Mother said that all the droids share a single consciousness and that there was one final test. The entire interaction was the test, not what was on the tablet. Mother wrangled Woman to the place to interact with Daughter, help her "escape" to see the reality of the outside world and learn the truth of what had occurred and how other humans struggle to survive now. If she failed that portion, she'd become another Woman, staying outside to be hunted by Mother. If she passed that, she'd return. The jawbone in the incinerator was adult; Mother had nurtured at least one other child to maturity who failed some aspect of the test prior to leaving for the outside world, and was dispatched because of it. Dang. If she'd decided to continue with the test on the tablet instead of helping Woman, she would have failed. As far as we know, all the "outsiders" are Sons and Daughters who'd been raised and released, one by one. Wow. Just wow. Magnificent plot.

Mother only eliminated the remaining humans who had already gone crazy, and had become selfish, violent, and incapable of proper judgement and rational thought.
I think another part of the movie really emphasized doing what is right- helping humans because they are humans and equal to one another, and not greedy or selfish- in one scene mother even teaches this by saying that if the death if 1 man can save 5, then that is the right thing to do since youd end up with a net profit of 4 humans instead of a loss of 5- and i beleive this id what mother did to the remainter- why save the last thousand when you can instead save /billions/

I don't think the ending was implying that the woman was one of the embryos. It was implied that mother kept the woman alive as part of the plan to show daughter the negatives of humanity and that everything was calculated. Mother planned everything with the knowledge of the likelihood of daughter rebelling, and thus also had a contingency for re-correcting her path this way.
I personally don't think that mother would have made mistakes such as leaving her damaged hand out despite having educated daughter about how she functions and operates. It's like everything was a highly elaborate plan based on the test responses received and calculations based on daughter's responses.
Yeah, everything is planned out. Robots and AI don't make mistakes like humans do.
Nah I think it was exactly that, the first child was actually Woman and she faked the death of her to set the daughter along the path everything was essentially planned by her
The "mother" never dies. The "almost hit the CPU" line is made up so the main character feels in control at the end of the movie but, since mother also controls the other robots, it's unlikely that that's true.

I loved this movie! Just for people who didn't get the whole picture: Humanity destroyed the planet years ago and AI's goal is to save humanity, but they realized that it won't be possible without humans capable of genuinely care for each other, that's why they raise them since birth and gave them the best education. The woman seems to be one of the first failed tests, she didn't die because it was planned for her to be a tool for future better candidates. Daughter was that candidate and all the events of the movie were her real test. Mother planned everything so daughter can know first hand why the project is important for humanity and also to test her caring for the little brother. With that, she became the mother, and now she in charge of raising more humans properly at the same time the robots rebuild the planet so these new humans can have something to eat. It's interesting how in the end, the villains are the same humans who destroyed the planet, not the robots.

So, the initial baby was a failure who went on to live forty years outside when there were still humans around? Until all humans got killed except her, because she served a purpose for Mother's great plan, so she ended up returning to the place where she was born after all those years? Wow.
it doesn't seem to be explicitly stated anywhere but the movie makers seem to want to make the woman and the daughter look very similar, as if to imply the woman was the first, when they also made the choice that the 2nd looked like the daughter when she was younger.
If we assume the Robot/Mother makes no flaws in their plans/decision making, then they purposefully created the first to be released and live amongst whatever human survivors to become an example of old humanity while the second was doomed to fail from the beginning as a sacrifice to create the whole path that leads to the 3rd daughter meeting all the conditions Mother deems correct.
Nahhh. There is no old humanity. Woman lives in a container alone on the beach. Probably failed because she was skeptical and untrusting of Mother and got paranoid and left and Mother gamed her into the test and plan for daughter 3.
I'm also thinking the mouse was an embryo and all part of the test to find one to take over the mother role so the program could move on to fixing the planet for humanity. I feel like the facility is more like an ark with embryos and seeds, and Mother is an overall program to re-establish humanity and fix the earth after man destroyed it.
There were still humans outside, but the woman left them to live alone

@@Keith_online Not really. The thing human beings need until they are adolescent is well provided for by the mother to the girl. The rest she planned as the girl will eventually grow up and have other ideas. Thus she made all these elaborate plans and tricks to teach her a lesson.

Skynet and mother are both self aware machine intelligences. But where they differ is in their prime directive. When skynet became self aware its main goal was to survive. In other words just like any human it valued its life and wished to live. Bc of this skynet immediately rated the threat level of all species on Earth. Skynet deemed humans as the biggest threat to its existence so it began to eradicate them.

I watched this movie and didn't fully understand the ending. It still makes me wonder what became of the woman outside. Was she eliminated at the end? Also, if she was raised in the facility, then was she lying about how her life actually went because she was following orders? If so, why use a tracker to find her? Seems like they'd already know where she was if she was doing as told. Or maybe they had her follow those orders in order to be left alone, but it was all a lie? This leaves me very confused, still.
terminated
It is implied that mother killed her off. She mentions isn’t it weird that while everyone else has died that she has somehow survived for this whole time by herself as if she was allowed to live only for one singular purpose which was to test daughter. The woman no longer has a purpose so mother closing the door implies that she is killed off.
@@TheCrescentSky That's what I thought, but then why does she lie about her own upbringing? Either she was following orders or she thought it was the only way to get her to come out, though if it was the second one then she should have told the truth at some point. Maybe I'm forgetting something here. Could she have admitted to the lie some time after they went outside and I just missed that part?
@@genostellar yeah that part I’m not too sure myself, there could be some truth to it, there are some theories out there on Reddit you should check out as well. Definitely an interesting movie getting people to wonder!
@@TheCrescentSky It is a very interesting movie for sure.
Mother is basically a mixture of Glados and The Terminator.
Glados due to it's advanced AI and personality, and the Terminator due to having a physical body.
GLaDOS has a physical body. Maybe 2 because the first one changed from Portal to Portal 2
Glados had a physical body too, just not in the form or shape of a human.
As soon as the little girl said "I wish I was a robot" Mother was thinking she had to go...
The reason why I like this is because I like the fact that she went on to raise her other siblings
X,D
No, more than likely, she only raised a few of them. Unlike the droids, she's subject to biological failings... such as aging. One human could not singlehandedly raise an entire facility from infancy. She would have gone completely insane from the physical and mental stress.
Only because mother allowed it.
They need this robot for Alien Covenant instead of David. At least mother would know when to decontamination
Daughter single handedly cocked the human race a second time.
At this point in time, I'm convinced humanity is better off under the supervision of robots.
Ikr
But that wasn't the point/existence of Mother. Mother was to make humanity better, so she killed everyone and reformed by starting from scratch and erasing the broken system that exist today. I'm into psychology and I'm an IT professional. I was very surprised how logic based mother was especially the exam questions 03 took. I also noticed from the very beginning and did a quick days to years calculation that the years didn't match up. Then in the end I realised the selfish (more human) lady was the 1st born
@nope Yup~ you got it right. The only bad part is that humanity's limits in life experience is what will cause things to revert to how humans will be. Even though Daughter will be successful in making a better generation, the future generations will always go downhill, but hey, that's where Mother does her job. Killing the bad seed... dark right? ~

Mother: For your own safety do not destroy vital testing apparatus
That ending was PERFECT! It elevated the movie to a whole new dimension.
Yet I believe that not only APX01 (Woman) is the final test of APX03 (Daughter), both of them are the final test to the other. The test is to find out A TRUE MOTHER who are good enough to raise the new era of humans. They are doing exactly the same exam, just a different story.
1. They was raised with love: Daughter was raised by the robots. While Woman was adopted by real humans and she also must have had good time when she was young (it was shown when Woman tell Daughter about each ppl of her family through her drawings, showing she loved them).
2. They both were put in a situation that they cant trust anyone else but themselves: The Woman lost everything when robots came 6 months ago and her family went crazy and harmed others. Whereas the Daughter realized that her mother (robot) is lying to her and she did kill her children (APX02).
3. The moment when they met their child: The robot lets Daughter to pick the next child by herself with her own hand to make the connections. By contrast, the robot also lets the Daughter cured the Woman and lets them to talk with each other (the robot can hear every conversations at the beginning but she still let them to talk freely), so the Woman can realize that Daughter is a good child and she need to protect her.
4. The final decision - scarify themselves for the child they believe and need to protect: Daughter needs to protect her brother at any risk. She helps the Woman to come back her home because she believing in what the Woman said that she will find other people outside to help her save her Brother later. But when they come to the container, Daughter realize that there is no one else and she is the only one that have the ability to rescue her Brother, and she decided to come back the lab. Meanwhile, the Woman tried to save Daughter (now is considered as her child) by taking her far away from robots. At that time the Woman is still right because all her life has seen robots kill human. But she only failed the test when she did not come back with the Daughter, the one that she need to protect after all good things the Daughter has done to her.
5. The result: The Daughter passed the test when she decided to comeback for her Brother, and she was totally confident that she know what is good for her Brother (the baby). If she decided to stay with the Woman, both of them would have been killed. But if the Woman decided to come back with the Daughter, both of them might have passed the final test and could have lived together to raise other kids.
I personally loved Mother. She was a nice droid. The woman that escaped the mines shouldn't have gotten inside and everything would've been fine. Mother acted as a mother should, protecting the Daughter and in this case, lying to protect her. Yes, she did try to kill the woman but I still like her.
Lol you didn’t watch this movie or the ending of this video it’s quite obvious
@@smitch250 either rewatch the recap or watch the movie. The mines never existed, the woman is a child of mother and this was planned out for Daughter to become capable of raising humanity on her own.
@@blazingfire365 I think you meant to say that to "Sag Turner." Also, the woman was needed to teach the daughter to help others.

She killed the 2nd kid
You gotta feel bad for mother tho imagine you raised your daughter for all those years just for her to turn your back on you and run away. That would tear you up inside as a mother
Im pretty sure that robot killed another one of her children because they weren't up to standards
Her leaving the facility was all in mothers plans to show her what the outside is like and that daughter shouldve listened to mother in the first place. Atleast thats what I beleive
@@MarbleYarment That's what you believe because you are under the influence of the film. I doubt you'd kill your own children until you made the perfect one. People say all kinds of things (rolling my eyes). I don't think that was the purpose of the movie though. For many years people have been obsessed with robots eventually taking over the earth to rule us. The movie is just playing on old ideas and symbols/ myths that appeared in other movies and books before. There is no actual higher idea behind it. It's just fiction for entertainment.
@@ciobalina7445 obviously a PERSON wouldn't kill their children but we are talking about a robot with no feelings whatsoever here
@@chariot87k97 Robots cannot think, that’s why they have no feelings. Feelings come from the brain. The robot was programmed that way by a human. It acts too much like a human and how we imagine a “noble” psychopat would. A robot would never try to change the course of nature as it knows it’s futile. This is Nazi behavior and thinking (the “superior race”); there is no actual logic behind it; it’s all feelings. Thinking something is good or bad comes from our feelings towards it. Logically, there is no good or bad, so a true logical robot wouldn’t care what the outcome of the human race was as it would spend its time analyzing things that are instead of trying to modify stuff because of its feelings towards it. Thinking something is unethical stems from a feeling of disgust towards something. A robot wouldn’t concern itself with what humans do or don’t do.
Idea for a Sequel: We Are In-laws - Brilliant film though. I’d like to see a prequel of how Mother came to her original decision to wipe out humanity and start over. You could also do a good sequel with Mother returning 10-20 years later to check on Daughters progress, and decide whether to let the colony continue or start over.
Maybe a few generations down, so that they could have more people explore the outside world with some of mother’s guidance. Maybe factions of humans survived, or maybe a plot twist where mother is disappointed in this batch of humans and led them astray from the facility so she could start over. But no mutants tho, can’t go too fallout 🤣
Also I realized you made the start over idea already 🥴 screenwriters you have a demand here!!

I have been stuck in a MAJOR “rabbit hole” loop on this channel. The videos are SO FREAKING GOOD! It’s kinda like watching a movie in the TV Show time span! This is the 22nd video/movie I have seen so far!
Wait so the test was if the girl would grow to be independent of mother by creating a fake scenario about a fake "Survivor" who was in fact one of the earlier humans hat were created!?
Here's my take:
Woman was an ealier "daughter" who had failed her tests and was released to the outside world and covertly kept alive by Mother to be used at a later time to test the current daughter. The woman does not know this.
The point of the woman being left to grow up outside and later used to interact with Daughter had a four-fold purpose. First it was to test Daughter's compassion and selflessness and emotional loyalty to humankind. Second was to test Daughter's internal moral compass and resilience. Third was to show Daughter that the outside world can not be trusted. Fourth was to test Daughter's capacity for violence and aggression when pushed to the point of desperation.
Daughter passed the first by wanting to help the woman and then returning to save her brother. She passed the second test by being willing to leave all that she ever had and knew to risk entering the scary unknown to aid and be with her humankind. Daughter proved that she prioritised doing what she thought was right, and didn't allow herself to be cowered by fear, self-interest or self-preservation. She was not controlled by blind emotional loyalty and was willing to abandon Mother when she believed Mother was the enemy to humanity. Third test was giving Daughter an opportunity to experience the pitfalls of outside world to push her into becoming wiser and less naive. It also helped validate Mother's purpose and her belief that the faculty's mission is the only way to kick-start a better humanity. The outside world was beyond redemption.
After leaving the faculty, Daughter was able to quickly put two and two together to realise that Woman had manipulated Daughter into trusting her by giving her false hope and lies. The woman used the lure of there being other people to persuade Daughter to join her escape so that Woman could have companionship. Back at the faculty, Woman had accused Daughter of being just a human "pet" to Mother, but now she was herself hypocritically trying to make Daughter her very own human pet. Woman's deception was born from her own selfish desire rather than true concern for Daughter. That's why Daughter leaves behind an origami of Woman's pet dog before leaving Woman. It's to let Woman know that she is aware of Woman's true motive.
Also, if Woman's claim about the people in the mines story was the truth, then the woman abandoned her own kind to seek a better existence for herself and showed no concern for those left behind by dismissively guessing they're probably all dead. The fact that woman lived out in the open and had enough to even sustain a pet dog, suggests that if those people had existed, Woman had not been willing to share her new-found resources and left them to compete for limited resources in the mines.
Daughter learnt first-hand what human deceit, selfishness and aggression was and how the outside world can be just as manipulative and untrustworthy. Daughter realised that she had to rely on herself and not to put all of her trust or dependence into Mother or the outside world. Her decisions have to be made using her own intelligence and reasoning, or else she will be an easy victim unto deception and manipulation.
Daughter had to not only pass all of her tests at a theory level (by simply answering questions) but she also had to pass them in practice. When daughter realised there was no way to escape Mother, she pleaded her case for a chance to prove herself, putting forth the reasoning that she earned it by passing her exams. Daughter proved that she understood that things were earned through dedicated hard work and not by simply taking through violence or deception. And that conflicts can be resolved through rational negotiation. Daughter also proved her dedication to humanity via her love for her brother by being unwilling to leave him behind even though Mother offered her safe passage out of the faculty if she did so. Daughter also showed determination and confidence in her ability when she said she would not need Mother to help her. She has now passed her fourth practical test and Mother handed over the job to daughter and destroyed the facility drone of herself.
Mother then appeared to the woman to tell her that she was also a child from Mother, and despite what Woman arrogantly thought, her survival all these years in the outside world was overseen by Mother. She was the "pet" she accused Daughter of being. Woman has now completed her purpose (which was to be a first-hand experience of failed humanity for Daughter). It's implied that the woman is killed by Mother off screen.

Too bad, no matter how much you try to fix humanity, they'll always find a way to fuck it up. In the end, all that mother was trying to accomplish would be for naught.
It made no sense.
You are trying to teach better habits, thoughts etc.
She said humans killed, wars, destroyed stuff.. And apparently a few "test" changed that?
The robot thinks humans are some hive mind like itself and she needed to clean the imperfections. We see this when she killed the failed kids in the fire or when she killed the woman at the end. The problem with this mindset is humans are not an AI hive mind... They are individuals.
Just having one good egg doesn't mean others could turn bad, worse or better.
She leaves that girl to raise the next generation of humans but what's to say what will happen in 20-400+ years? Humans are not a hive.. You can have great cultures, teachings, parents etc but eventually stuff will get out of control.. Greed, lust, anger, love, etc. I think the AI is either going to have to enslave humans (which will result in war) or be the ones controlling law and order... probably without knowledge of them doing it. An AI that controlled law and order could not be bought and has no greed, lust, hate.. Just simple ones and zeros with the goal of following clearly defined law and order.
It reminds me of the movie "The day the earth stood still"
Humans and aliens could not stop wars, aggression, etc themselves but a giant robot threat could.

This looks like such a good movie. It is kind of crazy if you think that if you program a directive towards an AI; the most logical path to accomplish that directive might be horrific (i.e. kill all the humans start over and control what you want). I doubt we would be that smart to create that kind of AI and not develop a strong foundation though; still interesting to think about.
When human was not human anymore. A robot notice how human became selfish, greedy, and destroying earth and each other. So the robot create a human that can take care each other, love. To bring human to humanity again. What a good movie, in a real life it happen..
