ZF Manual Gearbox Oil/Fluid Change - 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster E36 - New Slick Gearchange!

- In this video I change the 5-speed gearbox / transmission oil / fluid on my 1998 1999 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster E36 in Arctic Silver.
The gearbox oil in this car is believed to be the original - 25 years old!
I identify the fluid requirements on the yellow sticker on the side of the transmission . It states MTF LT1 which I believe has likely been superseded by MTF LT2. This vehicle does not require ATF / Dexron fluid. I found a suitable product meeting this specification and purchased 2 litres via eBay:
Mannol 8104 MTF-4 Getriebeoel SAE 75W80 API GL4 Synthetic
I drain and refill the transmission fluid with the correct quantity and torque the drain and filler plugs to a suitable setting.
The gearchange is vastly improved, is way more slick and less prone to baulking.

Cant believe how reasonably clear that oil was that you drained! Wouldn’t believe it’s 25 years old! Enjoying the content! 👍🏻
@@VmaxMotors1 Thank you! I was surprised at how clear it looked too but I think it may have been quite degraded after all those years. Gearchange is so slick now!
I've experienced that too with transaxle oil.
Put significantly more in than came out, no apparent leak! Nice job. 👍

Another good video! If you ever get the chance, a video on correctly jacking and axel stand positions on a Z3 would be great. Lots of conflicting stuff out there.

I went with Fuchs lubricants for the transmission and Motul 75w/140 for the diff. Smooth as silk.

Great. My MX5 gear change significantly improved with replacing the 8year old oil in it. mostly apparant in the first few mintues of warm up. It used to be terrible shifting cold. Mazda dealer checks messed up though as its meant to be done every 5 years, I can see why. I think I would change mine every 4 years unless a new kind of special oil is available to me.

@@PB200559 Thank you! Yes, a big improvement. I never really rated the correlation between the oil and the gearchange on manual transmissions but the previously notchinesss has gone.

It's a bit late now but I would be interested to know the weight of the old oil and new oil per litre. maybe the old oil loses volume but gains density.

You read the label, right? It, and work manuals, clearly state NOT to change. Why are you?
@@wmcwings4343 Because lifetime is subjective. 10 years? 100k? After twenty five years any oil will be a spent force. And yes, I can read! I should also add that it has transformed a previously baulky gear change too.
