Thanks for discussing suicide - that and other mental health problems need to be talked about. Especially by men. Especially by the "man's man" kind of guys. Lets have that conversation. Suicide has touched my life - someone I knew - an amazing guy with everything going for him - or so I thought. Anyway thanks for bringing this up.

For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.

I can totally understand Tim's feelings. I lost my brother right after he graduated high school and I was there at the time. Having that happen just made the darkness more real for me. I was stressed to the point of having shingles one in jr. high and once in highschool. The things that helped me were 1. Set a one year goal. I have a home gym and I started dong 5k's. Just for me. 2. Suplement, at least 5-htp. 3. Yoga or pilates once a week 3. Fail in something bigger than me 4. No whiskey, drugs, crutch mon-fri. Reply to my comment if you have questions.

The scariest part about suicide is the fact that you truly think it would be less painful than being alive. On top of that, the people who tell everyone may actually be depressed but are unlikely to kill themselves, they are searching for help (which is a good thing for them) but the people who stay in private with their thoughts and plans and do not tell anyone, are more likely to commit the act.

I love the two things they talked about people don’t quite grasp about depression. The first is the distorted thinking. When you’re in that state all your horrible feelings, even though most of the times not true or trivial, seem like concrete reality. Like a giant monolith. Secondly, you don’t want to die you just want to end the pain.

That's a good analysis. One thing to keep in mind it is that talking about your own mental illness is horribly uncomfortable. I'm guessing Tim is a little more confident when talking about other subjects. Even later in the interview when they are talking about other things I'm sure he's still uncomfortable.

    • @lonelyb9661
      @lonelyb9661 7 лет назад +2

Jeffrey Crowe Definitely possible. Jokko is just the opposite extreme that it really sticks out.
I don't know either man enough to say one way or another, but Ferris seems to have a more inward looking mind while Jokko is more of an in your face motivating leader type. Seems like Ferris learned alot by study and reflection. Jokko, on the other hand, learned more by action and trial and error. Two different approaches to lifelong learning, one bookish the other hands on. Maybe I'm reading too much from one podcast.
I never checked out Tim Ferris' show where he tackles new skills in like 30 days or something. I think I will.

Wish jocko would have me on his podcast to talk about this subject and my experiences that could help other suicidal people. More combat veterans are killing themselves at an alarming rate. No one in the VA or mental health field seem to understand what a suicidal person is going through or willing to help

I've been stuck on heroin for the last 7 years. The only things keeping me from killing myself are hope that things can get better and my parents still being alive. I can't imagine putting that pain and grief on my parents but once their gone I'm nervous what I might do if I'm not off heroin by that time. A lot of times I have no will to keep moving forward.

There is always hope and even if your parents are gone, you still have yourself. You owe it to yourself to keep on going and get better.

I have a friend, James Whyte (based in the UK), who was a heroin and crack cocaine addict. In April of 2020 he surrendered his life fully to Jesus Christ.
He chose not to take heroin and for three days was expecting withdrawal symptoms to arise.
He experienced no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever

I have another friend, Chris Stace (also based in the UK), age early 30s, who since a teenager was a cannabis addict. In summer of last year he turned to Christ, was full-immersion water-baptised into Jesus Christ, and is now living cannabis free.

Thanks jocko for taking about suicide. I've tried talking myself out a few times. Got help and now want to live for those that I lost. God is the only one that should have the say if I live or die. Although I do not condemn those that have taken there LIVES. Only God knows why and what they were suffering from to reach that point. Love u brother

I love the flossing argument. It's just like how you can't eat "just one chip." Once you get started, you want more. You want to complete the process. You want to floss your molars. You want to finish the bag. You want to get your life back together.

To be "the prince" , or not to be "the prince"? THAT is the question. Is it better (more noble) to be the rich prince, and suffer through the problems of being wealthy, or to kill ones self? That sounds like "rich guy problems", which is what I think Shakespeare was getting at.

1:26:53 - Tim makes direct eye contact with Jocko across the table. He's thinking: "What I'm gonna say next will probably floor Jocko. He might reach across the table and slap the crazy out of me."
    ... chicken training course.
    (Jocko's eyes go wide)

If you study great men, you’ll notice this pattern: they have usually suffered extreme sufferings. Abandonment, imprisonment, persecution, injury, illness, torture, and/or mental illness. Suffering must be a valuable commodity or this would not be so. I really hope everyone suffering knows not only are they not alone, but if they endure they will discover suffering can be some of the most meaningful improvement you ever run across. You are not a burden at these times, you are a gift to humankind in the making.
