all of my friends. Love your channel by the way :)
As a fellow Aussie I agree. Spent 14 months there in 2005/6 and travelled all around the country (missed Munich sadly) and loved the place. So many beautiful places to visit and as you say, I found the people to be friendly and welcoming.
I find the German people honest, charming, friendly, and helpful. I have no idea what you came across. And I love Bavarian humor.

I love Germany! Longing to be able to go there again. We went to Leipzig station a few years ago, but the left luggage office was closed and the lockers provided were too small for our suitcases, so we had to stay in the station and not explore the town, as we had hoped to do. By the way - yes, you do have to pay (that's why we call it spending a penny!), because the loos normally have attendants and someone has to pay their wages!
I really loved this video, I live in a country ( Canada) where rail travel never really got off the ground and our train system just isn't on the same level as in Europe. One of my favourite parts about travelling in Europe is taking the train to different cities ( Mom and I travelled in Spain using the trains for close to 3 weeks). More of these Josh please, really good information to know when I eventually make it to Germany.
5 hours from Toronto-Union to Montreal-Bonaventure on the shore of the Lake Ontario two years ago. Then from Montreal-Bonaventure to Ottawa-Union... It was an experience, different than Fulda to Hamburg or Berlin... Don't compare Canadian train travel to German. In Canada, they do not allow waiting on the platform, they will call for boarding like at an airport. In Germany you can wait for the train on the platform.

They are also Airport Express trains (RE7 or RB14), which run very 30 minutes from the main station to the airport way quicker than the S-bahn does and they also require the same tickets so they should always be your way to go.

The steam locomotive is a class 52 "Kriegslok", dating from World War 2.
It represents one of the many variants of the Typ 50 class machines, which underwent a constructional simplifications due to the necessities of war, the examples of which were labelled as type 52. The original type 50 class was designed as a middle to heavy freight loco, being able to be put in service on smaller local or secondary railways, too, due to her low weight per axle. Because these smaller branch lines wouldn't often be equipped with a turn-table of the size necessary for this type she was planned to be able to reach her top speed of 80 kilometres per hour - forwards as well as backwards, unlike many - if not most - of the steamers of that time.
The type in general is seen as one of the most successful constructions of the DRG (Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft) and due to the large number being built of it, this machine still makes for the backbone of many German museum railways.
This steam engine BR 52 was in operation between 1943 and 1986.
You can easily identify German locomotives by the code:
It starts with the class (class 52 in this case). The second block is the engine number and the digit behind the dash is a check digit.
If the class number has only two digits, it is a steam locomotive.
If the first digit is a "1" it is an electric engine, a "2" stands for a diesel engine, "3" is a small engine (usually a switching engine), "4" is an electric railcar (including the ICE), "6" is a diesel railcar.

More interesting than the class 52 steam-loco from WWII might be the neighboring object on the Museum Track, a Reichsbahn multiple unit Class 137 streamlined diesel bullet-train originating from 1935 and painted in cream and violet like the "Rheingold" luxury train. With a regular maximum speed of 160 kph and average speeds of up to 132 kph these were the first high speed trains in Europe, when average speed in long distance rail traffic was 60-90 kph. It is an ancestor of todays ICE-Fleet.

8:35 "Berlin never had a main station because it was divided in east and west" That's not quite right. Before WW2 Berlin had a number of terminuses, one for each mainline arranged in a circle around the city centre, like London and Paris still do to this day. None of them was the "main station", they were all equal in serving only one route each, and if you wanted to interchange you hat to commute through the city to a different station. The war and even more so the division messed this old system up leaving a quirky "non-system" at the time of reunification. It was then decided to rearrange it all to make interchange easier, and now Berlin of course does have a main station in the centre, and a number of suburban stations of which Südkreuz is one.

I lived in Frankfurt for a year, and whilst I have met many great individuals, as a country that is a good way to sum it up - “grumpy and miserable” but there is so much to be happy about in Germany so I don’t understand this. I used to cycle to work but I was stopped by police for going through a pedestrian crossing although there was nobody in sight, I suppose they were right and they asked me if we had traffic lights in the U.K. !!!
I live in Frankfurt now and the people are like the weather gloomy. It is a beautiful city so I'm not clear why they're like this.

Moving to Germany soon with my Husband and I am very glad for this video. I LOVE learning about all the cool and interesting things that I will encounter while I am there. I AM definitely looking forward to traveling by train to many places! I expect it to be awesome. I really got a laugh when you mentioned the restrooms there and that they make you pay. My thought is if the restroom is nice and Clean and gives a wonderful experience when used and is properly upkept then I don't mind paying for it.... free bathrooms are usually so gross. It. could also be money that creates a job for a bathroom attendant idk. I like it.
You must pay because everyone want a very Clean Toilet so it is very easy to Understand. The people Who clean it also must be played for their work.

Well I live in Germany and they don't do that good of a job cleaning them. They're not really worth paying a whole euro for. Japan has pristine toilets everywhere and they're all free to use for example. Using the toilet is a basic necessity and paying for it is still weird
True, only normal. Can't expect a train station to just clean for free when you have like 100million people coming through every year.
On the Autobahn you can most often take a piss for free at non-gas station places. But then you get what you don't pay for: dirty ass shit, literally.

Did the journey both ways between Berlin/Leipzig on ICE Ist Class last Christmas so your review brought back memories. As for the receptionist at the Inter-City at Schönfeld she was probably having a moment of déjà vu and thought you were from the Stasi! Oh and as for the awfulness of the airport, from my point of view it's a very close run thing beween Schönfeld and Tegel!!

The main perk of First Class is that it is much quieter and less crowded than Standard Class. It is definitely worth paying the extra if it is only around 10 to 15 Euros.
I visited Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and I had to pay to go the bathrooms in all 3 countries
But I can definitely say that I enjoyed traveling on these trains they where on time and it was very fast and easy to get around in germany and more

LOL.. on the subject of paying for a bathroom was either Gatwick or Heathrow was long time, but I crawled under the stall and got caught because I didn't want to pay. Hi there! I'm, using 1st class ICE nearly every day and have a Black Ticket - the Bahncard100 which gives you access to any German longdistance train. And yeah, at the board restaurant they don't want people to occupy seats, sipping a coffee and working on laptops or disturbing other people. That is why they ban computers and mobiles there. They even stated that on the menue earlier ;-) - and that also goes for RUclipsrs... it's Germany: Rules are rules! ;-)
BTW: That old locomotive you saw was build in 1943 in western prussia (today Poland) and belongs to a club of train-enthusiasts in Leipzig.

It's worth noting that our larger stations in England have always had pay-to-use toilets. It's only very recently that has changed

As far as I know, the train with the age-old steam locomotive is actually a Railway museum. Probably this is the one which is a part of the Saxon Steam Railway route. The museum has no fixed opening hours. A reservation for a visit or a guided tour of the museum is required. If I am not wrong, the locomotive Saxonia was operated by the Leipzig-Dresden Railway Company and was the first practical working steam locomotive built in Germany!
If I have a train trip, I never go to one of the public toilets at the station because I can use the one onboard the train for free anyway.
Sometimes I even hopped on a train to use that toilet and got off again - but I can only recommend that if you are 100% familiar with the train schedule.

I studied there for 7 years. And through that years as an international student i've had friends with different nationalities. Without a doubt, every single one of us has been experiencing racism. Openly. But to be fair, there is a lot of good people too there. It's just the people feels different and often times unfriendly. Deutschland über alles i guess. Love the video by the way. Steam engine BR52 used between 1943 and 1986. It was the most produced steam engine of that time. A few of them were used in east Germany.
I love starbucks! The coolest two I've been to are two ones in London. They are right under the towerbridge at the Thames. Very pretty to sit down. The one at Amersfoort trainstation is pretty nice too. Very calming one and if you look outside you can look to platform 1 and 2 of the station. And in NL its pretty normal too to pay is you have to use the lavatories

Charging for toilets is very popular across stations in Europe, you will get it in particular in Central Europe but you also get it in the UK, it's kind of like there's no way out of it...I love the concept of the ICE train, it's on the top of my list for trains to try! It's interesting how you found the seats comfortable on the ICE4 as they have had some criticism, where they the replaced ones? I love Berlin, I've gone past the HBF but never seen inside apart from passing through on the RE train to Schonefeld, but I would love to see it properly one day!
Honestly, I loved the older ones a lot more since they had proper padding, but I don't think the new ones are too bad either.

I love going to Starbucks. And my favourite Starbucks here in the Philippines is Starbucks Twin Lakes. It has a very beautiful view of Taal Lake and it's nice to drink hot coffee while enjoying the cool climate there.
The Loko is a Series 52 Model . The Loko with perhaps the biggest production number in Steam Loko history. Ir was build during the war predominantly for military transport. After the war many of those survived in eastern Germany. It was the workhorse at the east german railroad until diesel and electric Lokos took over.
Ich vermisse Berlin! Seeing the S-bahn makes me miss living there so much! My favourite Starbucks was in Kyoto! Very traditional style building, can see in my vlog hehe :) Keep up the good work!

I just watched this video, three years after you uploaded it. I visited Berlin and Munster in 2015. I had a great time. No one was disrespectful to me because of my black skin. I noticed there were so many foreigners in Berlin. Turkish was the second most widely spoken language in Berlin when I visited. Munster was nice as well. I stayed in a small town called Rinkerode. There were hardly any immigrants living there and very little English was spoken. Despite all that, I managed to get by and enjoyed my holiday.

I'm Indonesian, who've been living in Germany for more than 20 years. I was also quite angered about the attitudes againts the customers/visitors from many of public toilet operators (you have to pay to use a bathroom). This was until I visited Peru last year and almost always had to pay to use a bathroom. The only difference was, that I've paid in Peru to use a bathroom, I've got 3 or 4 sheets of toilet papers (it's enough for big business but only for pros) and the bathrooms were often rather dirty.
Funny to see you in Germany😄 German Trains are nice, but I miss my train riding through Pakistan - there it’s adventurous!😍
