It's fucked up ....Humans should not feel sad or emotional about a Bot or vice versa. But here we are .... definitely had me bumming for #2. From the get go
So the first robot he makes is basically a walking talking fridge, the second one is a gorgeous natural looking woman ! Great leap forward! 100 years of progress in twenty minutes !

From his own perspective, it is very sad that his consciousness would die the very day he succeeded in putting his wife into J3. Maybe the director is trying to get us to reflect on our own efforts towards goals that might not even exist when we get there
here i am, think 2 or 3 is going to be the killer robot in the final fight; only to find-out the protagonist was already dead

I don’t think so, the box will likely be reused for another client, so they must make sure the box “forgets” the scientist.
From a different recap, the 3rd prototype was pretending to be his wife after she herself realized afterwards that he was the one who's really dead and in a memory box. Reason why she tells him not to answer the call cause she already knew who was going to be on the other line. You can almost look at it as the 3rd prototype was his subconscious trying to keep him from knowing the truth. The reason why the memory box would be failing faster is how complex his own mind was building "A.I." robots. If you look at each prototype, each one would represent a finite moment in his life. The 1st prototype be his childhood years were he didn't get to choose so the reason for no arms. The 2nd prototype being his teenage years showing he was immature and apparently tried to commit suicide before. So if you look at it this way, everything started failing cause his memory's of his childhood would just been wiped out of memory when he couldn't find the 2nd prototype. The 3rd prototype would actually be his subconscious finally being put into a body would fragment his mind even further. It's almost like a person going thru dementia in a 5 year span.

The memory boxes remind me of a novel I read called Ubik, where people could communicate with the dead Who believed they had lived after their death. With a dozen exceptions the memory box is very similar to the mortuarys in that novel all the way down to the phones.

I just finished watching archieve for the first time.. Holy shit i loved it.
It made me cry my eyes out. Such a beautifully tragic movie with such an amazing plottwist about moving on, death and loss.
It hit me so damn hard, as I lost my father unexpectedly three years ago and haven't been the same since.
