  • Everyone at some point in their lives are asked to raise money for things whether a high school baseball tournament trip or part of a campaign. There are some fundamental elements to successfully raise money for all types of causes. My seven keys to successful fundraising will help all those who want to effectively put a plan in place and meet the fundraising goal. I will use some of my NFL and fundraising experiences as examples of how to successfully fund raise.
Bio- Rueben Mayes leverages his passion for people and philanthropy to deliver the necessary resources in support of the Pullman Regional Hospital Mission. His success as a college two-time consensus All-American, National College Hall of Fame Inductee, NFL Rookie of the Year and multi-year Pro Bowl selectee opens many doors and builds rapport beyond his 20 year fundraising career. He went on to earn an MBA in 2000 and recently the re-designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credentials. As Chief Development Officer, Rueben works closely with Department Medical Directors, physicians, hospital executive staff, foundation boards and committees to grow system-wide philanthropic/investment support for key priorities Rueben has been married for over 26 years to Marie Mayes (both WSU Alumnus) and they have two sons, Logan and Kellen. Volunteer community involvement activities include non profit fundraising consulting. His hobbies are fishing, reading, cooking, and is also an avid, golfer, skier and swimmer.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This was excellent, a great overview. As an experienced fundraiser I'd strongly disagree with his recommendation to publicly recognized a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Unless I misunderstood, Mr. Mays states that a donor's request to be anonymous actually means they want to be acknowledged publicly in some way. There are donors who truly wish to give without public recognition, and not respecting and honoring this could absolutely destroy the trust they have in your organization, and destroy any hopes for future giving.

If this speaker starts a charity to help football players avoid brain-damaging concussions I'm donating. He's the first pro-player I've ever seen that seems to have emerged from the game unscathed and fully intact.

This was incredibly useful, and it fascinates me watching this how, in spite of me coming from a completely different background (I've never played football and am not really that into sports at all, I'm kinda a math and science geek) you seem to really get the exact struggles and challenges I face, I think more than anyone else in any other videos. Even though I haven't ever played football, I get exactly what you mean about the moment when suddenly the ball is in motion and you really have no idea what is going on. A lot of social interactions are like that to me; I can plan ahead, think I know someone well even, and their reactions are often still really unpredictable to me. That's just part of life, people are complex and we don't ever see people's full circumstances so we can't anticipate how they'll react, we just need to roll with what happens.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you talked about the fear of ambiguity and the potential for worry or "overthinking" (coming up for reasons why someone might not want to give) when you really just need to go ahead and do it.
I think this video was most helpful for me because I've been running up against these things and worrying that it somehow means that I am "doing it wrong" or that I am not going to be able to be a successful fundraiser, but hearing it come from you, that you've done this successfully and yet you still struggle with these exact same things yourself, makes me realize that nothing is wrong, it's just part of the process, and I'm going to be able to work through it just fine.
    Thank you so much!

Hey Rueben, So great to see you out there doing well for the betterment of mankind!! i worked the training table for the football team when you were playing (as in feeding you) Drop your head out of the gutter you people. Anyway, as you well know, Mark Rypien (Sp?), John Trout, John Marshall and many others were there as well. Too many for me to remember in my old age! BTW, if you happen to run into Isahiah Strong tell him Lynn (Spencer's Mom) says Hi!

I think if you cant give a lot and you have friends who do, nothing wrong with that some are good at getting others to donate who have money-I may not HAVE a lot of personal money but I have friends who love to give and if your giving from the heart, who cares what anyone else gave, this is the issue with philanthropy most of it is not from the heart its from the pockets to the Executive Directors- none of us take money- it all goes to aged out foster youth.

Sara Dolbeck I think you missed the premise of his use of the word thank,
I believe he meant to show
appreciation or gratitude. Both are shown in many ways, but all are actions, word, or deed *to say thanks* or show appreciation 😊

from my research on fundraising, they say about 4 thank yous should be used...i don't think he meant to flood a donor with 100 thank emails, and letters a month, but a single thank you letter or email should thank the donor 3 or 4 times using different phrasing or wording.

No-longer is there a need to ask for peoples discretionary dollars on a repeat basis. Now you can support organizations based on the essential services you use every day. My company allows Non-Profit organizations to offer their supporters discounts on essential services they use every month and when they pay their bills we are offering a small residual commission every month for the life of the service. Are you wondering what I mean... ask me

Personal, I've been married for x years, ha, ha, examples, may entice someone to donate to your cause, but again, does not add to the information. Shorten the presentation from 16 minutes to 5.
